Wiener Schnitzel
Chad M.

Lots of nostalgia here for me, as my family always loved to make the hour-ish trek here when I was a kid...and I feel like it's held up well to those memories after a recent visit when I was in the area. Atmosphere is fun, it really embraces the German decor (saw a review or too calling it kitschy, in a good way, which I think is a fair description). Service is friendly and attentive (and in the costumed German garb to keep with the themes). Lots of classic German dishes (several schnitzel varieties, brats, spatzel, etc.). I won't say anything I've had over the years blows me away, but haven't had a bad choice either. The Wiener schnitzel I had most recently was tender and tasty, with a perfectly fried batter, and the German fries were nicely crisped on the exterior and beautifully seasoned. Good beer selection (including some brewed for the restaurant), reasonable wine list...love that you can go all out and have your beer in the classic giant boot! Small gift shop as well, some souvenir items as well as some candies and food options.

Very German restaurant and gift shop. Glockenspiel chimes outside 2 minutes after the hour. Salad bar ($6. with entree), with soups and light desserts, then can order from menu for an entree or ample choices on salad bar alone. Entrees include German favorites, non- German choices and sandwiches, sides. My pork chops with kraut was not what I expected. Chops were tough ( smoked but did not mention that on menu), and kraut was sweet. The gift shop has many lovely, cute German products and foods for sale.

We had the giant pretzel with cheese sauce. The pretzel was tasty, but the cheese sauce was pretty bland. We had dinner salads that were really big & fresh. My husband had goolash for dinner & enjoyed it alot. I had shrimp skewers and a loaded baked potato. The shrimp were good, but a bit chewy. The potato was kinda hard to eat bc it had been broiled & the cheese was a bit browned. Even though we were really full, we were encouraged to try the carrot cake. Well, of course, we HAD to get a piece to-go. I had a few bites and it's soft & spicy. The rest will be for tomorrow.

Pros: great food, inviting vibes, very friendly and capable waiting staffs, ample seating, plenty of parking Cons: not much!!! Maybe food can be a tad too salty. This is my favorite restaurant in southern Indiana!

Absolute gem!!! Miss salad bars? They have one loaded with brilliant options. Classics with some special self serve ingredients and premade salads. Alongside, 2 soups homemade soups, bread, and the most delicious apple butter. Use the salad bar as a meal or add on. I suggest you add on because you don't want to miss out on their entrees. All the German favorites +++ Everyone in the family will have multiple choices to make it difficult to decide what to order. We shared the German tenderloin which comes with bacon and cheese. The bun is grilled and buttery with a design branded onto the bun. Such a classy touch! The tenderloin was perfect! The best I have ever had. We opted for a side of German potatoes (fried with onions) and they transported me back in time to Grandma's house. The staff were kind, courteous, and attentive. Prices are worth the quality and quantity of food you receive. Make sure to visit their general store for gifts, accessories, wine, and German imports. Our family will make this a must stop when we are in the Jasper area. A+++ Schnitzelbank! Thank you for a phenomenal experience.

Excellent service from these two!

Enjoyed the tasty hospitality of Schnitzelbank at a recent anniversary party they catered. Excellent service. Over and above!

What a gem in the middle of Indiana! We drove to find a Hilton and wanted a local restaurant that had quality food. Boy did we find it! Amazing menu and decent prices. So worth the drive!!! Only my trip to Germany was better!

Okay, so I'm making my way through a Midwestern town and I stumble across a Swiss looking Chalet.... How could I NOT stop? Giant pretzels? I'd never seen a chilled metal salad plate before! And the service??! Of course, how could it be anything but top notch from someone wearing costume right out of the Bavarian Alps? The ambiance was such that I thought I was in Switzerland for a commercialized second. Such a fun alternate midwestern reality! Oh, and the food was great too! I think I'll be back. In fact I might travel back to Indiana just to eat here again!

Schnitzelbank is worth pulling off the interstate for! A lovely German restaurant with a fun gift shop is a recipe for leaving stuffed and happy. All the German standards are on their menu along with a salad bar that is worth adding to your meal if only for the delicious bread. The food did have its hits and misses but was overall pretty good for its location. The mustard they provided is the best I've ever had and worth driving there for. Pass on the apple strudel - it's actually not good. Service was good and portions were big!

