Clothes from Target are great, but I have little confidence they'll survive long as second-hand pieces. There are always a few nice DVF dresses or Theory suits mixed in with the more questionable apparel, but I've noticed the good stuff goes quickly. (I have to wonder if Juliana S. got to the DVF dress I loved while I was in my "Decider" period. *shakes fist*) So if you have an hour to kill and don't mind going through a lot of dated clothing and dealing with dismissive staff to snag a dressing room to maybe find something awesome, I guess you could spend your hour at Secondi. I've consigned at several places but I would say this has the worst ROI, I've only made $40 over the course of consigning twice with over 20 items. And once the items expire, you do not get your items back, they are "donated." Other consignment places offer your items back if they do not sell. Also their items for sale are very overpriced, I've never been able to find a good deal. Their shoe selection is a hot mess, scuffs and just messy looking, and the shoes are located in 3 different areas, I'm not even sure how they sell shoes? Just visited this place for the first time ever today and I would never go back. First of all, the store smelled terribly. Secondly, I was never greeted even though I passed by several sales people (they were all having their own individual gossipy conversations with other people - I guess they are not interested in customers, just socializing). Thirdly, the place was a mess - nothing was straightened, and everything just plainly looked messy. Regarding what they carried, you could find items of similar style on eBay that 1. weren't as overpriced, 2. were in better condition, and 3. didn't smell awful. I couldn't stay in the shop any longer than about 5-10 minutes - the smell was that awful. I don't know how people can work/shop in there. Anyway, I won't ever be going back. You may have missed Secondi above the Starbucks on Connecticut, but it is definitely worth a look. I finally checked it out after living in the area for over a year. I wish I had gone sooner! A little crowded, the store is nicely organized by size. I didn't have to do much digging like in other consignment stores. Secondi has a wide range of brands from Ann Taylor to designer Kate Spade and Diane von Fürstenberg. The clothes are all good quality and well made. You can also find jewelry, purses, and shoes. The shoe section was pretty disorganized so I didn't even bother looking for my size. The staff was very friendly. Within a few minutes of entering they explained their pricing-- items get marked down the longer they are on the racks. Their inventory changes often. I would highly recommend giving Secondi a look next time you have a few minutes to kill in Dupont. read more

I signed up for Yelp only because I wanted to tell everyone how HORRIBLE the customer service is. I had the worst conversation with the manager there. She was completely unprofessional when I ask about potential positions there. Not to mention that she ask my age, which a HR red flag and grounds for an age discrimination lawsuit. For a half decent store operating in a competitive market, they should certainly know better. Based on customers I've spoken with and the website, there boutique isn't all that great anyway. (I have no idea why I even called.) Mustard Seed, in Bethesda, is certainly friendlier and has a better selection. I will never shop there and would never recommend anyone else to either! I like this consignment store a lot. I don't live in DC but this is my 3rd time visiting. They have a wIde variety of brands and items. The prices are pretty reasonable and go down over time which is great. Brands range from jcrew to Chanel. Definitely recommend if you're looking for luxury at affordable prices. read more

As an experienced and seasoned bargain shopper, they have a nice stock of designer and name brand clothes. However, this place is only a good deal if you are used to paying retail at department stores. I've found the same brands and designers for far less (and brand new) at Marshalls or TJ Maxx. This place rocks for shoes and purses. I even saw some Hermes scarves in here!! I didn't really care for the clothes to be honest. Maybe next time I'm in D.C., I'll definitely check out the clothes too. I saw designers from Jimmy Choo, Dior, Prada, Tory Burch, Chanel, Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, Chloe, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and many others. I bought a pair of Tory Burch heels for $65. Retail price for these were $300 and they weren't even used!!!! I also got a lovely Marc Jacobs (not Marc by Marc Jacobs, but actual MJ!) bag for $230 when it retails over $1200+. This place is definitely a must try if you're into designer goods. This place is very busy and they get new stuff every 15 minutes. They claim that they put new things out every 15 minutes but it's more like every hour or so, because they have to inventory it and tag etc. It could definitely be a mad house during weekends or after work. However, the thrill of finding a good bargain is what I enjoy the most. My only complaint is that the staff seem a little snobby and not helpful. I couldn't disagree about the service more, they were fantastic to me in here this week. I was looking for some unique jewelry for a friend's birthday and although they didn't have exactly what I wanted they had a pretty cool selection and August was some sort of 30% off sale. The girl helping me was an adorable little brunette and she even wrapped up my gift in a cool little box with tissue paper. Even though I was a guy, spending less than $50 even, this girl took super good care of me. I'm not sure if she was relatively new but we got some help with questions from a fellow coworker/manager/etc. on pricing and wrapping. I remember when they used to see clothes for men in here but no longer. If I ever need a gift for another girl I'm coming here again. I was in an out in less than 10 minutes and walked away feeling like I had a really great and unique experience, and I hate shopping in all its forms. read more

