I've been to Scratch in Independence a handful of times, but this is my first time finally writing a review and it's well deserved because this place never disappoints. I met a friend for breakfast this morning, and everything from start to finish was spot on. I ordered the Sweet Jalapeño Sandwich: an English muffin piled with jam, bacon, an egg cooked over medium, and cheddar, served with home fries. It was the perfect balance of sweet, savory, and just a little kick. My friend stuck with her usual: the Banana & Bourbon Caramel Bread Pudding French Toast, topped with fresh bananas and their homemade bourbon caramel sauce, plus a side of pork belly. It looked incredible and, according to her, tasted just as good as it always does. We arrived just a few minutes after they opened at 8:00 and were seated right away. The service was friendly, attentive, and very prompt without feeling rushed. Scratch has such a great casual, local diner feel, but with a menu that's anything but ordinary. This is the second time I've visited Scratch. The first was roughly 12-18 months ago. Both visits were awesome. The restaurant has a pleasant, bright, family diner ambiance. White walls, glass windows in front, a few things hung on the walls. Not fancy, but pleasant. Very clean. The food is phenomenal. I've been dreaming about their biscuits and gravy since my last visit. Still perfect. The home fry-style potatoes are what a lot of places try to serve but fail at miserably. They are crispy AND fluffy! Yum! My scrambled eggs were not at all greasy or oily. My iced tea was delicious and refreshing. My lovely wife had the chorizo hash, which I tried. Oh, my. So good. And the chipotle crema on top was just perfect. They have excellent diner coffee here as well. My service experience was immaculate the first time and just OK today. He was fine initially, but I feel like he kind of forgot about us after he checked on our food. We were stuck way in the back. Maybe he was on a break, which is fine. I spent time as a waiter in two different restaurants, so I'm sympathetic, but I did not get a drink refill, and I wanted one pretty badly. We got the four egg omelette with peppers, onions, spinach, and cheddar as well as the corned beef hash, coffee, and OJ. GREAT classic breakfast spot, the corned beef hash had large pieces of meat. My sisters and I came here for brunch on a special day, yesterday. One of my sisters and I wear the hijab, and we arrived first and got a table. The woman server was cold, short with us, and made us feel like we were a burden when we walked in. I felt so uncomfortable waiting, and felt so unwelcome. Later my sisters, who don't wear hijab, walked in. They were greeted with warmth, their children with kindness, and were offered coloring books and crayons for them to play with. The child I walked in with was not given anything until she saw the other children. It was pretty stark, the contrast between how I was treated and my sisters. I told them and they had been there before and loved it. They were shocked and wished I told them so we could go somewhere else. I wished I had said something as well. I haven't felt that blatant of Islamophobia in a while, and it was sad to experience that while eating out with family. read more

The home fries were perfectly crispy, the pork belly bacon was thick and well done. There are about a dozen tables. It's a wide open room, basic diner look, some wall hangings that had their name printed. The service was quick and efficient. This place was really great! A friend of mine got the corned beef hash which you let me try and the corn beef was amazing as they do it in House. The home fries or potatoes or the star of the show on both this and the breakfast sandwich that my other friend got. These potatoes were deep-fried super crispy on the outside and tender and perfect on the inside. I probably would go to this restaurant for these fried potatoes alone! I got the corn beef for egg omelette with a side of chimichurri aïoli. I honestly liked the corned beef hash that my friend let me try better even though I had corn beef in my omelette. It just seemed a little bit, not as tender in the omelette And the omelette lacked flavor, but I did use their ketchup, salt and pepper. I believe their ketchup was homemade. I have been to Scratch a couple different times and I really do love having such a nice breakfast spot nearby that offers unique menu items and is filled with friendly people! If I could do half stars this place would for sure be a 4.5/5 stars. The food here is always nice and hot and very large portion sizes. their home fries are big chunks of crispy potatoes, and I LOVE THEM. I love that their menu has traditional and non-traditional breakfast items. It is a bit pricy but you definitely get a lot of food, the compassion burrito is MASSIVE. All the food was delish, I wish the pork belly was not so hard it was a bit too crispy but good flavor. I love that their ketchup and hot sauce is homemade, the verde sauce is definitely my favorite. The place is small so just expect a wait as they get busy, and it can get pretty loud in there with it being tiny. The workers are always very very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu which is helpful. Definitely drop in this place and give it a go, they have some awesome flavors and sweet and savory options, so you are sure to find something you like. I definitely recommend the chorizo hash, it is my favorite for sure and best flavor out of a dish I have had there but it is a bit spicy! read more

