Colleen was recommended by Jenny Yoo Chicago where I bought my dress. I needed hemming, a bustle, and requested for her to take down the lace paneling that is in the front of my dress. Although, it took a few fittings (one being my fault for panicking that it may be too short-Colleen let me come in for a quick fit to ensure the length was right), it turned out perfect! I was anxious about the lace panel being lowered correctly, Colleen herself seems unsure that it could be done in a way that would look like it hadn't been touched, but it ended up being exactly what I wanted. The one thing is that it took a couple months, but that speaks to her quality of her work, she always has clients and always has business, so she is always busy! Additionally, last minute I brought in a sweater dress that I wanted taken in and she whipped it up on the spot while I changed into my gown. I've had alterations done on 2 items here for pre wedding events. Most recently Colleen did alterations on the dress I wore to my wedding shower. I knew it needed to be hemmed and have the sleeves shortened, but when I tried it on she immediately noticed a need to move the darts on the bust. She was so right. I recently had my wedding dress altered by Seams. I am a COVID bride and had some last-minute changes that prevented my original alterations shop from completing my dress on time, so I was glad to find that Seams had availability for a 1.5 month turnaround! My dress was a store sample that I bought off the rack; thankfully, it fit me nearly perfectly and just needed some buttons replaced and a bustle added. Due to my busy work schedule, I originally planned to pick my dress up 1 month before the wedding, but when I went to pick it up the work was not completed (there had been a family emergency with the seamstress assigned to my dress - understandable in these chaotic times!). The shop owner offered to finish the dress that day while I waited, but instead I was able to return 2 weeks later to pick it up. On my wedding day, everything looked beautiful and functioned perfectly! My sister had some fun figuring out the bustle (see pictures) but after viewing the video I took of us bustling the dress in-store, she was able to place it perfectly. Colleen is fabulous! I first came to her for advice about fixing small pieces to a sample size wedding dress (April 2009) I saw in a designer store I was interested in buying off the rack. She was extremely helpful and knowledgable. Although I did not go with that dress, I did bring the gown I bought to her and she did a fabulous job. There were many detailed pieces and she took her time to complete the fittings and changes perfectly, even removing crystals for alterations and re-applying to complete the job. As I have recently lost weight and need to have all my pant taken in, she is my go to person! I would recommend her for all types of clothes and fabrics. She has been in the business for a long time and is very knowledgable. She has a great eye for style, design, and body shape that will make you look great in everything! Collen does a great job altering clothes. However, altering your clothes when she says she will is a different story. Two shirts of mine needed to be taken in on the side seams over a month ago - a very simple job. I brought them in and was told they'd be done the next Thursdsay. Next Thursday rolls around, I came to pick them up and Colleen said "oops, I meant to call you, I got busy and didn't get around to doing them - can you come back on Monday?" So, I came back the next FRIDAY....4 days after it was supposed to be done....and it still was not done! At this point, I'm livid. I don't live near by and it's such an inconvenience to borrow a car to get to her store. She assured me at that point they'd be done the next day. Well, I got busy and a week and a half later called to confirm they were done so I could come pick them up. Know what happened? You guessed it, they STILL were not done. While she does a great job, it's not worth it. Unless you have months to waste waiting for your clothes, do not go here. read more

