Color me unimpressed with Scola's, and it's a shame because it's the closest Italian restaurant to our house. The food was bland and uninteresting, and it was packed on a Saturday night to the point of unpleasantness. Someone's chair kept whacking the back of my chair, and it was so loud that I could hardly hear my boyfriend from across the table. Menu is too big like the former owners and frequently they are out of something you want. Generally good but bar area is real small and not the best place to watch a game. No draft beer. have the pleasure of experiencing scola's for at least 8 years now. Alwasys great food, large portions, always leave with left overs. Prices are very reasonable and the menu is extensive, and the special are rotated alot. It's alwasy clean in there, and the wait staff have been consistenly attentive and pleasant. Some of my favorites, Haddock Margherita, Marco Pollo, Chix Parm, marsala, appetizers, i had a great asiago shirmp and crostini. They also do a great job on martinis! They have live entertainment on weekends and have a private back room. We have also used them for catereing and they had our food nicely presented on platters ready to serve. I have also ordered take out, and have gotten there family style trays which feed our family of four and have 2 extra servings of leftovers. One and only flaw, i have ordered take out before the containers they use weren't deep enough to prevent some leaking, but if you have a saucy dish just ask them to wrap it in cellophane. During a recent and extremely tragic death of a family member, we asked Scola's for pick-up catering and they went above and beyond to ensure our family had what we needed and more. They worked within the budget we had and provided a great variety in the food. The food all tasted delicious (from cheese & crackers, fruit, salad, bread, finger sandwiches, and full-on hot entrees: meatballs, chicken parm, sausage and peppers, multiple zitis, roasted potatoes, veggies, etc.) and stayed fresh and hot all night in the warming coolers that the owner, Tony offered to leave behind until we were done. Knowing it was going to be a large event and that there was so much to do, the owner also offered to deliver the food several towns over, easing our minds further. They took care of all our food needs and it was so appreciated. I would recommend Scola's for any catering or in general - they have an amazing personal touch and it was felt in the love put into the food. read more

The food is great, the portions are large and the prices are reasonable. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Over the years I have had dinner, the lunch buffet and their dinner for two offering. Every dinning experience was wonderful. You can enjoy a delicious dinner, and if you don't have a large appetite, you can take leftovers home. It is not a fancy restaurant. It is a great place to go when you want a relaxing, enjoyable experience. They also have a private dinning room. read more

Terrible experience.. Had a party of 10 to order pizzas at 3:30 and were told the ovens don't get turned on until 5 and they take an hour to heat up, so pizza was only available after 6. This was not stated in the menu. Many of the items on the menu were unavailable or were available if prepared only one way- couldn't order gnocchi with sauce, had to have it with lobster only, both choices were on menu. I have to admit I'm not a big fan of doing reviews but this place really was incredible. My wife had heard great things and wanted to go here for our anniversary although I may have wanted somewhere else at the time lol. The service and food really was incredible. It seemed like every step of the way the staff tried to make it a memorable experience.The owner, I think his name was Tony, made a point of coming over and bringing us a glass of champagne and making sure the night was special. My wife got the chicken broccoli ziti and now she's addicted and I got the prime rib. It's tough to find a good prime rib and scratch kitchen these days but this place seemed to have it down. I was expecting so much more from this place. Friend recommended it to me... We came there on Friday night. We had reservations and was seated right a way. Interior is just blah, outdated and "dusty". I order melon margarita- it came without salt, and did not taste like margarita at all, glass was half full and drink was too strong. I asked waiter to do something with it, and she brought me back tasteless, "waterdown" substance- very disappointing. Then we wanted to ordered scallops wrapped in bacon- they were "out of it". We wanted do order their supreme lobster- they are out of lobsters too! Really? At 7.30 pm on Friday night you are out of your most popular dish? Service was lousy, we wait too long for our food, and forever for our check and even longer to get the card back. The food is no good either- to much crumbs on everything, fried items are greasy, staffed mushrooms are tasteless with too much bread staffing and nothing else on them. I got seafood pie - blend, and too much crumbs again!! The best thing on the menu seems to be lobster roll and their bread with deeping oil. Eek! is right. Beware. Do not purchase the groupon!. I have been here. Very poor service unless they know you. People who arrive 20 min after you do have drinks and food before you are waited on. Food is only fair! Drinks arrived as we finished eating...decided to give second chance. Bought groupon. Paid $25 for groupon, value $50. It expired...still worth $25 pd! SUPPOSEDLY! They refused to accept. Groupon told me sCOLAS out of contract.Scola's has another available now...Groupon told me to add myself and them to class action law suit which I did. Went there Friday night and the service was very poor. Drinks took about 20 minuets and it was just a beer and a margarita. First drink had a bug in it, sent it back, almost 10 mins later next one has the same thing. People that came in after us were served and done their meal before we even got ours, including a large group of kids. The food was a little better, scallops in bacon were great, meal was so so, had pork and peppers, left a funny aftertaste. I have gone here for years but I think that will be my last. read more

