When I am looking for a quick and delicious breakfast or treat, I always head to Scottish Bakehouse. This cute little bakehouse off of State Road houses probably my favorite breakfast burrito in the world. Their baked goods are also amazing and it is never really super crowded. The food is decent to good. Bakery offerings are varied and interesting. However the counter staff are incredibly douchey and self-involved. Note, that for the pleasure of their company they have pre-programmed check out so that you are paying them a 15% tip. In fact, by the time you leave, you will want them to pay you for the discomfort and annoyance of having to deal with their immature personalities. Be prepared to have trend-guppy baristas look down their noses is at you while grudgingly answering questions and laconically attending to orders between checking their cell phones. Managment is not being done a service by these folks. I'd recommend some customer service training so that the bad attitudes don't spoil the good food. read more

After a week on the island, this was one of our favorites. I kept getting the shortbread as a post-meal treat. Any of their more traditional Scottish baked goods are a win (shortbread, scones, the congo bar). The beau and I *loved* the meatloaf sandwich (got it a second time). The Scottish Bakehouse is an island land mark, and is vastly improved since the days of the former owners when delicate clumps of light green mold grew on just about every little treat I ever bought there. They've kept the name but have totally changed the menu and the entire feel of the place. Their baked goods are seriously the best on the island. Nothing can compare. (Please do not go to The Black Dog for your pastries.) Everything is moist and rich, oozing with delicious flavor. Lots of gluten free items. I usually do not get any of the pre-made salads in the case as I find them very bland. I order a hot meal to go or some sweet treats. It's a small spot off the beaten path- you need a car or bike to get there- and if you want to eat there, it's a bit challenging. They do have quite a few picnic benches outside, along with a little front porch. People can get a little tense in the parking area during the summer, but that's the Vineyard in the summer- sometimes it's just tense when people can't get what they want right away. They always have local art work on the walls and the staff is friendly unless it's mid-summer, when they can get annoyed with the crowd. But in a way, who can blame them? Wish they had a better seating area and wish their pre-made take out section was better. But I love The Scottish Bakehouse and always drop in when I pass by. read more

Thought I should give a proper nod to their bread - I like buying a loaf and having them slice it for me - mad tasty varieties like raisin and fennel, or whole wheat, molasses, and cornmeal (WHAT - tasty). BIG UPS to the snickerdoodles. Also I appreciate that the service is friendly. read more

If a breakfast sandwich takes 45 min to make, is it still even breakfast? I'm alright with paying $1 extra for the local egg and $3 extra for the local sausage just for the conversation on is the pig local or is it cased local or will we ever know. Can I pay $5 extra for a rush order or just so I get my to-go breakfast sandwich in 10 min because why not. I'm on vacation and would rather support the local economy than get mad that this is clearly a problem per other yelp reviews and steps haven't been taken to fix it. I will say this: Scottish Bakehouse makes the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. Get the works, get it with your choice of meat, and you will be satisfied and happy and never the same. The ingredients are all fresh and local, which (especially on an island) makes a huge difference. The Bakehouse itself is a small shack perched up in the woods, and there isn't much seating but there's a nice porch and a few high-tops inside. The case full of amazing baked goods takes up most of the room - key lime tarts, flourless chocolate cakes, scones, pies, and freshly-baked breads line the shelves and tempt the tastebuds. Their sandwiches and hot breakfast items are listed on chalkboards behind the counter, and you can tak eour time and really decide what you're in the mood for. The staff is friendly, and will usually let you have a taste of something if you're unsure. For example, I was curious about the Fakin' Bacon for my breakfast sandwich. It turned out to be nothing like bacon, but still very delicious -a sort of compressed lentil mash that was smoked and the perfect accompaniment to all those veggies and eggs. I went here based on yelp. We all must hVe ordered the wrong things because I thought it was WAY overpriced (on an island where everything is overpriced) and not that good. Two years ago, we conducted a test. We bought strawberry rhubarb pies from four differ net bakeries on the island. In the past, the Scottish Bakehouse was a standard -- a part of my Vineyard experience. That was when Scottish people owned it, I think. It's all different now. TSBH pie came in last in a blind taste test. The crust was flavorless and the filling sour. Compared with the likes of the Black Dog, which had a sugary, plush top crust and a chunky fruity center, TSBH just does not compare. read more

Stay away unless you want to spend your day there! Doesn't even deserve a star. I cannot comment on the food because after 1 hour waiting for 5 sandwiches we requested a refund. To compound matters, there was almost nobody there when we first placed our order and everyone that came in after us got there food. The excuses from the pimple faced manager were absurd: "you had a big order", we have a small kitchen".... I could write a novel about how bad the experience was. They don't seem to care. The menu is really versatile and they were very accommodating and knowledgable about allergies to dairy. I got the coconut tofu and it was amazing. I've never had anything like it before. They took coconut flakes and encrusted tofu with it and then lightly pan fried it! Fabulous. They have AMAZING desserts for all types of food allergy and non, as well as quick to go items like organic marinated asparagus salad, edamame salad, hummus, etc....all really good stuff. Their fresh bakes loaves of bread looked amazing too. If I lived on the Island, this would be one of my go to places, for sure! BTW: It's all take out. The food is good, overpriced but at least good. The customer service, on the other hand, is so bad. I waited nearly an hour for my order, which was 4 entrees - doesn't seem too terribly big to warrant that kind of insane wait. There was no real apology or acknowledgment of how long it was taking, just a few expected excuses. Also - the (very nice I must say) gal who took my order didn't know how a dish was prepared and didn't seem to have the desire to find out. Great bakery and cafe! I just had a great coconut tofu platter with perfectly cooked rice and Brussels sprouts. Hubby had the burger, which he said is the best he's had in a while. Juicy, flavorful, and served between homemade bread. Coffee is strong. Baked products are super tasty. We've had the Congo bar, the chocolate croissant, and the paleo goodness bar. Front counter people are great. We waited a little long for our food and they gave us a bottle of fizz on the house for being patient and stuff. This is a great place to eat on the island! read more

