My husband and I lived in Enfield around 10 years ago, and used to frequent Sarapes as our primary Mexican food establishment. Recently moved back to CT, had a jones for good Mexican, and decided to run up to Enfield and grab some takeout to see if it lived up to our memories of the place - and it 100% did. The mole was as good as I remember - spicy without blowing your face clean off, great flavors. My husband got the carne asada burrito and absolutely loved it - HUGE no kidding burrito. I also highly suggest the guacamole - worth the price, the takeout portion is enormous, good for either a number of hungry people or a couple of starving new parents. We live south of Hartford now, but we'll probably start making a run up to Sarapes every month or so because the food is that good. By far the best Mexican restaurant I have ever found. All fresh ingredients, varied menu, friendly staff, quick service and a TON of delicious food for your $$. Finally tried Serapes, and we weren't sure what to expect. Turns out the only thing we're sorry about is how long we waited! Hubs had a beef burrito that was large, fresh and delicious. Tacos De Lengua were soft, doubled up corn tortillas full of sticky, moist cooked meat that was seasoned simply and accompanied by good rice & beans. We ordered Posole, but only had a little because we were so full, but it was soooo good! Gently spiced, full of hominy and pork, the garnishes were plentiful- fresh lettuce shreds, thin sliced radishes, big wedges of fresh lime and crispy fried corn tortillas. The Posole alone is worth going back for. This is in our opinion a hidden gem and we can't wait to go back! read more

Visited this place a couple of times since they moved from their location on Route 5 for lunch. This was a first time going for breakfast and it was fantastic. We were the only ones there at 7:30 but it soon started to fill up with what appeared it be regulars which is always a good sign. Breakfast did not disappoint and we will definitely go back. I used to love this restaurant, and so did my family. We ate here for 10+ years. For whatever reason, since they moved to the new location at 95 High Street, the experience and the food has gone downhill. A complete 360. I don't even recognize the food. It looks like my Italian grandparents just learned what Mexican food is and took a try at it. I normally order 2 nacho supremes for my family, as they are normally very generous with fresh toppings and are delicious. This time all of the toppings were watery. My guacamole looked like pea soup. The sour cream was watered down. The refried beans looked like chocolate milk and had no flavor. The meat and cheese also had no flavor and was half the normal portion. All of these toppings were barely enough for one order, not 2 like I ordered and was charged for. They also gave me all these items to assemble myself. Normally, they are prepared for you. My beef quesadillas I ordered, also something I used to love from them, had little to no meat. They were barely stuffed with anything. Incredibly thin. Maybe enough meat and cheese for 1 pathetic quesadilla. This is the second time I have eaten there since they have moved. I ordered takeout this time. My first time at this new location, I was ignored for almost 2 hours and then delivered food I never ordered (no one ever TOOK my order). They brought me a plate of melted cheese. I have noticed the lack of Mexican everything and the inclusion of a sports bar. If that is the crowd they want, they can have it. Not much in the way of service and pricing seemed pretty steep for what we got but our meals were so flavorful that we weren't unhappy. I've eaten at Sarapes a half dozen times or so now, figured I'd give it a review. Everything I've had here has been a step above other north/central CT mexican restaurants. The guacamole is bright and crisp with cilantro, lime, and onion. My favorite dish is the chile relleno, perfect amount of breading, flavorful sauce, gooey chewy cheeses... I'm making myself hungry just thinking about it. Friends I've gone with love the Oaxacan platter and the beef tostadas. The menu is fairly extensive, and offers a lot of variety for frequent repeat visits. One of my favorite reasons to come here are the authentic mexican beers, beverages and sodas they stock. Flavors we normally don't see in New England, be sure to try one next time you're here. While Plaza Azteca is closer in Manchester, Sarapes is better, is more authentic, and is well worth the trip. Note, the parking in front is very limited. There is a side street right next to Sarapes with a larger lot behind the building where you can find plenty of parking within a short 100 yard walk. read more

