Solid takeout for sushi but the extra star goes for the gorgeous high end takeout box that sendo gives you when you order a sushi set! I got the Akita set and it was pretty good sushi but something that you could find at most restaurants. The spicy Hokkaido scallop roll was my favorite for sure followed by the salmon nigiri. I saw they have a nice takeout box option so wanted to get this for lunch to take home! It's hard to find as there is just a tiny sign saying sendo next to the pizza place that leads to a stairwell where you have to go to the first completely unmarked door on the right. I didn't realize that you place your takeout order via their website first and this would've been better for timing. the online order did estimate around 1 hour which was longer than we wanted to wait but i asked them front and they checked with the chef and estimated it would be more like 30 minutes. unforutnately it did end up taking the full hour but they were checking with the chef and us while we waited and even gave green tea for the long wait. Nigiri set - 2 scallop, 2 salmon, 2 ikura, 2 akami, 2 eel, 2 maybe seared toro and 4 fish i'm not 100% sure what fish they are. All the fish is fresh and tasty. the rice would be better if it was softer and seasoned more.overall a great deal for around $50 but I personally would rather get sushi somewhere else as it didn't feel like anything special. Amazing sushi for the price! I came here for lunch and truly enjoyed my time here. The sushi spot can be a bit hard to find, as their door front is a bit unassuming and easy to miss (definitely walked past it 2-3 times before I found it). Moreover, you have to walk up a set of stairs before you can find the restaurant, and I definitely walked up an additional floor than what I needed to. Staff was very friendly and service was quick. The interior of the restaurant is bright and intimate. The counter top is marble and I love how you're served your sushi on a leaf. They have three different omakase sets and four different hand roll sets. I went with the Hokkaido sendo (omakase) set when I went, and absolutely loved it. The $48 set is their largest omakase set and an amazing deal with 10 nigiri, 2 handrolls, and 1 kaisendon. All of the pieces that I got were so fresh, melt-in-your-mouth, and so delicious. I genuinely loved each piece that I got, including the handrolls and kaisendon. I would definitely come back again, or to even order their take out boxes! read more

This place is a lot more traditional in taste and feel than the newish affordable omakase spots like Thirteen water and its related spots. You won't find wagyu uni toro bites here. The sushi bar is small and looks exactly like a sushi bar I visited in Tokyo, down to its hidden office building location. I was bummed there wasn't any uni in the set since it seemed like it would be part of the set from various photos. I got the Hokkaido set. The Shiromi hand roll with shiso leaf was a great start. It came with 9 pieces of nigiri: Ocean trout nigiri (so good), Sea bass, Hamachi, Sea bream, king salmon, Hokkaido scallop, Fluke with shiso leaf, Snow crab with butter and garlic, Fatty tuna, and Botan ebi. I had the displeasure of talking to the owner of this restaurant this evening who called me twice to discuss why my experience was not up to par. I agreed to it as my reviews are quite genuine and I love helping businesses. The owner immediately started getting defensive and started ranting as to why I would leave a 3 star review. He called me mentally ill for even making my experience public on a platform that is made to share my opinion. He started yelling at me, and did not hear me out. Very cozy space, seating only ten of us. I was lucky to get a spot right when they opened, because a party of five didn't all make it on time. The staff tried to explain to them the first come first serve policy, but the guests were really snooty and snarky in their departing remarks. There are about 10 seats total, all bar seating, so the atmosphere is a bit rushed since they're trying to flip seats quickly. Walk-ins only- we waited about an hour to be seated on a Friday night. Servers are attentive, sushi chefs are knowledgeable and friendly. I would recommend the Hokkaido omakase set, which is the only option that comes with fatty tuna. There is also an a la carte option to add on any of your favorites at the end. Feels like such a hidden gem and a great value for your money. I went for lunch on a Wednesday at opening, and I was the only customer the whole time. It was a bit awkward at first, but I embraced it. The sushi tasted fresh and was so delicious. I felt like I was in a little oasis in the middle of the crowded, hot summer. As a handroll lover, this has been on my list for a minute. I was confused trying to find it on the second floor but someone was ahead of me