To start, there were five of us and we were seated at a table meant for four people when there was a larger table right next to us. We also had to wait for that table when there were plenty other tables open. I ordered a pizza, I was informed that they only had pizza on Fridays even though it was on the normal menu. Disappointed I ordered the salmon. It was so dry and rubbery I had to send it back. It was the last piece so they couldn't make a new one. No one was really impressed with their meal. I hadn't been here for a long time,so I was excited to go back. I'm sorry to say I was very disappointed. The service was inattentive even though it was a very slow night. I should've known we were in trouble when the hostess dropped out menus on the table and walked away without saying a word. We ordered veal parm and gnocchi Juliana. The veal was overdone and the gnocchi was gummy and not what the menu indicated. On the menu, the gnocchi is stated as being served in a brandy Marsala sauce with a touch if marinara , but it was actually all marinara, which was awful. My husband and I went there and the food was awful. He got sick immediately. We had our 8 month old granddaughter with us and there was no changing station in the bathroom. I asked if there was anywhere I could change her and the owner said no. It was 18 degrees outside and I had to change her in my car. Would NOT recommend going here if you have young children. Scola's has a large area for seating. Why on a Wednesday night would they only seat people in the bar area and not the other areas? a 25 minute wait to seat a party of 4 at 6:45 pm? Not only was the wait excessive to be seated, but the service was sloooow, food was slow to come out, no continuity, it was just a huge disappointment, especially when we thought we were taking family members to a nice place. We have dined here many times, I don't know what has happened since our last visit, but this was our last visit. Hello Tuscan Kitchen! Good food can't offset poor service and a ruined experience. This place is the best! Great atmosphere includes murals on the walls, fun Italian music and a great staff! I had the Chikcen parm, grilled chicken not fried on request and suggested by the hostess, it was AWESOME! And it was the grilled chicken that really made the difference (thank you hostess!!!). The pasta and red sauce are as good as it gets! The bread silky smooth with a chewy crust, just the way we all like it. Lammypie below my review must have gone in with bad karma or is lying (i bet the latter). They have Sunday 2 for 1 specials with great and many selections, the menu is huge HUGE, almost too big but reading all the perfect meals makes a good read and even tougher choice. There is a bar / lounge area on one side of the building and 2 dining rooms on the other side. Small? Plenty big. Even a take out / dessert counter! Don't change a thing Scola's!!! Just ordered a mess load of food from Scolas including the Linguine di scola.This includes linguine ,chicken parm, italian sausage, and meatballs.(something that should be very safe at an "Italian Restuarant"). Well needless to say, A chainsaw would not of been overkill to cut thru the chiken parm.It was gray in the center and needed to be torn in order to try.And thats all I did was try it and then it went right in the trash (past the dog dish).The rest of the dish included one 3" decent sausage ,and two swedish sized mediocre meatballs.All in all I can clearly say " NEVER AGAIN!!" read more