Hidden gem brunch spot in Independence. Interior is a bit small but we were able to get a table with a 15 minute wait. They text you when a table is ready so you can walk around the area while you wait. The interior is modern farmhouse style decor and, as a bonus, there's a chalkboard with chalk you can draw on! The food was INCREDIBLE, save for the fact they don't offer poached eggs. But their over easy eggs were perfect, and the bread pudding French toast was a unique and delightful addition to breakfast. We stopped in on a Friday around noon on our way to Cleveland. I knew I was in for a great meal as soon as I walked in. Friendly hardworking staff, patrons that seem like regulars, and an open kitchen. I ordered the chicken tacos and wife ordered the steak and egg bagel (she loved it). I can't describe how good those tacos were. To be honest I was a little skeptical when they were 15 dollars. They were worth every penny. My friend and I visited this restaurant on a busy Saturday late morning. There were people standing outside waiting for a table so I was somewhat concerned that we would not get to eat there. It was 11:30 in the morning and I was placed on a waiting list and told that it was about a 30 minute wait. The wait was a little more than 30 minutes, but it was worth it. It was a nice end of Summer day and we walked around a bit and came back just before we were seated. our server was a young man named Joey, who took excellent care of us. Coffee and water glasses were always full. He answered questions about the menu that helped us to make decisions. I had a very basic breakfast of two eggs, sausage, potatoes, and toast. Everything was cooked to perfection. The sausage I am told is made in house and it was so well seasoned and tasty! My friend had a dish that was basically corn beef hash. The corn beef was incredibly large slices. She enjoyed it very much. We also had a plate of French toast with bananas and a maple cream that was outstanding. I will definitely go back. The menu is somewhat limited for lunch offerings but the breakfast food all looks interesting. Prices were good as I believe I spent $14 for my eggs and toast. It is a very small restaurant as I wouldn't estimate that there were more than 12 tables. I will try it again on a weekday to see if there's any difference in wait time. Are there at Noon on a Thursday and it was packed. And noisy! So it you enjoy being in a lively place, this is your spot. I do wonder if the 1:30p close keeps folks away. Even an extra half hour might be helpful. I was curious to see how a lunch item would taste, since they clearly focus on breakfast. My salad was SO full of flavor! Yum. Wish it were possible to leave 6 stars... Last month I stopped in with my wife to try Scratch based on reviews and photos. I periodically go to Cleveland for medical care and it was just a 20 minute drive from my hotel. Had a great breakfast and the waitress Jen was amazing. Not a huge menu, but it's a bit unique. I had the Not your ordinary Corned Beef Hash from the Savory side of the menu, and my wife had the Bananas and Bourbon French Toast from the sweet side. Both were exceptional. Had to return back up for a follow-up this week and on the way home stopped in again. Jen recognized us, welcomed us back... and after taking our order she asked if I wanted a side of mushrooms this time too. Great memory . I of course did, and we had another perfect experience even though this time we tried the Blueberry Moonshine French Toast, and split a Blackberry Waffle which was also incredible. Never judge a restaurant based on size alone. These folks care, and it's well worth a drive across Cleveland to give them a try. You will be glad you did read more

One of my favorite brunch spots, very easy to miss when you drive by on a busy street. But consumers here know what a gem of a place this is. It's always packed when I'm here and for good reason. On a Saturday morning had a brief wait for a table of one. They have (3) two seat tables, (3) four seat tables, (2) four seat high tops, and (1) table for six. Service was good and the server approached me right after being seated. Room is a little loud with the acoustics. It looks like a big chalk board maybe for bored children? I like the menu and ordered the B&G with two sunny side up eggs. Coffee was nothing special. Eggs were cooked perfectly. Potato's we're large chucks of baked potatoes but crispy. Biscuits were soft and fluffy and the gravy was full of flavor. They add a layer of a semi spicy sausage patty in between the biscuit and gravy which really paired well. I have not had the version of the sausage patty before and it was vey good. They also offer a green hot sauce which is a weak spot for me. It works with this dish! When a traditional biscuits and gravy plate is ordered, at this point (picture of half eaten) you would be done. NOT here! The potatoes are larger chucks of baked potatoes but crispy all around and the biscuit is halved with a semi spicy sausage patty layer between the two halves and topped with an excellent tasting gravy.
