Tips: - The foodhall is worth the visit. Enter from Oxford Street. - Candy is on the lower ground level. - If you come here around Christmas, the Christmas section is lovely. I was in London in December 2013. I visited a bunch of department stores. Part of me was curious about how they are set up versus how the flagship department stores in Canada were set up. I visited the flagship Selfridges store on Oxford Street. Rest in peace to the flagship Eaton's store in Winnipeg that I frequented often when I worked across from it. I also miss the flagship Hudson's Bay stores in Toronto and Winnipeg. I will toss in the flagship Simpsons store that preceded the Hudson's Bay. I stayed in South Kensington. There was a bus stop steps away from the hotel and around the corner from Gloucester Road station. I took the 74 Putney bus that got me to this store. I could have also taken the underground to Piccadilly Circus, but the walk would have been a bit longer. I wasn't sure how much damage I'd do here! I entered the store from Oxford Street, which gets you on the ground level. I remember seeing sushi on a convenor belt to my left. It was cool. It was Yo! I'm glad that this eatery is still around. You can dine here or do takeout. I entered the foodhall. I was so happy. I saw cupcakes, oysters, caviar, and more. Everything looked fancy and yummy. The ground floor had a beauty section and a pharmacy. This store is large. It's the second-largest department store in London, behind Harrods. I spent most of my time on the lower ground level. It's where the candy, wine, and cookshop sections are. I love candy and confections. I saw everything from macarons and chocolate malt balls, to fancy bourbon and wine. I bought some chocolate bars. They were perfect to hand out to colleagues. They were also Christmas-themed. I got milk and dark chocolate varieties. They were delicious. This floor also had a cinema. I didn't check it out. I was too busy visiting the technology and stationery sections. I was so happy on this floor. I spent the most time here. I did check out the women's clothing, which occupies levels 2 and 3. There was a lot of designer clothing. It didn't suit my casual, cheaper style. I loved coming here just before Christmas. It was festive and fun. The Christmas section was enjoyable to peruse. I have fond memories coming here. I hope to return someday. This store is over a century old and I'm pleased that it continues to endure. (49) read more

This place is beautiful and can be compared to a Saks store. On our visit, it was really packed and crowded since everyone was trying to get their holiday deals. Plus, it is beautiful during the holidays. The store has a total of 4 floors with a huge Jellycat Fish and Chip pop-up on the top floor. If you are here for that, be prepared to wait since it is a 2 1/2 hour wait. There is also a walk-in line if you were unable to create a reservation. Merch here is on the pricier side but if you are looking for something trendy, you can definitely find it here. Where do I start with Selfridges! My favorite place to shop in London. They have everything you need from the food hall to the endless options of designers. My favorite way to shop is to start with a drink at Brasserie of Light and then move through the men's department. I do enjoy the alcohol shop on the lower level since they have a great selection of tequila and stick my favorite tequila. Between the movie theatre, shopping, restaurants, and pop ups there isn't much they don't have! read more

We explored all around and I purchased the cutest charlie chip to commemorate my visit to London. The staff was all friendly and helping the children along as they chose their favorite. Of all the shops we visited in London, Selfridges was one of our favorites. We compared this with Liberty's, and Selfridges is a lot more lighthearted and fun, but with the same quality merchandise. My friend and I had heard of the London Jellycat plush pop up at Selfridges and had to go see it for ourselves. (We did normal shopping too, but the Jellycat popup was out of this world amazing, I have to talk about that). First off the attendees at Selfridges were very nice and accommodating, getting us baskets when they saw how much we were buying and answering any questions we had. They were very cheery and brightened our shopping experience tremendously. When we made it to our booked time for the Jellycat experience, it was so well themed and the "workers" on the Jellycat truck did not break charachter even once. You picked out which Jellycat plushes you want (a salt shaker, a piece of fish, mushy peas, fish and chips, and more). The workers take your plushes you picked out, and act like they are "frying them up" (or whatever other cooking technique if you didn't get the fish or fries). Then they have the purchaser do something fun to the item like blow on it to "cool it down" or act like you're shaking a salt shaker on top of the fries, etc. So amazingly cute and interactive. They then wrapped them in cute blue and white checkered paper, like you'd get your fish and chips wrapped in when buying fish and chips (the food) in real life. There was also a giant Jellycat plush of Timmy Turtle, in the same fish and chips shop apron as the attendants, who is sitting in the front of the "fish and chips" food truck, and you could sit in there with Timmy and snap a cute pic. They also had a ton of other Jellycat plushes outside of the Fish and Chips pop up, if you are looking for any others you need. They have a whole section of Jellycat plushes, so you'll definitely find something you like. I know this review was mostly about the Jellycat pop up, but it just is to show how high of service and care for their customers that Selfridges offers. Whether you're there for a Jellycat, other toys, or adult things like clothing and accessories - Selfridges is a retailer who really focuses on the customer and wants everyone who shops there to have a great experience. read more

