Gerst Haus | Evansville, Indiana…read more While visiting Evansville, Indiana, we decided to have dinner at Gerst Haus. I was particularly interested in experiencing authentic German cuisine, and this restaurant turned out to be an excellent choice! Gerst Haus is located in a historic building dating back to 1890, with very high ceilings, dark wooden booths, ornate architectural details, and walls filled with vintage German memorabilia and historical photographs. The atmosphere adds a lot to the dining experience, and there's plenty to look at! We started with the Sausage Sampler appetizer, featuring an assortment of German sausages, sauerkraut, cold German potato salad, and thick-cut rye bread. The cold potato salad was especially interesting, with sliced potatoes in a sweet-and-tangy, relish-like dressing. It was excellent! I also tried the hot German potato salad, which was equally delicious. For my main course, I ordered the Sauerbraten with spaetzle and green beans. The beef was very tender and flavorful, with a unique combination of seasonings that I really enjoyed. It was served in a bowl with a generous amount of flavorful, broth-like liquid rather than a thick gravy. I enjoyed it so much that I eventually switched from a fork to a spoon to finish it! The spaetzle reminded me of a combination of noodles and dumplings, with good flavor and texture. The green beans were good as well, and the thick-cut rye bread served with many of the dishes was particularly tasty. Service was excellent! Our server was very attentive throughout the meal, making the experience even more enjoyable. I would definitely recommend Gerst Haus to anyone visiting Evansville who is looking for an authentic German dining experience. Between the traditional German dishes, historic surroundings, and excellent service, this was a very enjoyable visit. If my travels bring me back to Evansville, I would definitely return and try another traditional German dish to explore even more of Germany's rich food culture! Gerst Haus 2100 W. This was a Monday night and a lot of the restaurants in Jasper, Indiana are closed on Mondays. I was so hoping this would be better food. The wings were not done and not tasty at all. My daughter only ate two and threw the rest away. The fries absolutely had no seasoning, not even salt. I ordered a coney. The sauce had no flavor. I ate it just because I was hungry. I ordered fried pickles after eating one I literally threw the whole thing away. I have never tasted such bad fried pickles before. This place was sure a disappointment.

The Jaeger schnitzel was hearty tender and delicious with a great crunch on the breading! Red cabbage was seasoned perfectly with just the right amount of sweet and tangy with a couple of Hintz of the spice. I'm not even sure what it was, but it was really awesome. If you get the Spaetzle and you're a traditionalist be sure to ask for it just the buttered version not the saucy white sauce, cheese version. I would definitely make the trip again and recommend it to anyone looking for a good German meal. The menu is a little bit limited, but I'm guessing everything they do is exquisite. Prost!!

The server seemed dazed and confused. We asked him questions but he didn't seem to know anything. We absolutely love German food so we were excited. However, this wasn't really German food. First, how does a German restaurant not have German beer on tap? Then I ordered the schnitzel. It wasn't pounded out correctly and was too thick to be considered schnitzel. The breading had no seasoning. My husband (vegetarian) ordered the veggie melt, which was on the menu, but he was told they no longer make it. He ended up getting a "sides plate." When it arrived, there were 4 of the smallest portions of sides ever. Why not just make spaetzel a main dish? Voila, you have a vegetarian option! My daughter ended up getting a pretzel because the spaetzel she wanted had too many other ingredients in it for her liking. That's on us not the restaurant. Overall, as German restaurant connoisseurs, we were disappointed.

There were 4 of us in our party and we were seated at a table in the corner near the bar. Was definitely a cozy spot with so many people being in there and the bar being full. I had The Holy Ghost cocktail and it was a pomegranate hibiscus sour, it had just the right amount of sour! I do not like bitter drinks and this one was good and easy to drink. My husband had a couple of dark beers, I do not remember which ones but he liked them. The cheese curds were good, but very greasy. We ordered a prime dip with sweet potato fries and a pork sandwich with tots. When we received the food, the pork and tots were cold - like not even warm. I asked about omitting the slaw on the pork sandwich but was told it was on the side. It was not on the side, but was easily removed. The pork tasted like it was store bought and dry but was slathered in sauce to hide that, but didn't do a great job. On a positive note, the prime dip was hot and delicious. Our server was very nice and attentive, as well. While I might go back, I would be hesitant about what to order.

It was 4:30 and staffed looked bored. Yet our server was hard to seek out. No refills without setting the empty glasses on the edge of the table. Wife ordered prime rib dipper. She enjoyed it and it was flavorful. I ordered the 12 oz ribeye medium. It was a few notches past well. I guess I am used to higher quality meats in restaurants. This was a low grade choice (maybe high end select) at best. Dry except for the butter it was covered in to give the perception of juices. Again, waitress was hard to find as wife was near finished by the time she checked. We often tip well. I typically start at 20% and go from there. I did tip huh at mot what I am used to. I can separate the kitchen and the service and will not lessen my tip if it's on the kitchen. It was a miss on both. The manager was apologetic (did not ask to speak to one though) and said she appreciated the feedback. To be fair, the server was not rude or unpleasant, just not there. We frequent this area with extra curricular activities our son is in. Not sure if we will give it another shot.

NICK'S ENGLISH HUT IN BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA IS NOSTALGIC…read more============================== I attended a parent's cocktail party about nine years ago when I visited IU during the student orientation for my son. I had fun, had a beer and collected a Nick's Hut glass jar/glass. Fast forward nine years and my son and daughter-in-law had their "Welcome Party" the evening before their wedding on Friday, June 19, 2026. This was after their wedding rehearsal and dinner elsewhere. We had a great time on the second floor that was totally reserved for our big group. They had more food, beer and other beverages as well. Kind of cool to attend events before my son started college and years later.
