This place wreaked. My daughter and I were hit with a barrage of smells as we entered the store, and it was truly overwhelming. Just when we thought we'd reached safe refuge (mostly from the unhoused population who'd set up camp directly outside of their entrance), we now faced this nasal assault. There is a tiny corner in the back labeled CVS, but don't be fooled. This is simply a pharmacy counter surrounded by a few first aid essentials. I was looking to purchase a pair of scissors. There were none to be found. The store sells beer, wine and spirits, but all of the more expensive brands were locked up. I didn't realize this until I was exiting the store and saw the case near the check-out counters (most of which are self-service). I walked up to check out the selection and waited for someone to come over. I was advised that I'd need to stand in the extremely long line and request what I wanted once my turn came up. I'm guessing that they have an issue with theft in this area. I understood, and certainly wasn't try to cut anyone in line, so I walked back around to the line (the store has a unique layout), and stood empty-handed until my turn came up. I then spoke with the same woman and asked her to retrieve the Remy Martin from the locked case for me. Employees are rude, entrances are regularly closed off/broken, the place REEKS most of the time, and their selection is poor. Have also purchased several frozen meals here and more than a few have had their trays shattered by whoever is handling stocking. This urban supermarket manages to pack in nearly everything you'll need for your apartment kitchen and there is a good selection of grab-and-go for the nearby office workers. Bakery, frozen, health and beauty, dairy, produce. They have a good selection. The store also has a CVS pharmacy. I stopped by the deli and the young lady did a fab job of slicing up something for me to bring back to the hotel room for lunch. Just as well because it also ended up being dinner too because I was so busy. Self-checkout worked well. From what I understand, this is a small chain in St. Louis, but I may be wrong. It was a little disappointing in terms of a visit for me though as this store is all over the place. As you walk in, you have no idea where to go as some things are upstairs, others are all the way in the back, just no sense of direction inside. While prices are fair and they carry good produce, meats, alcohol, snacks, etc., it really just needs a little help. Staff are a tad hard to find or get assistance from, which was another downer. I had visited this location several times as my AirBnB was nearby, so while it was convenient and after several visits of understanding the store layout, I would not consider it my go to store (location) if I lived nearby to be honest. The business listing is a bit misleading because it's title Schnuck's Culinaria-Pharmacy mislead me into thinking that it was a generic small pharmacy. The reality is that Schnuck's Culinaria is really the only supermarket in downtown St. Louis. When it opened its doors on August 11, 2009 (1) it became the first supermarket to open in downtown since 1985 (3). Schnuck's has been a St. Louis supermarket institution since 1939. It grew from a 1,000 square foot store in St. Louis to over 100 stores throughout four Midwest states. When Schnuck's opened in 2009 in a state-owned building owned by the Missouri Development Finance Board (3) they made a silent statement. That silent statement is that they believe in the revitalization of downtown so much that they invested $7.5 million in the prototype supermarket (3). Nearly ten years after Schnuck's opened the Culinaria, which means "cuisine" by the way ; cranes and construction equipment are transforming historic blighted buildings with closed storefronts into lofts and apartments with street level retail. Although the future looks bright, the retail and fast food landscape in downtown St. Louis has seen better days. Schnuck's has an advantage in a downtown area that lost Tim Hortons, two McDonald's, Nathan's, Walgreens, and for crying out loud a Chick-fil-A (in the former City Center Mall). A big reason is that many nearby office workers stop here for lunch. By, the way they can also stop off for coffee in the supermarket's Kaldi's Coffee Bar. It was so busy that the one cue leading to ten registers was so long that I passed over buying water for the walk to Union Station. However, I did look around the urban supermarket. The best place to begin exploring the two level supermarket is from the railing of the 6,000 square foot mezzanine. From this viewpoint I took in the 21,000 square foot main floor below. When I turned around I took in a room full of wine, beer, and alcohol. For tourists such as myself with a hotel room refrigerator this selection can come in handy. And it is on this level where the restrooms are. The main floor stocked all the essentials of a supermarket. Perhaps in a tighter space with less selection than a suburban supermarket. Regardless they sell what the shopper needs from dry grocery to fresh seafood to a deli to a pharmacy. Additionally they stock the higher end Culinaria store brand along with freshly made food. Throughout the store I saw label banners advertising sales on clean shelves. What impressed me the most besides the fact that they are the only supermarket in downtown St. Louis is their silent statement through investment that they believe that downtown St. Louis has a bright future. It was ambiance was decent and the service was fair. It was definitely a different experience from years back when it was referred to as "The Culinaria". The HOT prepared food section was much better then. I at my lunch hour, it's a 7-8 min walk from my place. I will continue to give it a try because it's a convenient walk for me. A highlight of our trip to downtown St Louis. Travelers, this place is a must stop if staying downtown and looking to stock up on groceries. Excellent selection of fresh bakery items and donuts, prepared foods, fresh produce, etc. Donuts were outstanding, loved how they had small portions of fruit and fruit cups prepared and ready to go. While I understand the prices are higher at Culinaria for the convenience of being downtown, I do not understand why the quality of the products and produce are so low. I come here quite a bit to grab requested products for work. The florals here are often twice as expensive as what you can get at a Trader Joe's, and the quality is often quite disappointing. During today's visit the bouquets available were on their last leg. When I got back to work and unwrapped the flowers to use the stems were all soggy, covered in brown goo, and multiple leaves were browned and dead. Not cool, Culinaria. read more