Gerst Haus | Evansville, Indiana…read more While visiting Evansville, Indiana, we decided to have dinner at Gerst Haus. I was particularly interested in experiencing authentic German cuisine, and this restaurant turned out to be an excellent choice! Gerst Haus is located in a historic building dating back to 1890, with very high ceilings, dark wooden booths, ornate architectural details, and walls filled with vintage German memorabilia and historical photographs. The atmosphere adds a lot to the dining experience, and there's plenty to look at! We started with the Sausage Sampler appetizer, featuring an assortment of German sausages, sauerkraut, cold German potato salad, and thick-cut rye bread. The cold potato salad was especially interesting, with sliced potatoes in a sweet-and-tangy, relish-like dressing. It was excellent! I also tried the hot German potato salad, which was equally delicious. For my main course, I ordered the Sauerbraten with spaetzle and green beans. The beef was very tender and flavorful, with a unique combination of seasonings that I really enjoyed. It was served in a bowl with a generous amount of flavorful, broth-like liquid rather than a thick gravy. I enjoyed it so much that I eventually switched from a fork to a spoon to finish it! The spaetzle reminded me of a combination of noodles and dumplings, with good flavor and texture. The green beans were good as well, and the thick-cut rye bread served with many of the dishes was particularly tasty. Service was excellent! Our server was very attentive throughout the meal, making the experience even more enjoyable. I would definitely recommend Gerst Haus to anyone visiting Evansville who is looking for an authentic German dining experience. Between the traditional German dishes, historic surroundings, and excellent service, this was a very enjoyable visit. If my travels bring me back to Evansville, I would definitely return and try another traditional German dish to explore even more of Germany's rich food culture! Gerst Haus 2100 W. What a fantastic little German gem I decided to take a road trip with my Mom as we both love German…read morefood and it was all that and more. The Jaeger schnitzel was hearty tender and delicious with a great crunch on the breading! Red cabbage was seasoned perfectly with just the right amount of sweet and tangy with a couple of Hintz of the spice. I'm not even sure what it was, but it was really awesome. If you get the Spaetzle and you're a traditionalist be sure to ask for it just the buttered version not the saucy white sauce, cheese version. I would definitely make the trip again and recommend it to anyone looking for a good German meal. The menu is a little bit limited, but I'm guessing everything they do is exquisite. Prost!!

The server seemed dazed and confused. We asked him questions but he didn't seem to know anything. We absolutely love German food so we were excited. However, this wasn't really German food. First, how does a German restaurant not have German beer on tap? Then I ordered the schnitzel. It wasn't pounded out correctly and was too thick to be considered schnitzel. The breading had no seasoning. My husband (vegetarian) ordered the veggie melt, which was on the menu, but he was told they no longer make it. He ended up getting a "sides plate." When it arrived, there were 4 of the smallest portions of sides ever. Why not just make spaetzel a main dish? Voila, you have a vegetarian option! My daughter ended up getting a pretzel because the spaetzel she wanted had too many other ingredients in it for her liking. That's on us not the restaurant. Overall, as German restaurant connoisseurs, we were disappointed.

The server said…read morethe kitchen got backed up right as we ordered so it may be a little longer wait, which was fine. We weren't in a rush so we ordered an appetizer, but that came out quickly. The cheese curds were good, but very greasy. We ordered a prime dip with sweet potato fries and a pork sandwich with tots. When we received the food, the pork and tots were cold - like not even warm. I asked about omitting the slaw on the pork sandwich but was told it was on the side. It was not on the side, but was easily removed. The pork tasted like it was store bought and dry but was slathered in sauce to hide that, but didn't do a great job. On a positive note, the prime dip was hot and delicious. Our server was very nice and attentive, as well. While I might go back, I would be hesitant about what to order.

It was 4:30 and staffed looked bored. Yet our server was hard to seek out. No refills without setting the empty glasses on the edge of the table. Wife ordered prime rib dipper. She enjoyed it and it was flavorful. I ordered the 12 oz ribeye medium. It was a few notches past well. I guess I am used to higher quality meats in restaurants. This was a low grade choice (maybe high end select) at best. Dry except for the butter it was covered in to give the perception of juices. Again, waitress was hard to find as wife was near finished by the time she checked. We often tip well. I typically start at 20% and go from there. I did tip huh at mot what I am used to. I can separate the kitchen and the service and will not lessen my tip if it's on the kitchen. It was a miss on both. The manager was apologetic (did not ask to speak to one though) and said she appreciated the feedback. To be fair, the server was not rude or unpleasant, just not there. We frequent this area with extra curricular activities our son is in. Not sure if we will give it another shot.