Probably the most well organized consignment store I've been to in the District~ I once found a pair of brown leather Valentino boots for $85!! I had to sit down and breathe into a paper bag I was so excited! They have dresses that would be appropriate to wear to balls and special events, all the way to tank tops and shorts for a beach weekend in Ocean City. One of my favorite things about Secondi is that they only sell purses and handbags from designers if they have verified their authenticity. I have consigned a few items here and the staff is super friendly and the consignment process is very convenient. They always set reasonable prices that are both good for the buyer and seller. They really do a good job of picking timely items that most women would love to have in their closets. read more

I dig consignment. I specifically dig well organized, well kept and high end consignment. Secondi is all of these things. My first visit was prompted by a hunt for semi-formal wedding attire, so I was focused on the dresses but made a point to peruse the entire store. I was impressed by the dress and suit selection! A lot of solids and classic pieces that fit somewhere between the office on a formal day and a dressed up Saturday afternoon. Like all consignment, there were stand out pieces (vintage designer) as well as sorry excuses to use a hanger (Forever 21!?). I would say their prices are fair and their selection is excellent. Not fabulous steals to write home about but a definite markdown from what you'd pay new or even on the clearance rack in a lot of the name brand stores. This trip's find: a J. Crew short sleeve sweater for $18. Not great but not bad either! The service was so-so. I was enjoying a mellow day off and I don't think my busted up blue jeans were appreciated by the fashionista counter help. I noticed the Dupont types were getting very attentive service while I, with an arm full of dresses, had to go and find someone to let me into a dressing room (she finished what she was doing before letting me in). I have visited this store about 4 times, but have yet to make a purchase. I have found some things I was interested in buying, but the price always prevented me from pulling the trigger. Firstly, the store is well organized even though there is A LOT of merchandise. There are some seriously beautiful pieces and some less high end but stylish options. As far as customer services, the women are very good about explaining their pricing and making sure you know how much the items are. BUT where they fall short is, although they have a lot of people working it was very hard to find someone to open a fitting room. Once I found someone all the rooms were full and she said she would find me when one opened, which didn't happen so I had to ask someone again. I awkwardly stood in the an obvious place, yet nobody checked on me to see what I needed. I went in looking for a new years eve dress and was willing to be more flexible with my budget - but still I walked away with nothing. I found a few dresses and skirts but nothing was just right in fit or price point. I won't give up on this store, I will continue to tell others to check it out - but I don't think I will go again on a weekend when they are busy. read more

I suggest reading the "not recommended" reviews as they are completely accurate. Enormously difficult to consign here and the owner is always "right". They removed original tags from my items (thus devaluing them), got haughty because I wanted itemized list, accounting of your items, which I need for itemization is horrendous and the owner tells me I do not need them (how does she know my tax situation) and due to me, the customer mind you, insisting I do; I am forbidden from consigning in the future. I'd forgotten that I had had much better, friendlier service at Current Boutique, which the owner reminded me of when she called two months after I had made a consignment appointment (the day before my scheduled appointment). Ella-Rue in Georgetown sold all my high-end pieces as has Inga at "Once is not Enough" ... all of these are very nice, educated and great at addressing customer concerns. read more

Eh. I've been a few times to shop, and never found anything I liked enough to buy. That's probably because 1) lots of the clothing was not to my taste (someone here said it's for an older crowd, which I agree with) and 2) the clothing that I might be interested in is pretty much buried with all the rest. I don't have tons of time to rifle through racks and bump into other shoppers. I also sold once, and I won't be doing it again. They picked 5-6 of the items I brought in (inexplicably not choosing a great Nicole Miller cocktail dress) from labels such as BCBG and DVF. In the end, I got a $90 check. I've sold on ebay before, and I easily could have gotten $300 for the items I have by going through that route. If you have the time, do ebay instead -- you don't have to worry about the "middleman's" markup and if it doesn't sell, you can just try again or choose to donate it (rather than having it donated on your behalf). read more

I heard about this place via word of mouth from a few people at work because I noticed they would sometimes show up in really fashionable, cute clothing. If you work in the non-profit industry it's not so easy to keep up with the lastest trends while keeping it professioanlal, classy and elegant enough for DC standards. This place is quite a find. They are located about 3 minutes from the Dupont circle metro and have a great selection of dress shirts and skirts for work from stores like Banana Republic, dresses for a variety of occasions, and handbags of different shapes and sizes many of which are still in good condition and marked down significantly. They only accept certain brands which have to be designer so it's guaranteed for a certain quality. Their prices also go down incrementally over time which is nice so just hope you get to the really good stuff first! The only thing I wish was a different system to check bags. It's a bit much sometimes pushing a heavy back pack over the counter and across other customers. read more

