Friendly suggestion if you're looking for a takeout sushi restaurant. Never EVER EVER try to order from this place. They will keep you on hold for extensive periods of time, then pick up the phone and pretend that they can't hear you, before putting you on hold again. The sushi here is really good and it has a fun vibe. The main downside is the fact that they have a lot of 6 tops which they "reserve" for large parties and refuse to seat. It results in smaller parties either having to wait or sit outside and in either case a half empty restaurant. If they could fix this policy I would definitely move them to 5 stars! read more

First time here and I'm hooked. Cozy, small atmosphere. Probably hard to get in during "tourist season". The torched salmon roll and the spicy jalapeno roll were both delicious, tho I preferred the jalapeno roll, which was half salmon and half tuna, by the time they were gone. I had the Sen Mojito with coconut rum which I thought was quite tasty--the addition of a cucumber spiral was a neat twist (no pun intended). I've been to Sen a few times, and I have to say that they have really perfected the idea of crunchy spicy tuna in their "Garuda Roll." It is quite excellent- with all of tobiko, scallions, crunchy flakes it's a cornucopia of textures to go with the spicy flavors. The other food is good too- I usually go for the salmon teriyaki- but it isn't... excellent. To be honest, I do think that the prices are a little bit out of control for what it is. I've gotten equally as good Japanese food (minus the Garuda Roll). but then again, it's Sag Harbor. That's kind of the norm. The environment of the restaurant is trendy but not overwhelmingly so- you'll get some good people watching in for sure, and it never gets too loud despite it's business. I always enjoy my time here. If you're in the area, I recommend it. read more

Going to Sen is like going home. it really is my favorite sushi place ever. When I visit my family in Sag Harbor, this is the one place that all of us can agree upon hands down. Yes, there is often a wait during the summer, and don't bother on the weekends unless you're not even hungry yet, but there's plenty of window shopping in the area to pass the time. My favorite is the Dakota Rolls and the Sen Salad. The fish is always fresh. In the dozens and dozens of times I've been there, I've never had a bad meal! read more

Ordered for pickup and was told it would be ready in 35-40 mins - 1 hour and 30 mins later it was finally ready. And to make it worse the food was tasteless, sushi had barely any fish and the hot dishes were cold. The pre-made sushi at Citerella is much better. Stay away. read more

Our first time here .. we sat in the back I believe it's there parking lot they turned into a patio with picnic tables , turf and string lights pretty cool looking ..but when the host was ready to sit us down he said welcome FYI it's $60 per person mandatory and you have an hour to eat ..which we thought it was a bit pricey and not enough time to enjoy an expensive sushi meal ..lol but we sat anyways.. 5mins after being seated I started smelling a sewer like smell and as I'm telling my fiancé about it ...we see the waiters and waitresses lighting huge Incense all around the perimeter of the parking lot. At this point I was annoyed..we order and of course the food was rushed the teriyaki salmon I ordered was raw I asked to be taken back and cooked more please ..it didn't come back no lie 20mins later. Sen is a necessary stop in Sag Harbor whether you are a well to do weekender with an estate on the beach or simply a tourist in town to take in the sites. Sen is one of few restaurants in town open daily, throughout the year. Coming to Sen from Hawaii for sushi may seem odd but we were blown away. We started with two Sapporos and two tasters of the Mu sake as per our server, Tracy's recommendation. The sake paired perfectly with the monk fish liver pate sent out as an amuse bouche. For our main course we had the Torched Salmon Roll, the Garuda roll, (which we were told was a house favorite,) and the Jalapeno roll. All the rolls were a visual feast and well balanced. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly, the sake was excellent, the food was even better. The dinner was pricey but after all it is Sushi in the Hamptons and was more than worth it. Big Mahalos to Sen for the great evening. We look forward to coming back soon. read more

Ordered by phone at 5:50 marked on the ticket. Went to pick up food at 6:15 which is what we were told on phone. Paid and they said it would be 15 more minutes and they would text when ready. Kept asking where food was and they said they would check . Did not get food till 7:05. Got home and of course the food was cold. Heated it up and it had very little taste. Staff was not helpful and it is over priced. Live in the village full time but will never go back! Would not even give it one star! read more

