Why 4 stars? Because this was a nice spot for a post-dinner treat. --- --- --- After grabbing dinner down the street, we were in the mood to finish off with something sweet, so we headed to Scoop's. While I planned on grabbing ice cream, I noticed a shaved ice machine and quickly made my decision to go that route. Frozen sugar is my kryptonite. It was a fairly average snow cone, but for me, snow cones are graded on a curve because I love them so much. Everyone we were with seemed to be happy with their treats, as well. It's funny to see some of the photos of this place, because it looks like they do have non-desserts... I mean, it's called "Scoop's SOUPS & More." But after my experience, I would have thought that this was nothing more than a dessert place. Apparently I was so blinded by the sweets that I didn't even notice other options. Not that I would have gone for something hearty after just eating dinner, but just an observation that it might not be that obvious for those seeking non-sugary nutrition. This review purely reflects the customer service as we did not stay for ice cream. (Because we were told not to). Our daughter has a nut allergy so we asked if they could please grab a fresh carton of strawberry ice cream for her since the scoops are used in all the flavors and can cross contaminate. The employee (a young man with hair hanging down from his hat) told us no "because, like, it's inconvenient ". I told him we have never had a problem with other ice cream shops and it was strange he was unwilling. He did not care. So we left. If your looking for fresh ice cream this is a good spot. They also serve other dessert items like shaved ice, brownies, danishes, etc, and drinks. I got the shaved ice and it was good, the amount of ice and flavoring wasn't plentiful like other places. The staff were nice and the place was pretty calm for a Sunday afternoon. The reason for giving it a 1 star is due to rudeness. The lady running it was making huffing sounds after every thing I was ordering. We only went in for ice cream. We asked for certain menu specials and she in a rude sarcastic voice said well we don't have it and then the next item don't have it either. I have heard a lot of good things about this place and I have to say I am a little disappointed. They sell Fresno state ice cream which is fine, nothing special and they have a fun to look at place, but overall not great. The prices are on the high to very high side, the staff are ho hum, and the portions are extremely small. I really don't see how this place is distinguishing itself from even thifty ice cream. Too bad things have changed lately. We have been loyal customers for a while now but as racism has worsened in old town Clovis this little shop makes me question them now as well. Just stopped by to enjoy the most delicious shaved ice I've had in Fresno. A couple went in ahead of us with their infant . Two employees behind the counter waiting for this couples undecided order. One with a scoop ready in his hand and the other one leaning against the counter . He looks over at us but stays with his arms folded. just looking over at the other couple. Why? Because we're black? This went on for good two minutes. Did not offer to take our order. So we just left. Very disappointed. read more

The Ice cream is good. Very over priced. The woman with red hair was decent but snapped at a younger guy scooping my 2 scoop medium cup with "too much ice cream" which I thought was a bit stingy considering he didn't even put that much. So he scooped some out and then put the other scoop I wanted next to it. Kind of disappointed since I'm already being charged 50 cents extra because my card was being charged under $10 (which seems fishy and I'll be looking into that with the card company) on top of my $5.50 charge for 2 scoops of ice cream. Which is sad but whatever I guess. Point is good ice cream but not worth the hassle. Would rather take my business to rite aid for better prices and better ice cream. read more

The ice cream deserves 5 Stars as they serve Fresno State ice cream. Ice Cream is fantastic. The place has a 50's feel, however, I do not think it has been cleaned since the fifties. Sitting trying to enjoy my ice cream and you start to notice a lot of things. Exhaust grills on the white freezers that are black due to lack of cleaning. Glass in the freezer cases are spotty due to lack of cleaning. Not to mention the duck tape that has been used to cover some type of hole or crack in the glass. Some of the art decor on the walls has probably never been cleaned. Base boards around the freezer cases, same problem. With a good day of elbow grease this place could be OK. FYI - while they do accept credit cards there is a 50 cent surcharge for the use of a credit card. read more

