My husband and I decided to try these guys out this past weekend. I work in the area, so I'm always on the lookout for a place that can become my newest "guilty pleasure". When we arrived, the place was empty. We weren't even sure that they were open until we saw the kitchen staff behind the line. Upon entering, I saw a kiosk where you can place your order, but a woman emerged from the back to take our orders. Being that we weren't familiar with the menu, I told her that the kiosk might be easier. She insisted that it wasn't, and as I went on, I realized the same. The kiosk states that there is a $1.25 charge for the sauce on the side, but she explained that it comes with one sauce free of charge and additional sauces cost extra. We placed our order with her: A small Italian salad to share, the Fatty B calzone with the spicy marinara sauce and the Hot Mother Clucker calzone with the chipotle garlic ranch. We ordered them with the suggested sauces but also order the regular marinara and the garlic sauces on the side. We were given glasses for water (self-serve from the soda fountain) and also ordered a bottled beer and canned cider. By the time we were done ordering, a line had formed. The store was understaffed, which was explained to us later, so we had to exercise patience. We didn't receive our beverages until after the calzones were delivered. Before that, we received our rather large, small salad. It was more than enough for two people. The woman had explained to us that it comes with 4 cups of lettuce plus the toppings. That information helped us make our decision to share. The space is large and we noticed cornhole boards to be used on the patio. Unfortunately, it was raining when we went, otherwise we would have played. The calzones were good and filling. Neither of us finished ours and had food to enjoy at home later that evening. The Hot Mother Clucker isn't very pizza-esque, but dipping it into marinara sort of brought it back into the fold. The suggested chipotle garlic ranch was a better pairing indeed. The salad bowl/plate is oddly shaped, which caused toppings to being spilling off the sides. When it was brought to our table, the woman tried saving the toppings by wedging them between the order slip and her fingers and dumping them back onto our plate. I stopped her. I wasn't trying to be rude, but I don't want to eat food that a stranger's hands have touched. I explained this to her. She tried to assure us that she washes her hands constantly throughout the day, but she'd just come over from the register without a handwashing break. Just let the toppings fall where they may! This was our first visit to Sauce on the Side. The franchise is out of St. Louis and specializes in calzones. The sweet aroma of marinara sauce fills the air. You order at the counter and pay. Food is brought out to your table when it is ready. They have about 16 calzones on menu and a special calzone of the month. The clerk walked us through the most popular calzones. They also have five salads on the menu. I had a small Italian Salad, which is huge and filled with marinated artichoke hearts, olives, roasted peppers, salami, cheese mixed in with chopped romaine lettuce. The salad is delicious and filling. My husband had the Meat Me in St. Louis Calzone, which is packed with different meats and cheeses. The calzone is beautiful with a golden brown crust. The calzone comes with a marinara sauce for dipping. The calzone is gooey, delicious and filling. The clerk brought extra plates so we could share (without us asking). She checked on us several times to make sure the food was perfect. She was a truly 5 star server. They serve beer and wine and have televisions set up for sports. The dining room has a mix of booths and tables. They offer cloth napkins! The room is a little on the dark side. There is also an outdoor patio with tables. We loved our lunch. While I really love a good calzone, I am not too sure about these. They do have quite a few options and even dessert calzones. I guess I am just used to less ricotta. My calzone was mostly ricotta unfortunately. But otherwise it was quite tasty. I love the variety of sauces you can get here. I ordered extra because I am a saucy chick. Me and a couple of coworkers came here, I had always seen this place driving by and honestly didn't know exactly what it was so never stopped. I had no idea is is a place full of calzones. Like who would ever think that based on the name? I LOVE a good calzone! This place is great because they have pretty much every combination you can think of wrapped up into this lovely calzone and if they don't you can create your own which is nice. Typically when you go to place they may have a couple but they have like 15 or more. If you don't like Calzone, they have salad options which one of my coworkers got and it is a HUGE size. They have indoor and outdoor seating, we sat outside and the service was still good out there (sometimes it seems when you go places they forget about those sitting outside). This place is great. They have SO many options, everything is customizable, or you can build your own. The sauces are great too, each calzone has a specific one it's comes it, but again you can customize. Everything is made to order. The magic carpet ride is a mushroom lovers dream. The veggies were fresh and even the dough was good. Typically I don't eat crust on pizza, but the dough was so well seasoned on these calzones that I had to eat the end bits. The cock a doodle noodle: the macaroni overpowers the rest of the ingredients, but the mac and cheese is good so no harm done. The Duke was the best of the ones we tried. All the ingredients paired so well together and the sauce was the best out of them all. Next time I'd get a side of this ranch on its own, it's that good. Service was great as well, they were closing soon but had no problem giving me time to ask questions about the menu. Another customer came in while I was waiting, so even closer to closing, and his online order was sent to the wrong location. Multiple staff were quick to help him figure out what to do next. The space was clean and spacious, I can see this being a busy spot. They also have a bar! The only complaint I have is the knowledge of the menu by the gentleman helping me. This complaint isn't enough for them to lose a star since everything else was great. The menu is fairly big, and i wanted to be respectful of them closing, and asked which calzones are meat-less. He responded that they are all customizable (which is true), and then suggested I get the roasty toasty with no chicken. Although yes, that would be meatless, after another look at the menu I saw 2-3 options that would be vegetarian without any modifications. They even have an option with vegan cheese! Not sure if he was new, or having an off day, and he did give me a meatless suggestion, just not the best suggestion on the menu. I always get the Meat Me in St. Louie (Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, PROVEL® Cheese, Mascarpone-Ricotta Blend, Garlic Oil + I typically add sliced jalapeños for heat). Fantastic food! Took my sons on Sunday and we all got different calzones. Some calzones are a bit more "traditional" but many are more like sandwiches. If you're a fan of Monte Cristos, I bet you'd like this place. I was also impressed with the selection of local sodas and beers. All top shelf stuff but at decent prices. Service was good and the walls had fun art on them. One quick warning that St Louisians use Provel and provolone interchangeably. One of us got a calzone that was listed as using provolone but used Provel instead. If you don't know the difference, Provel is to provolone what velveeta is to cheddar. It had the signature St. Louis provel cheese and was so nicely made. If you've been to St. Louis, you know we have imos pizza thin crust with the provel cheese. This was like if Imos made a thick crust. The meat sauce was a perfect sauce on the side and I think next time I need to add ranch as well.