If you have to have sushi, Sen is alright. Definitely nothing special and most definitely, overpriced. Last night, six of us went to Sen. This was one of the more disappointing culinary experiences I've had in recent memory. Although the restaurant was empty ( not another diner in view), the "not very friendly" hostess chose to seat our group in the back corner of the restaurant, adjacent to the door to the kitchen. We chose to move to the front part of the restaurant. The service was "okay", and after a while, realizing we were ordering sake by the bottle and a considerable amount of sushi, he became more "friendly". Among the highlights/lowlights were: rainbow roll (perhaps the smallest rainbow roll I have ever seen--for $19/roll); "crunchy spicy tuna"--pathetic small dollops of spicy salmon on what can best be described as fried mushy rice cakes--4 of these got $17--we had 2 orders; etc. Perhaps we are spoiled living in Southern California by so many choices of outstanding sushi bars; but, here's a hint...People don't like feeling like they've been taken advantage of. Among the many items we ordered was salmon sashimi--it was $5-6 per piece. Who are you kidding? While it is understandable to be out of some items (i.e. Uni), other items (i.e. Particular flavors of Mochi) is hard to understand. This is a frozen dessert purchased from a vendor. We should have realized Sag Harbor is probably not a great place for sushi. Maybe when in New York, we have been spoiled by Blue Ribbon Sushi--outstanding. read more

I've been here many times before and it's been very good. This time however, the food was terrible, the staff unfriendly and to tell the truth, the place was dirty. When I arrived I went to wash my hands. There was no soap in the bathroom, which is gross for a normal restaurant, let alone a sushi place. I asked 3 staff members to help and no one did anything for 10 minutes! I then asked the manager, and her solution was to bring wet wipes to my table. At this point I had already ordered and the food had arrived. So I had no time to enjoy the meal or spend with my family. As for the sushi, it was too firm and the rice was crusty. I aired my frustrations to the manager, but she clearly didn't care and didn't have the power to help make my experience better. This place needs a wake up call badly. read more

I've had better service at a drive-thru. To be clear, I was definitely looking forward to trying the original location, as I've eaten at the newer Sen in NYC. I'm not even sure where to begin... for starters, I inquired if they could take a dish and swap out yellowtail for the whitefish listed on the menu. This is not an impossible request... especially since the restaurant wasn't overly busy. Also, the NYC location was much busier and graciously did it for me. When I inquired here, I had to ask twice what was happening with it... and then was told they couldn't do it... and to be clear, this was NOT the NYC location. That's funny... bc there's about 3-4 signs all over the place ENCOURAGING you to try their other location...in NYC. Odd. So anyway, disappointed, but moved on... we ordered shishito peppers... they were out of them (it was a Thursday), Chicken & Steak yakitori (we only received the chicken... never got the steak), wonton tacos, miso soup (never got it), a side salad (never got it), and then a few pieces of sushi and sashimi. We didn't have time to even question the missing items bc the server dropped the check and walked away!!! So that's right, we left starving with half of our meal that we ordered. When we stepped outside and updated the hostess and the manager of the situation, their answer was... and this might have been the most appalling part... that they were REALLY sorry and that if we had alerted them before we paid, that they might have been able to do something. Now, call me crazy... but when you have a table alert you that more than half of their order didn't arrive and that you couldn't accomodate a request bc it was "too busy to slice the yellowtail that thin"... one would think that you would try to figure out SOME solution. Won't be returning. I thought the one in the city was ok (maybe slightly overpriced), but after the experience out East, I'm done. Plenty of other places that can sling sushi and present a trendy atmosphere. read more

I only write reviews when someplace is exceptional or very disappointing. Regrettably, I have to say Sen for lunch toddy was so unpleasant that I feel compelled to comment. At first, the receptionist was pleasant and sat us promptly. Unfortunately, they sat us in a table for two with no umbrella in the garden. As the sun pounded on my neck and back, I requested to move to a table with some shade. The manager (owner?) curtly and rudely told me that due to COVID we could not move tables (really you can't wipe down a table as if we just sat down?) and then sat 2 new guests at the table I requested. We then waited an interminable time to have our order taken by a waitress who seemed harried at best.. Had we not been so hungry we would have left, but decided to stay (mistake). Our food finally came...the chicken and lemongrass dumplings were good..the Sen salad was nothing special. Then I received the chicken teriyaki breast which was pink (undercooked and a small portion for $29 with no sides) and without even an apology the server brought it back to the kitchen. Following the main course, we received our veggie sushi rolls for dessert...not exactly the right order! In sum, expensive, unfriendly and slow service, food inconsistent and not much for the money...go elsewhere. read more

