Location, location, location! I have been longing for a Sephora in the loop and FINALLY I get what I want! Yay me! Not one for shabby mrketing, Sephora lured women in with promises of gift cards this morning. I wasn't willing to wait in line, nor did I wish to experience the manic crush of tourists so I went and killed some time before going in. I didn't escape the manic crush when I finally went back, but I survived. The store is layed out a little different than normal and I was litte disappointed it wasn't larger, but I think that was due in large part to the sheer number of shoppers. Employees were all over willing to help with suggestions or direction. I like the layout of the Sephora brand products here, and am also happy the perfumes were in their own separate little section. Finally a way to get in and out without smelling like a whore dipped in flowers. Plenty of testers and it seemed like half the people in there were simply applying makeup before leaving. The looming line prevented me from buying anything today, but it's a convenient stop for me on the way to school. It's a chain - you know what you're getting. I went over there a couple weeks ago to buy new make up. I've been doing my research on Bare Minerals and have decided to just go ahead and purchase the $60 makeup kit, which by the way, is great. Being the type of woman that's not big on makeup, I decided that the best way to learn how to do it is by asking someone in Sephora to help me out. The first person that helped me out was Nikki (I only remember her name b/c it's the same as mine! lol) and she started putting the bare escentuals on me but it didn't seem like she was really putting anything on. Even my friend, who uses bare escentuals, said that she barely put anything on! Weirdd.. Afterward, I decided to look for some eyeliner and for some reason, thought that they carried Mark (which is part of Avon). When I asked someone ( i don't remember her name) if they carried it, she looked at me like I was stupid and had no idea what I was talking about. I even told her that it's part of Avon and she looked like she didn't know what Avon was. Weirdo. But anyways, I decided that i'd like some help learning how to put eyeshadow on and had to wait like 10 minutes to have someone teach me. This other woman came to help me out. Her make up was flawless and I was so excited. She looked wonderful and I told her that I didn't want anything smokey, that I just wanted a nice, subtle look for work. Let me tell you, not only was she giving me dark, smokey eyes, it looked terrible. I felt my self-esteem meter go WAY down and even wondered if a girl like me should be wearing make up at all b/c i obviously looked WAY better without it! It was terrible! Not only that, but she was completely distracted b/c there was a fashion show going on right outside the store in Block 37 and she barely looked at me! Talk about annoying. On top of that, she left me to go to the fashion show and had someone else finish up my makeup. I was appalled. The only reason why they get an extra star is b/c there was brush missing in my kit when i got home and i was able to exchange it for another one. It seems as if what I have to say coincides with many opinions of this store. I used to go to this Sephora location a lot when I would have my make-up binges in the past. There are not enough associates here. I have to literally walk around until I see someone available. If there is an available associate in the nearby perfume area, I assume she's not allowed to assist in the foundation section seeing as how she flagged someone else to help me. I'm greeted when I walk in but I'm not offered assistance like I was in the past so the customer service is becoming poor. I wanted to try the NARS brand and get product suggestions. I told the associate what I was looking for and that I'm used to a tinted moisturizer but I have it already on my face so I can't try it on. She had to get the tinted moisturizer and compare it to shades of the NARS on our hands to find the "right" one. I got home and seen the one she picked was a shade darker than my complexion. I went back the next day to exchange for the NARS Macao - the lighter shade. They were out of stock. I remember the previous day when we were discussing the brand, she said the Macao is the best seller among the medium dark shades. If this is the most popular/selling, wouldn't it make sense to keep track of your inventory and re-order? I'm Black and my personal preference is to be seen by a Black associate, (which more than one at a time is rarely seen at this location) because in my experience regarding foundation, they know more about our complexions and what suits. Brown-skinned Black women could LOOK the same complexion to you but actually they could be different shades. I guess this is why I was given the inaccurate product. The associates were pleasant about the return, gave me a sample of the preferred product and asked if I wanted to order online for free shipping. Before today I've never really had the full Sephora experience. I'm a full-fledged Ulta fan so going here was a huge change for me. I read some reviews on here about the employees being almost too annoying about getting you help, but when I went there I found that the help was much needed. Although I came in knowing what I wanted to try, I ended up saying yes to a man named Val (I hope I got his name right) helping me find what I was REALLY looking for. I ended up walking out with a completely different product (in a good way), along with the fact I picked up some extra stuff as well. Point is, Sephora, although a bit more expensive, is definitely worth it because the employees are very eager to help you out and test the makeup on you and make you look extra great. Extremely displeased with this location as well as the company as a whole right now. I'm a long term customer and have been very loyal to Sephora, I think I've been to Ulta maybe 3 times. I spend a great deal of money here and received 4 items from here as a gift, I know what I like when it comes to my skincare and I simple went into this location to exchange my items for other ones I know I like. I was RUDLY told I couldn't without the purchasers account MY BOYFRIEND GOT IT he doesn't have an account? So I purchased the stuff I wanted to exchange for anyways ($70 in product) and I'm online where it states you can exchange stuff that was a gift. I'm actually so mad about how the women treated the situation and had 0 interest in helping me when again the products were brand new and I wanted other Sephora products I'm going back to return everything and for now on taking my business to Ulta and Macy's. For as big as this location is, they seem to have a limited assortment of items. The staff is normally not very helpful either if you have questions about a product. It took someone nearly 20 minutes to tell me that they don't sell a particular product at that location but couldn't tell me at which location I could find it. read more

