This was a special occasion for us, our very first night without our 8 year old who hates fish, so we headed for the Saybrook Fish House. We had steamed clams for an appetizer. They were good and our server Matt was on top of things even though it was a busy Saturday night. My wife had the lobster roll and said it was buttery and tender, but I can't comment since she wouldn't share it with me. I had the King Crab special, and as I commented to our server, I have paid a lot more ($55) for a lot less (4 legs) that were meaty and great texture you only get with King Crab. We left very happy. Tasty food, but their options really shine with their fried fare. Fried fish, clams, scallops... if that's what you're in the mood for, you can't go wrong. As soon as you start to stray into other dishes, the restaurant starts to lose its appeal. A buffalo chicken wrap was drowning in sauce. My lobster roll, which I came here specifically for based on other reviews, arrived at the table and I started laughing my head off. The bun was maybe at best 2/3 the size of a hot dog bun and had probably half a chicken lobster worth of lobster... it at that. I doubt it even reached 4oz, and with a side of fries, market price was $30. I felt completely ripped off. I've gone to Abbots at the shore of the Sound, and their roll cost the same but was about double the contents and I didn't leave hungry. $30 and I was lucky that I ordered an appetizer to fill in the gap in my stomach. Indoors is dark and not really inviting, but the patio was quite nice. Initially one server was covering half a dozen tables so service was quite slow, but when a couple others showed up to take the slack, things started moving for everyone. Takeout Review: I always drive by this place, so I decided to check it out finally. Coming from Rhode Island, I love my fresh seafood. The parking lot was spacious and always packed. The restaurant is nautical themed and it's not a fancy place but definitely a homey place. The service was great with ordering and picking up takeout. The prices were a little higher for the dinner options; I understand the situation, due to inflation and fresh seafood is usually more pricey. For starters, I had to try out their thick and creamy New England clam chowder; it was not the best I've ever had but it was a 3.5/5. My main meal was the crab cake sandwich and fries; it came with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and spicy delta tarter sauce. The crab cake was deep fried and perfectly crunchy. The fries were one of the best takeout fries I've had, it's was super crispy even after picking it up and driving home with it. Overall, my family and I enjoyed our meals! read more

It had been many years since we had last visited the Saybrook Fish House in Clinton so we thought we would try it again for lunch today. The clam chowder was a bit over thickened, though was passable I would give it a grade of C. The classic fish sandwich came with cheese on it, which may be a bit unusual, but was fairly good. The whole belly fried clams were pretty good but for $35 was not a reason to come back. Overall, I would say that for a $64 lunch with a $10 tip. It was pricey and not positively memorable. Ive been coming here for 35 years . I live 10 minutes away.I love this place but it's changed very much these last few years. First they got rid of the large horse shoe shaped bar which was a great place to hang out and visit with friends and people watch. Now they've gotten rid of the raw bar. Whoever the chef is consistently over cooks the fried clams and fish . The batter is over cooked and tasteless . I had calamari here over the weekend and it was awful. Over cooked & soggy , more fried peppers than calamari. It was the saddest plate of calamari that I've ever had. The breading was soggy & tasted like they hadn't changed the oil in their fryer for quite some time. I wish management would take the staff to Lenny & Joes in Westbrook and show them what fried seafood is supposed to taste like. Every time we drive the hour drive to Lenny and Joes we see numerous people from Canton there. So, I know we are not alone here. Saybrook has great staff , excellent parking and and pleasant interior I just just wish their food would improve. A fish house has a obligation to serve good seafood & provide a raw bar especially if they're considered the main seafood place in the area. read more