and validated going in. It's very cozy inside - I think 12 seats total. I was there on the early side of a Friday night and had no problem getting a seat. This is another one that try to find a slightly different angle to succeed in this format. I met the one of the owners, Guy, who was the host of the evening on my first visit. He was friendly and knowledgeable about Japanese cuisine. We had some good conversations on the topic of the evolution of sushi in NYC. As for the meal, I had Chef Yoko, who I am familiar with from her days at Cagen. She prepared our sushi piece by piece, at a quick pace, but not overwhelming. What I noticed right away is the quality of the rice. I brought that to the attention of Guy and he was very glad I noticed, as well as proud to describe how important that was to the owners. He stated that they wanted to use a better product compared to other low end sushi joints and hoped customers would recognize the difference. The fish quality was decent for the price. Nothing amazing, but that's expected. Best pieces were the Hokkaido Uni, Hotate, and Madai. Sadly, the Otoro did not live up to expectations. However, at their price points, it's hard to complain. We had the Hokkaido Set at $47, and added the Uni Tasting. However, Guy said that the $39 Tokyo Set is their most popular, and then there is an even cheaper $32 Kyoto Set option. You shouldn't be here to compare the food quality against Yoshino, Sushi Noz, or Noda. If you compare with the lower tier quickie options, I do believe it stands above most. Honestly, if the wait wasn't so long (2.5 hours), I think this place is a nice quick option for a decent sushi meal. I had such a wonderful experience with Sendo. Prior to sitting in for the dining experience, I had ordered their takeout option twice. Each piece tasted really good even after some transportation and travel time was spent. I visited Sendo with a few of my friends, and arrived at 5pm (second opening time), got seated immediately and overall had a really good experience. My friends and I loved every piece, we ended up ordering an extra hand roll add on. We chose the Ocean Trout and the Toro which were our favorite pieces from the Hokkaido Set. Personally, I do not think that the target behind each piece was creativity in the flavors, but I think that it works out in their favor in that way. I enjoyed the clean and simple taste and presentation. They do not take reservations- walk in only. From my observation, the restaurant seats up to 12 people. Staff were polite and friendly. The chef noticed that one of my friends is left handed, and proceeded to position the nigiri in a way more convenient for left handed people. What an experience! Thanks to the ONE photo in the yelp reviews of the black door, I was able to spot it. After entering the door, you go up one set of stairs (just one, don't keep going up or you will disturb the residents), and go through the door on the right. The entire place has only bar seating, so it is very limited. Our wait time was around 1.5 hours, but we were texted when our spots were ready. Our chef was so friendly and skilled, and we enjoyed every single bite of our omakase meal. We chose "Hokkaido". I've been wanting to try this place since I saw them blow up on social media, so I came on a Tuesday for dinner w a friend around 6 pm. We were told a 30 min wait, but it ended up being closer to 45/50. Once inside you see why- the restaurant is tiny with a single counter that seats maybe 10 people. It's minimalist and sleek, with the chefs working with precision and urgency. I got the Tokyo set, and my friend got the Hokkaido set which has an extra piece of nigiri. All the fish is delicious- very basic flavors/dressings which allows the quality of the fish to come through. I like that the pieces are served on a leaf- practical and aesthetic. My favorite piece by far was the scallop at the end. My friend really liked the king salmon. The kaisendon bowls at the end are a nice way to end the meal. I'm a sucker for cute things- the tiny bowl and tiny spoon really sold me. Overall it's a good omakase spot, especially for the price, but personally I don't think it's worth the long wait. I think the one thing I can both appreciate and also be annoyed by is the no-reservation waitlist, because although I love that I don't have to reserve anything in advance, it is pretty cumbersome having to wait around all day wondering if the waitlist will ever decrease. After being told a certain amount of time, it obviously increased because there's really no telling how long guests will take. However, don't let this discourage you from going. The wait staff were all very kind, still, and it does make the experience worthwhile. The chefs seem to really love what they do, and I feel like this definitely boosts the experience. There were a couple of