This is a neutral review. If I had to rate it on the medical side alone it would be 5 stars. First the good. The medical side and reception at Vision Source are excellent. They are friendly, knowledgeable and make sure you understand all aspects of your eye health and what you can expect for your eye hea in the future. The bad. The "lab" side of the clinic that sells the glasses, while Extremely nice and helpful, get swamped on weekends. My wife and I waited over 35 minutes after our eye exams to be seen. We had other things to do so we left. Went back on Monday and was immediately assisted after my daughters exam. So, key note... maybe avoid going on Saturday if you can help it. read more

I just wanted to take a moment to share how wonderful my experience was at Schertz Vision Source. From the moment I walked in, everyone was so friendly and welcoming. Dr. Gentry was amazing--she really took her time with me and was very thorough throughout the exam, which made me feel confident and well cared for. I also had such a great experience picking out glasses. The staff member who helped me went above and beyond--she even went to the back to find additional frames for me to try on, which I really appreciated. That extra effort made the whole process so much easier and enjoyable. Overall, it was such a positive experience from start to finish. Had some glasses that had tint on them, polycarbonate lenses. All of the tint faded came off within a year. When I took them to get re-tinted, they said they couldn't do it because it's been over a year. One lady who works there told me that they were using a lab that they quit using because they having defective products and that was the lab they used to make my lenses. Of course, the office manager denied that she said that .Office manager said since it was over six months that there was nothing they could do for 400$ pair of glasses. She said she would give me a $40 credit on my account for what the tint cost.. never was I told that polycarbonate lenses could have the tent fade, something that they should probably tell their customers. you could tell when you talk to the manager that her mind was made up and no matter what you said she was not going to change it. I would not recommend Dr. Barnes. My daughter had PRK and Dr. Barnes was her follow up. She refused to stay after hours to help her out with pain. Also, Dr. Barnes made a typo on my eyeglass prescription and my glasses did not work. She did not apologize. read more

Went in for an eye exam and to renew my contacts. When I went in I asked before hand what the copayment was and if they were going to charge for contact exam . She said to ask them when I got my exam . Before I put the contacts in I asked if they were going to charge for an exam. she said she didn't know and to ask the front desk . So when I went to go pay I was very upset she told me it was going to be 123$ I told her I wasn't expecting to pay for the contact exam no one told me how much it was going to be when I asked . I feel so stupid I just payed after I told her I wasn't expecting to pay that much . How come no one was able to answer my question of how much it was going to be until I had to pay ? There is a blonde staff member who presented similar to an office manager. Whatever her job role, she was the overall determining factor for the loss of our sale. The best way I can describe the interaction between us was overly excitable, and presumptively defensive through the use of immediate accusations towards her client. Her knee jerk response, in which she even dramatically pushed herself back from the table, came off as having a cynical mindset when her response was to accuse her client of insurance fraud. It begged the question of WHY was her first reaction to accuse instead of seeking to understand a client's situation? This employee needs to be reminded that her clients are not the subject matter experts in her line of business, she is. Just because a client asks to pay for things in a way that cannot be done, doesn't mean there aren't alternative solutions that could have been presented by her. For example: when I asked to run the frames under my spouse's insurance, knowing he still has a frame credit for the year, that doesn't automatically mean I was trying to commit insurance fraud. His transaction to purchase the frames was independent of my purchase of lenses. The frames were intended to be a gift as I typically reuse my same frames year after year and change out my lenses. It means that I did not understand in order for regular frames to be paid out through insurance, they require prescription lenses to be purchased with the frames. Instead of this employee attempting to shame me by LOUDLY and excitably refusing sale with the accusations of insurance fraud, for the whole office to hear, she could have kindly explained further why that could not be done. I even out right asked her, after she performed for the entire office by shoving herself away from the table, if she was refusing to even simply sell the frames to my spouse and she very eagerly replied, "YES!" Whereas she could have offered some payment options that were available, like paying for the frames outright or running them through my insurance. She could have asked us what were we aiming to accomplish. Maybe we needed to pay for the frames using his credit card and the lenses under my FSA card. There are so many variables that should have been aimed to be understood. Her very emotional reaction was over the top and unnecessary. However, thanks to her lack of professionalism, emotional control, and basic business acumen, she challenged my perception that their establishment was the only provider in town for those specific frames. My frame selection of choice was listed at Vision Source for the extravagant price of $266 while another competitor sells the exact same frame for $99 out the door prior to insurance or prescription lenses. I was even able to have my lenses fabricated and installed by that same provider. So, thank you for inspiring me to shop around. I actually saved so much money and was able to afford 2 of the 3 frames I liked by looking elsewhere. Very happy the door closed at Vision Source. I almost significantly overpaid for frames! read more

