Kid's chicken breast w/ spatzle and bread dumpling
    Melissa H.

Hurrah, delicious German food in the area! We were so excited when a friend recommended this spot to us for Schnitzel, spatzle, and everything in between. We made the reservation (highly recommended!) and took the 35 minute drive all the way to Brunswick to give them a try. SO SO happy we did! The space is cozy and lodge-like with German steins, maps, and decorations lining the walls. The staff is friendly and treats you like family right from the get-go. Our server was so wonderful and happy to answer any questions or make suggestions as needed, which included offering to bring a bottle of the Pinot Noir Rose instead of just 2 glasses. Oh, twist my arm! The bottle was a steal at $32 and the rose was light and fruity and delicious. We started our meal off with the snails over puff pastry. Let me just say... these were the most tender, plump snails I think I've ever had! The sauce was pure garlic butter, which was soooo good when soaked up by that perfectly crisp puff pastry. Flavor bomb! A bread basket was also brought out with pretzels (which my daughter said were exceptional) and fluffy little biscuits. Then the entrees - special of the day, Chicken Berliner Art, was a delight with the mushroom tarragon sauce and green onions. Lots of flavor just in the sauce! Hot potato salad was tasty and tangy, and the sauerkraut was SO GOOD - incredibly tender and loaded with flavor. There was not a cabbage morsel left by the end! The breading on my partner's Jagershnitzel was so light, so crispy, so perfect, as was the pork itself. Jager sauce had more of a lemon kick than I'm used to, but that was nice and added a good brightness to the dish. Spatzle was perfectly cooked but needed a hit of flavor, maybe a toss in some butter in herbs. Garlic mashed potatoes were creamy and garlic-y and to die for! My daughter tried the bread dumpling which was fun to eat - it reminded me of the ones my mom would make for chicken and dumplings, dense and spongy and yummy when dipped in some kind of sauce. We clearly had no room for dessert, but the brandy-filled chocolates that were brought with the check were a very nice touch and satisfied my sweet tooth. This is without a doubt the best German food in the area, authentic and comforting and so very tasty. We can't wait to come back!

As self proclaimed German food and beer lovers, we decided to try this place during our first night in Brunswick, ME. We were staying close by and walked over and were fortunate enough to grab a table on a Saturday evening, as we noted upon arrival that reservations were strongly encouraged. We were greeted and seated in minutes in the front dining room area (there is a back area as well behind the bar area) and provided with water. Nice. Our server was friendly and accommodating and promptly asked for our drink orders and answered our questions. We did not see most of the beers we are familiar with at other German establishments we frequent or have (including in Germany and Austria) but we were quite pleased with our selections. The cucumber salad was fantastic. The Jager schnitzel was different from what we are accustomed to and have had and made at home, but none the less very tasty. The red cabbage was outstanding. The pretzel and popovers brought in a basket to accompany the meal were super. Wonderful homey and relaxing atmosphere, great service, clean restrooms, nice decor. We would recommend a stop in.

We had a really good early dinner here tonight! We were happy to see most of our German favorites on the menu - schnitzel, wurst, spätzle, goulash, sauerbraten, wines, beers, etc. FYI - this wouldn't be a good place to bring a vegetarian for dinner - every entree is meat or fish based. For an appetizer we had the mushrooms which came with 4 and tasted fantastic! They also gave us complimentary rolls and hot pretzels, served warm and with a peppery mustard for the pretzel - Delicious! For dinner we split the German Sampler, which filled up both of us! It had a little bit of everything on it! Prices were reasonable, service was quick and courteous. Warm atmosphere. I would highly recommend checking them out!

We have not been here in a few years. My wife and I went tonight after receiving a gift certificate as a Christmas present. Admittedly, I am the bigger fan of German food so my wife tagged along as a good sport. I enjoyed the curry wurst I ordered very much! The sausage combined with a tomato-curry sauce is a great pairing. The accompanying red cabbage and sauerkraut were very good as well. The selection of German beers was excellent also. I wish I could remember the waitress's name because she handled 8-9 tables on her own and did an admirable job! Overall a good experience and I will be back!

Great atmosphere in such a quaint downtown. Authentic German food with great service!! There is more in Maine than Lobster!

It doesn't impress you upon first sight from the street. But were passing through Brunswick; actually on our way to get pizza at a place down the street when we noticed this "Authentic German Food" restaurant. We LOVE German food and decided to give it a try. They don't open until 4:30 and we had 45 mins to kill so we almost went to the pizza place after all. We walked in at 4:25 and were greeted by a cheery staffer and seated right away. BY 4:50 EIGHT of the THIRTEEN tables were seated with hungry diners. We knew we had stumbled upon something good! This place is GREAT!

German Sampler - A tasting of bratwurst, bauernwurst, gulasch, sauerbraten, both wiener and jägerschnitzel & all German side dishes.

Richard's is one of the few restaurants in Midcoast Maine that has authentic German cuisine. Am impressive "stein" collection on the walls.

The strudel appetizer--ham, asparagus, & cheddar was delicious.

