Came the week before Christmas around 5pm to pick up some gifts and the little shop was packed! I grew up eating See's candy but never really purchased it as an adult until now. Does this mean I'm getting old? Bought some fun mini hard candies that come in their classic lollipop flavors and also bought some custom selection truffles. They didn't have everything I was looking for mainly due to being sold out during a busy holiday season but I'm happy with my purchase. Each custom box is about $30 per pound but you needn't fill up the whole box. Half pound boxes are available too. Just ask to see the box to check the progress and the workers will show you how it looks and also let you know if more can fit inside if you want it to look fuller. Associate gave me a great tip for selecting the chocolates: if you aren't opening the box to consume right away, steer away from the mint flavors because everything will end up smelling and tasting like mint if you let them sit with other chocolates too long! I've been going there for over 25 years, there's this rude girl in the store that after me asking for four different samples told me that that was the last one. To which I asked why had your policy change? She made it sound like she was doing me a favor by giving me one more sample. Never mind that they charge $3.00 extra to pick your own box. So she ruined it for me, ask her for her name and I did talk to her manager, she told her manager that I was rude to her, which I was not. I may have been mad because of how disrespectful she was. I love this charming shop and am thrilled it's in La Canada. It's a wonderful little throwback to the 50s, and both service and quality of the chocolate are excellent. I absolutely love that they let you sample a piece when you walk in. Father's Day brought me in around lunch time on a Thursday afternoon. It was a tad busy. I had to park on the street, no biggie. I needed up getting a two pound box for my husband for Father's Day and we each got a few pieces of chocolate. I just wanted to name drop a fantastic lady named Breanna who I noticed the second we walked in. The lady she helped before me told her what a great help she was and she was right. Not only did she give my daughter and me a sample, but she let us both get another chocolate to try before committing to buying one, which I thought was really nice. She was very happy and smiley and you can tell she really enjoys her job. Just a true ray of sunshine. Well, during early COVID when Sees was closed I lost 15 lbs (I'm a big girl, can spare 15 and more). Then Sees reopened and the weight came right back on! Obviously this is not a ME problem I love their dark chocolates: the dark nougat and dark butterchew are just delicious and anything with almonds tends to work for me. This isn't European or Parisian chocolate, this is fabulously made in the USA, in California, and it's heavenly! A month ago my love cherry picked a box of my favorites. The box has been up cycled and repurposed to a mending kit as a homage to my grandmother. I kept thinking of all the fond memories these flavorful chocolates evoke. My favorites are the dark chocolates with nuts or caramels. If I had to pick only one, it would be the California Crunch, followed up with a close seconds molasses chips. So with Easter a week passed, I was curious to see if there were any seasonal treats still available and on sale. It was a score! The dark chocolate peanut butter egg is AMAZING! We cut it into 4 manageable pieces to not feel too gluttonous to eat at once. This portion size is about the same as a peanut butter cup. My sister really really wanted See's for Christmas. So I had her tell me exactly what she wanted once she looked at the selections online. She went a little crazy but she deserved what she wanted. (She has been a rock for another family member so she gets what she wants). I took her list and ordered online, creating two custom boxes for her, paid and waited for See's to let me know pickup ready. Couple hours later ( they were in midst of the Christmas rush) i got their email. I pull into the parking lot and see a long line. Ugh. From my car I call their number to pick up. I like how they have their own parking lot solely for their business. Also they have a wide selection of choices. But their customer service is not the greatest. I mean it's not the worst but it just takes forever for them to pay attention to your order. That's why I usually just get a ready to go assortment so I don't have to wait too long. What a great experience during the busy holiday season. I came in with my mom to get gifts for customers. Got all that I thought I needed, and had forgotten the other pound of chocolate I needed. I called up and Beth answered the phone. She recognized me from my particular order. 1 pound of marzipan chocolates. See's Candies will always get 5 stars from me. It's one of my first stops when I get off the plane from the east coast. This branch is a stand-alone shop not in a mall, with a private parking lot. We visited just after Christmas, and the spacious shelves were mostly empty, regrettably. The line was long and the cashiers a bit slower than I've experienced, but perhaps that was just as they recovered from a customer who was buying a two pound box one piece at a time (did I get anything coconut...?). Luckily, my favorite chocolate was available - although they had to bring it in from the back! You can't go wrong with this high quality chocolate - and a free sample whether you buy something (which I did, and always do!) or not. I've had Neuhaus, Godiva, Ghirardelli, Baci Perugia, Lindt, etc., but for the price & flavour profile, See's Chocolate made in the good old US of A is for me, the best there is. My particular favorite is the Chocolate Truffles....mint, dark chocolate, etc. I find that all of them are rich in chocolate flavour as well as having a high cream content that adds silkiness, rich diary creaminess, and chocolate butter that makes the chocolate melt at near body temperature for luxurious sensory overload. I imagine chocolate could be listed as a drug closely similar to the effects of endorphins. The See's store in La Canada/Flintridge is not quite like the classic See's store in Granada Hills which replicates the older "original" decor with pristine white punctuated by accents of black. The overhead lights made of milk white glass in a art deco shape adds a touch of elegance from the 1920's when Les Arts Decoratif et Industriel was all the rage on both sides of the Atlantic. The counters are ensconced in immaculate, clear glass to protect the precious chocolate objets d'art. However, the overall decor at the La Canada store is close enough. The lady sales person whose company number is 018400000003 was the opposite of some nameless cog in the machine that is See's. She is friendly, amiable, good natured, & hospitable. Buying the candies from her was a pleasure, and she made the transaction into a small town/village experience where a little small talk & chit chat makes for a feeling of being welcomed in a way that could never happen in a big box corporate entity such as Walmart. It's because of her that I unhesitatingly choose 5 Yelp stars for the La Canada store. (If you're curious, the photo I uploaded with a lady behind the counter is the gracious Ms. 018400000003.) It's great to see workers who still are loyal to their company and express it by going out of their way to make customers feel at home. So rare to find in the early 21st century when companies like Walmart exploit their employees with low wages forcing them to go on welfare/public support, or hire them with less than 40 hours so Walmart doesn't provide them with health care either. It seems that See's must be doing something right. Normally, I don't visit See's Candies two days in a row, but I polished off my son's Easter egg that we bought yesterday and he was not a happy camper when he got home from school. He must have inherited the chocoholic gene from me. Anyway, to my pleasant surprise all the Easter chocolates were on sale for 25% off today. Trust me when I say going to See's in the afternoon when they have a sale and you are craving something sweet is a huge mistake.
