    Crab cake sandwich and fries
    Kim V.

Takeout Review: I always drive by this place, so I decided to check it out finally. Coming from Rhode Island, I love my fresh seafood. The parking lot was spacious and always packed. The restaurant is nautical themed and it's not a fancy place but definitely a homey place. The service was great with ordering and picking up takeout. The prices were a little higher for the dinner options; I understand the situation, due to inflation and fresh seafood is usually more pricey. For starters, I had to try out their thick and creamy New England clam chowder; it was not the best I've ever had but it was a 3.5/5. My main meal was the crab cake sandwich and fries; it came with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and spicy delta tarter sauce. The crab cake was deep fried and perfectly crunchy. The fries were one of the best takeout fries I've had, it's was super crispy even after picking it up and driving home with it. Overall, my family and I enjoyed our meals!

It had been many years since we had last visited the Saybrook Fish House in Clinton so we thought we would try it again for lunch today. The clam chowder was a bit over thickened, though was passable I would give it a grade of C. The classic fish sandwich came with cheese on it, which may be a bit unusual, but was fairly good. The whole belly fried clams were pretty good but for $35 was not a reason to come back. Overall, I would say that for a $64 lunch with a $10 tip. It was pricey and not positively memorable. The service was good in a restaurant that was not terribly busy at 1:30 in the afternoon on a Sunday.

While in Canton, the five of us were pretty hungry. We stopped at the Saybrook Fish House for a dinner. If it's not obvious by the name, on what type of food they specialize in here, it'll be obvious as soon as you step inside, this place is fully decorated with fish everywhere. Unfortunately some of the fish that's on the walls, you wouldn't find in the menu. I started with the Chowder, we got a serving of escargot to share. I'm not a fan, so I didn't have any. The Chowder was very good, it was creamy, and rich, truly tasty and filling on a cold February evening. At the Saybrook Fish House, they offer complimentary rolls and butter, and a very large salad. This salad was very fresh and delicious. I didn't know we would be getting it, keep in mind when making your selection. I got the crab cake sandwich. Others in my party got the scallops and the cod. My crab cake was very tender and flavorful. It came with fries and pickles on the side. It was too much for me, I had to take some home for the next day. Overall, we had a very pleasant dining experience at The Saybrook Fish House. If you're into sea food I'd encourage you to stop by, and if you're not they also have other options.

Really love this place- on outskirts of town but great quality and service. Rustic/fish atmosphere like on a boat and very fast service. Extreme large portion sizes as we started off with garlic shrimp and Cole slaw, a shared salad (huge!!!), bread, and then finally our entrees. I buoyed salmon, seafood soup, and calamari. Really loved all of it as seafood was fresh and good quality. Defs recommend for seafood lovers as good price and really good

Some places are gourmet and hip. This place is not. But don't let that dissuade you from coming. In fact, on a recent Saturday night, the parking lot was nearly full when we arrived at 7:15. (Dinner before 7 is prime dinner hour here). The place is not full of twenty-something's. It's a rather older crowd. But they know what they are getting here and, like me, are more than happy about it. We got a table; paper covering the table. Which is good because you can get kinda messy. Service was terrific. We had a very attentive server who met every need and filled every water glass (multiple times, yay!). We started with escargot and mozzarella sticks. The sticks are more like logs and I worried if it wouldn't be warm in the middle. I should've have worried. These were legit mozzarella sticks with lots of flavor and gooey cheese. The marinara sauce is solid without being too spicy or garlicky. We then got the house salad. Never disappoints. Big portion, fresh ingredients and great dressings. For main courses, my dining companions really enjoyed their lobster rolls and their scallops with fries. That's probably the way to go. Never been disappointed with their fried fish. I ended up getting an Alaskan cod topped with mushroom. It wasn't my favorite fish meal of the year but it's solid and it's more that I wanted something a little more substantial. The mixed vegetables that I got with it were well seasoned and cooked just right. Desserts were a big hit too. The triple chocolate mousse was too good to pass up but the lemon cake was also a bit hit too. Overall, every time we come here we are happy with our meal. Reasonable prices, good service. A lot of other restaurants could learn a lot from a place like this. It may never win awards or draw the cool crowd. But it has a good following and those who know, go.