Okay so I would say the service was a 2 but the food was a 3...however the people dominate my review. As soon as we sat and started asking questions of the waiter he was obviously annoyed and told us that everyone called out tonight and to stick to the menu and no accommodations could be met...it was kind of like just be happy with what you get considering we're serving. We ordered a lot of different items; the beef negamaki definitely stood out...so much so that we tried to order it again and when we did they said it was the last serving; I mean cooked beef, really?! The rolls were decent, everything we ordered was just okay/ the sake was great but the attitudes and overall atmosphere was stiff and starchy...have no desire to ever go back!! One of the only sake sommelier's in the region and Jesse Matsuoka is awesome. The man knows his stuff inside and out. He has a passion for food which is great. Luke Ferrara is the chef and prepares the dishes ever so delicately. We started with the wagyu beef and it was ever so tender. Next was the port buns also a favorite. Uni from Maine mind you was sweet and fresh. I highly recommend visiting this place out east. read more

A very bad experience while waiting to take out sushi from Sen this week at around 4pm. It was 97 degrees outside and I and my 87 year old husband and a 77 year old friend ordered more than $100 worth of sushi. We asked if we could sit while we wait and were told that the 5 outside tables - only one of which was occupied - were reserved for 'dining guests." When we asked about waiting inside, in the air conditioning, we were told no, even though only two of the approximately 20-25 tables were occupied. This was inhumane in my opinion. There were few people on Main Street, and few if any people were likley to stop by in dine-in at 4pm. We were told we could sit at the bar inside IF, we ordered something to drink! As though spending $100 on sushi was not enough!! After 15 minutes of waiting i went inside the restaurant because I thought I was going to faint. I was followed like I was some kind of thief! I spoke to the manager, who claimed that this is their policy. I told her we would contact the owner to register our discontent. This is pretty bad business policy and we won't be patronizing Sen again and will not recommend to friends. There are other options a little further down the road! Eye-popping prices: $6 for one piece of shrimp, $5 for one small chicken skewer (ever seen chicken sold by the piece!?) The prices go up exponentially from there. And the hostess is a real charmer, battle scarred and ornery. read more

After I placed the order the waiter told me they were out of regular uni so they only have Japanese uni and asked if that was ok. I said yes only to find out the roll cost me $36!! When I complained they said it was my fault for not asking if there was price differential. regular role was half he price. When I told them that they said not its $26. I said I wanted to see the menu to see if I was wrong. Of course they don't bring the menu and did adjust the price to $18 proving they were wrong again. If they had just apologised for the waiter error and adjusted price it would have been a totally fine experience. But because they told me that I was wrong for not asking and for further lying about the regular roll price and not even once apologising they get a 1. I would find other places to eat. read more