I must admit that I am somewhat disappointed in this store. The reasons my dissatisfaction are: 1) The store could be a little cleaner 2) Despite being centrally located for those who either work or live downtown, the store currently closes at or around 5pm; which makes it difficult to shop there after work 3) The exterior could be a little cleaner and often has people conjugating outside and/or requesting money (not a good look during a pandemic) This location has a lot of potential and I look forward to things changing once the pandemic ends. At long last, I've shopped at Culinaria! I've been to some smaller Schnucks before -- the one in Frontenac comes to mind -- but this store was not frustrating in its limited selection and setup. They definitely had less variety, and the setup was weird, but it was all refreshing. I didn't go upstairs, but that appears to be mostly alcohol. There were a few bistro tables and a woman was sitting there. Possibly an eating area up there too? The employees were very nice. Damn near choked trying to swallow this ish. I had to go get my mom something else and it was salty as hell. Culinaria is a great little grocery store located in the heart of Downtown St. Louis next to the Old Post Office. Designed for urban dwellers, convention goers, and office workers, this compact size Schnucks offers a surprisingly good variety of products. I like the layout of the store and its various sections. Similar to the larger suburban stores, but smaller in size, this one has a salad bar, ready-made food bar, bakery, meats, seafood, pharmacy, and much more. I'll try to keep it simple and just highlight some of my favorites in the store: The cheese selection is quite nice, offering a variety of different cheeses. Look for the Gjetost Norwegian cheese and give it a try if you've never had it; it's good stuff! The sandwich bar has some delicious options which can be made to order and grilled panini style while you wait. They make a decent Cubano sandwich. I don't know what it is about the cookies here, but everyone at work loves me for picking up the huge platters for special occasions. The gooey butter cookies are absolutely amazing! If you like gooey butter cake, then you'll love the cookie version at Culinaria. The olive bar has some nice options with the olive & feta mix being my favorite. I could eat this as a meal and be satisfied! Don't forget to visit the 2nd floor for a large variety of wines and spirits. The beer selection is on the main floor, where they have a good selection of craft brews. The checkout line is European style where everyone waits in one line for the next available cashier. This eliminates that annoying problem of being stuck in the slow checkout lane. While the line can be quite long, it usually goes quick. I had the best experience today with Culinaria and so I wanted to share with whoever reads this review. My Doctor called in a prescription for me today (at another location) a little after 6pm. The pharmacy at Culinaria closes at 7pm. I needed to contact this pharmacy and request a transfer since I live in the city. I called and spoke with the pharmacy tech and she was so very helpful-even offered to call the other pharmacy to get the correct information. Then she asked if I needed the prescription tonight-of course I told her that I would really really like to have it before they close. She told me that she would do what she could to have it ready for pick up before they close. I arrived just before closing and when I asked if the prescription was ready she told me that the pharmacist was a miracle worker and they had just finished filling it! Thank goodness! Both the tech and the pharmacist were so friendly and I walked out of there with a "free " prescription! Yes, Schnuck's has free antibiotics and they also offer some for $4! You should check out their list and see if you can save money by transferring to Schnucks! I had a great experience tonight and I just wanted to say thanks! Ever since I was little I've loved grocery stores, so you can imagine how high my level of excitement gets walking into Culinaria. Bright colors, gorgeous decor, happy music, city dwellers... It's about time St. Louis got a full-service grocery store downtown! I avoided Culinaria for a bit out of fear of a parking disaster, but it's ridiculously easy. Grab a ticket, pull into the garage, and take the elevator to the first floor. Done! Pretty sure anyone can figure that out. There are so many things to look at when you walk in! Don't go hungry because you have to walk past the gelato counter to get to anything else. They also serve Kaldi's coffee, so for me, going here is a two birds-one stone type of situation. Culinaria is the only grocery store I don't get grossed-out in while making a salad from the salad bar because it is totally immaculate, and everything is fresh. (Go to the Schnucks on Lindell and try to make one - I dare you.) As a lot of reviewers noted, there's a "Sandwich Express" shop in Culinaria so you can easily grab something to go. ("Sandwich Express" uses Boar's Head meats and cheeses, and also has a "build your own sandwich" option.) Great wine selection also, much like other "nicer" Schnucks markets. For me, the check-out is the best part. Call me easily amused, but waiting in line until an attendant raises a giant wooden spoon (which is the signal that he/she is open) is enough to put a smile on my face. They have a lot of tempting items lined up next to the waiting line, so beware. I'll get all the way through the store with healthy items and then cave on the gooey butter cookies a minute before I check out. Don't go here if you have to do a LOT of shopping... the aisles are pretty small, and the registers aren't really equipped to handle food for two weeks worth of family dinners. I rarely see people walking around with carts here... it's more of a grab-what-you-need for a few days type place. Get what you need, and give the parking attendant your receipt on the way out. I can get spoiled shopping @ Culinaria. Downtown dwellers have it so good. If I lived closer, this would be my grocer of choice. I work downtown, so this is a great place to pick-up lunch/dinner from their prepared foods section. I love the way the staff sell and describe the daily offerings. They do it as if they were waiters at a trendy cafe. I've also gone in and picked up some non-perishable items on my lunch hour and have drooled over the extra selection of items available to the Culinaria stores. It still isn't Whole Foods, but damn close. The staff is friendly, almost beyond believable. They must have selected the best of all their stores and transfered them to this location. read more

We were in town for 36 hours and found this grocery store near our hotel- thanks to Yelp and had a very pleasant, healthy and affordable dinner with my family. We were greeted by a SUPER friendly and helpful team member. This place has fresh and a wide variety and fresh pre packaged salads, make your own subs, fresh soups, nice eating area upstairs. Cool/ unique aspects of this store that I didn't experience is the shrimp bar and unique local foodie type offerings. Great vibe. We walked, but it looks like u get 1-2 hrs of free parking (depending on the time/day) when you shop/dine here. Side Note: they close promptly at the times listed.
