Here's a place that's been on our radar for some time mostly because of the geography and secondly for its similarities to some of the waterfront restaurants of my past growing up near City Island NY. My girlfriend has been to the Armory in the past and wanted me to not only check out the restaurant but also the amazing views of the surrounding landscape. Parking is plentiful in the area and that was surprising with the amount of cars already parked. Parking was free which was a huge surprise! The restaurant is a beautiful historic building right smack on the water flanked by protected marinas filled with gorgeous boats and lovely homes across the way. When I hit lotto I will be purchasing a home here on the waterfront. We were immediately seated and waited a short while for our waiter to acknowledge us but it wasn't an issue. We ordered our drinks, apps and entree and I clearly stated that I didn't want my entree served until after our appetizers were done. I guess the kitchen feels differently. My Heineken Light was a regular Heineken served without a glass so I guess that's the light version and my girlfriend's Lychee Martini was very good. Served in a glass. We started with the Blue Point Oysters which we both were looking forward to and they looked fresh. Only served with cocktail sauce and lemon which was a disappointment since I was expecting mignonette but you can't have everything. The oysters were completely washed out, rinsed off and without any flavor. Please tell the shucker not to run the oysters under the faucet. Huge disappointment. Halfway through the appetizer our entree was served. A nice portion of halibut served with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach. We pushed our oyster plates to the side and put the halibut in the center of the table. Our waiter knew we were sharing the entree but no plates were served so we used our bread plates. Fish was delicious but over cooked and the mashed potatoes were lumpy and tan colored which can only mean that they were sitting in the steam table for quite some time. Overall I would say if you're going for the view it's beautiful. If you're going for the food keep driving. I won't be going back. I do want to make one more comment. A couple sitting next to us ordered two entrees one being the paella. It was served in a nice size metal casserole dish that was absolutely filthy with old charred food and grease still clinging to the outside of the dish. Please get grease cutter, heat those casserole dishes and have them cleaned. How any chef could let that pass through to the customer is completely negligent. read more

The good: calamari appetizer was very good, sangria was very good, the bus person was very good and helpful. seating was on time for our reservation. The bad: Waiter was unresponsive. Didn't follow up with table at all. Ask how meal was...anything needed, etc. 40 minute wait between appetizer and main meal is unacceptable. (Maybe our order was lost. When delivered to table, bus person apologized). Waiter...nothing! Food/paella was good...but no better then other Spanish/ Portuguese restaurants in the area. First time, probably last time. I haven't been to Seabra's in years. It's still as good as I remember it. This historical landmark does paella right. It's located on the Marina and has beautiful views of the water. I met my friend here for dinner. We started with cocktails. The sangria and Cabernet were both good. The house salad was huge and had asparagus in it. We loved the house dressing as well. We decided to share the paella Valencia. Glad we did because it was enormous. The two of us couldn't finish it. Lol. The rice was delicious and cooked perfectly. It was loaded with mussels, clams, scallops, shrimp, chicken and sausage. It also had a half of lobster as well. It was delicious! I can't wait to eat the leftovers tomorrow. Lol The service was very good and the staff were friendly and attentive. I live in Florida and you can't get good Portuguese food there. Although some of the dinners were good others were not as follows: a) The twin lobsters were served with no side dish provided. I went here for the first time Saturday after hearing mixed reviews. Honestly, the 3/5 stars is a very accurate rating. Below is my full assessment. Food: My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate my recent promotion at work. Because of this, we had intentions of having a four course dinner. Appetizer: We started with the appetizer special of mussels in garlic. The mussels were great, but nothing special. I wish that they were served with bread so that I was able to appreciate the sauce more. Entree: My boyfriend had the chicken and chourico casserole. He said the chourico was great and the rice was flavorful, but the chicken was horribly dry. This portion is also HUGE. He had enough left over for two lunches after his meal. However, even when boxing it up, he picked out the chicken because it was so bad. I had the crab cake stuffed tilapia fillet which came with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. The tilapia was slightly over cooked, which made the top a little too crispy for my liking. The crab cake inside was phenomenal. Going back, I'll order just the crab cakes. The mashed potatoes were great as well. The vegetables were average at best. Little to no seasoning and slightly undercooked. Dessert: We actually ordered 3 desserts: the creme brûlée, the chocolate mousse, and the tiramisu. The chocolate mousse was good, not great. It tasted too much like cocoa powder and had the texture of melted/refrozen ice cream more than a true mousse. The creme brûlée was horrible. The caramelized sugar was it's only saving grace. The cream itself was bland, not sweet at all, and wasn't even set. To be honest, it was a runny mess. They saved themselves with the tiramisu. It was delicious. The perfect amount of coffee and rum in the lady fingers. And the marscapone was delicious. Definitely will go back just for the tiramisu!! Service The service was great. they were exceptionally busy, being a Saturday night. Regardless, the wait staff was close by and attentive. Atmosphere The atmosphere was the reason I chose to go with 3 stars and not 4. I expected the restaurant to be crowded, given that it was a Saturday night, but I could literally touch other tables in any direction I put my hand out. The wait staff also brought out 4 different cakes and sang happy birthday 5 times throughout my meal. To me, this gave the vibe of a Texas Roadhouse more than an upscale seafood restaurant. There was also two other weddings or parties on the upper levels above the restaurant that played ridiculously loud music throughout the entire night. It was literally loud enough to make my table and chair vibrate. If you go, do yourself a favor and go on a casual Tuesday to avoid these issues. read more

