My daughter grabbed two sandwiches from there for a picnic we had out in the woods. They were delicious. I had the roast beef she had the turkey. The sourdough rolls they were made with were amazing. Frustrated!!!!! The food is good but I'm tempted to just give up. When I order food with avocado, it comes with barely any on it at all. Every time, I point out how little it has on the sandwich. The sandwich is always ordered by paying extra for the half an avocado and I never get it. Forget ordering to go because you never get what you pay for. This last time I ordered a veggie sandwich and it had literally one slice of avocado on it. Very disappointed. The quality of the food is good but the descriptions of what you get and what you actually get are not good . Frustrating and subpar. read more

Husband and I had lunch. I had the apple walnut feta cheese salad with chicken. Mine was delicious after I got all the big pieces cut up. Husband had the daily special combo, which was a warm turkey sandwich with a salad on a hand crafted bun. He said it was great! To order you go to the counter, pay, and they bring it out to your table. They have a wide variety of homemade bakery items - sweets, breads, cakes & pies. We always go to the downtown location and order takeout online. I love their sandwiches a wraps but it seems to be getting more inconsistent. Today I ordered the Cobb wrap with vinegar and oil and when we picked it up it was a wait of 20 minutes past the pickup time. We went to the park to eat and the paper it was wrapped in was dripping in oil. The bag had a puddle of oil in the bottom and my hand was covered in oil by the time I unwrapped it. It was a mess. Almost impossible to eat and never tasted a bit of vinegar. I ended up throwing it away. Very disappointing. I'm not sure we will be going back again. Schatt's, I really want to like you, but while the food usually tastes good, the inconsistency of quality and service decreases my satisfaction and prevents me from coming in more often. Nothing is ever quite perfect with the salads. Usually it's a problem with the avocado being subpar, and this time I have a rotten tomato and a lettuce core along with some rusty lettuce in my Cobb Salad. I feel like there's never a time when I'm not pulling something I don't want to eat out of the food. Sometimes the pastries and cakes are great and other times they're not. I never really know what I'm going to get when I order. I have mixed feelings about the service, because I know the owner Zach, is notorious for giving people with not so perfect records or people who have never had jobs a chance. This is admirable, unfortunately, that does mean the service isn't always the best. Overall, it's an okay place to go. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's great, and sometimes it's not quite hitting the mark. I will say that today 8/10/24 at about noon, the service at the Friedman's location was very nice, but I are my salad very carefully, as there were bits I didn't want in there. read more

We have been to the Schat's Bakeries in Bishop and to both locations in Ukiah. We love their products. The bakers who work there are great. This review however is specific to the store in the Friedman's Hardware Store. The service at this location is bad. There is no other way to say it. We have visited four times over a period of two years and every time, we have had a negative experience. I ordered coffee twice. Both times the urn was empty so I agreed to wait. Big mistake! They brewed the coffee and apparently held my cup under the urn as it first poured out, no doubt trying to hurry things along. It was bitter and undrinkable. The other two times they got our order wrong. We ordered cheese bread and they attempted to substitute that with the jalapeño cheese without saying anything. They also got the quantities wrong. While we like the products the people behind that counter leave a lot to be desired. read more

