First, the Japanese-inspired modern design was very sophisticated and pleasing to the eye. Yet, the table we sat at would not stop rocking throughout our meal. Second, despite us waiting about 7 minutes for our server to come over, she was very pleasant and knowledgeable. I can't remember her name though because she never introduced herself. Brittany maybe? Stopped in for ramen, the spicy miso was on point. Had that and the shrimp tempura rolls. Both were perfect and more than large enough proportions. We sat at the bar and Adam was behind the bar and took care of our both our drink and food orders, great personality, super attentive and made great recommendations for what sake to try. read more

I have been here twice and loved it both times! The first time I had the Spicy Miso Ramen and the best part was the broth, definitely warmed me up during an incredibly cold Buffalo night. On a bitterly cold january night, I strolled down the sidewalk of elmwood and found myself peering into the frost covered windows of sato. Who could resist a hot bowl of soup on such a frigid night. I decided to treat myself to the chefs special, which was a spicy japanese curry stew served in a cool little iron crockpot. This damn soup was so good i wanted punch a unicorn......you heard me. The only thing that warmed me more than the sake and soup was the smiles and sweet disposition of the staff. Everytime i come here the food is so good. Im not going to sit here and pretend i know the subtle nuances of flavors and spices and presentation. I am not a food critic. Left disappointed. Sato advertises itself as a authentic Japanese food but we found the dishes and environment lacking. Tea is charged for which is unheard of in a "traditional" japanese restaurant. Started off with Saute Mushrooms which were not bad but mildly charred. This was followed by Spicy Miso Ramen which the owner should be ashamed of calling ramen. The base was watery and thin with no flavor of pork, just lots of chili powder. The Chashu consisted of 3 tiny strips of pork. Vegetables consisted of a sprinkling of scallions. There was no egg, bean sprouts, kamaboko, or nori. I honestly felt I had just paid $14 for a pack of Nissin Ramen. The Saba no Miso ni with the mackerel tasted very fishy and the seasonal vegetables consisting of tasteless cauliflower. The combination of colors on the plate was not aesthetically pleasing. The ambiance is a throw over of the pre-existing restaurant. Bottom line, if your looking for authentic Japanese cuisine spend the extra money and go to Kuni's. If your looking for run of the mill Sushi go to Wasabi japanese restaurant which has no pretenses of being "authentic." Personally wish that NoNoo would reopen for some good ramen noodles. read more

The service here is pretty fast and you get to sit wherever you want when you walk in. The prices are decent; it does by how much you'd like in your ramen. I got spicy miso and it came with a decent amount of vegetables and pork; the ramen tasted a bit flour-y, but the base was alright. read more

Ambiance is great, but the food leaves something to be desired. The ramen soup was lukewarm and smelled uncomfortably of meat. The noodles in the soup were hardly cooked and oddly soggy. The roasted squash and winter green curry was phenomenal! The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The decor was a great use of the space. I called to place the order over the phone, and was told that they don't handle deliveries, and was transferred to grub hubs support hotline. Excellent ramen broth. Noodles have good texture and not over cooked with generous pork portion. Fried chicken and fried tofu appetizers were excellent. Sushi was nicely prepared and very high grade. read more

The food here is definitely worth making time for but what is truly amazing about this establishment is the service. I had the opportunity dine here with a small group last evening and everyone from the busboy to the manager was incredibly welcoming and attentive. Had outstanding Ramen in Chicago, and the craving for more accompanied me home. I tried SATO for the first time, and I am thrilled that Buffalo has a very, very solid Ramen joint to offer. The food was alright but the service was really lacking. As a party of three we ordered two appetizers and three entrees. We all agreed that each dish was over salted. The seaweed salad was very standard but tasty. I have dietary restrictions so I ordered a bowl of soup without noodles with extra veggies. I was sure to specifically ask the server before ordering, if they could accommodate my needs. Unfortunately, the bowl came out with no extra veggies. I tried to find the server to ask for more but he was very hard to grab. By the time he came to the table my bowl was cold and everyone was done eating. With the extra veggies I think the broth would have been less over salted and more enjoyable. We kindly asked the server, Josh L to only charge us for a small bowl of Ramen, since all I was served was a bowl of broth with the standard vegetable portions, and he immediately pushed back. He said "That's how it comes. Then don't order it without noodles".... I replied that I have dietary restrictions and as a restaurant they need to be prepared to accommodate people with restrictions. He then complied and continued with lots of attitude. For a relatively new restaurant, during restaurant week in Buffalo, I was disappointed with the food and especially the service. Lovely delicious dining experience. Came in from out of town and saw sato. It looked clean and hip from the outside so my two teenage kids and I wondered in. They were fully booked for a Saturday night so definitely make a reservation. Our 5:00 arrival allowed us to sit up front. I was worried I'd be freezing with the door opening and closing...but no. They have sensational modern heaters that kept are entire group comfortable. Our meal was top notch from the seaweed salad to the spicy tuna rolls, shrimp tempura rolls and veggie rolls. The service was impeccable and ambience hip and not crazy loud.... Just a cool calm hip vibe. This place has got it all. Enjoy! read more