Coming from Kentucky, fresh New England seafood is a true delicacy, and a lively engagement with the server is a must when eating out. The folks here catered to us. They showed a genuine concern for us out of staters. It was intrusive, but refreshingly engaging. We were intent on getting lobster rolls, and the lobster rolls were amazing. Eating here was one of the highlights of my trip. We made some memories in this trip and going to this restaurant was near the top of the list. When I'm back in this area, we'll definitely visit again.

Good Friends, Great Food, and Historic Charm!…read more The Village at Buckingham Ladies Lunch Bunch met on July 3 for our favorite monthly first-Friday tradition! We gathered at the wonderful Lisa's Crown & Hammer in Collinsville, a charming riverfront village just a few miles from our neighborhood. What a treat to meet our delightful new neighbor from Cavendish- Kendra Z! This popular restaurant and pub operates out of the historic 1850s railroad freight station of the Collins Axe Company. It sits beautifully amidst repurposed brick factory buildings that now house quaint antique shops, art galleries, and boutiques. Inside, you step back in time with a cozy, industrial-chic setting complete with exposed brick walls, timber wood beams, and a fireplace patio for the cooler months. It is the perfect place to begin or end a walk along the scenic Farmington River, utilizing the Rails-to-Trails path. ‍‍ The food from their scratch kitchen never disappoints! They focus on elevated, comfort pub grub using plenty of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. A huge shoutout to our wonderful waitress (pictured!) who gave us truly excellent service! Our Top Crown & Hammer Recommendations: * The Towering Truffle Burger or Lisa's Amazing Crown Sliders * The Vermonter - Packed with turkey, cheddar, apple slices, and bacon * Perfectly cooked Fish Tacos or a classic Reuben Sandwich * Mediterranean Salmon Salad with lemon dressing (a personal favorite!) * Crispy Cauliflower, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Truffle Parm Fries * A refreshing glass of Citizen Cider to wash it all down! Our lunch bunch is already counting down the days until we return in October to try Lisa's new fall menu in the cozy fireplace room! If you love a quintessential New England village that is walkable, historic, and brimming with charm, you have to check out this spot!

What's behind the Green Door?…read more Well, I remember a song from my childhood called "Green Door" -it had a honky-tonk piano sound and I kind of remember it got some radio play in the early '60s. I also remember there was a porno movie named "Behind the Green Door". It was a big deal in 1972 and "starred" Marilyn Chambers -the Ivory Snow girl. Fast Forward to today. What's Behind the Green Door up in Collinsville, CT? A very nice restaurant known as the Green Door Restaurant. It's the house restaurant at Bridge Street Live - a music and entertainment venue on the Farmington River in the funky little town of Collinsville. We had dinner at the Green Door tonight and had a pretty favorable experience. We sat outside on the deck and enjoyed a pretty view of the River and enjoyed a singer and his acoustic guitar. So what kind of food might one find behind their Green Door? The menu had seven appetizers ranging from a $6 soup to an $18 Charcuterie Board, three salads ranging from $10 to $14 with a protein add-on between $8-$10 more, five sandwiches with a side for $13 or $14, six personal pizzas ($10-$15), and eight entrees ranging from $14 - $34. We shared a Hummus platter ($10) served with pita wedges, grape tomatoes, carrot and celery sticks, and broccoli florets. The hummus with Roasted Red Pepper was very good, the veggies were cold and crisp, and the pita bread was soft and warm. Not a bad value for ten bucks, but the actual amount of hummus wasn't very generous. I ordered one of the entrees - a Seared Sesame Ahi Tuna Bowl for $18. It was a big serving of six tuna slices with red quinoa & buckwheat, maybe two dozen crispy chickpeas, shaved carrots, sliced avocado, and arugula with a herb lemon dressing. The dish tasted great and was a pretty good value, considering the large serving. We also ordered a Reuben Sandwich ($14) of shaved corned beef, Thousand Island dressing, house made sauerkraut, and Fontina cheese, on Marbled Rye. The sandwich tasted great (especially the bread) but the weak link was the quantity of corned beef - not nearly enough. My Diet Coke $3 and that price speaks for itself -it was high. Our modest dinner ran around $47 (after tax) and I didn't really feel our overall value was there. Yes, the view was nice, the service was friendly, and the menu was varied. If you're attending a show at Bridge Street, it does make a lot of sense to eat here as a convenience. Otherwise, I'm not really convinced to go through that Green Door again.
