I went to Sen last night with my family to make a total of four guests. We used to go all the time in the first five or so years they were open and we were excited for our return. Surprisingly (and delightedly) they offered us a separate "tasting menu" which looked great for all for of us! We are two carnivores and two vegans. The tasting menu is $28 a person and offers seven small courses or options. The salad came out first. Three of us ordered the Sen Salad as it comes with a creamy and amazing ginger salad dressing that you can't get unless you make it yourself. Yum-tastic! One of us got a black sea weed and soybean salad, which was also quite tasty an unlike any other sea weed I've ever seen.
We had some pretty tasty food. Vegetable rolls covered in avocado (my favorite!), spicy tuna rolls, vegetarian and regular fish filled miso soup...sesame seared tofu and chicken yakitori.... brown rice... edamame... marinated burdock. Great. We got mostly the most basic food available for the $28 (with the exception of the black sea week [hijiki] which was $1 extra), and there were alot of other options that were more $3 to $4 extra per special order. The whole thing can really run up a tab if you're not careful. Still, we are grateful for the opportunity to try their quite extensive menu for a decent price.
Everything we ordered was spot on. The host at the front was fantastic and I watched him work very hard, picking up the waiter's slack to bus tables, set tables and give us water as they got pretty busy for a Monday night after xmas.
Then things got weird. Our waiter was inattentive at best. He disappeared for long periods of time and was impossible to flag down, let alone find. The host kept our water glasses full. At one point we asked our waiter for more hot tea which he was amenable to, and then disappeared. The host came over a minute later and filled our water glasses. We never did get that hot tea refill. When our meal was done and we had been sitting there quite a while (about 20 minutes), the host came over and cleared our table. Then some time later, our waiter came back and thanked us for coming and asked if he could get us anything. My father, of course, says no and so the waiter leaves and starts printing out our bill. We all saw this and I said, "Wait, don't we get ice cream with our meal?". Yes, we all saw it on the menu. Two of us won't eat it, but that's not the point! Two of us can have double as we paid for it! I walked over to our waiter since we could not get his attention and I asked him about the included desert. He says since we didn't order it with dinner (really?) then he is not to ask about it. Dumbfounded. Who orders desert at dinner time? Weird. So I told him it was included and we wanted it, thank you. We eventually had our ice cream, and it was wonderful. Green tea or vanilla are the options.
I have to say that with a restaurant that charges as much as it does for food, for the policy to be don't ask don't tell that's pretty unprofessional. It was pretty frustrating for me as a veteran of the restaurant business for many many years, but I think it's more important for the masses to know so that they know what to ask for and order (!) when they visit :) So you have been forewarned.
So if you're in the area, the food is great. Bring plenty of cash or make sure your credit card can take the hit. It's a fun treat. Just know that the waitstaff is not very knowledgeable or helpful, so you may have to fend for yourself a bit. Oh, and in other news (just fyi)... all cocktails are $12.50. Yikes. Anyway, have fun. read more
