Friend sent in their broken USB flash drive to get it looked at and quoted for data recovery. They said it would be about $1000 for a full NAND dump when it really should have been as easy as soldering the USB connector back to the board (yes, the break was that clean). Friend asked for the drive back. They offered the recovery for $600 instead, unable to give the drive back throughout the weekend because one specific worker was the only one with access to it. Friend asked for drive again on Monday, and they were so difficult about it that they paid the $600 just to get the data back at all. Don't let this be your first stop and prepare to not be able to get whatever media you send them back if you do send it in. read more

I had a hard drive crash and had some files that were not automatically backed up to the cloud (was not aware when I set up the backup) and I wanted to recover them from the failed drive. I reached out to Secure Data and spoke to Val and explained my situation. These weren't files of high importance so it was going to depend on the cost as to whether I would go through with the recovery. I sent the drive to them and Val got back with me quickly when they received the drive. They quickly tested the drive and they discovered the files were retrievable but it would be a complicated recovery. Plates were in tact but the rest was shot. Val communicated the cost to recover the files. As these were not business files nor important personal files, I was not willing to pay the price (which was reasonable for the recovery were they vital files, just more than I wanted to pay for these files) so I asked that the drive be returned. Val and I had discussed this prior to my sending the drive. He thanked me for my business and sent the drive back. A couple of things before you decide to have a recovery. 1) This service is not cheap. It is very labor intensive in most cases. 2) Know up front that you will have to pay for the return of your drive should you choose not to move forward with recovery. 3) Make sure that you back up your files to the cloud or external media and whatever you do, if you have an auto backup program, verify the file types that are automatically backed up and how to set other files to be backed up. If I ever have files that need recovery, I will use their service. read more

This company is extortionists - I sent in my phone ro recover pictures that were accidentally deleted. I didn't use the phone after the pics were deleted nor had the phone had been damaged. After paying the $49 "to do an analysis, they claimed there was damage of the phone and it would cost $1,281.00 to recover the pictures - outrageous. When I told them I could buy a plane ticket back to where I had visited to get the pictures again and that I didn't want them to proceed, they demanded another $24.95 to send the phone back. We had a hard drive that died and was making clicking noises. We tired all we could to get the data off of it but were unable to. I searched around and found Secure Data Recovery Services and contacted them. They gave me a 'quote range' but could not tell me exactly what it would be until they took a look at the drive. I worked with Chris on my data recovery and want to say that I was glad I chose them to recover data from my daughter's failed hard drive in her MacBook. Chris, thanks so much for being on top of things regarding my lost data. Timing was perfect as we received the recovered data and the bad hard drive on one day, installed the bad hard drive back into the MacBook, brought it into the Apple Store and they were able to install the new hard drive the next day. Yesterday, we transferred all the data from the recovery drive onto the new hard drive Apple installed. Then my son took that data and copied it over to a new SSD drive which he installed into the MacBook. My boss had his RAID 5 array fail and told me I had to find a data recovery company. I chose these guys based off of their certifications and references. My overall experience was very positive as we were faced with what seemed like an impossible situation and they gave us hope in the middle of it. What could have been an absolute catastrophe (2 disks down, and 1 questionable in a RAID 5) turned out to be not as bad as originally thought. The recovery took a little bit and they worked around the clock in order to finish it. My representative, Eric, turned out to be a knowledgeable person and put up with my constant calls with patience which I really appreciated (I was in a very nevous sysadmin and the experience of losing my data was a bit nerve racking). Went to these guys after my external hard drive was acting up, refused to work, and started making loud noises, and didn't want it damaged any further. When I called them, they gave me a price range and an estimate for how long it would take. They told me I could spread payments out if it was expensive, but they'd have to look at it to diagnose it and get a cost. They have collection centers, but these centers just ship it to their lab in Cali, so I don't know why they have the collection centers. I wanted to avoid mailing it since it is fragile, but apparently they don't have issues with it, so whatever. They got back to me quickly with the diagnosis and price. Although the price I paid was higher than I thought it would be, it was well within the price range they quote and they allowed me to make payments over the course of a few months in order to spread out the cost. They were very patient with my payment schedule because I didn't have a lot of income. When I finished payments, they rushed me my data (in like two days) in a brand new hard drive. The amount of data I remember having on the drive was less (by about a quarter), but everything I checked was there, there were even files that worked (video) that didn't work before! The only downside was that they didn't get my original drive back to me. They said that this was because I had a payment plan that was spread way out and took longer than expected to complete the schedule. They usually don't have to store stuff for that long. I mailed in my iPhone after it got run over by a car. They were able to get the data off which is an awesome job on the technician's part but the service afterwards was terrible. They mailed a hard drive back and I did not have permission to open the Camera Roll folder which I was given no explanation for. I emailed multiple times asking how to import this phone backup into iTunes to restore my new phone. They replied saying "It is just going to be hard for me to describe in an email what you would click/how you would do it" and "I don't know how else to describe it other than you want to import the backup into iTunes". Specifically, I said I have my hard drive plugged in, my new phone plugged in, iTunes up, what is next? I have a hard drive with my phone back up and they have no way of telling me how to get data off of it. Highway robbery at it's finest.. Offer a free diagnostic of your hardware (Sweet!) and are happy to take it off your hands and ship it out. When the diagnostic is completed, email says, "We have completed the diagnostic process and are confident in moving forward with the recovery. To proceed with the recovery, please complete the "pre-authorization" work agreement" ...along with cutting us a check for a cool for $3,500+. Umm, what? Don't worry.. They'll offer you a generous INTEREST FREE PAYMENT PLAN before letting you walk away from the agreement (gee, thanks!). After apologetically backing out due to the cost, I'm charged a $30 shipping fee to get my hardware back. Umm, what? I watched their "shipping and handling" practices when I originally dropped it off - a small cardboard box and about 8-inches of bubble wrap. The postal service must have quadrupled their prices since last week! Thanks for the ride, Data Secure. Lesson learned. GFY. read more