To me I don't care how good the food is, which it is OKAY here, it's not fine dining and it's not that good that it excuses for the pretentious service. When a 24 percent tip is not enough for a server working at a less than fine dining restaurant there is an issue with the service. From working in the restaurant industry for years, if a server makes a comment about having to return $5 dollars to a table because they thought they deserved almost a 40 % tip on mediocre service and mediocre food for a $44 check, they should really consider what it means to be a business. This business is not fine dining, and dropping food off to a table doesn't warrant a tip over 20 % and if they think that it does it's certainly a business that people will not want to give their money too after their server attempts to make them feel stupid in-front of other customers for tipping 20 %. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but I go to restaurants for the food, if it's not good, I'm not coming back. I got the Shio Butter Ramen and the person I was with ordered the Spicy Miso Ramen, There was very little flavor in both. There wasn't much pork in the Miso and I don't think I tasted any crab in the Shio. The Spicy Miso Ramen was not spicy, like at all. The flavor was just....blah, that the best word I can come up with. I was really excited to go here and was just totally disappointed by the food. We wandered in here - for the second time in about 3 months - on a cold evening (cold for us, esp. just returning from LA). We recalled having great dishes here, and we were rewarded again this time. Sat at the front bar window overlooking beautifully lit Elmwood Avenue. Perfect service from Josh. 3 great small dishes - vegetarian dumplings (crispy but not tasting fried, and soft without being mushy... beautifully pleated); sweet potato tempera roll - just an excellent, not ordinary roll. And a Ramen special - Tan Tan? spicy ground pork with vegetables, and a tasty broth enough spice to be interesting but not overpowering. We ordered one to split and they divided it into 2 medium bowls. how nice. small but careful wine list - yay for French, not CA, Chardonnay, and reasonably priced. My friend and I came here for dinner on a Tuesday evening. My friend has travelled extensively throughout Japan and is a self-proclaimed 'ramen aficionado'. I love Japanese food but, sadly, most of my experience comes from hibachi restaurants. Hibachi has some good aspects but it's more of a novelty than a culinary experience. SATO, on the other hand, is authentic and fresh. Our waitress, Elise, was perfect from the moment we were seated. I love sake and their menu is extensive so I had many questions. Elise listened to my sake preferences and suggested one that fit my tastes exactly. She then suggested the gyoza and kara age chicken as starters and both were the best I've ever had. My friend said the gyoza tasted very authentic and had nice ginger notes. For my entrée, I went with the tonkatsu curry and it was amazing with a slight sweetness. I had only previously tried Indian curry and didn't know what to expect from the Japanese version. The curry spice was not too mild, but not overpowering and balanced perfectly with the salt of the pork. The vegetables were soft, but not mushy. My friend, obviously, ordered the Sato Ramen and after the first bite said he had not tasted ramen like that since visiting Japan. I would recommend SATO to any of my family or friends. With ample vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, there is virtually no one who wouldn't enjoy this authentic cuisine made with love. Poorly managed Japanese restaurant. My wife and I decided to make our first trip to Sato due highly rated reviews from friends. We've eaten ate many Japanese-American restaurants and I would say this place is far from authentic. My wife's family owns a Japanese restaurant and if they went to Sato they would be highly disappointed as well. When we ordered our food and when it arrived we were highly disappointed. As an appetizer we ordered the chicken karaage and the pieces were too big and soggy. Traditionally karaage is cut into bite size pieces. I ordered the Sato ramen and the broth was too oily and the noodles were undercooked. They claimed the dressing for the green salad is a homemade sesame dressing when it tasted closer to an Italian dressing. My wife ordered the tankatsu curry. The purple rice that came with the curry didn't balance out well which ruined the flavor of the whole dish. The water comes in a wine bottle that's not even cold. All of this seemed to happen on a slow Thursday afternoon and by having said that we were the only table there. The prices don't match the quality of the food. I've been to another Japanese restaurant in WNY and order a chicken katsu bento box that comes with gyoza, sushi, shrimp tempura, and rice for the same price Sato charges for their small lunch special which is a small bowl of ramen and a small salad. read more