While in Canton, the five of us were pretty hungry. We stopped at the Saybrook Fish House for a dinner. If it's not obvious by the name, on what type of food they specialize in here, it'll be obvious as soon as you step inside, this place is fully decorated with fish everywhere. Unfortunately some of the fish that's on the walls, you wouldn't find in the menu. I started with the Chowder, we got a serving of escargot to share. I'm not a fan, so I didn't have any. The Chowder was very good, it was creamy, and rich, truly tasty and filling on a cold February evening. At the Saybrook Fish House, they offer complimentary rolls and butter, and a very large salad. This salad was very fresh and delicious. I didn't know we would be getting it, keep in mind when making your selection. I got the crab cake sandwich. Others in my party got the scallops and the cod. My crab cake was very tender and flavorful. It came with fries and pickles on the side. It was too much for me, I had to take some home for the next day. Overall, we had a very pleasant dining experience at The Saybrook Fish House. If you're into sea food I'd encourage you to stop by, and if you're not they also have other options. read more

Really love this place- on outskirts of town but great quality and service. Rustic/fish atmosphere like on a boat and very fast service. Extreme large portion sizes as we started off with garlic shrimp and Cole slaw, a shared salad (huge!!!), bread, and then finally our entrees. I buoyed salmon, seafood soup, and calamari. Some places are gourmet and hip. This place is not. But don't let that dissuade you from coming. In fact, on a recent Saturday night, the parking lot was nearly full when we arrived at 7:15. (Dinner before 7 is prime dinner hour here). The place is not full of twenty-something's. It's a rather older crowd. But they know what they are getting here and, like me, are more than happy about it. We got a table; paper covering the table. Which is good because you can get kinda messy. Service was terrific. We had a very attentive server who met every need and filled every water glass (multiple times, yay!). We started with escargot and mozzarella sticks. The sticks are more like logs and I worried if it wouldn't be warm in the middle. I should've have worried. These were legit mozzarella sticks with lots of flavor and gooey cheese. The marinara sauce is solid without being too spicy or garlicky. We then got the house salad. Never disappoints. Big portion, fresh ingredients and great dressings. For main courses, my dining companions really enjoyed their lobster rolls and their scallops with fries. That's probably the way to go. Never been disappointed with their fried fish. I ended up getting an Alaskan cod topped with mushroom. It wasn't my favorite fish meal of the year but it's solid and it's more that I wanted something a little more substantial. The mixed vegetables that I got with it were well seasoned and cooked just right. Desserts were a big hit too. The triple chocolate mousse was too good to pass up but the lemon cake was also a bit hit too. Overall, every time we come here we are happy with our meal. Reasonable prices, good service. Coming from Kentucky, fresh New England seafood is a true delicacy, and a lively engagement with the server is a must when eating out. The folks here catered to us. They showed a genuine concern for us out of staters. It was intrusive, but refreshingly engaging. We were intent on getting lobster rolls, and the lobster rolls were amazing. Eating here was one of the highlights of my trip. We made some memories in this trip and going to this restaurant was near the top of the list. My wife and I were here for lunch today. This is the first time we've been here for lunch. We were seated right away without reservations. We requested a table and were given our choice. Our server, Victor, came over promptly and was very attentive throughout the meal without being bothersome. He rattled off what seemed like a dozen specials from memory. They all sounded very good but were too large sounding, we were only there for lunch. We started out with cups of soup. My wife had the clam chowder and I had the fish chowder. Both were packed with their respective namesakes. Both were very good too. I love clam chowder but I like Saybrook Fish House Fish Chowder even more. Cod and Salmon were packed into my little cup of soup goodness. My wife had the lobster roll and I had the fish filet sandwich. Both came with a bed of French fries that we both found to be very good. Usually, fries are just an afterthought addition but these were actually very good. My wife's lobster roll was packed with lobster and she enjoyed it. She also was given a side of coleslaw, I would have rather had the coleslaw instead of the tartar sauce that I didn't use. My fish sandwich was big and it came covered in a blanket of melted cheese just dripping off the hot fish filet. It was very good. I allowed the slice of tomato and onion to remain on my sandwich and I'm glad I did. the onion brought a nice contrasting flavor to the fish and cheese. Now that I'm retired, I can see us going here for lunch again and again. Maybe we'll bring bigger appetites and try some of those specials that Victor so efficiently rattled off to us. read more

