    French toast

It's a bit of a hole in the wall, but I honestly love the charm! We used to live in the area and go regularly because breakfast was always so great, and tasted homemade. Portions are large! Last time I had the French toast and bacon- but if you go for lunch, I suggest trying the spicy poutine!

Always searching for a good Sunday breakfast joint. I have to admit that I wasn't too thrilled to go here especially since it didn't look that inviting as we drove up to the place. But don't judge a book by its cover right? Actually, I had a great breakfast. This place was busy but not packed so we got a seat right away (granted we were arriving well after 1 pm). They serve breakfast all day so that's a plus. I ordered the "Canadian back bacon and eggs" breakfast ($6.99) which includes toast (rye, white or brown) and hash browns or 3 buttermilk pancakes. I asked our server if she preferred the hash browns or the pancakes and she was emphatic that hash browns were the way to go. And boy was she right, I loved the hash browns here - probably one of the best I've had. They were loosely shredded potatoes (with some onion for flavour) and had a fantastic crispy exterior but perfectly cooked interior. It was almost like a latke except it wasn't (if that makes sense). They were perfectly seasoned - I'd go back just for the hash browns alone! The scrambled eggs and Canadian bacon were fine - you can't mess that up too much. Portions are good for the average person and prices are decent. Went again and instead of toast/hashbrowns, I added fruit for an extra $2.49 to my breakfast. It was a large portion of super fresh and delicious fruit! Great price to have nearly half my plate full of bite sized pieces of cantaloupe, honeydew, apples and bananas. The pancakes are fluffy and thick - a nice treat but I think 3 on a plate are too much carbs for me. My two issues with the place are: - OJ is from concentrate and not fresh (not that they claimed that) but I prefer fresh juice - toast was dripping with butter - I don't mind pre-buttered toast but there was way too much for my liking so I'll have to remember to tell them to skip that step. The good thing is that they bring you out an old school rack of PB and various jams in those disposable single serving packages (I haven't seen those in a while). Otherwise, food service was prompt and the servers are super efficient and friendly! The decor is nothing special, things look a little cluttered as there are shelves in the dining room that act as extra storage for inventory. Nonetheless, the place feels warm and inviting. And the food is good but it doesn't taste greasy.

Late lunch scene... locals catching up with the news before the long weekend

Kicked off the long weekend with lunch in St. Boniface, hitting up this local gem. Seems like everyone in there knows someone else in there, a warm and friendly place! Simple meals, served fast and with a smile... and extra pickles if you're lucky enough to have the server we did who overheard me battling a colleague for his pickle - she surprised us by bringing a plate of extras over! Had the Greek salad, and it hit the spot.

Very charming and did everything to make our evening very special. He gave good recommendations and was very attentive without being intrusive. I had the prime rib with Yorkshire pudding, garlic mashed potatoes and roasted red peppers (I specifically asked for those) and my dinner was 5 stars. For dessert I had their Key Lime pie which was melt in your mouth scrumptious. If you want a memorable and wonderful dinner, I highly recommend The Gates.

We came for an early dinner on a Wednesday so it was very quiet in the restaurant. I started with scallops which were cooked perfectly and had a very tasty aioli. For our entree's I had the beef tenderloin, my wife had pork tenderloin and my mother in law had a chicken linguini. My beef was cooked perfectly medium rare and was awesomely seasoned. The accompanying vegetables were great and I had an order of asparagus with bernaise. The bernaise was thicker than I expected but still had good flavour. My wife's pork was filled with apples and other things and wrapped in prosciutto. She said it was the best one of the best pork dishes she had. Lastly my mother in law really enjoyed her pasta We would all come back to The Gates for a special occasion in the future.

They have some rooms with firmer tempurpedic mattresses, but they are above and below an event space that had events planned during our stay and the staff said people report they hear the party When a room opened up after parties were done they did not remember to give to us, though they said they would When we returned for 1 night, they DID assign us a room with a better mattress (219), though it was not tempurpedic. It was more firm. We are in an adjoining room (338) and the person next door is showering and blowing their nose nonstop. It's like I'm right in the shower with him. Other guests also complained about hearing entire conversations from the rooms next door. Excellent location as it's a quick walk to The Forks for food and entertainment, plus the river walk area for running, skating, walking or biking.