Especially when it's located in the center of a pricey posh neighborhood like Dupont (which means there's definitely a few designer gems lurking about on the shelves or on the racks). The place is upstairs and fairly small but very organized complete with small changing rooms on the far end. They keep a great selection of women's formal wear, skirts, career wear, accessories, jewelry and random knick knackery. Try to avoid visiting on Saturday afternoons if you can as the space can get really packed quick! The prices work in typical consignment shop fashion where the longer the sits the less you pay for it ...but really, will that perfect day-to-night Nicole Miller Sheath dress be here tomorrow? I don't know about you, Secondi...This is a second hand store for a dedicated treasure hunter. I'm a massive fan of consignment shops and was up for the challenge, but more conventional shoppers may be unwilling to wade through the crowded, unpredictable racks. Many of the brands are upscale, but most the clothes are just unflattering, in questionable taste, and surprisingly old or in bad condition. I even saw a few with stains, which is pretty unacceptable. Secondi is almost a little nervy to price some of their items the way they do. They care WAY more about the tag than the condition of the item. I understand wanting to get more money for a designer item, but no one is going to pay $150 for Miu Miu heels (or ANY pair of shoes) that are patently beat up. Some of the shoes, however, are brand new and reasonably priced. There is no "Secondi customer;" whereas Second Time Around was evidently for young professionals, Secondi covers a wide range of ages and styles. I ended up leaving the store with a $14 shirt originally from J. Crew in perfect condition, so I can't say I left without a good find! The customer service was great; cheerful clerks who didn't hover. THE GOOD: when you find a great item, it's freaking WONDERFUL and high quality. At the end of the day they DO have a good selection. THE BAD: You just have to wade through some pretty ick stuff to find the good. Dedicated consignment fans will be patient enough, likely not all shoppers. BOTTOM LINE: Give it a try! Located in a cozy walk-up in Dupont, Secondi is a serious consignment shop. The store is well-organized, but maintains an air of coziness with armchairs and couches interspersed among the clothing racks. In a casual perusal of the racks I found items from Rachel Roy, Chanel, Dior, and Burberry. Wow! The prices are on the higher end for a consignment shop, but you are definitely guaranteed a higher quality product. I checked out Secondi on the recommendation of a friend to consign a coctail dress. Though they strongly recommend scheduling an appointment, I walked-in with my dress in hand and was very graciously seen and taken care of. I was totally impressed with the knowledge and professionalism of the ladies working there. Do yourself a favor, while the economy is still limping along, find something beautiful and new-to-you at Secondi. read more

Secondi isn't your average, tasteless, stinky used clothing store. In fact, it's pretty unique. 1) First, there's the overall concept: Consignment goods are given a certain price when they're initially turned over to Secondi. If the item hasn't sold in 30 days, the price is reduced by 20%. After 60 days, it's reduced 40%. Once the item "expires" (I assume after 90 days total), Secondi donates the merchandise to charity. This seems like a very creative system. As a customer, I love the idea that items get cheaper as time goes by. But as a consigner, I'm not sure I'd love the idea. I mean, if I wanted my clothes donated to charity, why would I be trying to sell them? The whole "we don't pay you until your clothing sells AND we won't pay you at all for clothes that don't sell" arrangement is a little too convenient for Secondi. But again, the concept is great. It's a bit like gambling. For the customer, the dilemma is: Do you love an item enough to buy it at full price, or are you willing to risk waiting until the price dips? For the consigner, the problem is this: You want to give Secondi your best stuff so that you get money, but you have to risk losing the items and not making any money. I think the central truth is pretty obvious, no matter what: As in gambling, the house always wins. Secondi gets some of the best clothes, doesn't pay for them, and can't lose money. 2) As for the clothes themselves: They vary. I'm frankly surprised Secondi has "rigorous" standards for the items that come into the store because certain things are downright hideous. They claim they'll only accept designer clothes that are less than 2 years old, but there's some questionably ugly clothing that looks like it was made in a dark closet last century. It may not be dated, but to call it current would be a terrible misstatement. Nevertheless, there are some occasional good finds. Which brings me to prices... 3) The cost: Most of the good stuff is still relatively expensive. Prices are dramatically lower than the MSRP, but not dirt cheap. And most of the best stuff sells at its highest listed price because someone out there is willing to pay full price. So if you like something a lot- just buy it. I've rarely seen anything cute hanging out in its last 30 days. Most of the good stuff is -not coincidentally- a recently acquired item. The payoff for the consigner? If their item sells, they make 50%. read more