I loved my makeup.... However, I was greatly disappointed with my Makeup Artist's attitude throughout my entire experience with her. My MUA seemed offended when I asked her if she could apply eyelashes to my face... She told me she only had 45 mins to do my makeup and will see what she can do. I'm stuck with her and already traveled downtown to get there..... She tried to make up for the crappy first impression by making small talk. And it works... But then, she seemed uncomfortable when I expressed my dislike with how thick she made my eyebrows.... And let me know she doesn't have a lot of time....And she doesn't want to waste time trying to fix my eyebrows... Not my problem....Communicate when you keep applying layers to my eyebrows. Again, she attempts to make small talk with me.... At this point, I'm uncomfortable with her.... And she already started doing my makeup. I want to keep my promotion... Buy $50 worth of makeup and get your makeup done for free. Towards the end, I realize the session is taking way longer than quoted online, 45mins and way longer than what I've experienced on several occasions at Sephora. I let her know I need to leave soon... I have a job to get to.... I rescheduled my makeup session to a later time, but with just enough time to get to work early.... But her time management was poor.... We finish my makeup and she basically communicates to me that I, the customer can't leave until she gets my email address and emails me the list of makeup she used.... I've already tried logging in... I don't have time to waste...and even if I did, that is not MY PROBLEM that is apart of YOUR JOB. Sephora has a good selection of facial products for men and they have the professionals in house to help you make the right selection. If you're a man and need assistance figuring out what product is best for you, I recommend you ask for Kat. I always want to smell good, so Sephora is my go to place for cologne. They have all the brands, but at a cheaper price than you'd find at Bloomingdales or Nordstrom. This is my second review for a Sephora. You're probably thinking, why oh why is there a need for another one? Well, fellow Yelpers, here's why. It's new. It's exciting. It's in a convenient location - right off the El stop. And D, it feels roomier. At least, I didn't feel as clausterphobic as much when I'm shopping at the other locations. Note: it was too early in the day to tell. There weren't a ton of shoppers. hee-hawing about and poking themselves with Q-tips and "purtying" themselves. I came in to purchase a new eye cream. Due to my recent crazy work schedule and lack of sleep (and hopefully not due to aging), the dark circles are more prominent. I tend to jump around with brands, and this time I was looking to try something new. With the help of one of the employees, I studied the wall of eye creams organized by common problems: puffiness, dark circles, hydration, lines, etc. I finally picked one that seemed realiable and priced right. I'm still deciding on whether I like or not, but I've only been using it for a few days. read more

