A favorite Sunday brunch spot in Thomasville! You can order anything on the menu on Sundays, so he chose brunch and I ordered off the lunch menu! Oysters Benedict did not disappoint! French bread toasted and topped with fried oysters, poached eggs, and a Cajun cream sauce. So delicious and perfectly prepared. Bloody Mary paired very well with this dish! French cut pork chop, blackened, and topped with mango chutney! So tender and juicy! I chose collard greens as one side and they have that true southern taste! Red beans and rice as the second side...a personal favorite. We sat outside as it has a great vibe since it's located at an old train depot! If you're lucky a train will pass by while you're dining! Service is nice and servers are very attentive. You can also sit in the Bar Mason and get fabulous service as well and order off of the menu as if you were in the restaurant or sitting outside. We booked a table a week in advance, on arrival we were given a table right next to the computer and kitchen pass window, while there was plenty of room elsewhere. Bad start. Got their version of BamBam Shrimp on a bed of greens.to start. Presentation was on a bed of chopped iceberg lettuce, no side plates were offered, and we used our single paper napkin to keep our silverware off the table and wipe our mouths. No linen napkins. I did surf n turf, medium well which most kitchens struggle with. No different here, cooked well all the way through. Baked potato was genuinely cool to the touch. Collard greens were excessively seasoned with vinegar. Not good at all. The presentation was shockingly bad, one side on my plate had a rim of black pepper, the other side had a rim of butter from the shrimp, that's my best guess. Shockingly bad. My wife ordered ribeye medium rare. The outer part was well done and the inside was very rare, cook temperature way too high. Baked potato cool to the touch again. From my seat the kitchen looked chaotic and undisciplined, no quality control at the pass at all, no floor manager present anywhere to be seen. Sometimes my view was blocked by employees clocking in to work. This table should be the last to be assigned period. Food was spectacular along with the service. I was recommended to come here. Upon entering the side entrance, I was attracted by the nice ambiance outside. Very cute and comfortable outdoor seating area with pillows for comfort. The inside of the restaurant is small, but the outside patio is very large. In addition, the restaurant was very clean. I was promptly seated and my server was awesome. Another lady came and asked how we were doing; I believe she was the Manager. I ordered the maple salmon with a side of asparagus and dirty rice. My boyfriend ordered a platter with fried grouper, fried shrimp and a side of asparagus, casserole, and red beans & rice. Food was fresh and cook to perfection. I was recommended the honey maple salmon by my server and it was better than I expected. The honey maple syrup may look overpowering but it wasn't. It added a great bit of sweetness to the salmon. I have had the pleasure of eating at SASS for two of my husband's and my anniversaries. During each visit, I ordered either seafood or a combination of surf and turf. For being quite a ways from the ocean, the seafood was fresh and perfectly seasoned. If you haven't been, definitely get the Beach Bread and fried green tomatoes to start out. They have refreshing, cute cocktails for you to try throughout dinner as well. SASS is set within the old train station just before you cross the tracks and go into downtown Thomasville. Most recently we went when another newly opened restaurant in Thomasville was booked up. We were able to get into SASS with no issue. It appears they have expanded and use the entire train station space as the main restaurant and a lounge/bar-looking space at the back of the building. The service at SASS is always polite and attentive. On this follow-up visit to SASS, I'm happy to report that the food remains absolutely superb, consistently fresh, beautifully prepared, and delivered with a speed that is almost hard to believe. It's not often you find a restaurant that can turn out dishes this quickly while maintaining such a high standard of quality and freshness. As for the staff, the younger waiters here tend to be a little shy and standoffish. I chalk that up to inexperience and youthful nerves, so I'm willing to cut them some slack. That said, given the upscale environment SASS strives for, I think a more seasoned staff would better match the atmosphere. Experienced servers just bring a confidence and finesse that elevate the dining experience, especially in a place of this caliber. The host stand can also feel a little chaotic at times. The hostesses are friendly, but they are often very young women and sometimes make seating guests more dramatic than it needs to be... it's visible and, occasionally, a little frustrating. Again, this is something I think could be smoothed out with a more mature, discreet approach. If I owned the place, I'd lean into a polished, experienced front-of-house team, but hey, that's just my opinion, and it doesn't take away from what really matters here: the food. And let me tell you, the food delivers. Every. Single. Time. If you're a grits lover, this is your spot... they do them absolutely right. Their handcrafted cocktails never disappoint, either, though this time I opted for the house wine. It's inexpensive and decent for what it is, just