Fast, Friendly, Good drinks, good food! Bar tenders and servers are all very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. Seating is varied enough that it's easy to find a good spot. The lighting is just right, so you can see your food, but not be in a spotlight! The bar is a friendly place if you want it to be, but you can read your book if you'd rather! Service is friendly & not too slow or too fast! Outdoor tables are great depending on the weather. Flowers and beautiful trees brighten the view and provide welcome shade. I recently had one of the best lunches of all time. Joe, the owner, greeted and seated us. Our server was equally friendly and attentive. Fried fresh oysters, perfectly cooked vegetable medley, fresh salad with awesome house dressing, topped off by delicious lemon cake. This is the only restaurant (outside of New Orleans) where I order oysters. The meal is served at a pace worthy of a delicious meal. I appreciate everything about the welcoming ambiance and calm. Saybrook Fish House (SFH), long standing and steady as the years roll. My first visit, waaaaaay back in the first half of the 80's. In Saybrook itself, small warm a cozy as I remember. What most stands out, as many of you SFH veterans would too, the humongous salad bowl. No matter if there were two or twelve in your group - Huge no matter what. My wife and I recently re-visited the SFH in Canton, CT. It, too, is warm and cozy bringing back many fond memories of slow meals and beverages to kick-up the table banter with friends and family, and other times for two. On this night, a retake of "time for two." Promptly seated in a back booth and beside a warm fireplace (ambience only on this evening with a backlit pho-log fire, just the same groovy) we took the slow approach. Beverages: A Sangria and a pint of ale from Switchback. Later, a little more Sangria, a can of ale from Capitan Lawrence, with a basket of fresh bread. Salad: Thankfully, now a days, the humongous salad bowl is by request only or a standard for large groups. We chose a lighter fare, a small version of the House Salad with House Dressing (we couldn't resist). Main: Sea Bass and Shrimp over Ziti with a Creamy Vodka Sauce. If you're expecting traditional fish and chips run the other direction. While it is cod, the batter is wrong and the fish is in several small pieces instead of one large filet. It should just be called fried cod instead of fish and chips to be honest. The clam chowder is good, the mozzarella sticks were good if lacking salt, I had the bay scallops which were sweet and yummy. Service was good, could have been a tiny bit more attentive but nothing to complain about. The restaurant itself is clean and comfortable and the atmosphere is inviting. Every time I go to this restaurant the food isn't that good but it's so bad I n my opinion

I was so sad to find one of our favorite restaurants has slipped in food and service. The chef was always unable to tweak my meal for my taste bubs. As in salmon that I like with a little bit of a crust on the top and bottom. Or to leave off an ingredient in one of their daily specials. I was informed by the wait staff they don't change their specials or their menu to adapt to someone's diet restrictions. In the past, they have always been fine with any modifications. The wait staff listened to my likes and dislikes and suggested a menu item. When it came was different than what I had explained. My husband's swordfish was "good" per him but not the usual very tasty meal as before. We might try lunch after this dinner meal to see if it was just an odd Saturday early evening time or a different chef from when we've dined before. read more