It's a fun store, you'll feel very girly. What I like best, is the great selection and availability of natural makeup products. I found what I needed in Natural Minerals and Tarte. Great colors and displays. Prices were fair too (like $14 for eyeliner and about $18 for lipstick). After I bought some stuff, I asked whether I could sit at the large counter with mirrors (which was empty) and they said I could, so I had plenty of space to try my new look. I really want to love this store because not only is it close to where I work, but I also manage to get help every time I've been there. The salespeople are friendly and knowledgeable and while they don't have a lot of what I'm usually looking for (nail polish other than OPI for Sephora) I can usually figure out where to go to get it or they can check other locations. My biggest problem with this place is the line. I just left there and the line was wound around the ropes by the registers, snaked back to the entrance inside Block 37 and then wrapped along the glass to along the wall. It was ridiculous. Even if they did carry what I was looking for, I won't wait in a line that long. Thing is, I also realize that this was just after 7pm, people getting off work, maybe they got lost and ended up in Block 37 and were surprised to find a a mini-mall, what have you. But other times, like 2pm, when it's dead and there are maybe 1-2 people in front of me, it seems like the registers are so, so slow. Even the most minor transaction of maybe 1-2 items takes a lot longer than it should. I don't have this particular problem at either of the other Sephoras I frequent and it's probably exacerbated by how small this location is, but wow. I just can't patronize a store that makes it really difficult to pay and leave. I hope they can streamline something, anything, because they're in a great location and they'd be an alternative to the Ulta and Sally nearby. read more

I really like this store. The sales people are really knowledgeable and attentive. They have individualized specialists for specific lines and whether it's makeup or skin care that you're interested in. I always think that with makeup, the more information you have, the better. I find that everyone I have ever interacted with at this store has given me great, knowledgeable advice and great recommendations on products. They are super friendly, but also give you space when you just want to browse. Plus, they are dog friendly, which I love! The customer service here is far better than the Ulta down the street. So if you are need of the newest BB cream, vitamin C serum, or whatever else floats your boat, definitely try out this store. read more

But, just because it's a Sephora and the people working there wear the funny Sephora uniforms and I do not doesn't mean they have a right to be condescending and rude. I am a licensed Esthetician and Makeup Artist. And have been going on 17 years now. So I am not a makeup or skincare moron. However on my days off I often tend to not do much to my face. So I may not have looked like an Instagram sensation or wannabe on my most recent visit. I subscribe to Ipsy, one of those monthly boxes, and in one I got a mascara that was actually awesome and I'm a tough critic. I happened to be running errands on State St. and stopped in to Sephora to ask for the mascara and the employee literally lifted her head to look down upon me as she said snottily, "That's at Walgreen's." And then hair flipped, eye rolled, giggled and walked away. I ended up buying it on Amazon because it is sold out at every Walgreen's I went to, which must mean it's pretty good stuff. And at $20 it's not like I'm buying "drugstore makeup". The employees here need to educate themselves and check their judgments and egos at the door. I mean, they work at Sephora. Gave this Sephora two tries and I will never be coming back. The first time, I was not greeted or even offered help as I was aimlessly wandering around when I asked for help, the woman was annoyed and when I mentioned something about customer service she went behind the cash wrap and talked about me to her coworker. I just left at the point because I wasn't going to spend money there even if I did need something. The second time, I wasn't greeted at all - I literally stood in the middle of the store and it took time for someone to even say hello to me. Then when I was ready to check out I was waiting at the register and no one was there then the woman comes up behind me and is like sorry I need to check the woman I was helping out when I had already been standing there alone? I wanted to just claim my birthday gift and purchase something and get out of there. Super disappointing and just overall bad energy from this store every time. Mind you that both these times were during the week around 12-3pm not a busy weekend. Oh Sephora, how I love thee. The girls/guys here are very nice & helpful. I have never had a bad experience with any of the staff in this Sephora. Ever. Being a VIB Rouge, I come here a lot so this says a lot. If there is a long line, they will hand out samples while you wait. The only thing that is a tiny, tiny annoying is the layout of the store. The service is spotty here. I've been to better Sephoras. Sometimes it's great. Sometimes, like last week, you ask for "a green liquid cream that will correct the redness on my face...I think it's called color correct..." and the young woman (who is annoyed at having to help a customer) will first give you a concealer stick, then will give you a yellow cream. When you reiterate your request for a GREEN CREAM, she will begrudgingly bring you one to try, stopping to help two other people along the way. Then after you get the freakin' green cream, you'll get to stand in line for ten minutes (I timed it) before you're done. Meh. read more

