Had the fried green tomatoes as an app. They seemed "pre made", not in house. Good dipping sauce accompanied them. Shrimp and grits were good. Grits could have been a tad hotter but in hindsight, the shrimp were cooked perfectly. If the grits were hotter, they would have cooked the shrimp, right? Met a friend out at SASS. I had heard great things about the restaurant, so perhaps I had too high expectations. We sat inside and shared appetizers. I ordered a fried oyster appetizer and my friend got fried green tomatoes. The oysters were good, but salty. The tomatoes were not seasoned enough. I did like the remoulade sauce that came with them. For my dinner, I had the shrimp and grits. Again it was good, not great. The shrimp were cooked well and covered in a sauce that needed salt. The grits were good, but there wasn't enough.. I should not run out of grits and have shrimp and sauce left. For sides I got dirty rice and some of the blandest collard greens ever. My friend got the Bayou Meal with shrimp and oysters and she seemed fine with it. We both ordered desserts to go (bread pudding peach cobbler). I didn't try mine yet, but my friend found hers to be lackluster. And small for a $7 serving. I went back and forth about whether to give three or four stars. I am really thinking 3 1/2. I wouldn't drive there from Tallahassee, but if I was in town and wanted to grab a bite. I would consider. I saw how highly rated it was and expected way more. The outdoor patio looks nice but it looks incredibly casual inside, and not in a good way. Fascinated me that they ask for reservations! Food was just okay. I had salmon & it was a bit burned. Drinks were not great, it seemed like the different flavors were not paid attention to but just thrown in and the mix was not a winning combination. But most of all, they have "plantation grits" on the menu. I would highly recommend changing that as it is easily offensive and adds absolutely nothing. This is a Surprisingly Good Restaurant. The Food is Excellent! As is the service. I can't say enough good things about the food, but I'll try. To begin with, their use of seasonings is phenomenal! So much so, that ordinary dishes have a whole new flair. We started with the fried green tomatoes, which were presented on the dish like a work of art. They actually looked more like crab cakes and I can honestly say were the Best fried green tomatoes I've ever had. For the entree, I had the Etouffee which is somewhat a cross between gumbo and jambalaya. Second visit to SASS. Nice little area. Cool building. Service was decent. Seemed like it depended on the server you got. I got the ribs. Wife got the loin chop. Ribs were great. Tender with a good barbecue sauce. I wouldn't call it Cajun barbecue but more just regular sweet barbecue. Would have liked some more spice. Wife's loin chop was solid. She got it blackened. Nothing wrong with it. Peach chutney on top was nice. I got the wild rice and cole slaw as my side. Wild rice was good. A tad dry but probably just because not freshly made. Cole slaw did not look like the picture someone else posted. The cabbage was fine but it was absolutely drenched in the mayo based sauce. Couldn't eat it. Wife got red beans and rice and collard greens. Both were decent. Once again, sides seem like they are premade and probably sit in a container all day. It's a good place that I would honestly recommend going to when they are busier. Workers seem to work harder and food seems to be more fresh during the rush times. read more