Headed to Sarapes for a celebratory dinner with my husband. Drove right by the little strip mall where it's located. Fortunately we turned around. Very good, friendly service. Enjoyed the chips & salsa while perusing the menu & enjoying a Dos Equis. I really like the combo specials because I couldn't make up my mind on what to order!! Ended up trying enchiladas with chicken in red sauce, as well as stuffed poblanos. Huge plate of food with rice & beans along side. Very, very tasty! Ask for their hot sauce...both green & orange varieties are excellent! Husband destroyed a giant burrito, declaring it the best in the area. So many reasons on the menu to return! This place is pretty flipping stellar; I've been here about 10 times so I feel qualified to give an informed review. Ambiance: Let's just say you won't be blown away by this place's interior. Everything could use updating from the lighting to the booths. Honestly this doesn't bother me in the least. If they were touting they were fine dining then I would expect the ambiance to reflect that. Service: When they're not busy the service is very attentive/friendly. Normally we go on weekdays and earlier than the dinner rush so we get plenty of attention. We recently went on a Friday night around 7pm and we had a very different experience. We always order the same appetizers (which we normally do as soon as the wait person arrives). We waited ~10 min after getting our menus before we were even given our waters, which is when we had the opportunity to order. They were pretty busy and they had one person waiting tables, with a runner for some of the food. On the busier nights they need at least one more person in the dining room because the wait was way too long. Food: Onto the part that everyone cares about, when it comes to making your belly happy, this place excels. We always order their nachos (which we get with chorizo); they are the perfect gooey blend of cheese, peppers, beans, and chorizo. If you don't like these nachos you really need to have a long period of introspection, and fucking fix yourself, they are the cat's pajamas. Their burritos are equally awesome I've had the El Pastor and the Carne Asada... both will not disappoint. Their tacos are very authentic: fresh corn tortilla, your choice of meat, grilled onions, cilantro, and a wedge of lime... then end. In addition to cow tongue (my personal fave) they also have beef lips, which I had never tried before. The beef lip taco reminded me of the fatty part of a roast (flavorful but not my favorite texture). Personally I think their rice, beans, and house salsa are very flavorful. I think people's main issue with the salsa is because they've spent the majority of their lives eating Americanized Mexican food. That salsa is pretty authentic and definitely made fresh. My biggest gripe with the salsa is the little cup they serve it in is woefully lacking paired with the basket of chips. Serve me two damn salsas for Christ's sake! I always ask for two, you guys should know this by now. I've had their enchiladas with a green sauce and a mole sauce. The green sauce was awesome, and our friends assured us the mole was awesome as well (I've come to the realization after trying various mole that I'm not a fan). Their sangria is pretty good as well with plenty of fresh fruit mixed in. Here is the very short list of food that I wasn't really a fan of. Queso: Instead of being a thick and creamy it was beans with a layer of normal cheese that seemed to be melted with a microwave...very unappetizing. I also went for breakfast and got their huevos rancheros. They were quite bland and lacked anything aside from eggs, red sauce, and a little bit of meat mixed in. Bottom Line: A pretty solid place to try out, especially if you try when they're a little dead. Ultimate hole-in-the-wall dining experience. This place makes some seriously delicious food, and you will be hard pressed to leave hungry. I have eaten here twice, and was extremely satisfied both times. I would like to see lunch specials (smaller portions at a lower price), but if you plan ahead with your friends you can achieve the same effect. The staff is super friendly, and the atmosphere is cozy, but not cramped. If you are near Six Flags New England, and you want authentic Mexican food, go to Sarapes. read more

Food = Good Fruit Flies = More than i can handle. Went here based on Yelp rating. The food was good, but pricey. The fruit flies were everywhere, yet free. I don't know where they were coming from, but i was swatting them endlessley for the entire meal. I was surprised that my server (i think owner) never mentioned a thing as i was swatting while conversing with her? I sampled a huge variety of what was on the menu and nothing was too remarkable. I only dropped it a star because I had to ask for things and remind my server to bring things that were forgotten. Excellent quality food and super friendly staff. Definitely as authentic as you will find, but I was a little disappointed. I ordered a Torta, but the bun was flaky to the point that it completely shattered apart with every bite. I was left with no bun and had to turn my Torta sandwich into more of a Torta bowl. Not very pleasant. Maybe that's how they really do it in Mexico, but