Accessories are the best deal here. I've picked up diamond studs for $50 and a near-pristine Hermes scarf for $165. The trick is to look for the small, hard-to-notice items that other people might have overlooked; every item's price automatically goes down at certain intervals (after 30 and then 60 days, I think), so something that's been there for two months or more is going to be a steal. Ask to see what's behind the counter, and check tags for price reduction dates. There's a good selection of designer clothing on offer, but prices are steep. (If I'm going to pay $400-$500 for a used Burberry trenchcoat, why not just save a few more months and get a new one?) Prices are more reasonable in the non-designer half of the store, but I find the racks there somewhat overcrowded and junky. For various reasons--high cost, overwhelming amount of merchandise, unforgiving styles--I rarely score great items of clothing here, but I do still enjoy the hunt. read more

I had a fabulous time browsing the collection of consigned clothing at Secondi, and can endorse them with five stars even though I didn't buy anything! It's a second-story shop, so unfortunately it's not terribly accessible. However, after climbing the stairs up, I was greeted by a friendly saleswoman who asked if I'd ever shopped with them before. She explained how their pricing works: all items have an initial price when they are consigned, and have lower prices that they will be reduced if they haven't sold by the corresponding date on the tag. Browsing through the racks, I was amazed by the quality of items-- everything was in great condition, and the brands were ones that lots of ladies would dream of owning but maybe couldn't afford to buy at retail price. I especially thought the shoe selection was pretty great. I can't wait to visit again! This time I just didn't find anything that was the perfect fit for me, but based on how recent many of the purchase dates were on the tags, it seems like their inventory changes regularly. read more

I walked into Secondi looking some designer goods at 6:30 today and I was greeted with a short hello. I walked through the store looking for something that would catch my eye. Most of the girls working there stood in my way talking to one another and no one offered to help me. As I left dissatisfied with the service the girl at counter near the entrance saw me walking away and said "well that was fast bye to you too" in a very condescending voice. Secondi has loads of high-end designer clothes, and if that's what you're looking for, you will pay for those labels. However, if you are interested in well-made clothes and the designer isn't your primary concern, you can do well here. The best part is that the cost is reduced the longer that the item remains in the stock. I believe that it's 10% off after the first month, and 20% after the second. I found all the staff to be very helpful. And the dressing rooms are really cute! If you are accompanied by someone who isn't interested in consignment shopping, La Tomate across the street is a good place to get a drink. read more

I'm a huge fan of "premium" denim brands but bristle at the notion of paying full price. So when Filene's Basement won't cut it, or when I'm eager for even more of a deal, I climb the stairs to Secondi. Every time I go, the selection of gently worn, well-scrubbed apparel seems to get better and better at this compact shop. It takes a little digging, but that's part of the fun. You'll find generally well-organized racks and lots of dressing rooms considering the size of the place. If you're claustrophobic, you may want to stay away on weekend afternoons. I had a lot of questions and all of the staff was really helpful. I feel all of my items was fairly priced, everything sold fairly quickly, and getting the money was easy. MAKE SURE you read at their website. They are really clear about what they take and don't take. If you have any questions I would call them. I had high end items like Mark Jacobs, Kate Spade, Coach, Long Champ..so, it was easy for me. But I hear about people all the time getting pissed about how they don't take Old Navy and Target stuff. Be aware before you go. I would also make an appointment the first few times you sell to them because they clearly explain why they did or didn't get an item. read more

I go to Secondi when: -I need to find a cocktail or formal dress for an upcoming event; -I want to experiment with designers and trends, but don't want to pay through the nose for said experiments; -I want to find supplemental pieces to update my wardrobe in between seasons; -I'm looking for thrifty work attire; and -I want statement jewelry pieces to spice up current looks in my closet. Secondi has quickly become my once-a-month (or twice....) stop for all this and more. I can't say I always walk out having found something fantastic, but I recognize that's possible with *any* resale establishment. I didn't see as much of a variety as some of the reviews led me to believe, but the store is cute and it seems that maybe I came on an off week and there will be more great finds at another time. I didn't realize someone was supposed to greet me, but I wasn't spoken to at all by anyone working there. It didn't bother me, but I can see why it might bother some. Unfortunately my shopping experience was ruined by another customer who kept talking loudly about how much money she had, the great designer items she had owned and spent money on, and generally throwing her cash around. Staff was nice to her and fairly indulgent but I couldn't wait to get out of there without purchasing anything. Can't imagine I'd be back and run the risk of running into her again. I walk by Secondi every day after work and I always expect it to be better than it is so I always stop in and then I always leave pretty quickly. The prices are ok but not really great and although there are lots of brand names, the actual styles are never very modern. Think well-preserved blazers and sundresses from your sister's1997 closet. The service is lackluster. That being said, I have found some things here--a cute BCBG sundress and some sandals. It is probably good for basics like t-shirts, straight skirts, and scarves. I have never found anything very remarkable (there are no drop-dead Escadas here), but never anything terrible either (likewise, no faded t-shirts from the family's 1990 vacation to the Grand Canyon.) The store is clean, well-organized, well-maintained, and the merchandise is updated frequently. If you search (and you should be prepared to search) there are usually some cute, hmmm-worthy pieces. It's reliably underwhelming but at least it's reliable. read more

