This is one of my all-time favourite places to go for breakfast in Winnipeg. Sure, the coffee is terrible, but the food is good. You can get some of the best restaurant-made eggs Benedict in the city here, not to mention they've got a bunch of good Mennonite options, which is oddly rare for a city that has so many Mennonites. Found this on Yelp when looking for a straight forward breakfast. The place it self is nothing great but it's clean enough and they do have some interesting pics. Was wondering what was up with the pics of people on the walls, turns out it was a cool picture project by a local photo journalist who had took 2013 pictures of people in 2013. They have them up on their walls. Service was attentive and food arrived promptly. Good coffee and they had 18% cream, bonus. I had the Day Breaker breakfast without the ham. Most of the food was really good especially the crisp bacon, brown toast, and the hash browns. Make sure you get the fried onions, even ask for extra, they made the potatoes great! My wife's Porogies not so good and I wasn't a fan of the sausage. It's hard to find good breakfast sausages these days. Feeding downtown Winnipeg for over thirty years The Don Restaurant seems as close to an "institution" as any in the city, and with a wide-ranging menu of locally sourced items including several Mennonite specialties the spot at 120 Donald Street serves its purpose as an early-day diner respectably. Open 7:00am until 3:30pm daily, a low building and patio tucked in amidst offices, it is just inside the entry that guests are greeted from a hostess stand, a pre-lunch arrival finding only a few tables full though by noon this would change substantially. Favored by locals as well as travelers, the train station plus several public parking lots nearby, it was after perusal of items including everything from Kjielkje to Teriyaki that the decision was made to invest in The Don's signature, a dish called "Crack & Hash" plus a side of Pierogis and no Dessert as they were inexplicably "all out" of Bread Pudding. Admitting up front that Dumplings are outsourced, each of three pan-seared pockets filled with Potatoes and Cheese hand-made by Country Perogy Shop in Kleefeld, it was wishing that filling would have been a bit more flavorful that attention turned to the Hash, in reality just a pile of buttery Potatoes beneath a crispy slab of finely chopped Pork parts that tastes better when blended with Spuds plus Eggs on the side. read more

First rate breakfast during a short stop on a train to Vancouver. Not too far from the train station and reasonably priced. I ordered breakfast basic breakfast with sausages and a side order of perogies instead of toast (extra cost). All was delicious but the service was first rate. They gave me eggs, sausage & soggy potatoes with no bread (ordered extra on top of that) & no fruit which was supposed to come with the order... so yeah 20.00 for eggs, sausages & soggy scalloped potatoes because those are not has browns. read more

Very nice experience. Excellent service and great food options, including perogy! Maybe that's common for Winnipeg, but my 11 yo was pumped.

My last experience here was bad enough I will not be coming back. I've come in before with reusable coffee mugs either filled with water or coffee from the office before and ordered but today I was turned away and asked to do takeout, on top of that they made my takeout order wrong and when I asked to speak to a manager none was their even though I heard them say " tell them I'm away" in the back.... so ridiculously immature and poor managing. The only safety for this restaurant is their over worked and underpaid servers who barely speak English for racially biased owners who don't care about the food or workers , just the money. 2.75 for 2 pieces of bacon. Like get real. Won't be coming here again, hopefully these servers can find better jobs for themselves one day read more

I went with a few friends to The Don, because their Eggs Benedict menu looked classic, and also offered great options for add ons. The EB were very tasty, the Hollandaise sauce excellent; the servers very friendly. BUT: the service was dreadful. I asked for egg whites only in the EB. The chef came out to tell me they can't do that; I assured her that you can; the whites will absolutely adhere in the boiling water, and off she went to make them. The food took a long time, none of it was hot, there was 10-15 minutes between my friend getting her pancake and the arrival of the syrup, my side dish was wrong, resulting in the whole plate disappearing for about 20 minutes; when it came back, the EB were pretty much cold, and my friends had eaten. We had to ask several times for small things, AND: **no-one checked my friends' vaccination vaccination status**. I arrived first, but as the others arrived, no-one checked theirs. It is not a large restaurant, and with CoVid restrictions there were not a lot of tables in use. So I hope I just caught them on a bad day, or training new servers who weren't on their game yet, but the overall experience was not great. I may give them another chance because I'd like to taste the EB fresh and hot, and their prices are great, but friends have given me alternative suggestions for Eggs Benny, and I will try them first. read more

I am sure glad that I found this place during my conference. Ate here for breakfast twice and both times it was excellent - eggs were cooked perfectly and hot sauce was very good. Don't forget to try their Rolo-flavored hot chocolate. read more