another example of their ability to offer something for everyone. Despite a few hiccups with the service, SASS keeps me coming back again and again. Such a cool spot! Right by the train tracks. We sat inside & it was very cool to see the train pass by every once in a while. We started with pimento cheese bread, which was soooo yummy. Then I ordered chicken salad, my boyfriend got jambalaya, his mom got the salmon, and his dad got the shrimp etouffee . For dessert we got Eleanor's pound cake, which was INCREDIBLE! Sass is simply wonderful. For appetizers I had the shrimp. It was lightly breaded in a sweet and slightly spicy chili sauce. Excellent. Next time I'll order as an entree. You have a choice. My guest ordered the pimento cheese dip. It was accompanied by lightly toasted garlic toast. For dinner I had a 1/2 rack of ribs with cheese grits and collard greens. The ribs were great. Great bbq sauce. And the grits were smooth and creamy. Best grits I ever had. They also have shrimp and grits on the menu. The greens were perfection. Very fresh. He had a burger. And he said the burger was simple but the beef was so tasteful. Best burger he ever had. That's coming from a guy who loves the burgers at the Biltmore in coral gables beat Miami. Or the burgers at Peter Lugars In New York. Pretty stiff competition. Sass won out. We didn't have room for desert but next time I want to try the banana foster and the New Orleans begnins. Traveling from Central Florida to Albany Ga. We have family in the Thomasville area and decided to meet for dinner. Sass was on the yelp listing. I called a friend in the area and he said it was a good choice. No disappointment s! The restaurant is located in a old train depot building. The building seems to consists of a small bar (Bar Mason) that is very cozy, well appointed, and has 4 or 5 tables that double as dining tables. The center area has a event venue, I grabbed a peek but it looks to seat 100 or so and has a great feel about it. We made reservations (suggested for sure) and arrived a few minutes early. We were seated straight away. The drink selection and bar service was great. The cuisine is Louisiana creole and the food is amazing, jambalaya, etouffee, salmon, and steaks, red beans and rice, cheese grits, green beans and mushrooms, and some of the best collard greens I have ever tasted. I did not have room for dessert but I am coming back to try some in the future. Gavin was attentive and did a great job. He took great care of us and we will ask for him again on our next visits the trains run right by the restaurant still and the effect is very nostalgic. WOW!!! Visiting family in Tally and they said this was a must go to place. We arrived about 5 minutes beyond our reservation time since we had to find parking on the other side of the building and walk with our dog. They had just gave away our table. We had to wait about 10 minutes for them to set up another table outdoors. They didnt have enough heaters so we were fairly cold until another large party left and they were able to bring a heater over. Server was a insanely polite young man (southern manners), I am Miami trash and not used to seeing it. Service was great with him. We order a few apps to share. A shrimp plate, highly recommended cheese dip which I would have enjoyed better if the bread they brought was toasted. There was a toasted one that came with the shrimp or vice verse. Can't remember. I had a grouper sandwich which was cooked perfectly and man had I been feening for a grouper plate for a while. Not easily found where I live in Cali. Everything we ordered was amazing. Never went inside so cant comment on the interior. Great location and neat spot. An old train station. Has restaurant, a separate bar business, and its open to have events at. SASS is easily my favorite restaurant in Thomasville, quality of food, flavor profiles, friendly, accurate, and speedy service, I couldn't ask for a better experience from a restaurant. My favorite is the gumbo I can eat this for days from here. All the desserts are superb. Driving around town last night we went by what used to be the train station in the era gone by. Now a restaurant. So we went and my wife had the filet and I had the blackened chicken with asparagus. Both of us agreed that we made an awesome choice for dinner. Then to top it off we split the chocolate cake. It comes out warm and oh so good. Our waiter was great. I really wanted to like this place because of decent reviews but sadly it did not hit the mark. We called during a busy Saturday afternoon and they said if we came/made a reservation at the moment we would have to wait around an hour to be seated. However when we went we were seated immediately. It still seemed like they may have been understaffed because the servers took a while attending to us. We got the po boys (shrimp and grouper) and shrimp etouffee. The etouffee tasted like it had been out too long (very mushy texture and not much flavor past salt) and the po boys were okay but nothing special. Mine didn't come with sauce and I had to ask several servers to grab some. Overall it was okay as a lunch stop since we're not locals here. But nothing like what the reviews were raving tbh. read more