my gringo tastebuds prefer a Torta sandwich. The other members of my party who stuck with the enchiladas and burritos seemed much more pleased with their orders. We came during lunch time, and service was snails pace slow. The elderly man taking our orders also appeared to be the chef, waiter, and hostess, so you can imagine the efficiency there. Definitely some confusion about whether they take credit cards. At the beginning of the meal we asked if they accepted credit cards, and he said yes. We told him we would need separate checks. At the end of the meal we paid with 4 different credit cards. The waiter went to the cash register for 10-15 minutes, an unusually large amount of time to swipe 4 cards, and came back very angry. He raised his voice and told us to look at the menu because it says no separate checks. He told us he was losing customers because he had to spend so much time on us (the only customers in the restaurant). We checked the menu and couldn't find any such disclaimer. Nevertheless, I left with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth both from my disintegrated torta and the rudeness. read more

This restaurant is really a hidden gem in Enfield. It has authentic Mexican food and absolutely the best salsa I've ever had. The food is amazing here. The first time I went here, I ordered a chicken enchilada in a sweet sauce. The sauce was an odd flavor and green in color. I didn't much like it. The dish was served with beans and rice, neither of which I am a big fan of. However, I came back again and just ordered the quesadilla from the kids menu. Not only is it cheaper, but the portion is still fairly large. It comes with a salad on the side, topped with fresh mozzarella. Delicious! It's my favorite thing to get, even though I'll eventually force myself to be "adventurous" and try something different. My favorite thing about this place is their amazing salsa. It's so fresh and is to die for. You can buy it in large to-go containers for a fairly low price. The interior of the restaurant is kind of small... But I like that. We both ordered combo #2 which features 2 flautas, 1 tostada, and with a generous portion of rice and refried beans. Easily 2 or 3 meals on a plate! Since this is our first time I wanted to try a taco so we split a steak taco. Wow! From the chips and salsa all the way through the main course the food was fresh, flavors were vibrant, and the best part? We were in and out within 40 minutes! The food was good but the service was VERY slow. It was seat yourself and there was one 4 top open. It took them until about 10 minutes, or more, after we sat down (I grabbed menus myself) to come over to the table, take our drink/ food order, and finish cleaning off the table. Then it took forever for our food to come out. Our appetizer and entrees came out at the same time. They had Mexican food, breakfast food, and American food on their new menu. I ate here for lunch today. My boyfriend and I poured over the menu for at least 20 minutes before being able to order. I got the combination plate #3; which included a pork tamale (my choice, I could have had chicken, and another choice... I forget what) , a chile relleño with cheese (my choice... I had different meat options) substituting a taco al pastor for the tostada. It was amazing. Although, it was also $17 (rounding up slightly). My boyfriend got the taco de lengua, and the Platillos de Oaxaqueno... you just have to get it for yourself in order to experience the awesome-ness! The avocados, pico de gallo, limes and everything else was super fresh and the limeonada was ridiculously refreshing. We drove from Northampton, MA to Enfield, CT because we love trying out new food places... we keep going back, because we love it! Plus, since it was Sunday they had Pozole- I got 2 to go, along with a ceviche tosatada for friends who were back in the Pioneer Valley, drooling. The service is a little meh, depending on who you get. The prices are sort of high compared to other places that I've visited, especially considering that it's attached to a dry cleaners, in Enfield, Connecticut. Thank you, thank you, thank you Sarapes. This place really needs a liquor license. I mean a Mexican meal without beer or a margarita just doesn't seem complete. I wanted to like my experience here more than I did. Outside the restaurant they listed six dinner specials. Inside they never mentioned them either in the menu or from the server. we forgot what they were! We all opted for combination "safe and sane" meals. we all thought the chips(I believe homemade) and the salsa were bland. Cheese enchiladas didn't have enough filling and were a little crunchy. pork tamale was fine but no wow factor. beef burrito got good grades as did the beef taco. We all enjoyed the beans and rice. The Jarritos mandarin soda from Mexico seemed the most authentic part of our meal. Strange 1960's oldies music sung in spanish seemed unusual to me and was too loud. Service was fine.
