As a red-blooded American carnivore I was disappointed to learn our favorite taqueria was being replaced by a vegan Mexican restaurant. However, our oldest daughter's boyfriend is vegan, so we figured what the heck, let's scout it out for a possible future family dinner. It turns out it's actually pretty great. We started with their guacamole, their 'trio of salsas', and their 'beef' taquitos. All three portions were quite substantial. The guac was accompanied by some tofu(?)-based chicharrones, which were nice and crunchy, as well as chips. The salsas were chunky, with a nice mild jalapeño and avocado based option, a mid-range red salsa, and a very nice habanero salsa. All were delicious but the habanero was our favorite, with great heat that didn't overwhelm the flavor. The taquitos had a couple pureed salsas, one mild, one habanero. We were full after our apps but having already ordered tacos, we pressed on with that course. My 'chorizo' tacos were terrific - I was tempted to put some salsa on them but they were already so loaded I just ate them as they were and am glad I did - very nicely balanced. My wife ordered the mushroom tacos, which also had good flavor and a nice meaty consistency. We were already stuffed after the appetizers but are glad we at least sampled the tacos as they were a treat as well. Our accompanying cocktails were good too. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm going to voluntarily return to a vegan restaurant! Sentir is now in our rotation and I really look forward to a return in the near future. read more

My wife and I are fans of Chef Guy and have been to almost all his restaurants. Sentir is an amazing addition. The vibe is great, allowing a chill and intimate experience. What a fab find! Though it was between lunch & dinner, we got a reservation & sat outside. As it was a day, we ordered two horchatas -- so delicious! For appetizers, we had escabeche (good!) & tuna ceviche (it was just okay) -- For our meals, my husband had the carne asada which he said was very filling and felt very meat like. I'm going to start by saying I'm not a vegan, like at all, but my partner has a dairy allergy so when we go out to eat it's sometimes to a vegan spot. I was really excited to try one of Chef Guy Vaknin's spots and the food at Sentir did not disappoint! The place were dark and moody with electricish (??) type music pumping loud but not too loud that you can't hear the people at your table. It was a vibe. There are a few larger table tops towards the front, before heading down a narrow hall to their dining room that runs parallel to a long bar. While I loved the vibe of Sentir, I found the seating to be super tight. It's the type where they have a built in bench with tables pushed up against it, so you have to do this sideways shimmy to get into the bench side. I get that this is NYC and everything is small and you wanna maximize space so like, I get it - just a heads up for folks who may be worried about that sort of thing. We ordered the arepitas, grilled chicken enchiladas, steamed rice, plus two desserts - the lime carlota and the tres leches. The Arepitas were our favorites, the maize was crispy and the "steak" was so flavorful, adding the aji sauce just took it to another level! Another winner for City Roots Hospitality and Chef Guy V! I've now officially been to every single restaurant in their collection, and Sentir is easily in the top 3 (along with Anixi and Beyond Sushi). Surprisingly, I enjoyed the charred papas the most as they were a great side and not super greasy like papas tend to be. The three cheese empanadas tasted like samosas to me, especially with the glaze that covered them (which is a good thing). The best thing though was the chocolate chili tart. My husband and I ate here last Saturday for our anniversary. I've been looking for a great vegan Mexican restaurant since I moved to NY 3 years ago and I finally found it! First we were greeted with a complimentary sample of their frozen margarita. It was so delicious and refreshing we both ordered one. There were so many great menu options it was hard to choose but I ordered the birria tacos and my husband had the chicken enchiladas. They were both absolutely delicious. The consommé that comes with the tacos was so flavorful ! The service was great and our waitress was very friendly . Tasty triangles of quesadilla with avocado and caviar. My favorite dish of the night. Had dinner here with a friend last night and it was not only delicious but the vibe was so much fun! We started with the coconut ceviche which had great taste with a slight kick. Next, was the Guacamole with tofu skin chicharrón. So good! I could not wrap my head around how good the chicharrón was. Great crunch and flavor. Next, we had the Chipotle Mushroom Tacos. Not your average taco. So much texture from the crispy mushroom but great flavor from the chipotle lime sauce. Next, we had the Salmon Crudo which had to be our favorite. The passion fruit sauce was mouthwatering. Definitely a must try. Next, we had the Albóndigas aka Meatballs. Really good but the star of this dish has to be the quail egg. From the taste and flavor to the runny "yolk", it is mind blowing what these chefs have created. For entree, we got the Carne Asada. I have had the Chunk Food brand before but I love the flavors used at Sentir. The tomatillo sauce was a perfect match. Lastly, we had the Chocolate Chili Tart, a fitting dessert to end the meal on a sweet note. It was definitely an eye catching dish but the taste also backed it up. Not much of a chili flavor but I was ok with that since I am a huge chocolate lover anyways! All the drinks were good too but I would say my favorites were the Lilia Star and the Guava Mezcal Mule which came in a cute mug and had a nice Smokey flavor. Sentir was exactly what the name means. WOW! We had an exceptional experience at Siete this weekend. We had booked bar seating but they were kind enough to accommodate us at one of the communal tables, which worked fine for us. Vibes: Great playlist with music at the perfect volume. It is a dimly lit space with regular and communal dining tables, which is where we were seated. Food: Worthy of tears of joy. We started with the vegan tuna ceviche, and as someone allergic to seafood, my brain had difficulty comprehending how I could order this and not have a reaction. It was pretty good. But the birria tacos were the star of