I found this place on Facebook, and decided to go Monday for lunch. They have a lunch special every day, and a calendar on Facebook that let's you know what the special is. Every Monday is "Freddie's famous meatloaf", with green beans and mashed potatoes. I literally had lunch, and dinner from the plate. It was delicious! The potatoes and beans were also good. What a pleasant spot! I recently moved to the neighborhood and drive by regularly. I've been here in the past multiple times, but nothing too recent. I needed a quick lunch and didn't want to opt for fast food. Popped in here to find a bunch of freshly made sandwiches and salads, all super responsibly priced. They have tons of other grocery options, as well as deli items. I ended up getting a turkey sandwich and the broccoli slaw. The items were fresh and well made, absolutely loved the broccoli salad. I also grabbed some bags for leaves here. Staff were personable and welcoming. Looking forward to more visits in the future. read more

So glad I found this place! An unexpected hidden gem in a Webster Groves neighborhood. It's in the middle of a subdivision! Top notch deli counter, try the Freddie's turkey, I love it and I went there looking for Boar's Head fresh cut deli teriyaki chicken after Schnucks quit serving Boar's Head recently. Freddie's Market also has Fazio's Italian seeded bread! Score! along with lots of house baked pies, croissants, muffins & breads. The meat counter is just the best for steaks and roasts, bbq pork and beef, they have crab legs the size of a child's arm, no kidding. I stopped by for lunch for the burnt tips lunch w/chips, potato salad and a dessert, man oh man, things are sure, not like they used to be even here at Freddies . Firstly, the rib tips were barely room temperature, they were sitting in heavy greasy oil, the taste of lighter fluid was quite obvious on the meat and it was tough and chewy beyond belief!! It's my guess they were quickly cooked for the outside doneness without paying attention to the chewiness. Either way, not at all good the spice cake that it came with was stale, and the icing was so sweet it was inedible ... I don't know about you, but when I spend $13.50 , expect quality, that wasn't the case! Very disappointed that most of my lunch wound up in the garbage! read more

About two weeks ago, I made my visit to Freddie's Market (Big Bend and Rock Hill). I had two motivations: to find an alternative to the crowds at larger stores and to support a small business. I liked the store--decent selection and great, fresh bread-- but was disappointed that there was no social distancing (SD): no masks or gloves on employees, no signs to keep people apart, etc. On May 16, I made a second visit, hoping things had improved. What a disappointment! I asked the cashier, apparently a long-time employee or maybe a co-owner: "No masks on employees?" Her response was a dismissive "no," along with a weak smile and slight shrug. Seemed to be suggesting that a virus is of no concern to a small neighborhood store. I decided to leave without purchasing anything. It saddens me that a small business welcomes its neighbors as customers but is unwilling to do anything to protect them from the virus. Interestingly, on their web page, they have a COVID update, but it simply mentions their specials and pickup/delivery procedures. Nothing about precautions, limitations, etc. read more