Several hours after I filed this review (along with complaints to my credit card bank and the Better Business Bureau), I heard back from a different office of this company, located in Toronto. My new contact there (Jeremy) provided a link to download what turned out to be the missing crucial data. He also provided technical assistance and suggestions when my software at first failed to unzip the compressed files. I was ultimately able to copy the files into the proper locations on my computer, and am satisfied that they have been restored correctly. Jeremy says that the engineering team, given time, will also be able to recover more of the data from the crashed disk--audio files that I would like to have back but are probably not irreplaceable. I'll await the results of these operations, but meanwhile, I believe I've received what I paid for, although not within the time parameters originally given. I'm willing to believe the problems I had were not with the company itself, but with the Ohio office and particularly Brett. I've withdrawn my complaints to my credit card bank and the Better Business Bureau. read more

After and getting an overview of their services and process for a laptop I needed the data recovered from, I sent my mechanical and solid state drives for them to inspect. They informed me there was no data on the mechanical drive and they would need to inspect the ssd. At this point they asked me to send the ssd to them. Per their original instruction I had already sent both together. They had no record of receiving it or having it. They claim to have a video of 'unboxing' my drives that shows the ssd wasn't included, but refuse to share the video. My assumption is the ssd got discarded with the packaging, as it was wrapped in foam but still fairly small. They've offered no remedy, or even apology. I now have no option to try to recover that data with them or anyone else.I can not recommend this company by any means. I strongly warn against sending your drive(s) away to them. Called Secure Data to recover all of my files in my 128GB micro SD card. After speaking with there customer rep, he told me the price ranges but wont give out a price unless the diagnostics is done. After waiting 3 three days for the diagnostics they sent me the report which literally told me nothing other than it needs fixing (duh) and that it will cost me 3500.00 bucks to retrieve my data. Oh you have to be kidding me, this company must be smoking something for them to think for one second that I will be paying that amount. It was a complete waste of my time giving them my SD card. Please save your money and don't go near this company because if you don't use there service they will charge you 28.95 to return your SD card. And don't worry about asking them to pick up your SD because you cant they can "only" ship it to you. Awesome company! read more

