SCOOPS!! Is the best place for ice cream in Bloomfield. They have a TON of flavors to choose from. My personal favorite is birthday cake. I went there a couple days ago and they were out of Birthday cake, so I tried red velvet, and it was just as good! They make their own waffle cones too which are delicious. For the first few months of my arrival to Pittsburgh I decided to try a different ice cream shop as a Sunday treat until I discovered Scoops and since then I haven't been able to go elsewhere. This ice cream is by far the best I've had in Pittsburgh. Each ice cream has chunky, flavorful bits, well distributed throughout, making every bite delectable. I'm a huge ice cream fiend and went to the Ben and Jerry's factory in Vermont one year to tour their store. Interesting story that one of the co founders (either Ben or Jerry) had a diminished sense of taste and was unable to fully appreciate the flavor of ice cream they were making, and so he asked for bigger chunks. I'm not much of an ice cream connoisseur. In fact I rarely eat it. First job was at a Dairy Queen, ruined it for me. That said the Ice Cream at Scoops in Bloomfield was exceptional. It was very rich and creamy the way an ultra-premium ice cream should be. The sugar cone was crisp and stayed that way until I had finished it. I only got salted caramel even though that is the trendy flavor of the moment. It was very good with abundant swirls of caramel and whole pieces of chocolate/caramel candies. I didn't really taste much of the "salt" though. All said, I may need to change my opinion on ice cream with this local establishment a short walk away. read more

This is my go to place for ice cream cakes! They have a bunch of different sizes, from petit cakes that serve maybe 4 people to the large round cakes that serve 15+, and a bunch of sheet cake sizes in between. The decorations are well done and they always have a good variety in stock, and the prices are very reasonable. I think the quality of cake/ice cream is just as good as coldstones, although the flavors they keep in stock might not be as exotic. There is usually the same guy working there, and he's really nice. The place is clean and the flavors are good. They usually have about 30. They carry Hershey's ice cream, which is pretty good, not the the best but certainly not the worst. The one thing I can say is they have quite a few flavors to choose from. Also available are ice cream sodas and floats, milk shakes, and sundaes (with your choice of toppings - hot fudge sauce, strawberry topping, hot caramel, chocolate syrup, pineapples and crushed peanuts - and your choice of any ice cream). My husband and I split the brownie a la mode sundae with 2 scoops of spumoni ice cream, and hot fudge sauce and strawberry topping. It was really good, and more than enough to split between the two of us. They have a little table outside with 2 chairs and a couple of barstools and a bench inside. The store was bright, and clean. So look, Im gonna come right out and say this. Ive been giving Scoops in Bloomfield my money for 4 years. Make no mistake, I go there, often and in a big way. Options are scant in the neighborhood, and sometimes, I can't bring myself to walk all the way to Twisters when I know without a doubt that its the right thing to do. Kind of like sweet treat Stockholm syndrome every time I walk by. Now let me be clear, the ice cream; its just fine. Standard Hersheys and Perrys. Not great, not bad. However.... and this is a big however. The place is called Scoops... this is where the problem arises. Because the scoops to which they are referring, must be the ones that were withheld from my many cones over the years. Im not sure if there is a secret password required to get a proper serving of ice cream here, but I know handing them my hard earned cash is certainly not it. Now, Im not a huge ice cream eater, so typically, I only want a taste... This leads me to order a "Single Scoop" in a cake cone most (every) time I visit. That said, this single scoop is literally no more than the *tiny* amount of ice cream that fits in to their tiny ice cream scooper. I have visited ice cream shops far and wide, and nowhere have I seen the ice cream not be vigorously scooped up to fill the cone, and protrude like a picturesque ice cream masterpiece. Now Ive been eating ice cream for about 30 years, and Im no professional, however Im pretty sure when you order a single scoop that isn't meant to be represented by a single tiny scoop balancing precariously atop a completely empty cone. But hey, what do I know? Anyhow on several occasions I have ordered the "Junior Scoop" just to test my theory that this is the same exact sized scoop you get when you order a "Single Scoop". Its not my imagination. And for $2.85 a tiny blob of ice cream levitating over a hollow cone just doesn't cut the mustard. There is one employee in particular who is guilty of this heinous act every, single, time. I think he might be the manager, because he's there about 90+ hours a week. Is this the owner? Because he treats each scoop of ice cream as if it is made of solid gold. I have experimented with the "Two Scoops" option, and to my disappointment, its just two micro scoops as featured in the "Single Scoop" variant. Sad. Look, Im not a bad guy, Im just a guy who wants what I pay for, and I want everyone to know that if you visit this establishment for desperation ice cream much like I do, do your best to peek inside the window before walking in and handing them your cash. The stingy scooper wears glasses, has a beard, and sometimes wears a hat. If any of the nice young ladies who work there are present, your chances are of a normal scoop are not promised, but are statistically much greater. You could always just keep on walking down to Sunoco and get yourself a vanilla King Cone from the freezer, right next to the Totinos Pizza Rolls, for a smoking low price of $1.85 (and it even comes with fudge in the bottom and peanuts on top). read more