Worst customer service I have ever received at a Sephora! Every employee in there is condescending and very unhelpful. They all were standing around either talking to each other or ignoring customers. When I asked one employee of the had a certain product he looked down at me and very rudely said that the product "did not exist anymore" and he turned around and walked away. This place is great and the staff is very helpful. I'm a guy and only visited about 5% of the store which is Men's fragrances. I would assume that Sephora is even better for females. The girl who helped me didn't pressure me to buy anything and creating samples for me to take home. It's important to try fragrances on to test for body chemistry, longevity, and overall satisfaction. Just spraying it on a card and smelling it for 5 seconds doesn't do a fragrance justice. I had it down to 3 fragrances and returned to buy it here even though Amazon had it for substantially less. If you factor in 3 free samples and excellent customer service, it is well worth it. I tried Macy's before coming here and the pressure to buy a cologne was overwhelming. Also, try getting a free sample at Macy's. The employees at Macy's were fighting over me like sharks (In a bad way). There was definite hostility there among co-workers which made things uncomfortable. read more

So this is the 3rd Sephora in Chicago, which is great-Came here on Sat. to check out the new store and see what brands they have-I felt some of the employees at this location should not be working there-3 or 4 employees looking and laughing at some of the customers...and playing around with the make-up themselves, at times I had no idea who was working there and who wasn't, there was no uniformed appearance on some- PROS for this location: -Natural light from State St. entrance, so you can see if certain colors work on you -Large perfume area -Nice assortment of "travel size" items near checkout (yet is a pain when there is a long line for you have to excuse people to look at the items for the line is formed along this area) -It's clean, products are not tainted with nasty kid fingers CONS for this location: -Cosmetic areas are so close to one another, when you have on a coat and have a bag you will not fit through the isle if another person is standing there looking at items as well -Trashcans were not available throughout the store, I was walking around trying to find a place to dispose of my trash-In other stores there is a rubbish box next to make-up remover/alcohol, but when I was in there I did not see that -A customer should not know more than a SA, I saw from the Sephora site that MUFE had a line of HD liquid blushes-I asked when they would be at this location and they acted like I was out of my mind, as did the Northbridge store... My favorite store is the Water Tower location, Rob is the just the best, so helpful, willing to make samples and gives great advice-I always feel at that location they know what they are talking about-I am sure in time, hopefully so will this new location- read more

