There is much to love about Indiana's Tell City Pretzels…read more Tell City is a city of about 7,300 people located in Perry County on the banks of the Ohio River. In some ways, Tell City is your typical Indiana river town - small population, friendly people, perfectly fine for a day trip, and a handful of businesses perhaps more known than others. In Tell City, you can visit Tipsaw Lake Recreation Area, the Ohio River Scenic Railway, Birdseye, and Young's Creek. With a little planning, you can also check out Tell City Pretzels or you can, in fact, buy those pretzels locally including at A Taste of Indiana. Tell City Pretzels really had its origin in 1858 when Casper Gloor, a master baker from Switzerland, arrived in the Tell City area. He brought a pretzel recipe with him and the pretzel soon became popular. He passed it down to his baker. The baker handed it down to his own sons. They were hand baked and twisted ever since. In 2009, the family sold Tell City Pretzels to Brad and Sandy Smith who've continued the same recipe and hand-twisting traditions. Tell City Pretzels continues to be devoted to pretzels - pretzel pieces with seven different flavors, cinnamon and sugar pretzel pieces, original whole pretzels (salt or no salt), honey mustard pretzels, chocolate covered pretzels, and various other combinations and packaging options. While the pretzels are easy to find in southwest Indiana, you can also get them at A Taste of Indiana, Market District in Carmel, Sullivan Hardware at 70th and Keystone, and a handful of out of state options plus through the Tell City Pretzels website. While the recipe remains a secret to this day, you can arrange for a tour when in the Tell City area. My favorite? The garlic pretzels. I'm a fan of garlic anyway, but their garlic pretzels are simply amazing. Tell City Pretzels is a longtime Indiana company and it has been nice to see the company stay in the Indiana area even after being sold. If you get a chance, check them out.

Went in for the first time while on a Walmart trip. Had heard of these pretzels but had never even…read moretried them yet. A man at the counter told us all about them. I told him we had never tried them yet. Told him we were new to the area. He said they used to have samples. Super cool guy. We bought two flavors and left. We like how crunchy they are and the different flavors. I like the "burnt" flavored ones that are just a little more brown than actually burned.

Kitschy, yes, but despite that the food is genuinely spectacular…read more Bratwurst was super flavorful and cooked perfectly with a caramelized outside, a good snap, and a moist inside. The pretzel bun was heated appropriately and had the right amount of flavor. The optional spicy mustard is really powerful. My only possible complaint would be that the spatzle were a bit on the soggy side, perhaps overcooked. That said, the spatzle also come with an incredible sauerbraten gravy. My only regret, really, is not having had dessert.

Atmosphere is fun, it really embraces the German decor (saw a review or too calling it kitschy, in a good way, which I think is a fair description). Service is friendly and attentive (and in the costumed German garb to keep with the themes). Lots of classic German dishes (several schnitzel varieties, brats, spatzel, etc.). I won't say anything I've had over the years blows me away, but haven't had a bad choice either. The Wiener schnitzel I had most recently was tender and tasty, with a perfectly fried batter, and the German fries were nicely crisped on the exterior and beautifully seasoned. Good beer selection (including some brewed for the restaurant), reasonable wine list...love that you can go all out and have your beer in the classic giant boot! Small gift shop as well, some souvenir items as well as some candies and food options.

Brewery #283 Santa…read moreClaus Brewery needs a lot of help. I pulled up to the parking lot and wasn't sure where the entrance was because there was a worker loading supplies in through the only door I saw. I walked to the side and saw a set of stairs to a second floor door and thought this can't be it. So I walked back and asked the employee where the entrance was and he shook his head in disgust and pointed to the door that he had blocked with supplies. I climbed over all the stuff that the extra from Deliverance loaded here and proceeded inside. Inside was that of a VFW hall or Lions Club lodge, it lacked any kind of style. I really don't care about that part per se as long as the beer is good. They had a metal rack with merchandise just laying around in a mess that rivaled a Target at the end of a Black Friday sale. The bar was a disorganized mess too and the beer was listed on a dry erase board. They only had a few and it wasn't clear if they brewed them all or not. I mean the Words "Cider" doesn't give me a lot of information. I got my flight and the beer was ok but nothing special. I learned their beer is actually brewed at St Benedict's Beer Works in Ferdinand Indiana. I don't know how the food is but from a simple atmosphere and organizational standpoint, they could improve this place a lot with just a little work

That ranch sauce tasted homemade! I make really good ranch at home. The only thing I would ask the next time I order it- and I will soon- is to either not cut the quesadilla at all, or only cut it in half. I didn't want to wait for it to get cold and the two middle pieces out of the four were hard to contain. I still ate every last drop. I also had a glass of "Nun Dragon" beer that they make. -YES- ! I liked it VERY much. Not completely sure what the ingredients are, but it had a slight coffee flavor that I really enjoyed. I wish YELP could have had a gathering here. The location is fairly new , and the brew offerings are always challenging in a great way. That said- the food menu is changing not only to include the steak Quesadilla. Hey YELP Elite members, let's go here !
