Well, during our "winter", my compressor sprang a leak and spewed its 1994 Freon all over the Earth's ozone. Sorry. Anyway, since I had the luxury of shopping for bids during our winter, I opted to get 4 bids before deciding on a final contractor. Think of it this way: How often do any of us shop for central air/heat? I think we shop for cars more often so I wanted to be careful in such a big decision. Here's the rundown: * Fly Comfort Services: Recommended both outside compressor and inside air handler be replaced for $4,700. Cash discount of 2.5%. No charge for evaluation. Found these guys via a fellow Yelper. They were flakier than a Crisco crust on writing up the bid in a timely manner (not a good impression for all that money they wanted to charge me). * Comfort Star: Recommended both outside compressor and inside air handler be replaced for $4,500. Cash discount of 2.5%. Charged $45 trip charge. Found these guys via Yelp search. The owner (Mr. Khoury) was very patient on discussing details and the technician's visit was very thorough (about 1.5 hours). * AC Repair Houston: Recommended only the outside compressor to be replaced for $1,850. No cash discount. No charge for evaluation. Found them via Yelp search. Mr. Jack Jensen is the salt of the earth; actually mentioned that many of his AC brethren have reputations similar to used car salesmen. * M&L Air Conditioning: Recommended only the outside compressor to be replaced for $1,700. No cash discount. No charge for evaluation. Referred by my Realtor who I've worked with on the buying and the selling sides. Winner: M&L Air Conditioning! Mr. Atkins was friendly, down-to-earth, approachable, and informative. He didn't try to sell me on anything unnecessary and even pointed out the pros, cons, and secondary alternatives of the replacement options. He's so confident in his work that he doubled the usual 1-year labor warranty for free. He provided an arrival time window (10 to noon) but, unlike the evil Comcast, he arrived at 1010 AM for his projected 3-hour installation. He even finished 20 minutes ahead of the installation timetable, despite my periodic questions of "What's that?" I wrote him a personal check for the $1,750 once the Goodman 13 SEER 2-ton compressor, condenser pad, and programmable thermostat were installed and tested. With the blizzard of contractor visits, I've learned a lot about the old and new refrigerant standards, the minimum SEER ratings, air handlers, compressor-condensers, pads, duct work, and fair prices for all of these items. I also got pretty dang good at verifying their licenses at the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation website, too. I'm almost sure that I could get an AC contractor license easily with the volume that I know now. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got a date with my new A/C system to spend some quality time chilling things down. Situatlon: Back in late May my Carrier AC unit went out. I was without cooling for 3 weeks and it…read morewas starting to get very hot. During that time I tried to trouble shoot the issue myself by replacing the capacitor and the switch block. Both did not yield any result. The unit was getting no power to it at all. I figured there was an issue with the Air Handler unit in the attic. I know that was going to be over my head. So I needed an AC person and did not know anyone in the area Solution: I called Precision AC based on a friend's recommendation. I am so glad that I did Scott came by with his assistant Rider listened to the issues and steps I took to troubleshoot. Scott also checked the wiring on the compressor unit and said that everything is pretty much in place. They looked at my Air Handler in the attic and found the issue with the unit. Scott says that a wired had burned out and blew the transformer. Scott and Rider fixed the issue and got the Air Handler unit working. Scott really knows his stuff around AC units. The blowing cool air was music to my ears. Results: If you want a expert on AC units Scott is the person to call. He will troubleshoot the issue and you will find his pricing very reasonable. I can't thank Scott and Rider enough for getting my unit fixed. They saved my from getting cooked in my own home.