Went in for an annual eye exam. Wasn't sure if I wanted to use my insurance towards contacts or glasses but needed contact lenses currently so I paid an out of pocket cost. Within 24 I called back stating that I wanted to use my insurance toward my contact lenses and asked to have the previous claim submitted to insurance along with purchasing another box through insurance. I was told "per their policy" (which is not written anywhere in the facility nor on any paperwork I signed) that they would not backdate me service from one day ago to submit to my insurance despite knowing I am active and covered. I confirmed with my insurance company they the facility could in fact back date the claim and they said "yes", the manager STILL refused to submit the claim quoting a policy she seeming pulled out of her a**. I tried to return the unopened box of contact and repurchase through my insurance and she refused to do that as well, again quoting a made up policy written no where in the facility or expressed when checking out. The front office staff was unhelpful in every way and I am now having to submit the claim on my own for reimbursement. Don't waste your time here read more

The entire place is GREAT until you deal with office manager! How rude and condescending can a person you put in charge of your office be! Tell me you dont do your job without telling me , so the person to deal with situations beyond the PATIENTS CONTROL, is to send in the office bulldog and that is the arrogant office manager who says patient billing is a courtesy to us the patients ??? I mean since I've been alive it's literally the job of the office , in particular you knew last yr at my annual exam you have ID scanned and in your file (as stated by ms. Arrogant herself) but it was not verified hmmmmmm so then as you the patient start questioning Ms Arrogant comes at you in the condescending mmmmm "so assuming " I said , wow so very unprofessional for you to be so rude! And Ms Arrogant says I'm not gonna argue with you, ummm yeah I get it you have no sense with the crap you are trying to blame me for not verifying something when it's literally probably the only thing you are supposed to do here, but it's ok Ms.Arrogant is offering me a courtesy one time (hahahah) of verifying that insurance. I love Vision Source. Not having you eyes dilated and having them digitally mapped is wonderful. They are efficient and friendly. I love Dr. Barnes. She is caring and spends time with you, relating on a personal level. I highly recommend Vision Source for quality eye care. Even though I moved to another county, I was back here today for my annual vision exam. As usual the staff was great. I see Dr. Buttlar and she's always been good about catching small changes in my vision. The rest of the staff is friendly and efficient. It's nice to see the same people there each year because I know they know how to do their jobs well. I appreciate that. I'm sure all of the opticians are great but I always see Denise when it's time to select frames. She always helps me find just the right ones. There are other Vision Source locations, one that's even closer to my home, but I'll continue to go here. read more

Paid out of pocket for an eye exam to compare to exam provided by another Optometrist was correct prior to getting glasses made. The Dr. at Schertz Vision Source stated that her readings were different and the other place was wrong and if there were issues with any glasses made they would perform another eye test. When I called I was told to drive 60 miles to drop off the glasses to get checked before they would look at the schedule to see if I could make another appointment. They would not make an appointment for an exam and check the glasses at the same time to save me time from work and expense. This company has done this before by rushing through an eye exam and pushing you out the door without consideration to whether or not the prescription is correct. I would recommend passing this place up. read more

Dr. Billy Nowlin is amazing!!!! He is very acknowledgeable and have outstanding customer service. He really cares about his patients and listens to all concerns. Has an eye infection and he took care of it right away. Did not had to go for a second time for treatment as he gave me the right treatment. Had a female doctor once and did not like her. I guess she does not have as much experience as Dr. Nowlin. She seemed to be rushing. Frost desk needs to work a little on customer service and being nice to people. Guys that works with you to order the eye glasses and contacts are amazing and know a lot. We're very helpful every time my family and I had gone there even during the pandemic. read more

I want to start off by saying the front of the house and the medical staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. However, the sales staff when purchasing glasses are very business like and not very friendly. Specially the supervisor Sydney. I purchased my prescription Oakley Sunglasses from them and opted for the scratch resistant lenses. I came back before my one year warranty expired and filed a claim because both lenses had scratches on them. My sunglasses came back after a week with new lenses. Two days later after wearing my sunglasses with new lenses, I noticed that one of the lenses had two scratches on them. I took them back to Vision Source and was told by Sydney that I should have purchased better lenses because they came with only an antireflective coating and scratch resistant lens?! Sydney was rude and showed no empathy with my issue with the scratches on my sunglasses. Never buying anything from them again! read more