I informed them our friend might have his certified veteran's service dog and with ease she knew a good place for us, so the dog could be comfortable and lay down if needed. Very veteran friendly restaurant. My dad loved it here for that reason. Glad he was able to try it before he passed away. They treated him with the utmost respect. Our server was friendly and fast on her feet! She patiently waited for everyone to make their decisions and listened carefully to customizations for the sandwiches and sides. Our beverages never went empty! She was awesome. Our food was fresh and portions were perfect. Not too much and not too little. We didn't leave hungry nor overfull. I loved the french fries. My haddock pieces were nice as well. My friend's Reuben looked amazing. My husband got the special - Poutine burger and said the gravy was nice. The fries weren't on it, which threw us off a bit, but the cheese curds (melted) and the gravy were nice. I loved my sangria. Before I get into the issues we experienced, I will say that we had a great night. Our server was…read morefantastic, the space is beautiful, and some of the food was tasty. The issues were glaring though. We arrived early for a group reservation of 10 and started at the bar. The service was very slow and we got the sense that the bartender was frustrated that we showed up early with the idea to have a cocktail before our reservation. Bar service continued to be painstakingly slow throughout the night. The restaurant was somehow out of several of their menu options (despite the restaurant not being busy on a weekend day). Not the end of the world, but it left us asking some questions. The major issues really arose when our entree courses were served. They had somehow ran out of french fries, and you could see that in the portion size of the frites in our steak frites (the picture included in our review was our plate -- we had BY FAR the most fries out of those at the table who ordered steak frites). And they ran out of steak - one of the people at our party who ordered steak frites was served a hamburger (which isn't even on the menu). Overall, I thought that we overpaid for the food and if it wasn't for the good company at our dinner - I would have been very frustrated.

Not by any means bad, but so many flaws and so far below my high expectations from other reviews…read morethat my 2 star rating is appropriate, though it gives me no pleasure to do so. I have no issues with my waitress, Brianna or any of the other staff I interacted with. And, while the food certainly sounds interesting on the menu, it doesn't translate to tasty, attractive plates and this needs attention desperately. The menu is very small, all fitting easily on one page. There were no specials. My appetizer was the best thing of the meal, Roasted Cauliflower, with fava cream, roasted almonds, fresno puree, mint oil, and duck crackling. The plating was attractive. I liked the subtly minted fava cream (think hummus), the cauliflower florets tender and sweet from the roasting. But the mint leaves were whole (should have been julienned), the almonds didn't seem particularly roasted, and as for duck cracklings? I forgot they were even there until I reread the menu this morning while writing this review. There were 5 specialty cocktails listed on a card on the table. My Water Street Ol' Fashioned was made with Knob Creek bourbon, Liqueur 43, maple, honey, burnt orange. It wasn't sufficiently chilled. But the flavor was good, it seemed strong enough, and the cherry was of high quality; perhaps Luxardo. The wine list included some unusual selections, including an ice wine from Ontario by the glass, which I had with dessert and enjoyed. My entree was - there's really no other way to put it - a disaster. Braised Lamb: charred eggplant, blistered red pepper, polenta cake, mint gremolata. First impression: what incredibly sloppy plating! Everything piled onto one side of the plate, stray crumbs on the other side. Like somebody tripped but caught themself on the way to delivering it. This was not a cohesive dish. It was a collection of ingredients. The meat lacked flavor (what was it braised in - water?) and was divided into two odd-shaped chunks. The eggplant was chewy and sour, not noticeably charred as described. The greens (pea greens?) were a tangled mass off to one side, uncut and difficult to eat. Even with these flaws it might have been saved by a flavorful sauce to bring it together but there wasn't any. I would have added salt but there was none on the table and I didn't bother to ask. I hoped maybe they could redeem themselves with a good dessert. Sadly this was not to be. Just 4 things on the menu, none of them sounding very interesting. I should have just settled on the Affogato - hard to get this wrong. Instead, and untypically for me I chose the Chocolate Pot de Creme, unimaginatively described "... strawberry jam, vanilla granola." Like chocolate pudding out of a box (or how I remember it, being over 50 years since I've had it). The granola? Literally like they opened a box of cereal and dumped some on top. The jam unmemorable but it added contrasts in sweetness. Some whipped cream and maybe chopped mint would have been welcome additions. They had the audacity to list "Bread & Butter" in their small plates section. Described as "warm bread, lemon chive butter." How unimaginative! And while it is unfortunately getting more common to charge for bread, I believe strongly that table bread should be free. Always. Some good things too. The main dining room and bar are beautiful, with an uncluttered, modern look mixed with country touches like a farm table adorned with some wine bottles and potted plants, a worn oriental rug beneath. Knick-knack shelves on the walls, painted vines on the walls. Mostly soft jazz playing for music. But the long and thin layout is a drawback because no table gets good views, especially on the porch. I could have faced the outside windows with a view of the parking lot or the open windows to the inside, where I sat, where my views were cut off by large plastic plants. Really the best place to sit is at the very attractive bar. Where, by all means if you're staying at the hotel have some drinks and a snack, but I suggest you seek other alternatives for dining.