Sephora. They're all the same, right? WRONG! I have a little bit of an addiction to Sephora, and with that addiction came VIB Rouge. Free custom makeovers! So, when my (now) husband and I decided to cancel the wedding we had planned and get married at the courthouse, I figured I'd take advantage of this perk. I mean, what better reason is there to get your makeup done? Only problem is that I messed up making the reservation and it never got made. Holy ruin your wedding day problem! Luck was 100% on our side that day because my bestie had made her own appointment and offered up her slot. But then I felt awful because she actually made the appointment. By some miracle, a second makeup artist just so happened to show up early for work and offered to help get us out of our jam! Seriously, the stars aligned that day. Everyone on the staff was amazingly helpful and worked together to keep the crazy lady (me) calm, and make us look slammin! And Cassie, you're a doll and you did a great job. The store was packed but they ooh'd and ahh'd and made us feel like we were the only ones there. I frequently shop at this Sephora as it is near my work, and it's great for after work pick me up treats. The store is always neat with plenty of people on the store. While the service I received in makeup was impeccable, the service in skin care I can't say the same. I asked for a recommendation for normal combination skin. I was recommended only two products from brands I had never heard of. The girl was also a bit rude and short. Saying best sellers are dependent on skin care concerns. I understand that but please could you at least recommend something from popular brands. Eventually I picked one I liked myself without help. I wanted to also compliment Everett in fragrance he is my go to whenever I need a new fragarence he is really nice sweet and knowledgeable. read more

This is the worst Sephora I've ever been to! Their customer service sucks! I'm a Sephora Rouge, which means I shop at Sephora very often. But, I prefer to shop at the Sephora in the Water Tower! I went into the State Street location because I was in a hurry, I asked for some help but no one seemed interested in helping me! I generally like this Sephora a lot. It has a great selection of makeup and perfume. The staff is helpful without being overbearing. Lines are long after work, but if I can get in during the lunch hour, I am in and out. It's good to come here with a list of stuff you need, otherwise you'll walk out with a bunch of new stuff...and you still might (see the glittery ribbon hair band I am wearing right now). I also like that Sephora started carrying smaller rollerball perfumes. These used to be relatively rare, but now they seem to have between 10 and 20 you can choose from. I don't know what it is, but I feel like the customer service representatives at Sephora are poorly trained. They can't answer basic questions about products or brands or even apply products on you. I was trying on a Becca highlighter, and the representative applied the highlighter with a giant powder brush and instead of applying it on the sides of my cheeks, she applied it over my hair. Sephora needs to provide better training for their customer service specialists, they lack the basic makeup knowledge and training. Would not recommend this place ever for a makeover. You are better off watching youtube videos. read more

I like Sephora as a company, but not the employees. When I walk in, they are either talking to each other or just standing there. Professionalism is not there. It's literally common courtesy to at least greet customers/guests. Furthermore, When I am shopping around, I get extremely uncomfortable. I feel as if everyone that's on the floor is looking at me, assuming I am going to take something; so I just walk out of the store with my receipt in hand. Also, most of the help really sucks at color matching/recommendations.I would really like to talk to someone about these conditions or call the BBB because I'd like more positive people in there. It goes without saying that much of Sephora's products are on the expensive side as far as makeup, perfume and the like goes. As long as the price tag doesn't scare you, this store is fantastic. One of the things I love about this store is how attentive the employees are. I love that they take the time to approach you, but without being pushy. Usually within 5-10 minutes of entering the store I am approached to see if I need help and I usually do. I've had them help me out with everything from finding a new makeup primer to a mascara. I love that they really take the time to ask you questions, show new product to you (and try them on you so you can see the results), and do so in a way that is inviting. I never feel pressured to buy anything and often if I am on the fence about a product they make me a sample so I can go home and use it for myself. I especially love that if you make an appointment you can get your makeup done. (I made an appointment about a week in advance.) A $50 purchase is required but this is much less than getting your makeup done at a spa and salon and you walk away with the products you bought vs. just the service. I had my makeup done for a date and it was a wonderful experience. The makeup artist spent over an hour doing my makeup and the results were fantastic. She really listened to what I said I wanted and knowing that I didn't know much about makeup, offered me tips the entire time. I'm already planning on going back so I can get a lesson on doing a smokey eye since I am makeup incompetent. I ended up buying a few of the products she used to make my $50 purchase (well, it was easily more) but again, never felt pressured or pushed into anything. I also appreciated that she really focused on me. There were a couple of times where she had to answer questions for customers (as she was the only employee who spoke Spanish) but 99% of the time I felt that I was getting all of her time and attention.