Unpleasant staff at every level at this office! I was frankly shocked when I was asked by Dr. Michelle Buttlar at Schertz vision source, to wait outside, while my child (a minor) stayed in the back during her exam. Since when is it appropriate to leave your minor unsupervised? No common sense or professional behavior from Dr. Butlar. They also made a charge without informing me or seeking approval first. One of the receptionists, Connie, was extremely impolite, as she continued to look at her computer screen when I expressed that customers should be notified of those "services" and charges beforehand. Need contacts? Not only will they charge you a "fitting fee", you will also be charged $20 for them to show you how to wear them. I completely agree with the opinions of other dissatisfied patients, and would not recommend this business to anyone. read more

My wife and I switched from TSO in Schertz to Dr. Barnes. She was more thorough in examining us and provide smart alternatives to my wife's contacts. We both felt the eye exam prescription was much better than TSO. Plus, we will get to see Dr. Barnes with each appointment. At TSO, you see a different doctor each time. The staff is more attentive to details here than at TSO. We are glad we switched. read more

Do not take your children here. My toddler needed a check up but did not want to cooperate because she was spooked about them looking into her eyes and I still got charged $42!!!! Spent maybe 5 full mins with Dr and no equipment was even used. It's bad enough that as parents you are worried about your child's vision, but getting charged for them NOT to give you any answers is ridiculous!!! I can't control if my kid is scared. I'm a patient of Dr. Barnes at Schertz Vision Source and my contact lens prescription expired June 1, 2020. I'm considered high risk for COVID 19 exposure and have been advised not to go to any facility. Dr. Barnes would not approve an extension of my prescription until the new year when hopefully I could safely visit in person. So now I'm out of contacts and options. They refused to have a visit done over the phone or via Zoom. I have been wearing the same prescription lens for over 10 years with absolutely no issues. I am going to a different eye doctor, one that is actually is concerned about patient health. This place is only concerned about their money. read more

Schertz Vision Source is a great place to go for vision services. The equipment is high tech which makes the testing part of the visit extremely easy. Dr.Buttlar has done a great job of catching small changes in my vision that lead to some problems that I thought I'd just have to deal with. My husband and I have been going to Schertz Vision Source for a number of years and have always had positive experiences. We have found the entire staff to be friendly and welcoming, all the while being professional. Upon entering the office, we have always been greeted kindly and have never waited past our appointment time to be seen. We have never felt rushed during our examinations, and the doctors have treated us with care and kindness. They also take time to explain to us our eyesight conditions and answer any questions we may have. Schertz Vision Source as a lot of State of the Art equipment, which gives us confidence in our examinations. We do not purchase our glasses/contact lenses from Schertz Vision Source, but have often seen other patients as they try on glasses or get fitted for their new glasses. The employees helping them have appeared to be patient and helpful. To say the least, we have been extremely pleased with Schertz Vision Source. read more

A couple of weeks ago I went to Schertz Vision Source for new glasses. I made sure I explained to Dr. Debra Barnes that my eyes are very sensitive to light and that I wanted lens that would protect my eyes from strong light without having to wear sunglasses over my regular glasses. Also I was told that the the option I decided on would increase the strength that my exam indicated I needed. Also there would be a computer lens included as part of the glasses. My glasses cost me $1,019.00, I have worn them for several weeks and they are not as Vision Source indicated they would be. The bright light still hurts my eyes and I have to wear sunglasses over them to be able to cope with sunny days. The strength of my lens don't fit my vision any better than the pair I had before purchasing new ones. The computer lens absolutely do not help. I purchase some glasses with computer lens from the drug store that work better than the Vision Source glasses. Today I returned to Vision Source and discussed the situation with my glasses not being as I was told they would be. Finally I ask for a refund and was then told that there is a 35% restocking fee. STRANGE THAT I WASN'T TOLD THAT BEFORE I PAID $1,019.00 FOR THESE GLASSES! They offered to redo my glasses but I have lost confidence in Schertz Vision Source. I am 77 years old and saved for 3 years to be able to purchase better glasses than the ones I had. The glasses I was promised has not been provided! I am so disappointed in Schertz Vision Source and advise potential customers to consider my comments before making an appointment. read more