This is not my first time here, but it will probably my last. Tonight my husband ordered an admiral's platter and I ordered the signature dish baked stuffed shrimp. I was very disappointed with the shrimp. First I was surprised that the shrimp actually still has its shells on and I had to use my fingers to peel it off. Stuffed shrimp is usually a fork and knife meal. Then when I peeled the shrimp, I noticed that the vein was not cleaned out. Not what I am used to. Dinner service was excellent tonight with a pleasant wait person. Salads were so cold and crispy, and the creamy garlic dressing never disappoints. We had the cod with salsa and it was very good. Had the garlic panko crusted cod yesterday - one of the most delicious, fresh seafood entrees I've ever had. Perfect, along with the creamiest mashed potatoes and amazing fresh crisp cooked veggies. Disappointing. My wife and I had been wanting to dine at Saybrook Fish House for some time now, and this afternoon, we finally did. I've never been there before, she had, many years ago. Decor was nice, booths seemed a bit tight for someone of my large frame, so we opted for a table. My wife started off with a Bloody Mary, I went with a Victory Prima pilsner. She thought her Bloody Mary was weak and had no flavor, and I wasn't thrilled with my beer choice. We both wanted to try the NE clam chowder, we each ordered bowls. My wife thought her soup was very bland and the portion of clams was lacking. I felt the chowder was OK, but honestly, I've had better. Was hoping our entrees would turn this lackluster meal around, but sadly, that was not the case. Her baked stuffed shrimp was underwhelming -- the stuffing was flavorless & soggy, the shrimp and vegetables were cooked in an oily, cheap, artificial-tasting butter. My scallop dish was the same -- blah, the same oily and artificial butter taste. And the scallops themselves were a tad on the mushy side. My wife stated to me that she has never seen me squeeze so much lemon on to my scallops. Yeah, I squeezed as much lemon as I could on them, that should tell you something. Service was just as bad, every employee was a "flatliner" who didn't seem to want to be there. No smiles, just zombies. Needless to say, I see no reason for a return visit. I don't expect to drop a decent amount of cash for mediocre meals. And I just can't see how anyone can say this would be "Hit or Miss" because I really couldn't find anything positive to say about our experience today. The only reason I'm not giving the Saybrook Fish House a 1 Star rating is because overall, it wasn't horrible. Bad, yes, but not in the horrible 1 Star basement. But bad is still bad. And disappointing because we live close by and would rather dine on seafood locally than drive down to the shoreline. read more

I have been wanting to visit here for some time - we are Often in the area and drive by. My wife tells me we ate here (probably 25 years ago) but I have no memory of eating at this location. There used to be one in Woodbury that I do remember. Anyway - we went for lunch on a Saturday and ordered a cup of the fish chowder - which was excellent, a salad - which was fine - the house dressing was good. We split, which we never do!, a captains platter. The clams, shrimp and fish were good although could have used some seasoning. The scallops were bay scallops and for a few that looked like scallops it was just breading. I liked the French fries my wife wasn't a fan. We decided that overall we liked it and would go back again but wouldn't make the drive just to go here to eat - it's like 45 minutes for us. We do routinely drive 45-60 minutes to eat at places we enjoy. Lastly the staff was wonderful and attentive. read more

Not very good. I kind of wanted to try this place the entire time I moved to Litchfield and when I did, it was a regrettable experience. When you walk in you are attacked by the smell of nasty, dirty, moldy carpet. The prices are very high for a place that doesn't put ANY money back into the restaurant. The fish was just okay. I think this place needs a serious visit by Restaurant Impossible and a total overhaul. When you're only 35 minutes from West Hartford, CT's restaurant Mecca, you better up your game. There are so many ways to fix a place but if you can't clean your carpet, or trash it and get regular floors, then what's the point in running a business. read more

I can understand experiencing some frustration with the Rocky Hill restaurant, and the staff there gets some marginally behaved customers. The Canton restaurant is smaller and friendlier. If you have a problem with the Canton restaurant, the problem is you, not them. read more

This is one of the best casual seafood restaurants I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. Although this was my first time ever having gotten takeout from this restaurant, I am impressed with the level of freshness and quality experienced with a seafood restaurant located so far away from the shoreline. I had the Captain's platter, which included bay scallops, shrimp, clam strips, cod, and served with a side of fries and coleslaw. The portion serving was definitely well worth the price of $21 (for lunch). I feel as though the cod was where the quality of the food was most apparent, and where the food really left quite an impression on me. It was flaky on the outside, crispy on the inside, and cooked to perfection - not overly seasoned or drowning in salt. The rest of the seafood options were decently, but nothing to write home about. Despite being nearly an hour's drive away from any of the well-known seafood restaurants on the coast of CT, this easily ranks in one of my top 5 restaurants. read more