We requested to be seated with our friends when they arrived but they refused us and actually even asked us to leave as they felt we were there dor too long! To be honest I expected better. The sushi wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing for what they charge. For most special rolls to be $19-$23 I wanted to be blown away. I understand being in the Hamptons everything is more but I wouldn't mind paying if it was tastier. Also only 2 stars for lack of creativity. The service here is a joke and the food isn't much better. First of all, the waiter who took our order was extremely rude to one of our friends, who committed the heinous and unforgivable crime of attempting to order chicken teriyaki during lunch. She was quickly informed of the fact that they don't serve that dish at lunch (which it said nowhere on the menu, by the way), and the rest of her questions were just sort of brushed off as if they were ridiculous. She was just talked down to the entire time she was ordering. After we all ordered, we waited...waited...and waited. The server finally brings out my salad, a bowl of rice (which was ordered as a complement to another dish that was not brought out), and one of the three miso soups we ordered. I asked if this miso soup was the vegetarian one, and the waiter pauses and tells me yes. Not exactly believing him, we asked him to double check, and lo and behold - it was a regular, non vegetarian one. So he had no qualms about lying to us about what was being served, especially when one of our guests had a fish allergy. Wonderful. After about fifteen more minutes, two more soups came out (which I'm pretty sure were still not vegetarian, as our guest reported feeling ill from trying hers). So we've been here for about 45 minutes now and are still waiting for the sushi, which was literally 6 slices of fish. Also, our glasses haven't been refilled once and nobody's come to the table asking how everything is, etc etc. At this point we basically give up all hope of having a decent dining experience and just want to get out of here. Finally the sushi arrives (after reminding the waiter, who may have forgotten to bring it to the table). I mean, it's okay. Definitely not $24-for-6-pieces-of-fish good. Somehow our bill ended up being $100 for 3 people and we left completely unsatisfied. One of my dining partners was still so hungry that he went across the street and got a sandwich from the IGA. Seriously embarrassing. I would never recommend this place and would caution others from going as well. If you really want sushi, I mean...maybe try catching it yourself. It would be a lot faster and more fulfilling than eating at Sen. Edited to add: when I told my mom that I went to some terrible Japanese place in Sag Harbor, the first words out of her mouth were "why would you ever go there?!? There are so many better places!" and this was over ten years ago that she'd been there last. Looks like things haven't changed. read more

Stopped in here for their garden on a weekend getaway out East. Food is absolutely amazing (we ordered spicy tuna roll, tuna sushi, and potstickers). The spicy tuna roll was creamy and delicious! The price point is extraordinarily high and the presentation is lacking. Exotic rolls should appear exotic. I've enjoyed sushi for more than 20 years and never have I seen unagi listed at market price. Sushi was small and the rolls are the smallest I've ever seen. Ambiance great, trendy, busy. Seems to be a hot spot. But......last I heard, tipping for takeout wasn't mandatory. Is it a nice thing to do? Sure. But mandatory? I don't think so. My family and I spend a lot of time in Sag Harbor. Shelter Island, other places out on the east end of LI. My sweet 15 year old loves sushi. Especially the sushi from here. She's often makes a special trip while the rest of us paint the town. She grabs the sushi to go and we rendezvous. Such a treat for her. That is until....the owner reprimanded her for not tipping "enough" for the take out. Please note: there was nothing special about her order. It's handed to her in a bag, nothing specially ordered AND she had ALREADY given a small tip because she knows it's the nice thing to do. She was actually bullied into ADDING more money for the tip. I mean really? She's FIFTEEN years old! So......instead of the whole family being miffed, which we are, I figured that today, while walking in Sag Harbor, I'd see if i might at least see if there is a policy in place that made this a complete misunderstanding. I have a rather large family, so felt it best to mend these fences. I asked for the manager. I was then asked if I had an appointment. Strange, I thought, but ok. A little time went by, and a woman came to greet me. I explained the situation, and also said I was confused. Confused because the 'altercation' occurred with a man. I asked her if there was a policy in place for tipping on takeout. She explained to me there wasn't and seemed surprised at the matter. I then explained that I was confused because the altercation, I thought, happened with a man, who I thought was both a manager and part owner. I was told I was mistaken. That the only other manager was a woman named Jessica. I thanked her for her time, felt some fences were mended (she was very apologetic) and went about my time in town. But I was still confused because my daughter had said it was a man.....did I have the wrong place? No.....definitely not. So I googled it. I have come to learn that the manager/owner is Jesse. Thinking now that the staff ran cover for this RUDE man. His picture is indeed the man who bullied my 15 year old. Shame on him. My family nor I will EVER be back. Can't even believe I'm having to write such a review. I prefer to keep mine complimentary, but for others who have young kids, just be aware. This guy is MEAN FURTHER UPDATE:: Well, it seems 5 months later, without knowing my last name, without details, without speaking to me directly after running cover for the owner, they performed a detailed investigation of my situation, and put us in the wrong. Again, my comments about their customer service stand more firm than ever.....totally lacking. You can't make reservation. They only take walk ins. It's extremely busy, but food is delicious. I love the crunchy tuna roll. I think this is the only sushi place in the area that I'm willing to wait for a table. read more
