A classic cheese burger with everything! The VJ special is a handful! When I first picked it up, it felt like a pound of goodness. Loaded with shredded lettuce, thick slices of tomatoes, pickles, mayo, mustard, ketchup, and cheese hot off the grill. The patty was seasoned well, thick, and had the crispy edges from the grill. VJ's was my first stop, since it's the burger joint closest to my house. Needless to say, the words "VJ's Special" stood out as I was waiting in line. Therefore I went with a special, as well as a chocolate milkshake. It ended up being just over $10 total, which isn't too bad considering I did splurge on a milkshake. Despite the relatively long lineup, the food came out pretty quick. There is seating outside the order shack, but I opted to eat inside my friend's car as it was raining. The burger's quite messy, but hey that's what it's supposed to be! It was certainly juicy and the toppings were perfect for this burger. It's quite big as well, certainly enough for a meal if you combine with a drink. Sodium levels were definitely high after eating though, as I had to down quite a bit of water after. The milkshake was great as well, with no complaints at all. Will certainly return here if I'm craving for a burger (and would prefer one that's cheaper than Nuburger). read more

Yea! Yelp finally comes to the Great White North! And another 1st Review and maybe even the first Winnipeg review. This place is a "hole in the wall" among hole in the walls. It's apparently well known in the Prairies and is across the street from the main train station. You basically walk inside to the counter, order your food (burgers, fries, poutine, etc.) and when it's ready eat at one of the picnic tables outside. It's very basic selection and facilities. But sometimes, this sort of casual is just want I want - unpretentious, local, and comfortable. This place would be in Road Food (Jane and Michael Stern) if they had a Canadian edition. Oh yes, the food is quite tasty! Other Winnipeg sites like The Forks, St. Boniface, and the corner of Portage and Main downtown (sometimes said to be the coldest place in Canada in the winter) are all nearby and weather-permitting within an easy and pleasant walk. Will never buy a burger from this falling apart dirty building. VJ's also knows their only value is their parking lot. We have visited Johnny G's for years and always been respectful of VJ's parking lot. Even today in the pouring rain, we brought two of us to go pick up food that way one person could stay in the car that way we weren't parked in their lot. That didn't stop this incredibly rude lady from demanding to know if I was ordering from her and then screaming about how I wasn't allowed to park there (even though we were just dropping off there to stay out of the rain). When I tried saying it's raining and we're just picking up good she screamed louder about how I "need to learn how to read a sign". I said "if we're going to be rude like this you've ensured you will never earn my business. We're not parked here, you could really be nicer", she just continued to sign scream about how "I need to learn how to read a F####### sign" It's surprising that she would rather lose my business, get angry reviews, and ensure I tell everyone about how terrible the treatment of their customers are. I've never heard of Vjs, nor have I ever been to the Johnny g's connected to it, nor have I ever left a review for any place. I made a quick to go order from Johnny g's and it looked like this one big building so I parked in the parking lot, collected my food and went to go home. As I was walking by I started getting SCREAMED at, I'm talking top of the lungs by an older gentleman (looked maybe like the owner) who starts running out of Vjs at me. I have no idea what he's saying, it's dark out, I'm by myself and as I'm walking fast I say excuse me excuse me, and he is berating me, like top of his lungs, for parking there. Literally screaming in my face during covid (he had a mask on but it was still not cool). The manager did come out and try to explain to me but I kept repeating I had never been there and I'm sorry and I didn't know (there was plenty of other parking). They're going on and on about the 200$ ticket I could have got (I was there for less than 3 minutes) I got into my car shaken up, and like seriously feeling so down trodden. I know this sounds like a Karen move but I have literally never written a review before, NOR did I eat their food which I'm sure is delicious by the amount of people around. OK if you're ever in Winnipeg you Gotta stop off here , I guess my mother is a regular here because when I went to Winnipeg to visit her she