However when my drive was returned without any of the recovered data on it, my experience took a turn. I've been waiting an additional 7 days for the return of my material and received the additional task of returning the empty drive that was sent to me. Ultimately my case, an $872 case, has taken a month to reconcile when in fact this is not a particular critical case, just the mismanagement of an engineer. I believe that more than a free shipping label to return the evidence of his or her error or an extra writing pen in my package is in order--to compensate for the unnecessary inconveniences I've endured. I made that request and was summarily denied. I hope never to have to use these services again, but I do commend those with whom I was in direct contact for at least trying to make a stressful situation less so. But considering the recovery service I received, I can't say I'd use this company again; well, truth is I hope I never end up losing data again. Since they no longer have the tools to fix my obsolete drive, they offered to reimburse me for my time & trouble. I cannot express the sheer terror I felt after the 4th attempt to restart my PC, and seeing the same error message appear. My frequent travel over the past 3 years with my laptop has been my excuse for not backing up regularly. I have now learned the hardest lesson...life experience has a way of teaching us things mere words and advice cannot... At first I purchased top 10 ranked software to attempt my own recovery which failed and furthur warned me not to continue, as further reading of the hard drive may damage the data further. And it was prudent not to proceed, because they ended up having to open my hard drive in the clean room apparently. I turned to Secure Data Recovery and they saved my data from distruction. They have been very professional from the first call to the final email to say they will be deleting my personal data after I confirmed all my data is safe and sound. I have since copied it to another hard drive. Although this was a costly expense, getting my data back was worth every cent to me. SDRS recovered what appears to be almost 100% of my data and gave me a directory list of the programs I had installed. I have tested many of my files and they open without problems. I also had an encrypted partition that they managed to restore to my great relief which had hundreds of family photo's on. Years worth of bookmark files, music files and playlists, and everything precious to me was restored. They charged me exactly what was quoted for which I was thankful for, as many companies lack integrity these days and bait and switch occurs. The company doesn't know what they are doing and takes every chance to charge you fees. First, I'm telling them what phone I have. The brand is OnePlus an android phone maker. Secure data responded "is that a Samsung?". NO! it's a OnePlus. That should have been my first sign they didn't know what they were doing when they think every android phone is a Samsung. After they had my phone for 2 weeks they call and leave a voicemail saying android security prevents them from imaging the disk and recovering the deleted files. Shouldn't a data specialist already know android security is going to prevent their method of recovery. Finally, after they couldn't recover anything they charged $25 to have the phone returned and didn't even send the phone back in its original box. So now I've lost photos, $75, and the original phone box. They did state there wouldn't be a diagnostic fee because they couldn't recover the photos. So what was the $50 diagnostic fee you already charged me? will that be refunded? Nope! I asked repeatedly to refund it since their own email said there was no diagnostics fee, but they refused. They hold the phone hostage saying they will throw it away in 14 days if you don't pay the $25 to have it returned, This "fee" is not mentioned until after they already have the device held hostage. Terrible company, hold you device hostage for a crazy return fee, and don't know anything about the phones they claim to be able to recover data from. Edit: After posting this review Secure Data reached out and asked for more details about the issue. They then offered to refund the fees. I appreciate the offer to fix things. This company might do OK work but they are terrible humans to work with. After working with another data company to retrieve my data that didn't go well, I went to Secure Data to hopefully retrieve the data, which they were able to (partially) do, which is why I can give them 1 star. However in the process, they tried to slander the other company I worked with, and sent them legal documents for signature in which I had the legal contract with them, that they didn't uphold to. How unethical is that?!? Yikes! Then on top of that they said they recovered all my data in which they only got about 1/4th of it, and told me I needed to prove what was missing (sorry I failed to take a photo of the drive capacity before it was accidentally damaged, I think that's a very unreasonable expectation). And when I did find holes in the recovery they said "that isn't enough holes" to warrant further investigation. This could have been resolved with simple communication, however during all this they wouldn't answer their phones (cowards?) so it could only be discussed over email. What kind of company does that? You might get OK work, but you will get truly horrible customer service. Just watch out before you go to them before data recovery! read more

Then they told me my drive had physical damage and that it would be $ 3,000 ! I said to them SEND IT BACK. They did in a paper thin box with with barely any bubble wrap around it. I was given a 5-9 day turnaround time for what they were confident would be a full recovery. While the quoted price was at the very top of the range I was initially given as an estimate, I was willing to pay it for the quick turnaround, full recovery, and reassurance that I was putting my drive in (what I thought were) reliable and capable hands. Well here we are a month and a half later and guess what I don't have??? My drive back OR a full recovery. Not only do they still have my drive, but they weren't able to get even close to a full recovery. I am beyond fed up and have gone through three different representatives at this point because everyone keeps passing me off to their bosses. I have been given so many excuses as to why things have been going this way...and the relationship has been far from transparent. I've been told it's a busy time of year for them...well then give a more REALISTIC turnaround time!!! They've told me (after my 5-9 day turnaround was well past) that my drive damage was extensive and they knew it'd likely take all, if not more, of the quoted time...but THEY NEVER TOLD ME THAT UPFRONT!!! I paid for expedited service. They recovered (I think) the information in a reasonable amount of time. They took forever to respond to paperwork needed to allow them to get paid (I work for a state institution so there are 3 pieces of paper that need to be signed) It has been over three weeks since the data was recovered, and I still do not have it. Buyer beware that if you use Secure Data, once your service has been completed, your sales representative will continuously ask you to write a review of them and the company until you actually do. Additionally, you'll also get a QA call if you don't write a review to write a review on multiple social networks. I politely declined to the first two times I was asked and then the third time I told them never to contact me about writing a review again. Guess what happened... lo, and behold, another somewhat automated email outlined a service that was only provided because I asked for a lower price, not voluntarily offered, and again used language to almost guilt the customer in to writing one. Well, here it is: Hope you're happy SecureData, I'm writing a review to advise people not to use this service if they want peace after the service has been provided. No Stars. I did not trust "Secure Data" to touch my hard drive after finding out they lied about their locations. They said they had a Sacramento location which turned out to be nothing but a drop off site. Drop your drive off and they ship it to LA. I spoke to them on the phone, told them what I wanted, insisted I needed the recovery done quickly so I would drive to their Sacramento office in the morning. They never once explained that there was no actual work or employees or anything but a drop site in Sacramento. This kind deliberate deception and intentional misdirection destroyed any possibility of trust with these folks. What are they trying to hide? Why is their website set up to show locations they don't actually have? You decide what's important to you. I don't trust them and would never do business with them! read more
