On a recent daytrip to Savannah, my boyfriend and I decided to search Yelp for a good place to eat. Sandfly BBQ came up as being relatively close to Savannah, with good reviews. It was totally worth going a little out of our way. I had the pulled pork and the beef and my boyfriend got the "Hog Wild" platter, which had ribs, sausage, pulled pork, and brisket. There are 3 sauces provided, a vinegar based one that was my favorite, a mustard based one that my boyfriend loved, and a yummy sweet one. The food was amazing. The pulled pork was some of the best I've ever had, tender and sweet. The brisket was also awesome, and just fell apart in my mouth. My boyfriend loved the ribs and the sausage was pretty good too. We also got collard greens, green beans, and mac and cheese and our sides. All were amazing. There was delicious bits of the ham and bacon in the green beans and collards. Th place was also packed on Saturday around 1pm, but they took our order and got our food out to us in under 10 minutes. It was great. Don't be put off by (a) the challenge of finding the Sandfly or (b) it's location in a strip mall or (c) it's exterior appearance; as your mother may have remarked, you can't tell a book by it's cover. Go in, get a bowl of Brunswick stew and at least a small sandwich - basically of anything, it's all good - and congratulate yourself. The stew really is exceptional, the barbecue sandwiches are all wonderful, there's friendly staff, the service is quick...frankly, it's all good. We live 2/3rds of the way across the country but as it happens travel from Charleston to Orlando roughly every year, and we will definitely time our travel to be able to stop in the Sandfly whenever we have the chance. If you want to have good southern bbq and skip the crowded Savannah metro area take a trip out to Sandfly, a cozy neighborhood in south Savannah. I've eaten here several times, navigating through an extensive offering of bbq meats, pork, chicken and beef and an array of sauces. There is a cozy but simple dinning area. Don't expect a dining room of any sorts. I always opted to take out my food and drive a short distance to the Isle of Hope marina and enjoy my bbq while enjoying one of my favorite tidal waterways. Such a peaceful place, such beauty, accompanied by tasty bbq. I used to drive half an hour from Rincon to enjoy my favorite eatery in Savannah. Miss it dearly now that I am gone. It was the last place I stopped before moving. This place is a must see if your in town and ever wondered why people talk so much about southern bbq. read more

Really good BBQ if you are in the mood. The fresh local shrimp Po-boy has been my reason to be there recently. The bread is nice and crusty but light and the shrimp are fried right. Add some awesome remulade and a little lettuce and you've got a winner hidden in a great BBQ joint. If you order the ribs go light because you may only get four or five but they are filling. The brunswick stew will be a good reason to go back once it cools off a little. Typical for Savannah, you never know what you are going to get until you go. read more

Eight of us were in town during St. Paddy's Day and we stopped by based on a friends recommendation. We had several sampler plates in order to try their variety of meats and sides. It was eight out of eight in favor of five star excellence. I love sandfly bbq. I eat here at least once a week. I almost always get a hamburger with French fries and a cup of Brunswick stew. We were out of towners visiting Savannah/Tybee and wanted to try some of the BBQ joints that Savannah had to offer. On its own, Sandly has some tremendous BBQ; however, when compared to Wiley's Championship BBQ, I would definitely give the edge to Wiley's. I got the sampler platter at both places so I could compare the two. The ribs and brisket were no doubt better at Wileys. The pulled pork was about even and the sausage better at Sandfly. The real differentiators are the sauces and the sides at Wiley's. The macaroni & cheese and sweet potatoes at Wileys are out of this world good! While the sides at Sandfly are good, the portions were extremely small and the prices were equal or more. Give both places a try and decide for yourself; but Sandfly is 2nd in my book behind Wiley's and ahead of Angel's. read more

We have driven by this place on several occasions when in Savannah and the parking lot was always packed and so were the tables outside. This time we decided to join everyone to see if the people really knew good BBQ. Several people were waiting on to go orders. We learned that we had to place our order at the counter and then find a seat - inside or out. In a few moments we were eatin' some good food! I had the four rib plate and my husband had the smoked sausage. We both had the BBQ beans and cole slaw. My ribs were big and meaty. I don't know what all their rub consisted of but boy did it work. My husband had a link that had been smoked and then sliced. Tasty! I'm picky about BBQ beans but they had some of the best I have ever eaten! The cole slaw was good, nothing real special. There were 3 sauces - sweet, mustand, and hot. Tried all three and they were better than some I've had in other places. We learned everything is made from scratch, except for their sweet potato fries and okra. They are brought in. But, who cares? Most restaurants do the same thing! Anyway, they have some real good eats goin' on at this place. If you get a chance to stop in, make sure you save room for the homemade coconut cake. YUMMY! read more

What a great treat to have such good food after a lovely afternoon walking around Wormsloe. Knew it would be great when the door opened to an amazing barbque aroma. Ordered the brisket platter to share with a side of collards and french fries. Fantastic food - brisket was perfect and the two sauces we tried were amazing. French fries were crisp and a great contrast. The collards could have been a bit hotter (temp, not spice), but were cooked perfectly. Definitely stop by on your way down here! I'm from Austin, TX. I smoke ribs. Sandfly ribs were meaty, moist, fall off the bone, and had the best damned rub on them I've ever had. Brunswick stew was savory, smokey, and all around awesome. Pulled pork with the vinegar sauce and the occasional dollop of the mustard sauce, is as good as it gets. Sausage sammich with the grilled onions was a two run double in the bottom of the 9th when you are down by one. I can't wait to come back to this place next year. Oh yeah, the people are friendly. Called an hour ahead for my lunch order, got there and still had to wait for another half hour because they forgot to make it, then another ten minutes because they burned the sausage. Not at all impressed by the BBQ or the service. No cornbread because too many people were requesting it, so they serve texas toast instead. Thumbs Down! If you are going to make your kitchen within view of the counter, at least have the guys back there play with their hair or sneeze away from the from food.