met me at the train station which VJs it's directly across from We were welcomed by the owner who looks like a character out of the Sopranos. He was extremely friendly and even hugged my mother. Well, this one is a Winnipeg Institution, and for good reason. I started going there as a kid, and that was a long time ago... I've since had burgers all over Canada and the US, and NOTHING is as good as a VJ's special with fries. I don't care if I have to sit outside on the picnic table at 25 below zero, it is worth it. We used to joke that some mind-altering ingredient was in the chili sauce on the special. You'd eat one, and for some reason, it only made you hungrier. But to be serious, this is everything a burger should be, and the fries are plentiful, it was not that often we finished them. So my wife and I decided to take the Train home from Vancouver as part of our Honeymoon. We were scheduled to stop in Winnipeg for some time to walk around and were told by a friend to check out VJ's. So we decided we would try it out since we didn't get a chance to check out their other recommendation while in Vancouver. Now you have to understand that Trains are RARELY on time. CN and CP control the rails and VIA is just a tenant. So Freight gets priority and there is NOTHING VIA can do about it. So when we knew we were going to be a little late coming in, I texted another friend we were planning on saying Hi to briefly and suggested we go there as it was close to the train station. Time slowly crept along as we waited to be allowed to come into the station. By 10 o'clock I was beginning to wonder if we'd get there in time for VJ's to still be open. At 11:23 I called to find out what time they were open to. I got a possible time from Google but wanted to make sure. In winter, sometimes places close a bit early if there's nothing going on. So when the VERY friendly "brother" answered the phone, I was pleased I'd called when they said they were about to close in 7 minutes. Though I wasn't sure if we'd even make it then being as we STILL weren't moving. I told the guy my predicament and he said "Hold on, we've had stranger requests". Now what would have happened if we didn't get off in time and our friend hadn't been there, I'm not sure. But regardless, I quickly called my buddy, asked him what we wanted (we had no idea so when the "brother" said "you want the special" we could only assume that's what we should get) So I called him back and said we'd get there as soon as we could, but we'd like 3 specials. We didn't get off the train until 1:05. Over an hour after they said they'd be closed. He said he'd stay open for at least an hour. So we did get our burgers (my friend showed up and figured he'd just go and get them and we wouldn't get the opportunity to check the place out, but that's ok). So we basically had these burger made at about 11:30pm and didn't start eating them until 1am. Even at room temperature (being in Winnipeg, they didn't stay warm long I'm sure) these were for sure, in the Top 5 burgers I've ever had. Absolutely delicious. We had people even say "Oh, you must have gone to VJ's" when we posted we'd just had a delicious burger in Winnipeg. So by all means, however you do it, make sure you get the special from VJ's. You will NOT be disappointed. And Brother, if you ever read this, THANK YOU. You rocked our delayed asses enough to completely get over the fact we'd waited so long for them. Peace. read more

The food is, well.....Seriously Fantastic!!! I was in Winnipeg for business and staying at the Fort Garry Hotel (nearby). I found this place easily during a quick walk one evening. Just based on the outward appearance (a well aged and worn local drive-in) I had to try it. It helped that a local gave me a "heads up" on what to order while I was in line. I had two of their "special burgers" and an order of fries ($16.80 CAD). WOW!!!! Short Version: Imagine almost everything you could put on a cheeseburger (except bacon) being put on the cheeseburger. Shreaded lettuce, huge tomato slices, full size pickle wedges, hot chili, lots of cheese, juicy coleslaw sauce, and a big 'ol slice of beef. It was a bit of heaven. I know this is a Winnipeg staple but I far prefer Dairi-Wip down the road. I have a huge gluten intolerance and wanted to badly to try their burgers without a bun. The lady working clearly has been there for years, if not probably the owner and was SO rude when I asked for this request. Obviously I didn't get it so I opted for fries and a shake. She didn't hear the shake part and didn't write anything down so all I had were fries. My husband said the rest of the food was sub-par and nothing to write home about.