The second largest store (after Harrods) in UK, this block-wide shop is well designed and displayed.   Zara Disney at the corner has a queue, mostly of young people. It's an exclusive pop-up launch for the collection of Harry Lambert (1987-; British stylist) that was first introduced at this pop-up before its wider release in Zara stores and online. it's no different from any other department store but this one in London was founded in 1909 by an American, Harry Gordon Selfridge (1858-1947), with £400,000. His early success led him to wealth, as well as respect in retailing. Because of his extravagant spending, although he was foreed to retire in 1939 due to his personal debt to the company, he remained chairman till 1941.  A brief history of the founder is on the top floor, where the customre services is, as well as DTF Din Tai Fung. read more

Totally obsessed with this Mall. Honestly I didn't think London's Malls would be this grand. We only came here for mine reason and one reason only. Which was the JellyCat Fish and Chip Experience. So booking a reservation through their website drove me crazy. The website always crashed and too many technically issues. They will not book you over the phone. So you have to come to the mall and hope that someone else cancelled so you can take their spot or just book a in person reservation for the next day. However, once your there they still have plenty of Jellycats you can chose from even the items on the menu from the Fish and Chip Experience. The selection is wide but limited. The customer service we received was beyond phenomenal. This whole experience did cost a pretty penny but was definitely worth it. The Mall it's self is big and let me just warn you when you first walk in it smells like a perfume factory in the foyer ( instant headache). Besides that's its soo much to see and plenty to buy. read more

Lovely, traditional store and always nice to pop in before Christmas. The food section has some great choices if you're looking to make your own hamper. The layout is a little crammed so I'd recommend going when they open. The meat counter was a bit overpriced but they had some very high quality items. I actually prefer this to Harrods now. I'd you go on a typically busy day or time yes it will be nuts. But Harrods is ALWAYS crazy and so busy you need at least a half hour to check out alone. Here, on normal days if you go in you're likely to find a normal level of busy. There are people to help or check You out or send you in the right direction. The luxury department store model has greatly splintered but this fall of the luxury but not pretentious end of the spectrum. In recent trips I find myself headed here over other options that a tourist may stop at or need to go to (on my most recent trip I tore up my heels after a dinner in shoes that had yet to be broken in) get a pair of backless walking shoes (mules) and found exactly what I needed in under a half hour. A beautiful place to shop with all the luxury items you can imagine. I will say though some things are overpriced but of course if you're wealthy this is essentially their Nordstrom's or Sak's 5th. You're greeted almost immediately upon entering which is nice compared to the American malls. The only thing I purchased were macarons Pierre Marcolini. Shopped at Hermes. I did not come here with any expectations, but I was wonderfully surprised when I was able to get two pairs of shoes I had been looking for that were my size. Two of the toilets would not flush, the trash was pilled up beyond any reasonable expectation and the floors were dirty. Whilst here I would also like to say the level of friendliness and respect in the salt beef sandwich Resturant on the ground floor has deteriorated. The servers acted like they were doing us a favor for being there. Guys you really need to up your game and back to the levels that you are so famous for. Have been coming here every year since the shop was a walk in and step up to an open eating area some 30 years, but this time was a disappointment. read more

You want to visit even if you don't intend to buy a thing. We bought lunch, that's it. Don't miss the ladies shoe department. They claim to have the biggest display of shoes and I believe them. I was bug-eyed at some of the styles. After window shopping and getting over our "awe", had lunch at one of their many restaurants. We shared a large salt beef sandwich. It tasted almost like our American Corned Beef sandwiches. It was very good. After eating we perused the food hall. Don't cruise the food hall on an empty stomach, to tempting. I had always wanted to go to Selfridges and our trip to London in February I made it a point to check them out. First, this store is HUGE and beautiful, inviting and so well organized. It was Valentine's Day and I really wanted to get a pair of Vivienne Westwood earrings. They had so many options to choose from, I ended up getting a pair of pearl earrings with Vivenne Westwoods sigil, so dainty and so pretty. Our customer service rep was so friendly and let me look at so many options before choosing the best pair. She mentioned that she's never been to California but wanted to plan a trip soon, she was so friendly. Everyone in this store was really helpful, showing us where the restrooms were and where the food court was. We ended up getting snacks at the food court too, where the food costs were pretty good. Don't order from here I did online which shipping is 30+ I ordered an earring that I got and it's disfigured and for the Amount I paid that's ridiculous. They don't do exchanges apparently so I'm entirely inconvenienced and if I want the proper condition for the item I purchased I'd have to send the item back and re order. I'll never buy from here again. I feel as if they fucked my order I'm like they did well I'd assume they'd be able to help me exchange this or send me one that's not distorted like the one they did send me. But no. I guess that's what I get for ordering out of country. Customer service was no help. My only option is to return the item and wait for my refund and then the order. Instead of fixing their mistake. This store is amazing and centrally located within the Mayfair/Hyde Park area. I stopped by in search of a particular bag and was surprised to discover the version I wanted was in stock. The only downside (hence 4 stars) was finding a sales clerk to assist me. I had to ask two workers for help only to be directed to luggage for assistance. Staff is not as attentive as other places but still pleased with overall experience. It's not insanely overcrowded and store signage is clear. Worth the visit if you're in London! read more