Colleen recently altered my Jenny Yoo wedding dress for my big day. She did a wonderful job. She was very thoughtful in tailoring the dress to how I wanted it to fit and look. She added a bustle, which was secure and very easy to tie up. She also gave me advice in steaming my dress (I would be traveling with it) and suggested a good stain remover just in case (thankfully not needed). I was referred to Seams and decided to bring my wedding dress there after seeing the positive Yelp reviews. However, my experience there has left me stressed, frustrated, and very unimpressed. I had high hopes after my initial meeting with Colleen. She seemed on top of things and offered some great ideas for how to alter my dress and veil, which I agreed with. I felt confident that I would be taken care of. My first fitting went relatively smoothly. My dress was coming along nicely. I made an appointment for my next fitting a few weeks later. I showed up for that appointment a few weeks later and was told by Colleen that I somehow had not made it onto her handwritten list of appointments for that day, even though I was clearly in her computer system based on the reminder I had gotten for the appointment. She had not done ANY additional work on the dress and said there was no point in trying it on that day, asking me to come back a week later. At no point during this visit did she offer any sort of apology; in fact, she seemed amused by the situation and unbothered by the fact that my friend and I had made a trip to her for nothing. So, we returned the following weekend. The dress was ready to go, but when I asked to try on the veil, Colleen commented that she had totally forgotten about the veil -- she HAD NOT STARTED any of the work we discussed. This was supposed to be my final appointment with both vel and dress totally complete. She didn't remember what we had talked about her doing for it, even though many of the suggestions were hers from that first meeting! I asked if she had the notes somewhere -- no, she hadn't written anything down. She said to come back in a few days (it was Saturday; so we made an appointment for that Tuesday). I took the dress home that day and she asked if I wanted to settle up -- at that point I requested that the veil be comped given all the issues I had had up to that point, and she said "yes, I was going to offer that." It was ridiculous that I had to suggest the veil be comped. Again, there was not a single moment during this appointment when Colleen apologized or even had the appearance of being sorry for the issues up to that point. On Tuesday, before I went to pick up the veil, I called to triple check it would be ready. It still was not complete. She asked for another day to let the glue dry and the sequins to set. When I unpacked the veil on my wedding day, there was glue showing throughout. Very disappointing. Colleen does good work but she is unorganized and not customer-oriented. As stressful as planning a wedding can be, the last thing a bride needs is someone who is unreliable and pushing things to the last minute. I wasted a lot of time going back and forth for appointments that were not productive and was not offered hardly any sort of price discount in return. I'm sure others can find alterations with the same amount of skill but none of the stress and mistakes I found here. read more

The store where I purchased from quoted a 3+ month timeline for my fittings, which I couldn't do because we were moving out of state a few weeks before the wedding. I was relieved when I found Colleen, who went above and beyond to make my shortened timeline work, and did exquisite tailoring on my complicated lace dress. Colleen made what could have been a stressful experience positive and fun. I trusted her so much that I wasn't worried when my move required her to finish the alterations without me, and then send the dress to California. She took time out of her busy schedule to ship it, and even texted me hand-drawn instructions on how to tie the bustle so that we would know how to do it properly. What a wonderful experience! I took my BHDLN lace bridal gown to Colleen for alterations and she did an amazing job. She asked great questions and provided clear explanations to make sure my qualifications were met. She also made me a custom veil which matched my dress perfectly and was much more affordable than many commercial bridal shops. The total price of alterations was very fair and a great deal for her high quality work. Her online appointment system also made it easy and convenient to book and modify appointments as needed. My rating is not based on the services that I've received, because I actually didn't get to the point where I can say something about their services. Here is the story: I decided to shorten sleeves of my suit jacket. I did a little research on sewing & alteration places and decided to go with Seams, because they were close to my apartment and seemed like a good place to go based on other reviews. I grabbed my jacket and walked to the place on Friday before Memorial Day weekend - the place was closed. I assumed that they were closed for a long weekend and decided to call and try going there again on Tuesday. After multiple calls and several walk-by attempts, I finally decided to leave a message (in case I need an appointment). I am still waiting for them to call me back! NO message on the answering machine maybe saying that they are on vacation or with their hours of operations. NO notes at the door. What kind of business operates like this? Maybe they went out of business? I am not sure what is going on with them, but definitely try calling before actually going there. read more

I cannot say enough kind things about Colleen. For my wedding this past April, Colleen handled the alterations for both my dress and my bridesmaids' dresses, which included creating a dress for one of my bridesmaids from scratch - no small task, especially in the throws of wedding season. She also did a few additional odds and ends tasks for me- she created a flower girl basket, which turned out more adorably than I could have imagined; and when I asked her to steam the shawls I purchased as gifts for my bridesmaids, she returned them to me gift wrapped with matching bows. She went above and beyond to make sure the final product was perfect, and was always accommodating of last minute schedule changes. Seams came to me from a referral of another seamstress who did not have time to help with my dress. I was looking for someone to alter a bridesmaid dress that had very detailed sequins and beading all over. Truth be told, I was rather nervous to get my dress altered just given intricacy of the design. From the minute I stepped into Seams, I felt extremely comfortable the dress was going to be taken cared of beautifully. The consultation was great, and they even showed me other dresses they worked on that were similar to mine to ease my concerns and hesitations of altering a heavy beaded dress. When I picked the dress up, you could see how thorough and careful the altering was. I was not only impressed by the work but also the cost - SUPER AFFORDABLE!!!