I recently finally went out to dinner and the first place I chose was to go to The Armory. This was my first time here but went off a recommendation and let me tell you I really don't regret going here at all. When we first got there the place seemed quite over packed but after speaking with the hostess I was able to get my name on the list and she said it would take about 45 minutes for a table for two. After almost an hour I went to go check to see how far along my table was, she apologized and I was seated within the next 15 minutes. This right here is the only negative thing I have to say. When you go out to a restaurant that is not a fast food joint expect some wait time but I give the staff credit for managing the crowd that they had an allowed people to sit and drink while they waited obviously while maintaining proper distance due to COVID-19 regulations. While we were waiting we decided to get a picture of the red sangria and boy let me tell you is it lethal. I have never had sangria like this before it literally taste like fruit punch so be careful with how much and how fast you drink LOL! After we were seated I will later probably came up to us and asked us if we wanted to order drinks so we ordered another picture of mango sangria and I felt like I was drinking mango juice. However they are mixing their sangria don't change it because it works for you guys! To start off appetizers we ordered crabcakes and Portuguese sausage which is pretty much chorizo. The crabcakes were nice and fluffy and extremely fresh and the Portuguese sausage was very well cut and perfectly cooked. I was not expecting the massive portion that we got and I ended up filling up on appetizers which made me change my mind for my entree. For my entrée I was originally going to get the surf and turf which is 7 ounces of Brazilian lobster tail with I think it was 12 ounces of sirloin steak. But after filling up on appetizers I chose to get the garlic shrimp and rice dinner. Right when I thought these portions couldn't get any crazier my dinner came out and I kid you not I must have had about 30 pieces of shrimp on my plate, I was in Heaven. Dinner was spectacular and obviously the leftovers we took to go. The shrimp was very well cooked in the garlic sauce but not overcooked and the rice was fluffy and not dry and sticky. Our waiter was very nice and friendly even though he was in charge of several tables on the floor he always gave us a lot of attention and made sure we were doing fine whenever he had a chance. I really enjoyed my experience here and the outer ambience was really nice as well. It is very clean and organized and you have a beautiful view of the marina leading into the lower New York Bay. I would highly recommend this place if you are looking for a nice quiet date night or a nice fancy dinner. But remember not all good things come cheap. Cheers! read more

I come here with my friends on regular bases, this time we were 5 guys, we ordered food for $362, one of the orders were 3-clams in garlic, it didn't test good at all, so we asked to replace 2 of the orders with calamari's since we tried one of them, the waiter said I can't return it because I will end up paying for it, we asked for the manager and he said, im sorry, you ordered it you will need to pay for it even though you don't like it. We paid for the whole thing and we gave the clams back to him. In short, we will never come back to this resturant, the manager needs to be trained on how to handle customers especially when the customers don't like some of the food. read more

