    The fried meatballs, excellent

Chef Sarah Cicolini worked in fine dining kitchens, but at Santo Palato, the theme is to perfectly execute a casual trattoria fare - simple comfort food made soulfully of Rome classics. Cicolini's small dining room in the residential Appio-Latino quarter for is always busy and vibrant. My favorite dish is the delicate trippa alla romana: tripe cooked with tomato and seasoned with caper, anchovies, rosemary, vinegar ($11). I can eat this all week long. The Polpetta di coda alla vaccinara, levistico e cacao - Oxtail meatball, lovage, peanut sauce is spectacular at $11 is mind blowing good! We cannot rave about this spot moreb

    Oxtail meatball

This was outstanding -- it very much lived up to the hype for us. We got the oxtail meatball, sliced beef hearts with toast, a cheese plate, three pastas (carbonara, amatriciana, and one with pumpkin cream/saffron/ricotta), and their maritozza for dessert. The carbonara was our favorite in Rome, and we loved the amatriciana as well. The very best dish, though, was probably the meatball, which was just so incredible. I also really loved the beef hearts. Next time around, I'd definitely like to try even more veggie and offal dishes -- I'd probably sub out the cheeses and the third pasta. Surprisingly, I think I'd also skip the maritozza next time -- the cream was softer/runnier than we typically prefer on this, and it looks like they often have other desserts which also look great. Regardless, we will definitely be back.

Nearly every chef I know has raved about SantoPalato, because I'm generally a not fan of offal this was my first time. I figured I needed listen to my friends and finally try it for myself. Spoiler, WOW WOW WOW. Every single thing I tried, WOW. Open in 2017, 22 seats, €15 taxi & 20 minutes from city center, in Rome's San Giovanni residential Appio-Latino quarter neighborhood. Reservations strongly suggested. "My name is Sarah Cicolini. I was born in Abruzzo, I did not study to be a chef, I learned to be." She moved to Rome to study medicine, but after 1-2 years, she swapped her white jacket for the chefs apron. Chef Sarah Cicolini is known throughout the world for her mastery of the quinto quarto (the fifth quarter - that is the offal & remains from butchered animals) I read a quote from Sarah explaining how to truly respect a animal "My dishes start from the search for an ethical consumption of meat. I believe it is wrong to eat only the noble cuts " Young Chef Sarah Cicolini started in fine dining kitchens including Metamorfosi, Roy Caceres' Michelin-starred restaurant, but her forte is expertly executed trattoria fare that channels the soulful simplicity of Rome's peasant classics -- she blurs the line of rewriting food history and respecting it at the same time; and does without the appearance of "trying too hard" A just enough yolky carbonara helped this restaurant take off, but a daily-changing chalkboard menu keeps regulars coming back. This is what ordered, and each impressed me on every level! Polpetta di coda alla vaccinara, levistico e cacao (Breaded & fried oxtail meatball, wild celery & peanut sauce with grated cocoa powder) Spaghettone alla Carbonara PLIN di ossobuco MIDOLLO SAUCE Fresh pasta filled with slow cooked oxtail. The (drinkable) sauce base is a brodo made from the veal spine, butter & black pepper. Not one thing we ordered tasted remotely bad. Everything was incredible. The most amazing carbonara I've ever had. Al dente defined.

The food is four star you are mixed with tourists and locals. Do your best to travel off-season.

When we arrived on a late afternoon, we waited about 10 minutes before getting seated. To start off, we got the Limoncello Spritz (€10) and Aperol Spritz (€10), which were refreshing. For our pasta, we ordered the Fettuccine with Oxtail (€18) and Carbonara (€17). We also wanted to order two more Secondi dishes, but the waiter warned us that the pasta is filling. After we finished the pasta, we did still order the Rabbit (€19) because it wasn't something we usually see on the menu. For the carbonara, the flavor was delicious but not really my favorite pasta shape. It was also quite al dente with a chewy texture. I have to say that the oxtail was spectacular though with its juicy and tender meat sauce. While the rabbit was nice to try once, it was a bit dry with minimal meat. Overall, good spot but nothing worth waiting too long for. Also, I'd stick to the pasta here as it's all handmade. You even see them handrolling them inside. Note that they also charge €2 per person for service fee already.

The pasta was perfectly cooked, coated in the creamiest, silkiest sauce, and the Parmesan cheese was absolutely heavenly. Simple ingredients, flawless execution. I also had the berry cheesecake, and it was just as amazing. Light, creamy, not too sweet, and the berry topping tied everything together perfectly. Pure heaven from start to finish. From the food to the experience, this place is a must when you're in Rome. I'd come back again and again without hesitation.

We were lucky enough to grab a table for lunch. We had a margherita, pepperoni, and a burrata with prosciutto pizza. All three were outstanding. The crust, the dough, the toppings - everything tasted fresh and came together perfectly. One of the best, yet simplest meals we've had. They also offer salads, though we didn't try any. The two behind the counter were fun and friendly. They take your order, ask where you're from, and then shout out your location when your food is ready - a really fun touch. Bonus: our table had a USB charging station, which was a really nice surprise while out exploring the city. There's also a small bathroom in the back for customers. This one really hit home. Definitely worth a stop.

Plus, the space is very hot inside, but better to sit near the window or do takeaway. I wasn't very hungry, but wanted one last pizza in Italy. When I saw that this spot does mini pizzas, which means I was able to choose a variety of flavors; I was so excited! Unfortunately, they ran out of the mini pizza dough and only had the large. It really is a shame, because I didn't think the bigger version is worth €15 each. Nonetheless, I ordered the Burrata & Anchovies while the husband got Pepperoni. I really did enjoy the flavor and chewiness of the dough. The burrata also gave it such a nice creaminess to balance the pizza that worked perfectly. Sadly, I had to waste a slice because I couldn't finish the larger pizza, so still a bit upset that I couldn't order the mini. With that said, it's a delicious pizza spot.

Pane e Salame, however, was delicious!!!! On our first day in Rome, my husband and I decided to search for a lunch spot nearby (we were staying near the Trevi fountain), and I found this place had pretty good reviews. We got there about an hour after it opened and requested a seat outdoors. They have a tiny patio across from their entrance, but they fit quite a bit of people in it! We initially wanted to order two sandwiches to try more items, but I'm glad we just shared one - they were big and filling! We also had the small charcuterie board to share which was plenty of food for us both. We shared a bottle of rose, and all in all, we paid under $50 (usd) - what a steal! This was the perfect first meal in Rome. The food was incredibly fresh, the service was great, and the outdoor seating allowed us to experience the streets of Rome. 10/10 - would absolutely go back.

But overall, I would recommend to go here.