They do not have flavored soda water though. 2 stars because front door is left open which is against Heath Department rules and they also are charging the wrong California sales tax rate. It was pouring rain and soup sounded really good. To be fair, this may be a great ice cream shop during our hot Summer weather, I couldn't say one way or the other. But if "Soup" is in the name of your business, you should probably offer more than 2 choices of soup. I had the Chicken Dumpling and my wife had the Minestrone. Mine was fine but her's was cold and had very little flavor. We also ordered a beer rock each and was charged for them only to be told after we had our soups for several minutes that they had just realized that they were out of the beer rocks. The guy who helped us was polite but both he and the girl that were working there (especially her) seemed depressed which didn't help the gloomy atmosphere at all (and no, it wasn't just because it was raining outside). What a shame because this place has a lot of potential and could be awesome (and not just as a Summer ice cream parlor). If they'd ditch the crappy mostly microwavable menu, offered more soups (it is a part of their freaking name for goodness sakes) and chili with a daily special soup and fresh made sandwiches, cleaned up the place and added a better 50's decor than what they have in there now (lots of hand drawn stuff and newspaper style cartoons mixed in with some old 50's memorabilia...it seems like they don't know what they want the place to be the way that it is now) and if they gave their staff reason to have fun (or at least pretend like they don't hate being there), it could be a great little spot. I felt like I traveled to the 1950s here and I loved it. It was decorated for valentines day when me and the boyfriend went in to enjoy some ice cream. THere was a lot of the older generation enjoying their desserts which I absolutely adored! All the ice cream there was made at Fresno State. I hate to give a bad rating but this place was disappointing. I went in at 1:45 (after the lunch rush or so I thought). There was only one employee working. At first I was one of the few patrons but it quickly became crowded, which I thought was a good sign. The employee was (understandably) overwhelmed with the crowd and the phone ringing. She took my order (a large coke and beirot(sp?)) She filled the cup to the rim with ice. When I asked her to only fill it halfway with ice, she was obviously perturbed. She did as I asked but then only filled the cup 3/4 full with soda. The rest of the meal was brought out after several minutes but it wasn't worth a trip back, ever. I felt sorry for this employee. The 50's Americana decor is pure schmaltz (what'd you expect?) and a bit too cutesy for its own good, but it leaves no doubt about its identity as a place to satisfy a sweet tooth. The Fresno State ice cream doesn't hurt either. My only criticism: despite all that it has going for it, I never feel like I NEED to return. Great ice cream selections. They have two large ice cream freezers of flavors to select from with an evenish-split between Fresno State ice cream flavors and Dreyers. Small scoop $3.50, Medium scoop (can get 2 flavors) for $4.50. I had the Fresno State Pistachio Nut ice cream on a cake cone, small scoop. A nice light green color, not too artificial looking, and a lot of pistachios packed in. Very delicious. read more

Had ice cream here a handful of times, usually because I'm in the area and have a hankering for something cold and creamy. I particularly don't love the Fresno State ice creams. They are okay. I find them lacking in flavor. It's like they are trying to be that flavor, but don't quite hit the mark. On my most recent trip to Scoups I had the Moose Tracks. I don't think it was a Fresno State ice cream as the label did not indicate so. I didn't finish the ice cream as it tasted like it had been in a freezer for a very long time, like the vanilla base had picked up other flavors. It was not very good. I ate a small amount and threw it away. It's very rare that I don't finish an ice cream. Sorry Scoups. :-( read more

I've stopped in here for ice cream during Glorious Junk Days and Big Hat Days. The Fresno State Ice Cream is amazing. I've had the coconut almond chip, root beer float, and peach ice cream flavors. The ice creams taste so fresh and the texture is so creamy. The flavors that I have tried have been delicious, but the coconut almond chip is absolutely incredible. Service has been very friendly. I am looking forward to coming again and trying more flavors. read more

Stopped in on a Thursday night at 8pm. All of the chairs where already placed upside down on the tables. The only way we knew it was still open was due to the large neon sign above the door. When we walked in, we were never greeted and the staff acted as if it was a pain to serve us. The ice cream is wonderful but is too expensive for what you get. I had to use my debit card to pay and was notified that they charge an extra 50 cents to use your debit card when the total is under $10. Really? No one charges to use the debit card any longer, but with the prices being as high as they were, I guess they do not have many patrons who spend less than $10. To top it all off, the cashier kept acting weird with my debit card. It made me very uncomfortable and now I will be watching more closely what is going on with my card. While I love to buy local, I can tell you that I will NOT return to Scoop's Soups & More ever again. If you are in the area and want ice cream, I suggest going somewhere else. read more

This is my favorite place to take my kids! It is so cute inside and the staff is always so lovely to speak with. I would highly suggest coming here. They sell Fresno State ice cream, so you already know the ice cream is delicious. Even when you order a single scoop they definitely overload you with ice cream! While the ice cream is great, I always order sandwiches for my kids and I as well. While there is nothing fancy about these sandwiches, they are still so tasty! I recommend the chicken salad. Everything I've ever had from this local business in The heart of Clovis has been amazing!! My favorite, chocolate covered banana! And for the price, you can't beat it! I love taking my kids here.