I am in agreement with the customer service. The girls seem like they are more interested in their own things than what is going on with their customers. They weren't rude by any means, they were just too indifferent and preoccupied. Consignment stores and other such venues are a hit or miss kind of place. You can go in and find this absolutely fabulous Club Monaco top that screams "I'm cool and interesting in an understated way until I turn around and hello back!" (Yea, that is what the shirt said to me and I loved it) but then you find the weird things that designers decided to make when they couldn't think of anything flattering or better. It is all about time and patience which I am willing to spend here because it has the potential to hold a treasure. I say go to Secondi when you are on a lazy day walk through dupont and feel like having a browse. It isn't the must be place that Annie Creamcheese can be, but it is someplace where you can find a good piece or two of shoes or clothes if you look and have the fast hands to grab. read more

I love this place. I'm a big fan of their system of the price going down on specific dates, based on how long they've had it in stock. A lot of people I gush about Secondi complain that the prices are too high - and it definitely has its share of overpriced designer clothes. I. love. this.place. I agree with L J. that, from the street, I sort of felt that this was tailored for an older crowd- the retired tennis ladies, with pearls, toting around a Yorkie, ya know? I walked upstairs and the staff welcomed me immediately the atmosphere was bright and warm. I almost immediately found two dresses to try on and by the time I looked through the whole store I have three dresses and a top, also with an eye on a few pieces of the jewelry and belts. The belts were the best part for me because the big fat 80s waist belts are in now and I am super careful about spending money on trendy things unless I really like the trend. I was on the hunt for a nice wide tan leather belt with a huge gold buckle and found one for $21! They had amazing belts for $10, $17, $20 and I was like a kid in a candy store. Most of the shoes were a little too worn and a little too pricy for me. I wound up buying a brown dress with empire waist and bell sleeves for work, necklace, belt, bracelet, and halter for going out all for $91 and the only other place I'd get a deal like that would be H&M, barely. I had a hard time leaving and LOVED the adventure of not knowing what I'd find. Everything is really well-organized into styles and sizes and the purse and belt selections are incredible. This place rocks. Normally, I'm not a thrift store person--rooting through 45 old T-shirts or pleated front pants to find the "treasure" just isn't my thing. I came across it because I was walking through Dupont, it was cold, and I wanted to warm up. It happened to be the first place I came across that seemed interesting, and I'm glad I did. This place has alot of mainstream items--J Crew, Ann Taylor and the like. It's also nice because most of the styles are less than 2-3 years old (or, are about 20 years old, and therefore back in style again). You can get some amazing finds, though, for a pretty good price, which I'm always a fan of. My biggest complaint is finding whatever the item of my dreams is, in the wrong size. But I guess that's the risk you run with thrift shops. read more

This is one of the higher quality consignment stores in DC. Lots of excellent, high quality brands. Unfortunately, with prices to match. I don't know, paying $400 for something at a consignment store just seems ridiculous to me. But if you dig enough you'll find some good deals. The accessories, in general, are a great deal. There are more boots for sale here then I've seen at any other consignment shop. There's also plenty of sunglasses and bags. Not a bad place to kill some time if you're in Dupont - just don't necessarily expect to find a great deal. read more

Lots of decent finds, although it wasn't the consignment mecca I was hoping for. When you ascend the stairs, hang a right and focus on the "designer" area. Lots of great dresses, coats and skirts, but unfortunately, the price tags were a bit high. I mean, $76 for a Banana Republic jacket seemed a bit outrageous. I came very close to walking out with a cute strapless dress that would have been perfect for the unseasonably hot D.C. weather, however, I stopped myself from the impulse buy that would have sat in my closet forever waiting for a sunny Bay Area "summer" day. read more