pieces of nigiri that we audibly said wow to, but some were just lacking or felt like average sushi. For the price point, however, I can see how the quality equates. Also, even though my group and I do enjoy sake, no one at my table enjoyed the one we ordered that night, and even struggled to finish it despite there being 6 of us. It was the little things that took points off for us, but overall, for the price, I would still recommend it. Quite possibly the best deal in the city, Sendo operates out of a "matchbox", seating just 10 with no reservations. The set menus are incredibly well-priced with the most expensive option just shy of $50. We all opted for the Hokkaido set, which includes 10 nigiri, 2 handrolls, and a small kaisen don. Each nigiri is made to order and served edomai-style--only fish and sushi rice, delicately placed on a banana leaf. There are no plates or soy sauce dishes here, and for good reason; each chef masterfully crafts each piece and hands it to you. To even think about altering the flavor profile with extra wasabi or soy sauce would be an insult to the chef-curated creations. The kitchen has three chefs all of which are dedicated to serving 3/4 patrons at a time as per traditional omakase standards. Honestly, every dish was mind-shatteringly good, but I thought the highlights were the chutoro and sweet shrimp nigiri (the most decadent pieces served last). A la carte options are available like the uni priced at $20, but personally, it's perhaps a luxury best passed on. It was good but nothing outstanding compared to their standard sets. Typically, what inflates the cost of omakase--extravagant garnishes like gold flakes or caviar--is refreshingly absent at Sendo which the chef tells me is how they keep prices low. Instead, the fish takes center stage delivers its lines flawlessly. For just $47, I'll be back. And again after that. And again and again and again. This is a tiny little sushi place specializing in very short sushi sets apparently inspired by some spots in Tokyo. It's hard to call it an omakase but it's somewhat equalevent. I think we were in and out of there in maybe 30/35 minutes including me ordering a couple extra pieces. I didn't notice a drink menu though there were some sake on the wall and they didn't seem to mind me bringing a tea inside from somewhere else. Our group went with the Tokyo for $38 with 8 nigiri, 3 temaki/hand rolls, and one tiny but tasty kaisendon/mixed fish over rice. As the menu doesn't list what the sets come with and I think they change their fish a bit based on what can be imported; this was our mix: Shiromi (unspecified white fish,) seabass, sea bream, akami (tuna,) ocean trout, salmon, hamachi, amberjack, and scallop with the shiromi, ocean trout, and I believe hamachi being the hand rolls. The best of the bunch was the very large presumably Hokkaido scallops cut into smaller pieces which was buttery and sweet with an excellent texture. Outside of this, the hand rolls in general were better. The salmon and ocean trout were also very good with the akami being solid as well as the amberjack. The probably weakest piece compared to other spots was the seabream but they were all of very good quality. The kaisendon was a mix of all of said fish listed in tiny chunks along with a bit of excellent ikura/salmon roe as well as some takuan/picked daikon radish. As my extra pieces, I asked for two more hand rolls; uni which is daily market priced at $15 which was decent but not worth it for the price and the excellent quality toro which was very much worth it at $8. Said toro also came with some takuan which makes sense based on the hand roll option on the front. In terms of ingredients outside of the fish, the pieces came with well vinegared rice outside of the hand rolls of course. The wasabi was a bit heavy in some pieces though it worked for some of the fattier tasting sushi. They also used yuzu kosho on some but not all pieces. The gari/sushi ginger was lighter than most which I didn't mind. Overall, it was pretty traditional outside of the rarely used yuzu kosho which is a good spin for the cheaper places which tend to add more Americanized ingredients to their sushi mix like truffle oil or related. The fish quality was good though I do wish we got more of a variety of fish. There were a few pieces for instance which were salmon or salmon equivalent and the only thing that was premium priced on the menu that we got as part of the Tokyo combo was the scallops which was easily the best piece. For instance, they could have given us toro instead of regular salmon. Perhaps the more expensive options give you a better mix but I am unsure. I still left here pretty hungry after ordering the extra two pieces. It's kind of hard to say if a place is worth it if you paying $60+ not including the rest as you leave pretty hungry but if you're looking for a quick good quality omakase, it's kind of hard to argue going to this spot (just plan on going somewhere nearby after to get full.) 3.6 or so. read more