Every time I go to Freddie's Market I am amazed at how clean and organized it is. It is a small store but it seems to always have what I need. All of the staff is friendly and helpful. I've visited this little market several times over the years. When I was a bit younger, my grandma lived within walking distance and it was such a treat to go to Freddie's and treat ourselves to some good ole ted Drews's ice cream or other such sweets! Hi folks - I have lived near Freddie's Market since 2000. I faithfully support neighborhood businesses when I can and I was thrilled to discover this small local grocery store just a few blocks away. Over the years their inventory has reflected current market and health trends by providing new products for customers to try. They also cater, offer house-made products and offer seasonal specials year round. Prices are higher than larger grocery stores but are in line with some of the gourmet items they offer. Their meat counter features actual butchers, a rare find these days. Most of the staff is friendly enough but there is often an older woman at the checkout who has little to say and rarely smiles or makes eye contact, so people may get the impression she doesn't care, which maybe she doesn't... So, why two stars? Two major observations from a long time neighbor: 1. The butchers do not wear disposable gloves nor do they wash their hands between customers. 2. Their meat and produce isn't always fresh and they consistently have dairy and dry goods for sale that are outdated - sometimes by days, weeks or even months past their expiration date. Many times I've brought chicken or beef home only to unwrap it that evening or the next day and smelled meat on its way to going bad. FRESH poultry and meat smell clean and raw. We all know how it smells and looks when it isn't fresh. Or getting produce home to find black spots, mold or worse underneath. As for the dairy and shelf products - I've lost count of how many times I've grabbed an item only to get home and find it outdated - sometimes alarmingly so! I have returned to exchange items on numerous occasions and I've written emails to the owner. But nothing has changed. Just last week my husband stopped in to pick up a box of cereal and poured a bowl the following morning. It tasted so bad he checked the date on the box and found an expiration date for 2012. I know going in that anything with an expiration date MUST be checked before buying it - dairy, grains, juices, beverages, canned goods, frozen items, etc. I want so much to like this store and I love the location. But I learned A LONG TIME AGO that we cannot count on the management to m-a-n-a-g-e their meat and store inventory correctly or healthfully. Freddie's carries many great products - they just simply DO NOT monitor their produce and meat stock for freshness or everything else for expiration dates. Too bad. There are not many places like Freddie's Market left. I am a meat cutter at one of the chain stores and I drive all the way to Webster Grovers to buy meat at Freddie's (my wife doesn't get it). There are some things at Freddie's that you just cannot find at other stores, for example if you order a side of beef from Freddie's you are getting a side of beef. They bring in a side from a local packer break it down and cut it, every other place in St. Louis that I have seen uses box beef to fill orders like this. Freddie's Deli is really great and it has grown vastly since I have been shopping there. They carry the Boar's Head brand for some meats and cheeses. What I really like is the made in house deli meats that they have, Turkey breast they bake and season, roast beef that is a USDA Choice top round, and local Miller Hams (my favorite). All their deli salads are made in house as are their B.B.Q. and smoked items. THE BACON!!!! Freddie's gets in LOCAL smoked pork bellies as a whole piece and cuts them into bacon in the store, this is unheard of in all other stores that I have ever been in or worked in. THE PORK!!!! You guessed it the pork comes from a LOCAL farm too! They also use the trimmings from that local pork to make their brats and other linked sausage. When it comes to beef at Freddie's they buy only USDA Choice. Most of the big chain stores are selling select beef (a lower grade) for the same price that Freddie's is selling choice. Being a meat cutter this makes all the difference to me, there are not many things that I would buy grade select. Chicken and fish is a nice display at Freddie's. They offer free range birds and can order anything a customer might want. I learned all this information by talking with the butchers behind the counter, three of which have owned their own butcher's shops. Freddie's offers more local and farm to table products than any other independent store in St. Louis, From dairy, to Produce, and Meat. Their prices are right in line with the wholesales prices. If I had my own Butcher's Shop I would want my case to look like Freddie's. read more

I've tried their lunch special a few times now and its always hit or miss. Ribs are usually good, but beware of "rib-eye" steak lunches! I've gone here 4 times for rib-eye steak and have only gotten a rib-eye twice! 50/50! Although, 1 time was a strip steak, it wasn't bad, just not what was advertised. This last time I went, it wasn't even steak! It was some sort of rump roast cut into steak looking slices, grilled and passed off as steak! That's false advertising, and not worth the $7!!! So Freddies, if you're going to do rib-eye steak lunch, serve a rib-eye steak. If not, at least call it "steak" lunch. You're not fooling anyone. read more

Trust me, this is a GEM of a little store. They are not competing with Schnucks, they're too smart for that. Sure, they have plenty of popular 'regular groceries', but they also have specialty items peppered throughout the store that you can't get anywhere else. They have a selection of THE best quality eggs, fresh from local farms, the best I can find anywhere, big orange yolks, delicious. They have coconut butter, plain, chocolate, etc., with no sugar, no bad ingredients. They have Bubbies raw sauerkraut. You get the picture. To top it off, parking is very convenient, and the store has a friendly, homey atmosphere. Love you, Freddies Market! Please, please, keep on keepin' on! read more

I shop here periodically and have always had a good experience. Yesterday I stopped in and bought some goodies for a New Year's Eve celebration and the staff at the meat/deli counter were very helpful and the young lady at the check-out was extremely friendly! I bought a tenderloin as well as some grass-fed beef and some of their fantastic chicken salad and could not be more satisfied with my experience. I will be back! read more