Very good food! Had catering from here for our company luncheon. The food was fresh and tasty. Based on the fact that they were able to deliver this kind of quality in quantity and maintain the texture and flavor of a freshly made dish, I will be visiting the restaurant soon. Bought a groupon for this restaurant to try something different. We took my 4 year old grandson with us. We went on a Tuesday. We were greeted immediately and periodically checked in during our wait for a table. Since the wait was 30 mins plus the host (who turned out to be our server as well) made up a table for us to sit at in the closed off dining room section since we had a little one and she didn't want us to wait too long (there are two sections for dining in the restaurant) This was a great start to our dining experience! The bread with dipping oil was served immediately and our drink orders were promptly filled. Our grandson was eager to place his order and our server was patient and attentive to details (including the fact our grandson graphically showed how he would "slurp" his spaghetti and meatballs - the kid's menu shows ziti and meatnalls) and sure enough a BIG kids plate of angel hair and meatballs showed up. The Rhode Island style calamari is perfection! Minimal batter, lots of rings, and plenty of peppers. I ordered the chicken Marsala and though I prefer a thicker browner sauce the flavor really hit the spot and I would certainly order it again. Not even one star. 8 of us ate there. Sat us after half hour wait in bar area. Extremely slow waitress and serving time. When I made a complaint to the waitress who was not very nice to start with she copped an attitude. Rude and unprofessional. I could not call the food cooked by any chef with any skill whatsoever. My meatballs were black and hard obviously heated and burnt then tried to cover them up with a disgustingly sugary red pasta sauce. 2 Balls and 2 sausages one of the sausages was burnt and hard half way through as well. The pasta was so saturated that it was a pasta stew like. Lasagna gross. Why is the meat sauce yellow plus a 5.00 upcharge. chicken masala gross. The bread and butter was good.A truly disgusting dining nightmare. Oh yah they charged two of us for water because they got a slice of lemon in it. WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT EAT THERE...They will not be around too much longer with this garbage....I ll be spreading the word to all my friends and anyone else I can.... read more

My brother and sister-in-law were visiting from California and were very pleased with our dinner at Scola's! The dinners for all 5 of us were served piping hot and were delicious. Scola's take-out is the best kept secret in town. We were recently looking for something different besides pizza or Chinese food for takeout and gave Scola's a try. For under $25.00 we got a huge pan of Chicken Parmesan and Ziti and a loaf of their fabulous bread. There was enough food for four starving men or six normal people. Not that the food was just inexpensive but the quality is fantastic. The breaded chicken was perfectly cooked and the sauce was delicious. For such an inexpensive meal I was surprised that they didn't skimp on quantity or quality. I've also tried dining in and was amazed at the variety. Everything we ordered was delicious and reasonably priced. Scola's hits that sweet spot where you get very high quality for low prices. Don't really understand where these bad reviews are coming from. My family used to be a huge fan of Scola's 10-15 years ago. Every Friday night we got takeout. Place was outstanding. Then the folks moved to Florida, and we had a pretty long hiatus from the restaurant. Upon returning for a visit recently, some of our family, who were diehard Scola fans, had given us cool reviews. Then there were the Yelp reviews I mentioned earlier. So we decided to check it out and decide for ourselves. Without question, Scola's remains the undisputed champion of Italian food north of Boston. Service, delivered by a waitress named "Babbs" was outstanding. She catered to our every need and had an incredibly pleasant disposition. As for the food, it was on point, the level of quality you would get in Boston's North End. Regardless of what anyone says, Scola's remains a top-tier Italian restaurant, and a favorite for myself and my family. read more

The food is outstanding and plentiful the owner and his wife are tremendously involved....our server ignored us for most of our visit. She only introduced herself after I had to get her attention and ask her name. We also had to ask for bread as well as set ups while the table next to ours with a different server those items were placed on the table as they were seated. She then only returned when the owner came by to ask how we were enjoying ourselves. Prior to being seated we observed a take out order of desert being prepared. The desert was a large portion of cake and was covered with delicious toppings. Like I said the food was outstanding and plentiful we could not finish it. Our server never asked if we would like to box it up to take it home. Again we had to ask her to get boxes which she looked as if we asked her to perform some out of the ordinary task. We both wanted desert but decided to take them to go. Imagine our disappointment when we opened our deserts later that evening and the portions were half of the take out and no toppings. This review is not to be taken as a negative on the owner or the food being served but that of our server. She could have been having an off night but that was no excuse for not introducing yourself and only showing intrest when the owner is looking at you. My husband and I have been going to Scola's for over 10 years. We have always enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. I have been very unhappy with the food and service in the past year or so. Twice, I ordered the pork tenderloin, which has been one of my favorite meals at Scola's, only to find that I had been given small, tasteless boneless pork chops, not tenderloin. I am sure that the menu still states tenderloin. Please, there is a big difference. I also find that the dishes have way too much pasta and are very bland. I have not been back or ordered since. We had just about given up on Scola's... had been fans for years and then became dissapointed as it seemed to go down hill after new ownership. But, last night we decided to give it another try and it's back on our top ten list! Our meals (prime rib, chicken florentine, and Linguine alla Pescatore) were delicious, very flavorful! Portions are huge and served promptly! A large basket of their incredible Scala bread is placed on the table as soon as you sit. They've now added a seasoned dipping oil which is tasty! For the price, it's a value that can't be beat, as at least half your meal has to go home with you. Service was great. It can feel a bit crowded, but worth it! read more