the show. They were positively LOADED with rich flavor. So many spices! It's as if you took everything wonderful about a Oaxacan spice mix and draped it all over the (vegan) meat. The adobo consommé on the side was a fantastic addition that paired perfectly with the tacos. I was truly blown away by this dish, in the best way possible. We shared an excellent tres leches cake, and I was so impressed that it didn't contain any dairy! I sometimes go through the laborious process of making traditional tres leches at home, and I have deep respect for Siete's ability to do a vegan take on dishes and do them perhaps even better than the original version. Service was flawless. Our server was exactly as present as needed, had helpful suggestions on the menu--not a drop to complain about here. Siete's website describes their dishes as a symphony of flavors, and I would gladly return to listen anytime. The only my bad thing about the visit was...I don't live in NYC to be able to visit more regularly! I really enjoyed the tacos here: adobo oyster mushroom, pulled pibil, and spicy chorizo. The chorizo was definitely my favorite - hearty because of the black bean puree, and a little bit of fruitiness from the habanero salsa. The pibil taco was also very cool, with a unique chewy texture and distinctive flavor from the salsa. The oyster mushroom was good too, and I enjoyed the creamy avocado mousse. This restaurant deserves its place among the top 10 of several NYC restaurant lists: Top Ten Vegan, Top Ten Mexican, Top Ten Chelsea.... (It's now on all of our personal lists.) Exceptional food and attentive, personable service made this an excellent experience for everyone (vegan and non-vegan) at our table. The recipes are fresh, flavorful and subtly inventive. Something as simple as a light grilling on the tomatoes before they are chopped for the Salsa de Tomate, adds a smoky undertone to what could be just another pico de gallo. The Coconut Ceviche is a bright combo of cool sweetness and warm spice. Even the fresh corn comes through brightly in the house-made chips. The mole sauces on the Hen of the Woods entrée was the right mix of complex, rich flavor, and an elegance befitting the delicate mushrooms. But for me, a carnivore married to a vegan, the grilled Chunk Foods steak in the Carne Asada taco was a revelation. The vegan meat has the juiciness, texture, and flavor of quality beef. I found myself extracting the meat from the tacos to look at it and taste it on its own, quite astounded. The tacos' other fresh ingredients and the chili broth make this one of the tastiest asadas I've ever had. Accompaniments, from the crema with the meal to the dipping sauces for the delightful donut-shaped Cinnamon Churros are all vegan -- but I didn't think about it. I didn't miss meat or dairy anywhere in the meal. Miguel, our server, and the rest of the capable staff, were attentive, smart, and very hospitable. And the space, decorated with beautifully painted masks, was comfortable and inviting. We will be back, and we encourage you to try Sentir if you haven't already. read more

Chef Guy's restaurants never dissapoint-Siete is the newest on his roster and I'm hoping that the list continues to grow. The service and presentation is top-notch just like every other City Roots restaurant, and the menu has a lot of exciting options. For cocktails, all of the drinks are tequilla-based, and for someone who is traumatized by tequilla, I wasn't the biggest fan. However, they can replace the tequilla with any other alcohol: I had the Lila Star with Vodka, which was fabulous. I also tried the La Siete with the bartender's suggestion of tequila in light of my conflict with the alcohol-it was actually pretty decent! We tried a variety of items, some worth ordering and some worth skipping: -Must orders: Champinones Fritos (probably my favorite dish of the evening-think buffalo fried mushrooms? obsessed); chicken quesadilla (seems basic but trust me-so much flavor here); Elote (no explanation needed); Birria tacos -Skip: Albondigas and plaintains side dish-neither were bad, but just nothing special. My only complaint other than the skip items is that we requested the food to come out all at once but they brought out the items in phases and there were long gaps in between-I prefer to eat everything at once so I usually ask up front. I had the Carne asado for the first time. I was blown away by the texture, taste, and presentation. My husband had the chicken Enchiladas, which were dazzling to look at. He gave them a thumbs-up. The deserts were Ok. The Tres Leches was not dairy Tres Leches; adjust your expectations. I can't remember what my husband had, but I tasted it and recall feeling jealous (if it's on the menu, he would have had tiramisu). The pricing is high. Great to have another vegan restaurant here, and less casual than some other vegan Mexican spots, so for a nice night out. The vibe is upscale / trendy Mexican - pretty much unchanged from Tacos Guey that was here before. Drinks were all pretty good - well made, presented nicely. Food was mixed for me. Beet carpaccio was bright and fresh.. and nice to have something without plant protein. I liked the chicken quesadilla as well, which had a crispy bite and good flavor. Salsas were great - good mix from mild to super spicy! Coconut ceviche was also flavorful. Empanadas were ok as well, but would choose the quesadillas over them. I didn't care for the elote - seemed like the corn wasn't fresh and ate soggy. I also didn't enjoy the birria-style tacos which felt too greasy and one-note. The sauce on the chicken mole was really delicious, but I wish it was a more composed dish with more than just the chicken and sauce. The albondigas was the most unique dish, and I really liked the mix of textures and flavors - fyi, it was spicy! For dessert - the churros felt gimmicky with a big presentation but small portion, lacked flavor and were not cooked through. But the lime carlota was really nice with a balance of tart and sweet and creamy and crisp. Portions could use some work - some were too small, some were too big. I also found this overall to be more expensive than I would have expected - well over $100 per person. I would say give it a try. Our waiter gave great recommendations and was really honest about what dishes people tend to enjoy more, so would definitely ask about each dish that you're thinking about ordering. read more