Apparently paying $328.00 just for an eye exam does not cover also being able to get your full prescription information to be able to have glasses made somewhere else. Told the check in we were planning on having glasses made elsewhere and found out upon trying to send the prescription to the other company the pd number has to also be included. Called Schertz vision source to be told that was an additional fee that was not offered despite knowing we were having glasses made somewhere else. Unbelievable. read more

Took my 12 year old daughter for her annual check up and to get her fitted for contacts. The doctor was wonderful. But unfortunately, I was not happy with their staff. As we waited to get my daughter fitted for contacts , the young teen ahead of us was being assisted by a staff member who was trying to place the contact in her eye. I was shocked by how impatient and rude the staff member was as she kept dropping the contact on the table than trying to place the contact in her eye. After several failed attempts, the teen started to cry. My daughter got really uncomfortable and changed her mind. We left without getting contacts. Now I see why they want us parents to wait in the waiting room so we don't see their bad behavior. read more

Excellent doctors. Dr. Buttlar has been seeing my daughter for 12 years and I would recommend her to anyone. That's where the service and professionalism stops. Take your prescriptions elsewhere to be fitted for glasses. The eyeglass staff are unprofessional, curt, rude, and accusatory all the while having a smirk on their face. They will accuse other service members of not servicing your glasses correctly and insist that you are the problem and there "is no way" an incorrect fitting or faulty product could be the issue. Their responses are canned phrases that leave you with the responsibility of wearing the glasses for a few days, only having to come back to endure the same process visit after visit. read more

Both Doctors are great. I have only the best to say about them. The support staff in my opinion is enough for me to give a poor rating. In April of this year, my husband and I both went in for exams and purchased contacts. They gave my husband the wrong kind of samples, luckily the doctor caught it when she asked if he had the rest of his samples and he had none. We got the correct ones, he tried them on and left. Samples worked out, so I called in a few days later and requested they move forward with the order. When I called to check on them I was told they forgot to order them, so we lost a few days. When when I called in again to check if they had come in, they said they still hadn't ordered them yet because I hadn't paid for them. I was a bit irritated, because they had already forgotten to order them but never asked me to pay for them any of the times I called, so I made a trip to the office and paid. I had already wasted a lot of time so I asked if this was everything and we were sure that everything was going to get ordered and was told everything was good. Got a call they were ready, made a trip to the office and they only ordered mine and not my husbands. Zero apologies from the staff, but lots of excuses (some even placing the blame on me) and lots of wasted time for me in the way of phone calls and trips to their office including another trip to pick his contacts up once they finally came in. Recently, my son's school called saying he may need glasses, so I gave them another shot. They already had all my insurance information, etc, so it seemed logical to go in and I had hoped that the earlier experience was a one time issue. Again, the doc was amazing. The lady who helped him pick out his frames was also great. I even decided to purchase a pair of glasses for me while I was there. I left feeling happy that I had given them a second try. Since my insurance required glasses to be sent out to their lab, my son's glasses were expected to take longer than mine (I was paying out of pocket for mine so they could make mine in house). His appointment was on Thursday. Monday, I received a call that my son's glasses were back from the insurance lab. I made the trip to the office to pick them up. While I was there, I inquired about mine since I was told they would actually be ready first. I was told that one of the lenses needed to be ordered and it should be ready on Tuesday. No call on Tuesday. No call on Wednesday. I called at the end of the day on Wednesday and they weren't ready. No call on Thursday, so I called and was told they were not ready yet because the lenses had to be ordered. I reminded them that they had already told me that on Monday and again on Wednesday. When I asked if it was actually ordered or if it was forgotten I was told there was a problem with one of the lenses and it had to be re-ordered and should take a day or two. I would have been okay with the delay had they communicated it with me, but they just gave me the standard "we had to order it" explanation and acted irritated that I asked them to explain. Today is Friday, still no phone call, so I called for status and was told they should be ready on Monday - full week later than the glasses that had to be sent out to a lab to be made. When I told her I was ready to cancel because I've yet to receive a single phone call about any delays and was getting frustrated she swiftly told me that she said a day or two and it had only been one day and was very rude. Save yourself the headache. My $275 glasses are still not ready. read more

Dr. Nowlin was awesome as well as staff. A very thorough exam. Spent the extra money for the eye picture as I despise getting my eyes dilated, worth every penny! Before I leave my review, I'd like to point out that half of the reviews for this business are "not recommended". What do they all have in common? They are poor reviews. Having said that, my experience was great with Dr. Barnes (hence, 2 starts). However, it was Dr. Buttlar, and the extremely rude staff (Connie, front desk), who made me take my business elsewhere.