I was recommended Redmon Heating & Air Services by a neighbor of mine who happens to be a general contractor. He told me they were honest and provided high-quality work. The level of communication and the expectation that is set is great. You're kept up to date and if there's any changes or delays with your appointment, you're notified with an updated ETA. I had Randy come out last year to inspect an issue that I had with my AC unit. He inspected it and recommended a repair along with unclogging my primary drain line. What I appreciate about Randy is that if it can be repaired, he will repair it. He will not force you to buy a new unit or system like many other companies. My AC unit and furnace was on the older side, but he repaired it successfully and saved me money when I needed it. Fast-forward to over a year later, my furnace was having issues and not staying lit. I gave Randy a call and he was able to come out the same day to look at it. Randy inspected it, tested it with a new part he brought with him, and it still was not staying lit. He told me it was likely the circuit board that was failing given the age of the furnace and other factors. Factoring in the cost for a new circuit board and the age of my furnace, he told me it would be best to replace it. He was able to give me different options and explained each of them in detail. He answered all of my questions and did not make me feel rushed or pressured into anything. After offering me a deal I couldn't refuse, we finally came to an agreement on replacing the furnace and AC unit together so that it would be matching. Randy went above and beyond and got the units hot shotted over so that it could be replaced the next day as there was cold weather in the forecast and he didn't want me freezing. Fernando, Randy's right-hand man, showed-up right on time with his team and got to work with replacing everything. Fernando, Martin, and the rest of the gentlemen kept me informed with the whole process. They also offered to have me come up in the attic to see the replacements and if they were to my satisfaction. These guys worked hard and were able to get my brand new furnace and AC unit up and running within just a few hours. They provided me with all of my paperwork for the units and answered any questions that I had. Fernando also went above and beyond by going to the hardware store and purchasing a new return air filter grille and new filters for the new system. I didn't even mention this to him but he wanted to surprise us. He told me that he noticed my grille was older and that he could get filters that would fit my air return vent since it's an odd size. It's the small things like this that provide a great experience and set apart the best from the rest. I could tell by talking to Fernando that he takes his work seriously and enjoys what he does. Randy called me when the work was finished to ensure I was satisfied and asked me if I had any questions for him. This was a 5-star experience all around. Thank you Randy, Fernando, Martin, and everyone else who came out. I'll continue to use Redmon Heating & Air Services in the future and I highly recommend them to anyone who is needing HVAC service.

Cameron came out and just cut the hose and charged $200 after saying what a horrible setup we have that AINSWORTH did! Glad he was so honest! Next day we had water EVERYWHERE because he never used a SHOP VAC to clean or do anything. I guess he thought cutting the hose where it could possibly be clogged what do the job, but even me (a nurse) knows better than that. You could turn the AC off for a couple hours and turn it back on and of course it will run and that is exactly what he did after we had it off for several hours. He just turned it back on and said everything was OK! Worst service ever! And to actually know we are maintenance clients we should've had a little bit of a better experience. I had a 16 year old air conditioning system that of course quit cooling properly once the outside…read moretemperature hit 90 degrees. After a little research on the internet and reading reviews of A/C companies I chose to contact a local company and contacted Abel Mechanical Services to come out and diagnose the problem. I hadn't had a previous issue in years but the symptom was my system was low on Freon. I was planning on just adding Freon and hoping it would last through the summer and then I was going to have my total system replaced once it got a little cooler. Abel and his technician Chris arrived the next day after I contacted his company and starting diagnosing my outside unit. The first thing the gauges told us was I was low on Freon which was no surprise. While Abel and I were discussing the age of my unit and me telling Abel that I was considering just adding Freon and making it last a little longer Chris was checking the condenser coil for leaks and taking some readings on the amperage draw of the compressor and the fan motor. Both the compressor and fan were outside of their normal rated draws. No Freon leaks were found in the outside coils. There was no sales pitch made. They told me they could add Freon but could not tell me how long it would last because there was a leak somewhere and how long the Freon would last was unknown because they had not found the leak yet. I made the decision immediately to lean toward replacing my entire heat and cooling system now rather than "rolling the dice" since both the heating and cooling units were 16 years old and based on the compressor and fan out of tolerance amp readings provided by Abel and Chris. There was no sales pitch to sell me a new system. They said it was totally up to me as to whether to repair or to replace my system based on their findings. My common sense told me to replace due to the measurements and age of the system so I was the one to ask Abel for the cost of a total system change out. We agreed on a price for a new system. I really appreciated the relationship I had with Abel and Chris. They were very open to answer any of my questions. I could tell based on our interactions that I wanted to continue to do business with this company and that they were honorable and trustworthy. A couple of days afterward Abel's installation crew, including Abel and Chris arrived early in the morning and in less that 8 hours my old system was removed and my new heat and air conditioning system was in and working. Everything was done in a orderly and professional manner. All the old parts and trash was removed and my property was left as clean as it was when they arrived. Thanks to Abel Mechanical Services for a job well done.

The average cost with some google suggests the replacement for a TXV should cost between $185 to $750. Not only are they not standing by their work, they are looking to make a quick buck even after collecting upwards of $20k from me for my air conditioners. I regret ever letting this company do new units in my home. Clearly they do not stand by their work. On top of this, they've rebranded to Houston HVAC Alliance which makes it hard to follow the trend of their business

I paid it but only a week later it stopped working because it wasn't a capacitor I needed it was to replace the coil per another company who also told us they were unsure why they would replace the capacitor when the coil was obviously needed to be replaced. The tech assured me that EVERYTHING looked good except for my drip pan. I asked the company if there was anything they could and of course, there was nothing they could do.