Here we go again with Schat's at Friedman's Brothers. Went there with my wife for lunch, she ordered soup and I ordered a salad. My wife got her order within five minutes. I sat there for 15 minutes watching her eat her lunch while I waited. I finally went up and said beings my wife is done could I have my salad to go, and they couldn't find my order. Deducted stars because one of the employees is a bit....off. She was flirtatiously dancing around and making googly eyes with a Friedman employee. I stood there quietly with my very patient 4 year old until I finally interjected and she whipped her head around in annoyance -- like WE were bothering her. I didn't mean to break up her cringe worthy interaction with this man, but I just want to order, pay, and leave. I was about to order another item but she snapped: "are you ready?!" She quickly hands me my change (without counting) then proceeds to provide a complimentary back scratch to said employee plus another female employee that decided to join in on the fun. WHY???!?!? My baked good was absolutely delicious. A yummy combination of coconut, walnuts, dipped in chocolate...but then I look up and my appetite was ruined....I witness more back scratching with toussling of her friends long, curly grey hair...Barf!! Lady, you work in the food industry. Please don't confuse Schat's for a massage parlor or hair salon. The other Schat's employees looked on and responded with a combination of nervous laughter and wide eyed horror. After her interaction she then shouts: "hope this won't fall under the sexual harrassment code..!" I looked on to see if she was going to head over to wash her hands or douse herself in a bottle of liquid purrell (I would have let this whole thing go). NOPE. She then begins to fill paper napkins into a dispenser. So in the last 10 minutes, you have touched money, two separate people, and then proceed on with your duties. **ALL WITHOUT GLOVES OR WASHING HANDS.** We couldn't get out of there fast enough. Thank GD my treat was sealed in plastic to avoid contamination. I appreciate the girls wearing a hat and gloves while organizing the baked goods. This "lady" had neither. The staff at the Friedman's Schat's Restaurant are cheerful and helpful. The menu is filled with so many delicious options. My personal fav is the Foreman Sandwich served on whole grain bread. Always love the baked goods but today I was wanting a breakfast burrito. I was very disappointed that there was no seasoning flavor in the burrito . It was basically put potato's, peppers, spinach and potato's and not salt or pepper them . So I'm thinking okay no problem I have the salsa . Previously I've had poor service at this location. But this was the worst. When I Saw no one was waiting to order anything, I grabbed a bag of day old rolls and went and stood in front of the register to pay. The Drink gal didn't look up or acknowledge me. Counter gal was talking to gal in dining area. So I wait!!! My husband has now picked up seven items in the hardware store and is standing in line to pay across the way. I am still standing directly in front of the Schat's register.. waiting!!! She now sees someone come up to the display case followed immediately by about 6 others. The counter gal walks right past me, over to the counter and takes an order from someone who just walked up. . It was someone I know and I was there way before her... waiting to pay. The counter gal then Comes to ring my friend up, right in front of me and I ask to pay and was told I had 'to go to the end of the line' .....really!!!!! Why,?!?! because she wouldn't know who was next... let's see, I was here before any of them, patiently waiting to pay and be on my way. I'm still waiting after my husband has shopped, In my boredom I had time to pull Out exact change long before she walked past me to wait on others. We pick up items weekly from this location... it's usually my husband.. i am so disappointed and feel very disrespected . First I need to say that me and the company I work for LOVE the Schats menu!! We are in there almost every day ordering personal lunches AND corporate lunches. The ladies that take our orders are so polite and helpful Thank you!! OK so why three stars, the last two times I have been in to the Friedman's location to pick up large orders for the corporation I have been met by a very rude older woman with short hair who barks at you that she can't hear, then acts like it is a HUGE bother for her, very off putting. Then tonight I'm in for coffee and a cookie - I'm very polite and even try making a joke. Now mind you I just had a stroke and tho I am functioning I am a bit diminished so I do my best to talk fast and as loud as I can. The complaint I have is about the kid that waited on me, did not get my coffee anywhere near consumable and snapped at me when I asked about the foam‍ like I mentioned a few of the ladies are amazing and I know good help is hard to find. On another Friedman's excursion I decided to give Schat's another try as I reached a high hunger level. I walked up and noticed the basket of muffins in the glass case. The woman said they were all priced differently and I opted for a poppyseed and almond, my fave. Thankfully it was quite moist and filled with poppyseeds! My dining companion and I were sent here by some knowing locals for a sandwich on my lunch break and DAYYYMM those were some big ass sandwiches. Apparently ordering the large sandwich = two sandwiches. Yes, it's true, so just get a large and have lunch for the both of ya. The organic bread is pretty orgasmic as is the meat which is obviously organic as well. The sandwich had me at hello, if you know what I mean. I had the tri tip sando with swiss on organic mult-grain, meooow. Notes: The chick working at the register is really pissed, but not pissed like a SF Coffee shop employee so I was like, bring it biatch. You know? I WANT to love this place. The sandwich options are among the best available -- large sizes and lots of good ingredients. The baked goods are pretty good, too, but I wouldn't say sweets are their strength. Their bread is very good. However, I've gotten used to, as Jason C. writes, "some kind of wrong" in my order there. There has been some type of screw-up* the last several times I've ordered something at the Friedman's Schat's. Today, over our sandwiches, several friends and I were discussing this and it turns out there are many people that know this to be true; Schat's will mess up your order. It's too bad their customer service (lots of turnover in staff!) can't keep up with the yummy items their menu offers. When things go right, a Greenhouse with added pastrami is my go-to. I show up at designated time, pay and was ready for another great experience. Unwrap sandwiches and two out of three were completely wrong. Just meat and cheese and NOTHING else. So frustrating. The one time I make an effort to order ahead and she doesn't even bother to double-check the order it correct. This is what happens when you hire children. Oh how things have changed in ukiah. Growing up I loved schat's so on a recent visit I insisted my son try one of their amazing deli sandwiches. Roast beef is dry and bland. The veggies were not overflowing like before, lettuce did not even cover my whole sandwich. Best part of our lunch was the bag of chips. Won't be back on my next visit to town, so sad . read more

Went in for a quick snack and ordered a lemon bar. It was DISGUSTING. The custard was gummy and the crust dry and flavorless.

This is my favorite part of driving through Ukiah. They have huge portions of fresh sandwiches or salads. Sandwiches are made on their amazing home made bread. Not easy to eat on the go, but the soups are equally as good. It's hard to find a quality deli off the 101 when the most popular places to eat are fast food. Visiting the other day, I remembered why I used to come here all the time when I worked in Ukiah. Good soup, great sandwiches and breads, amazing macaroons and bear claws, Peet's Coffee. Schat's, why don't you have a Lakeport location? Edited to add: Oh, this is the Friedman Bros. location. Well, that one's good too. I used to eat there all the time when I worked at K-Wine. I grew up in Bishop, CA and remember when Schat's took over the local bakery and the recipe for Sheepherders Bread and Squaw Bread. They added the Swedish twist. I was so happy to see the two stores in Ukiah. The down town store is more quaint and busier. However, the store in Friedman's is handy. Both stores often run out of product early. The Sheepherders Bread I bought recently was not the original. It's okay but not as moist. The place is clean and comfortable. The staff needs more training and supervision.
