Pork Schnitzel, German potato salad and beef Sauerbraten

Whenever my wife and I travel we always seek out German food as it's one of our favorites. We were super excited to find that Portland had Schulte & Herr. It's in a good location and the restaurant itself is very quaint. They can only seat about 20 people total so a reservation is a good idea. Our server/one of the owners I believe was very personable and actually from Germany. We were the last party to arrive but the food came out in a reasonable amount of time even with only one person cooking from what we could see. The portion sizes and execution were very well done. I had the beef Sauerbraten and my wife the pork Schnitzel. We enjoyed our food and would go again if in the area. They are BYOB, so sadly I wasn't able to try any German beers but that was fine. Overall I'd give them a 4.5 if I was able but not quite 5 stars.

The food was excellent. Their authentic German food is outstanding and should be a must stop if you're in Portland. This is a very small restaurant so I definitely recommend reservations. It's very easy to make them via email or phone. The restaurant is cozy and the service is outstanding. It is BYOB.

We come here once a year when working in Portland. Always amazing but last night was over the top. . From the potato pancakes to the schnitzel and spaetzle - absolutely delightful. Be sure to make a reservation as it's always full and is a small place. Owners are always so friendly and service is always top notch.

Amazing little restaurant on the peninsula. Due to COVID it is currently take out only. Authentic German cuisine that'll make you think you're in Europe. The schweineschnitzel was cooked to perfection, it was thin and the breading remained on. We tried both the potatoes gratin and German potatoe salad and we aren't sure which one we'll get next time. You have to try the schwäbische spätzle too! Carmelized onions to perfection. While the menu is small, you'll want to get one of each! We will be regulars at this place.

How can I not instantly love a place that plays Andrew Bird's "Noble Beast" album? Just like that, Schulte & Herr, you've won my heart. I wouldn't say that German food is something I frequently crave... though I am weirdly addicted to potato pancakes (topped with BOTH sour cream AND apple sauce at the SAME TIME... weird? Maybe. Delicious? #'Chup), warm potato salad, and beets. These are dishes I can make myself however, so they aren't necessarily something I'd go out of my way for. Unless it's rainy and I'm feeling particular lazy... enter Schulte & Herr. No, S&H isn't located in the most picturesque part of town, but all the better for us locals... I think it's safe to assume that most tourists wouldn't consider walking that part of Cumberland. The quaint restaurant is tucked behind a few trees (and so it can be hard to spot if you're flying past), so look for the white Christmas lights adorning the window. The inside is "charming" - in my opinion the decor feels both European and like my grandmother's house... this isn't a bad thing. The meal started with complimentary bread (some multigrain rye concoction, I believe?) accompanied by a cream cheese/sour cream/paprika/cornichons/chive spread (which tastes EXACTLY and PERFECTLY how you would think it would). For those carboholics, you're going to need to show a little self restraint. Had I not been in such polite company, I would have plowed through the entire basket with no regrets. Unfortunately, I couldn't have the potato salad because it's got bacon in it (le sigh) and I totally forgot to order beets, but I did get the potato pancakes which come three to a plate and are about three-ish inches in diameter. Accompanying them are both sour cream and apple sauce (though you can also get them with lox and horseradish sauce, and apparently that serving size is bigger). I thought the pancakes were perfectly golden and crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside; but, they were just a little under-seasoned - no worries, 'cause a healthy sprinkle of salt remedied that instantly. I'm not huge into lunch, so when I do eat it, it has to be on the "lighter" side. That being said, I have to admit... slathered with both apple sauce and sour cream, I was insanely satisfied with the portion and the price (how can you beat $5?!?!) of the pancakes. When I AM craving German food, I have no doubt that I'll find myself here again (especially if they continue to feed my soul with good music, too!).

Dinner setting. BYOB. Greatness :-)

Don't even bother showing up without a reservation. Even If every table is open and it is dead inside they will not be able to seat you.

Hurrah, delicious German food in the area! We were so excited when a friend recommended this spot…read moreto us for Schnitzel, spatzle, and everything in between. We made the reservation (highly recommended!) and took the 35 minute drive all the way to Brunswick to give them a try. SO SO happy we did! The space is cozy and lodge-like with German steins, maps, and decorations lining the walls. The staff is friendly and treats you like family right from the get-go. Our server was so wonderful and happy to answer any questions or make suggestions as needed, which included offering to bring a bottle of the Pinot Noir Rose instead of just 2 glasses. Oh, twist my arm! The bottle was a steal at $32 and the rose was light and fruity and delicious. We started our meal off with the snails over puff pastry. Let me just say... these were the most tender, plump snails I think I've ever had! The sauce was pure garlic butter, which was soooo good when soaked up by that perfectly crisp puff pastry. Flavor bomb! A bread basket was also brought out with pretzels (which my daughter said were exceptional) and fluffy little biscuits. Then the entrees - special of the day, Chicken Berliner Art, was a delight with the mushroom tarragon sauce and green onions. Lots of flavor just in the sauce! Hot potato salad was tasty and tangy, and the sauerkraut was SO GOOD - incredibly tender and loaded with flavor. There was not a cabbage morsel left by the end! The breading on my partner's Jagershnitzel was so light, so crispy, so perfect, as was the pork itself. Jager sauce had more of a lemon kick than I'm used to, but that was nice and added a good brightness to the dish. Spatzle was perfectly cooked but needed a hit of flavor, maybe a toss in some butter in herbs. Garlic mashed potatoes were creamy and garlic-y and to die for! My daughter tried the bread dumpling which was fun to eat - it reminded me of the ones my mom would make for chicken and dumplings, dense and spongy and yummy when dipped in some kind of sauce. We clearly had no room for dessert, but the brandy-filled chocolates that were brought with the check were a very nice touch and satisfied my sweet tooth. This is without a doubt the best German food in the area, authentic and comforting and so very tasty. We can't wait to come back!

Didnt have a reservation so our seats were less than choice BUT the food made up for it. Deep pours for beverages, tasty dishes, okay servers - I'd give this place a go.. a lot of locals ...Make a reservation and you're set for a decent evening dinner.