I see a lot of negative reviews here, Brought my wife here around 730 on a friday night, and we didn't have waiting problems, and the waitstaff was attentive, and good. It is a touch pricey, but I am a very frugal person, so that might be part of it... Got a prime rib, and my wife got some seafood. It was all good, and portions were large enough that we had lunch the next day. Desserts were also extremely good! All in all it was about $50 for the two of us for a dinner drinks and dessert. Live near this place and do go there. If you are in a rush do not bother the service is slow - have been there several times and each time the service has been slow. Very large portions and great bread but food was lukewarm - not the 1st time either. But you will take 1/2 the food home to enjoy again hot. Wait staff pleasant but nothing memorable. Will go back but would not have a "special dinner" there or a quick dinner - if you have a few hours to eat then got there. I went to Scola,s yesterday with my wife. Ive been here on and off over the years. The meal was the combo fried fish and scallops. The portion was good and it looked good but once you tried the scallops you had to stop chewing them... they were like they were soaked in salt for a few days.. Awful...to the point i felt sick. All the food had this salty awful taste. My wifes was the same. I didn't want to mention it to the waiter because he was such a nice guy. Now i'm afraid to go back... I couldnt get the salt taste out of my mouth for hours . Worse scallops ive had in 50 yrs plus there was an upcharge for them. Id say stick to italian food there. I'm sorry to say our last experience was not good. We went on a Friday night around 7:30. When we arrived we saw a waitress running to her car with a bag of food. Now maybe the restaurant allows staff to take food, which is fine but wouldn't you take it at the end of your shift? Seemed odd. When we went in the place was fairly full but everyone had their meals or were about to leave. We were seated right away. At this point the place really started to empty. Only a few tables of people on the bar side were left. The people behind us complained to the waitress that they were waiting over a 1/2 an hour for their food. When their food arrived it was cold. The waitress explained that she put the order in. Which I'm sure she did. She just didn't bring it out on time. The customers next to us were trying to order a side, which they were out of so they order mashed potatoes instead and ask for extra gravy. The waitress said, I will get it for you if we have it, she said she would let them know, she never did. We ordered our food. It arrived in about a 1/2 hour, not too bad. Both my wife's meal and mine were very over cooked. The meat was hard and stringy. The pasta was mushy and the sauce was pasty. We didn't say anything. The waitress disappeared for long periods of time even though there were two waitresses handling 3 to 4 tables total combined. When the bill came we were charged for an extra beer. When the waitress returned and there was no credit card, she said before us telling her "did I make a mistake" ? She knew. Since we've have had good experiences in the past we will give them one more try. Hopefully they will be better. If I had to guess I would say the owners do not work Friday nights but I could be wrong. Very disappointed. read more

Great food but horrible service. My family and I have been going to Scola's for years and the last 4 times we've been there we have had horrible service. One night we went in and ordered our favorite appetizer and we were waiting and waiting and then our entrees came out. We asked the waitress where our appetizer was and she said that she didn't think we actually wanted it. I just don't understand how you can order something and the waitress thinks you don't want it. So then we told her no we wanted it and we still do all she did was say sorry and she walked away. We still never got the appetizer even after asking for it a SECOND time. The last time we came in we asked for sour cream twice never got it, ordered 2 espressos only received one, and had to ask for the check three times. The waitress response to this was "sorry I'm new" yet we've had her twice before. This restaurant used to be great but because of such horrible service every time we go I don't know if we will ever be returning. read more

My family went to Scola's for my son's 4th birthday dinner. He actually requested Scola's as we have had great experiences with the food and restaurant in the past. Unfortunately everything about the night went bad. We waited 45 minutes before we were even served a drink. We waited 1/2 hour for bread and didn't have enough plates or place settings. The waitress messed up the order on 2 meals. One guest was served ROTTEN broccoli! Our childrens' meals did not arrive until 10 minutes after all the adult meals had been served which was over 90 minutes after our arrival!We asked to speak to the manager which took an additional 1/2 hour as we were told she was on the phone. She did offer to "take the broccoli off the bill". She refused to admit that there was a problem, claiming that we should have told our waitress that we wanted our children served first. She also claimed she responded within 2 minutes of our complaint. I could go on and on but in summary they failed at every turn and refused to admity any failing whatsoever. They are obviously of the belief that the customer is always wrong! This once fine restaurant is circling the bowl and they are in denial. read more