I always feel like the bad guy for leaving displeasing reviews for places, especially restaurants that are typically hyped by others. But...it's the truth about my experience. So, I've been back in my hometown visiting family and was desperately craving brunch. I remembered someone mentioning this fairly new "New Orleans styled" restaurant and upon browsing their website, I noticed that they offered Sunday brunch. I was instantly excited because brunch is the most important meal of the week (or at least I think so)! Service: my best friend and I dined together and received the most subpar service ever. The restaurant opened at 11am, we were seated by 11:06am when the restaurant was not busy, yet our server was mostly uninterested in us and did not give us the best experience. I should have taken heed to the couple of red flags -- 1) as one of the first patrons of the day, I was given dirty silverware. There really isn't a logical excuse for that. 2) the menu raves about their "plantation grits". Ummmm, it's 2021 and there are ample opportunities to educate yourself on why the glorification of plantations is not acceptable. Food: very subpar. I ordered shrimp and grits with a side of gumbo -- 2 New Orleans classics but the execution was not ideal....at all. There was minimal flavor and 0 excitement. The beignets, however, were pretty good. Perhaps my food expectations are heightened because I currently reside in New Orleans? Regardless, this place could take some pointers on how to offer better NOLA cuisine, properly wash dishes, and cease the agenda that plantation life was glamorous. Maybe I'll return for a dinner try??? Ehhh, we will see. read more

It's in an old train station which gave it a fun vibe, theres a pretty outdoor seating area but we opted for inside because it was chilly and we're from FL, lol. Our server was great, he was honest about our questions and didn't just say every dish we asked about was good. We got the warm pimento cheese dip as an app, it was delicious but could've used a few more pieces of toast to go with it. Two people ordered the shrimp and grits (recommended by our server) and two of us got jambalaya or gumbo. We were curious the pig tails and the party potatoes because of their fancy names. Pig tails were kind of like steak fries in a different shape and party potatoes were basically loaded mashed potatoes. I'm not knocking the names at all, it's cute, just explaining for the folks that wondered as well. Service was good and our food came out very fast. OMG, this place is on the all time list of my favorite (in-town/near home) experiences. I wanted to have a birthday celebratory lunch experience at a restaurant in Thomasville. The restaurant I had in mind, which I heard good things about, doesn't take reservations - which was not convenient since several older adults were in my party and I was concerned about the wait time. Indeed, the line was already long at this restaurant before opening time. However, my sister mentioned SASS, in which I was not at all familiar. We were among the first parties to arrive since it was just past opening time. We were very warmly greeted upon entering and I instantly liked the "rustic" look/feel of the place. When I mentioned that we had 15 in our party, they said no problem and asked us to give them a few minutes to set up. We were then taken to another room with several areas that could accommodate large parties. There was yet another room which seemed to be set up for a banquet of some sort. Loads of space in this renovated building; it seems it may have been some sort of train depot ages ago. Note, there is also an outside dining area. In any case, the place filled up quickly! It was good we arrived right when they opened, especially since we did not make a reservation. The decor was nice/serene. Our server was awesome - very attentive; orders arrived in a timely manner and all correct; superb service! Our party started out with several appetizers: Sha Bam Shrimp, Fiery Cajun Shrimp, Big Beau's Baked Pimento Cheese Dip, Fried Jalapeno Dill Pickles, and Fried Green 'Maters. Our entrees (which could be ordered as a lunch portion or a dinner portion) included The "W" salad, Blackened Grouper (with green beans/mushrooms, red beans and rice), Seared Salmon with maple syrup and ginger glaze (with collard greens, party potato casserole), Boneless Grilled Chicken (with baked potato, dirty rice, collard greens), Shrimp Etoufee, and the Fried Shrimp Po' Boy. Another person in our party ordered cheese grits, which he said was delicious. Basically, everyone enjoyed their meal, including the kids; they had chicken fingers and fries (called "pig tails" on the menu). Note, the kids menu is listed as "Picky Eaters" on the large menu, which I thought was quite cute. :o) Two in our party ordered dessert (chocolate squares and beignets) - the rest of us just didn't have room! This place is amazing! I'd come to this restaurant several times in the past but this time was special. It was definitely worth the 45 minute drive! We decided to come here for Valentine's Day weekend and they did not disappoint! We had the Beach Bread and fried oysters as appetizers. The Beach bread was really good. The cheese was rich and the bread was very soft. The oysters were seasoned well and fried hard. I liked the sauce they had with it. For the main course I had the Big Boy Shrimp Po Boy with the Chicken and Beef sausage gumbo. It was so good! I usually get my po-boy fully dressed but I decided to go with just lettuce and tomato today. The shrimp were so juicy and the bread was really soft. I usually don't do dessert but the beignets and ice cream were great. The caramel sauce, whipped cream, and strawberries are nice accents.