We came for Sunday brunch as this is one of the only good restaurants in Thomasville that is open on Sundays. Cute place located in the old train station. They have beer, wine and mimosas after 12:30 on sundays. The good was great--the Cajun breakfast skillet was yummy! I have two complaints: 1) our server was cranky. Maybe she can was having an off day or maybe she is always that way, but she was not very nice or attentive 2) the drinks were weak--this was was true for the coffee and the mimosas. We were excited to eat here because of reviews. The staff are seriously undertrained. The waiter rushed us to decide on order. Then he failed to remove the first course before two more servers came with main course and there was total chaos for a minute. Dishes were set down every which way. Then my wine was awful so I asked for a beer. Server brought a bottle of beer, opened it and plopped it down in front of me. I asked if I could have a glass. I know labor is in short supply but surely at least an hour of training would have created some level of civilized service. Felt like a field hand was dropped in to start serving. Salmon was overcooked. Étoufée was thick brown gravy -- you could cut it with a knife -- and a few shrimp. My husband said pork was overcooked but delicious. Overall -- meh. Last Friday night I had the pleasure of checking SASS out. My only regret is not trying them sooner. My boyfriend ordered the filet with blackened oysters and I ordered the half rack of ribs. The filet was cooked perfectly and the seasoning on it was delicious. My boyfriend got the potato casserole and a salad with it. The croutons were amazing and so was the blue cheese dressing. At times some restaurants let the ball drop when it comes to the salad, but this salad was delicious. I also ordered the potato casserole, but got green beans instead of a salad. My green beans never came out, and our server covered our dessert in response. So you can definitely say we had impeccable service. The ribs were amazing and I could not believe that they were a half rack. The barbecue sauce was delicious and the meat was so tender! For dessert we got the beignets and we almost ordered more togo. They were delicious pillows that just melted in your mouth. If you have never been to SASS you definitely need to give it a shot. The food was spectacular and priced so well! Our server was attentive and gave great recommendations. She even let me try the collard greens before ordering so I would know if I would like them. We were pretty disappointed by this. First, we were told that it would be an hour wait, despite there not being anyone else waiting and empty tables in sight. When we told her we would stay and wait, they said "Oh okay" and then immediately found a table for us. We got the vibe they just wanted us to go away because they definitely had room. Nobody else that came in after us had to wait. The pimento cheese dip was relatively flavorless - kind of like nacho cheese. The shrimp etouffee was okay, but I probably wouldn't get that again either. We won't be returning. read more

Well, how about that! Another great restaurant in Thomasville that may go to the top of my favorites list. Located in the old train station, you enter on the platform side which gives you a chance to consider their large, mostly covered, outdoor seating area. The inside is pretty nice too with several tables and comfortable chairs and even a wooden waiting room bench if you are feeling nostalgic. Nostalgic setting aside, the food is the draw here. Lots of Cajun/Creole items on the menu along with some traditional Southern favorites. We tried the sweet tea brined fried chicken and the fried oysters lunch portion this time and both were delicious. Their grits as a side are a must try. So creamy and salted just right. The party potato casserole is basically mashed potatoes with cheese and bacon sprinkled on top. The mashed potatoes alone tasted very good and the cheese and bacon just added a little extra. The collards were pretty basic Southern style, but a little hot sauce and pepper vinegar made them tasty for me. Service was friendly and attentive and worthy of a little extra in the tip. Based on how good our food was, I think an exploration of the Cajun/Creole items are next for me. There's shrimp and grits, gumbo, po boys and so much more to try. And maybe one time we'll have room for desert because there were several options there worthy of a taste. read more

Sass is one of our favorite places in Thomasville...in South Georgia, actually. Everything we've ordered there is delicious. We particularly love the fried oysters, the poboy, the shrimp and grits, and the peach cobbler! All of our family has moved away from Thomasville now, so I don't know when we'll be back. Overall, I was very impressed. The restaurant is located in the old historic railroad depot--Thomasville is of note in the regional economics of the railroad because at one point it was the terminus of the rail-line. This is part of why the city became so affluent, as farmers came from all around to bring their goods here for shipment. It seems a very appropriate place for a restaurant dedicated to Southern cuisine and the old brick and high ceilings do impart of feeling of being transported back in time a bit. I only had dessert here, having just had dinner already at Liam's and lunch in Valdosta at Birdie's. So, after those two meals I wanted some dessert but also had expectedly high standards as both Liam's and Birdie's are second-to-none. I came to SASS and despite being by myself and only in for dessert was treated very graciously and seated promptly. The dessert menu included several seemingly New Orleans-inspired desserts including a Bananas Foster pound cake, beignets, and a bread pudding. I chose the bread pudding. This bread pudding came with a caramel-like sauce which was quite thick and, served warm--hot even--was nearly baked on the pudding like a candy shell, which was by no means to its disadvantage as it was quite good. The bread pudding itself was very sweet without the caramel sauce even and with the two together, it was almost too sweet but that said, also very flavorful, savory in the depth of bread's taste, and overall a very exacting take on the New Orleans classic. The service was outstanding and their iced tea was perfect. I will certainly return and cannot wait to try a full dinner here. read more