Came here for a bridal shower. We were located in the room that outlooks the waterfront. It was a bit cloudy but I'm sure on sunny days it must look extremely beautiful. The room was located on the third floor. There's an elevator to get here if you choose to not walk up the pretty spiral stairs. Finding the place was actually a bit difficult. And that's where I minus a star. I probably wouldn't get out my car if I had to come here in the evening. There's no visible sign that points to this location. They also have valet parking which I wasn't aware of since I couldn't find the place. I parked across the street. Street parking was available. The food option we had was brunch. Everything tasted great! My favorite was the egg Benedict's. They did have a carving station but I was so full I didn't get to try it. Food was served in buffet style. As for drinks we had water, pitcher of soda, pitcher of mimosa and bottle of wine. Of the dessert option I got grapes, strawberries, flan and cake. The decor all over was very nice. It had a marina touch to it all inside. There was even another party going on across the hall but we had no idea because it was that far away and the place was so big you couldn't hear it. read more

06/28/21 Unacceptable Service This past summer, we decided to have lunch at The Armory. It was a Monday midday, the Temperature was a blistering 92 degrees. Normally we sit at the bar, but I wanted a better view of the sailboats. So we sat at a table. A waiter came over and asked if we wanted drinks from the bar. We looked at the drink menu and the waiter walked away. My friend said, "the waiter walked away angrily". I looked in the direction of the waiter who was walking away. He turned and glared at me with a 'look of disgust'. I thought to myself, " I guess we didn't order drinks fast enough?!" When he returned, we order 2 drinks (Miami vice and a frozen margarita: 3 stars, the drinks were just ok. They were both slightly Kool and I could barely taste the alcohol). We ordered chicken marsala and bacalhau. The waiter tried to dissuade me from ordering bacalhau, he said that it was too salty. I informed him that I grew up on bacalhau. He said, "Ok, I brought a bottle of Louisiana Hot Sauce just in case". I said, "Thank you". Twenty minutes later, the Chicken Marsala came without the bacalhau. I would have said something to the waiter but he totally disappeared. He returned twenty minutes later with the bill. Thankfully, It did not include the bacalhau. If we would have had an average waiter, between the entree that I ordered and another round of drinks, the salescheck would have been at least $100 more. This was totally unacceptable service. Historically, I eat at the bar and I always receive 4 star service. The name on the salescheck was Freddy and I do not plan to return anytime soon. read more

I was showing some friends from California the area around Woodbridge NJ. I had been going to the Armory for Saturday afternoon lunch for the past three weeks so what better way to show off the Perth Amboy waterfront than to have some drinks and seafood appetizers. The armory has about 20 tables set up for outdoor dining. Since only four of them were occupied I asked the hostess if we could sit there and enjoy some drinks and appetizers. The tab for the three of us was $173. but the unfriendly hostess told us we could only sit at the bar. yet I had lunch at these same waterfront tables a week before and spent $163 for lunch. very poor customer service on their part. Now I'm going to take my business to the Barge restaurant across the street. if you have empty tables and someone is spending $173 ffor drinks and appetizers let them sit at the outside tables we were only there for two hours and you could have turned the tables four time during the afternoon and evening I guess no one can think anymore . read more

I went to this place a day earlier to check if reservation is required for a table on Saturday Sept 4. The nice lady said no and only walk in. On Saturday, I arrived with my party of 5 at 6:30pm. The wait or outside area is 60 to 90 min. I went inside and left the name and phone number. Look like my name is the first on the list. Went outside and wait for the call. After 45 min, went back in and check. My name was cross out. They said they called but no one answer. Then I realized the lady wrote down the phone number with the last number incorrect. Sadly, I did not check to confirm, my bad. But the lady attitude is not great, not friendly, like she has a bad day. With that kind of reception, definitely drive people away. The food is ok.