Three stars only because I have friends that might lynch me if I give this place any less. Truth be told, I'm not the biggest fan of this Selfridges- I prefer Harrods- due to the weird energy, setup of the food hall, quality of the food, and the majority of stuck-up people who work here. I made the mistake of buying a few things from the food section, and let me tell you, I couldn't finish any of it. I get better quality at far lower prices at Tesco. However, if you want to splurge- and I mean really splurge- at one of their restaurants, you may have better luck than I did. The shops themselves are much the same as you would find at Harrods. All the big-name premium brands are here; Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Tory Burch, you name it. They have something for all your splurging needs, from perfumeries, to cosmetic counters, clothing shops galore, and yes, food and drink. I was impressed- and also slightly intimidated- by the Louis Vuitton section that, while tiny, had turned into a full-blown party, complete with professional photographer and non-alcoholic cocktails. As you can imagine, everything here costs more than it's worth, but it's also a great place to come and spend some time if you want to pretend that you have money to burn- which you might, no judgement here. And if you do buy something, imagine the bragging rights! Still not as good as Harrods, though. Not as pretty. read more

So yes, I'm a fan of the Netflix series "Mr. Selfridge" and that series was the reason I had to come to this store. Glad I came, it was wonderful. Albeit nothing like what I saw on tv, except for the edifice. They had EVERTYTHING plus so many brands not found in the USA; which is totally the purpose for shopping abroad. The sales clerks were just fabulous. They actually helped and were knowledgeable about the products. I love the confectionary with the best selection of amazing candy. Yes, they allowed sampling. On this trip to London, we decided we wanted to have a closer look at Selfridges; not just for the shopping, but for the history of the building and the owner, Harry Gordon Selfridge. Mr. Selfridge was an American who revolutionized shopping in Great Britain. Harry Selfridge arrived in London from Chicago in 1906, with grand plans to open an extravagant department store where "everyone was welcome." His store was designed by Daniel Burnham, who also created the Marshall Field's main store in Chicago. The main store on Oxford Street is the second largest store in London after Harrods. In spite of being #2 behind Harrods, Selfridges was opened in 1909 and is the largest shop on Oxford Street with 650,000 feet of retail space. Selfridges was one of the first shops in Britain to introduce window dressing as a way of enticing customers into the store. When we arrived, the sunlight was perfect on the front of the building to properly photograph the distinctive polychrome sculpture above the Oxford Street entrance, which is the work of British sculptor Gilbert Bayes. We were pleased to see the old elevators still in use. We spent about an hour there, walking around and admiring all the beautiful displays. It is truly a "smashing" place to shop! Great place to do your duty free shopping. They have the more luxury brands for one stop shopping. It's in a very busy shopping area. I stopped by the ysl shop and everyone there was nice and helpful. kudos!! No complaints with Prada which was very busy. LV was a different story. I had to flag someone to ask a question. Came here to shop on Boxing Day and there was an insane amount of people. Each floor was jam packed and it was difficult to maneuver around the clothes and people. They really need some sort of population control for each room. The brands they have are all pretty unique. Some of my favorites are Ted Baker, Karen Millen, and Burberry; however, there isn't a wide selection of sizes but there is definitely a large selection of fashion styles. Love the European high styles, think lots of buttons. If you are from overseas, the tax deductible area is where you go if you want to not have to pay the British sales tax. You are given a number after showing them your ID and receipt. The more you buy, the higher the tax deductible is (rumored up to 14% rebate). Then you wait in a crammed room until your number is called - the wait is around 20 minutes on Boxing Day. Then a sales representative will help you with everything. Oh and free water too. Overall, pretty good experience but super crowded. read more

I have not been here for over 25 years, of course it's changed. The ground floor was thronging with people spending huge amounts of money on perfume and handbags. A huge selection...but did they have Vivienne Westwood's boudoir? I had 5 people tell me no, go to Harrods. The food hall has now changed...still good but no specialist beer selection. There is wine and beer and more chocolates than a girl could ever eat on the lower ground floor. I opted for some chocolate soldiers and chocolate egg. It was nice to be shown and escorted to the escalator. All in all so crowded in there that I could not wait to get out, never made it to any other floor. read more

Their online customer service is spectacular and I've never had a problem with them aside from when they sent the wrong bag (I wanted gold hardware and they sent silver) but let me exchange it right away and even gave me some credit! I have used Selfridges several times over the last couple years for gifts for my friend in England and for myself. Shopping with them is pleasurable. Their customer service, by far, is the best. Any issue is dealt with properly. The quality of their products is excellent. Last Christmas, I purchased several gift hampers. All were excellent. Everything showed up when it was supposed to and in good order. Most recently, I had a slight issue with a gift and it was dealt with in a prompt and kind manner.