Sorry, dear lady, but your claims ring hollowly. Robert M. began with a gripe that service is not friendly. I can only wonder what you did to upset everyone on your various visits. I've been wandering in and out of Freddie's for many years... probably beginning around 1958 - 1960. I've lived across several continents since then and, now, find myself back in Webster for the last 25-ish years and living "very" close to Freddie's for the last 10-ish years. As a result of that proximity, I've become far more acquainted with Freddie's. It's a great place!!!! You may find the prices a penny higher than the "super" market down the street. Who cares? 90% of the products for which I shop are here, parking is much more convenient, and it's closer to my home! That counts!! I'm a great fan of Freddie's daily specials and for the last couple of years that I've received the weekly menu, it always arrived on Monday which made me miss more than a few meat loaf specials. And, when I brought this issue to the owner, it was barely a week before the menus began appearing on Sunday afternoon. To summarize: PRO... Convenient, friendly, SUPERB meat department, great daily specials, and competitively priced! CON... not enough room to have EVERYthing. I don't understand one negative remark. I shop here frequently and the staff couldn't be more accommodating. O.K., it is a bit more that Schnucks or Shop and Save, both fine stores too, but Freddy's is so often more convenient. I have developed physical problems and can call ahead and they will have my order ready, I go to the door , announce myself and I can wait in the car, give the staff member my check when the groceries are placed in the trunk of my car. I call and have a meat order ready for my son to pick up , when I was failing in health the young lady would go to the butcher's counter and bring meat to the cashier...what more can I ask? Also they deliver to your home. It's pricy, but doable and delivery man sets them them conveniently on where ever I specify. WONDERFUL grocery store! Fresh veggies and excellent meat . read more

We love Freddie's. I have never had a bad experience here. Great meat. Great meals to go. Prices are as expected for a small, neighborhood store. Lots of interesting gourmet items, too! I needed jumbo pasta shells, and went to Aldi, Shop-n-Save, Schnucks, and Dierbergs. No one had them....except Freddie's. Next time I will check Freddie's first! read more

Not friendly, not reasonably-priced, not special. Why go here? The theory of a Freddie's Market is way better than the practice. In theory this is a cute little old fashioned neighborhood grocery, in business since 1946. In practice though I have found the prices steep and the workers decidedly unfriendly. I once pointed out to a clerk that they were selling expired soda. She acted like she couldnt care less. Today, stopping in to buy a couple treats for my office, I was in a hurry. I had to wait at the conveyor belt for a few minutes with no attendant. Even though the attendant had obviously seen me at the back of the store. She was shelving some groceries and had decided to check me out "on her time." So I had to rouse her from the aisle she was in. She seemed angered when I notified her of my peresence at the conveyor belt. Sure enough, she was really angry and didnt speak another word to me throughout the entire checkout process. Not a thanks or "come again". Nothing. I shared more two-way communication with the auto card processor than with her. Also, I note that she had her whole arm tattooed down to the wrist. That might play well in Soulard, but in the sleepy, concervative bedroom community on this end of Webster, it is way out-of-place. And if you *are* going to be all inked-up, you at least have to be moderately frirndly in order to at least front that you don't hate my conservative, tie-wearing guts. So, while I'll admit I'd rather have Freedie's than a QT or 7-11, the marginal improvement is not that great. At least at QT, they say, "See you next time." N.B. I haven't tried anything from their meat department, and I have been tempted to try their beef brisket. But I am hesitant to spend $40-50 on a piece of meat from an unfriendly, price-gouging place. read more

Freddie's Market IS a wonderful neighborhood grocery store!! They have been in business for 65 years - so they must be doing something right! Their meat is the best in town - and the cleanliness of their meat dept. is unbeatable! Larry, Freddie's son, owns and runs the store. He personally goes to "Produce Row" to hand pick the produce! He also can be seen behind the meat counter because he is a great butcher (taught by the best - Freddie himself!) The employees are very friendly and always helpful. And, where can you call in your grocery list and have it all ready and waiting for you to pick up -- or have it delivered to your doorstep? I say that the few extra cents spent at Freddie's is nothing considering the outstanding service, fresh meat and produce and the yummy fresh (and locally made!) breads, pies and cheesecakes. Plus...it feels so good to know that we are supporting a small, local, family-owned business! read more

I've lived in walking distance to Freddie's Market for over thirty years. I must admit I have not regularly shopped there through the years. Like most people I shop at a larger market for most my groceries. Yet I have been grateful that I could always depend on them for any item I failed to pickup. Small neighborhood grocery stores are far and few in between. People expect them to be able to run like a large chain. This is not being fair or practical. How can a small market compete with such? We need to be grateful for the convenience they offer us. That said I do shop there now regularly for specialty items like fresh eggs from pasture raised chickens and meat from fully pastured raised animals. And they often offer tomatoes that have not been sprayed with chemicals. Any price increase is offset many times by the fuel you save and the convenience. Also all these years I have found the atmosphere and employees friendly. That being said everyone is entitled to having a bad day. Maybe you are the one who needs to learn patience. You know what they say, "Smile and the world smiles with you." read more