Instead of taking responsibility for my experience with the shell and everything, he started lecturing me on how and where they source their uni. Raising his voice and gaslighting me. He didn't switch to a calmer voice until I called it out. He said he will refund me and send me a free uni if I take down my review. I took it down, and after following up with him a few times, he sent me the free uni. He also said he processed the refund, which is a total LIE. The refund never came through. I think this place is super overhyped. It's not bad - don't get me wrong but unsure why it's always so packed. We both got the Hokkaido (largest set available) and it was not filling. It was 7 nigiri and 2 handrolls and 1 small rice with all the fish in it. For some reason, the nigiris were small or I'm not sure but it didnt feel filling. I've been to expensive and cheap omakase before and usually I'm pretty okay after but not this time. Also, a bunch of fish had wasabi added onto it which was a bit meh for us since we don't love wasabi. It was also very hot (for a decently cool evening). I felt outside mightve been cooler than in here. I was definitely sweating and I worried about the storage of the fish due to that temp. My rating is more of a 3.5. TLDR: I'm with it. Sendo is meant to be a spot right by Penn/MSG where you can grab an almost fast-casual omakase. Modeled after the fast-pace of Tokyo's standing sushi bars, perfect for a quick lunch, dinner or solo meal. Get the Hokkaido set for maximum value and enjoy the ride. I came across this place after seeing this was supposed to be the Sushi Namba pop-up location. Tried it on a weeknight and it does fill up fast, especially since word's getting out about it. It is meant to be inspired by the standing sushi bars in Tokyo. It's a ten-seat counter and walk-in only. The owner doesn't call it an omakase but for most folks, that's how it'll be viewed. They do sushi sets, I recommend the Hokkaido which for $45 is quite the bargain. It's 9 nigiri sushi, 3 temaki (hand rolls) and a miniature kaisendon or sushi rice bowl. It is meant to be fast-paced, chances are a queue will build up behind of you. If you've ever wondered what it's like to eat at a popular place in Japan - here you go. Talking to the staff and owner, it's clear they do care very much about the product they're putting out. Their shari (sushi rice) is sourced from Hokkaido and has a pleasant bite but not too al-dente. To use the Ichiran "firmness" customization, it's probably around medium. The rice isn't as starchy, so the grains are more individual and the piece will melt as you ate it. It's got a nice vinegary taste but not too strong on sourness. I personally prefer the latter, especially as an Edomae sushi fan boy but I all understand you're appealing to the masses. It's a solid variety of white fish, bluefin tuna, salmons and some shellfish as well. The spotted prawn was superbly bouncy, to have Hokkaido scallop at this price point was a nice surprise too. I did inquire about the Hokkaido uni MP listed on the menu - I was told the day's shipment wasn't to their quality control and they opted not to serve it. I respect that kind of commitment to product. Hand rolls are probably one of the things I most look forward to at omakase, so the fact that you get three is nice. The nori is very crispy, there's some aging in the fish as well. While I get that it's easy to compare them to your chalkboard (budget) omakase spot - I applaud what they're doing. It's filling a void in the NYC sushi market that leans more towards traditional sushi. So there's not 10 butane torches on deck, nor are there any ramekins with caviar and truffles. It's really just shari, neta (topping) and the chef's sauce. Even if you're more about them "sauces" - you might find you like the more simple preparation. I feel a lot of sushi diners evolve out of the sauce and into the more minimalistic style. There was a time where I too loved pasta a la Cheesecake Factory (I still do, TBH) but I've also come to enjoy purist Italian pastas more as I've aged. What I dig about sendo is that what they're doing is different. There are lots of budget omakases all over the city and that's fine. I have not seen a concept like sendo around recently, not since maybe Sushi Daizen in LIC and that was more of a neighborhood traditional sushi restaurant. I think sendo will draw crowds (they already are) and I hope they do well. People will show up either for the uniqueness of the experience, convenience of the location (once you figure out which door it is), the price of the meal or the quality of the sushi. I'll eat any end of the sushi spectrum, low, mid and high. read more