I love the Scottish Bakehouse. It was recommended by a local as a go-to-4-breakfast place. Revisiting MV we took the red eye ferry and rushed to have breakfast here. We were hoping they would have Bridies since it is called the Scottish Bakehouse. A bit disappointing but we ordered the Meatloaf, rice, beans and kale dish and it was amazing (enough to share for two people). If you're vacationing on the Vineyard definitely check out this spot. It's out of the way from the touristy towns but worth it if you are disappointed by the touristy food options. read more

We have been fans of the Scottish Bakehouse for years but this year things have gone downhill. For example, a couple of days ago I ordered a stir fry. Not only was it overcooked but it tasted like they just through the ingredients together without any attention to how it would taste. There was way too much soy sauce and seemed to be no other spicing. The overall impression was that the food was just slapped together. We got a pie a few days before that and it was quite tasty, although the bottom crust was under cooked and mushy. One bad dish can happen anywhere but this summer the Scottish Bakehouse seems to be resting on their laurels and not paying a lot of attention to their products. read more

I absolutely love this little bakery. You can find just about anything to satisfy your cravings--sweet, savory, full of gluten or gluten free. The gluten free brownies are amazing. I usually pop by here and grab a breakfast sandwich and coffee before leaving to catch the ferry. Their sandwiches are huge and made-to-order and the coffee is rich and bold (just how I like it). After coming to the Vineyard for many years, you learn which merchants appreciate the revenue and patronage from their customers (i.e tourists, like me) and which ones don't. There are so many great businesses on The Vineyard, who make you feel welcomed and appreciated - the Scottish Bakehouse is not one of them. After waiting an hour for our order, we decided to leave, I asked for a refund and was told "I'll refund you for your food, but you have to pay for the coffee you drank" WOW - make me wait an hour for three sandwiches, and then not be willing to absorb the cost of my coffee, after wasting an hour of my time. Does that make me feel like they were sorry for the inconvenience or want me to come back another time? Not at all - SO I won't be back. Too bad, there food is good, but I won't give my $$$ to people who don't treat me with respect. There is an air of arrogance and no-caring at the Scottish Bakehouse, which is very Non-Vineyard. The Bakehouse is the best! We visit regularly and love their use of online ordering. (Pro tip: use it!!! It's free and really efficient!) We also used the Bakehouse as our wedding caterer. Erica, Danielle and team are amazing. We found them to be very competitive on cost and very mindful of budget. We didn't have to sacrifice on quality either. The staff is so rude here. I understand it can be difficult to deal with annoying customers continuously but chose a different job if this is not your thing. I asked one of the girl very politely at the counter how much longer the quesadilla I ordered would take. It had already been 20 minutes and she rolled her eyes and proceeded to tell me it would be another 15-20 minutes. I couldn't understand why it would take that long to make a quesadilla. Point is if you want to wait 35 minutes for a quesadilla and have pushy, unfriendly employees taking your order come here. read more

I was so excited to see this bakery as we drove around MV. Being an expat Scot living in the US, I thought I would get a wee treat. Scottish bakery is a misnomer. There is nothing Scottish about this bakery, except for the flag outside. However, there was one Scottish treat on the menu - sausage rolls! My cousin from Scotland was with me, and we were salivating at the thought of some homemade Scottish fare. We ordered 3 sausage rolls and a cheese and ham croissant (there were 4 of us). The girl wrapped them in foil and took them to heat up. When we were served them, we were disappointed to find them frozen cold. When I asked if they could be reheated, the young woman that served me, very condescendingly, took them to reheat. They were still cold when we got them back. We took a couple of bites and threw them away. Serving partially heated food can cause food borne pathogens that cause illness. I got sick, my cousin got sick, and we spent a couple of miserable days while on vacation. Scottish Bakery - up your game. Serving partially heated food is dangerous. I'm giving you 1 star because I don't have the option of giving you no stars. read more

I have never been treated so badly at a restaurant in my entire life and will never go back here again.  This is a shame because their food is actually good.  I arrived to pick up my food which I had ordered online about a half hour before I got to the restaurant.  Despite arriving at the time my confirmation email said the food would be ready they said it would take twenty more minutes until it was finished.  Twenty minutes later they said it was almost ready.  And yet we continued to wait.  It wasn't until we were the last people in the whole restaurant that they informed us they had not done our order, and were not going to do it.  This is simply not how a restaurant should be run, and is incredibly disrespectful.  This experience has truly left me at a loss as to how people could be this unprofessional, and I honestly hope this restaurant either gets shut down or learns to treat its customers with respect.  I would rather eat bad food at any other vineyard establishment than ever come here again. read more