Another new quick, inexpensive Omakase, but this one happens to be extremely quick and inexpensive compared to the several new ones taking over the city lately. It's also one of these "hidden" places, located in a non-descript entrance next to a deli, and up a long flight of stairs into a door marked "Threading & Beauty Spa". Most importantly though, the sushi is excellent, and again, the cheapest I've seen for this quality and quantity. You can order a set for $32, $38 or $45 - we got the "Tokyo" for $38, which includes 8 nigiri, 3 handrolls and 1 kaisendon. The meal is designed to last 20 minutes, modeled after the standing sushi bars in Japan, so you can be in and out of here super quickly. read more

Came back 3 weeks after and got the hokkaido set, and had a really pleasant experience!! Definitely opt for this set if you want something more filling... the rice is still spot on and is what really makes Sendo special (whereas other omakase spots are really a gamble hit or miss for the rice). The fish was also really high quality (toro was amazing this time, very fatty to the point it fell apart). If you are short on time, Sendo is also perfect because we were in and out within 25 minutes. Each subsequent piece of nigiri came right as I finished the previous one. Would highly recommend adding a toro taku hand roll to your set too... one of my favorites. This time, I also had the pleasure of trying two sakes! Both were really well bodied and not too sweet, tasting very fresh and refreshing with a subtle taste of fruit. Would highly recommend trying a glass with your meal. read more

Came in on a Saturday night a little before opening. There was already a line forming at the steps. Since I was only a party of one, I was still able to get in during the first seating. People after me were given 45+ minute waiting times because the place is small. The chefs were running a little behind with prep, so there was a small wait before we were served. However, they were nice and gave us a glass of sake as we waited. The sake was so good, easy, sweet, and refreshing. I got the Hokkaido omakase. The pieces were all so good. The fish was all so fresh and melted in your mouth. The handrolls were my least favorite part. Although the fish was still super fresh, after the first bite of it, the nori didn't stay crispy. Became almost a little bit chewier. They serve at a good pace that doesn't make you feel like they're rushing you but gets you out fast enough that they can serve more guests to keep prices low. The place is a little hidden, so it might be hard to locate. Give yourself a good amount of buffer time to find the place and to line up, so you don't have to wait too long to eat. read more

Instagram : @yeapeats Sendo is a bit of a hidden gem--emphasis on hidden. It's walk-in only, and finding the place is part of the experience (or the challenge). You have to head up to the second floor, and there's no sign outside. The door is also closed, so it's easy to miss unless you know what you're looking for. Once inside, the atmosphere is quiet and minimalist. I noticed a surprising number of solo diners, which made it feel pretty chill and intimate. The fish was fresh and solid. That said, I had a couple of issues that held the experience back. First, the wasabi was overpowering--either the chef used too much or it was just a really strong variety. Second, the rice was drenched in sauce, which caused my nigiri to fall apart. The flavors were good, but the execution felt a bit off. One last heads-up: Be careful when selecting the tip. The lowest automatic option was 25%, which felt steep--especially when they prompted $8 on a $33 meal. Just something to watch for. Overall, it's a decent spot if you're nearby and in the mood for sushi with no frills--but there are a few caveats to be aware of. read more

Everything was so good and affordable. We came half an hour before closing. But the chef took his time and gave us a good omakase experience. We have been to really expensive omakase for sushi in the US and japan. This place is comparable! Fish was fresh. Did my wasabi check under the nigiris (it was there!) and the sapporo was nice and cold. A MUST. Rice was a good texture. And the staff was too kind. The signage for the entrance is small so make sure you keep an eye for it! Bonus points: the bathroom is clean. We are definitely coming back. Thank you! read more

King salmon was very good. I got another one a la carte after eating the Hokkaido menu. Everything else was good but not special. The rice was a little hard for my liking. I prefer my rice chewier. The restaurant was tiny and the wait experience was unpleasant. The restaurant is located on the second floor, up from tiny stairs case. It is very difficult to go in and out of the restaurant. However, once you make it in, the vibes are quite nice. read more
