killing zombies is a great way to spend our friday evening! deadwood phobia was a v immersive experience. smooth check in, friendly staff, and amazing visuals. i liked how the gameplay also required some dodging and avoiding obstacles, so it wasnt just shooting the entire time there was a little bit of an audio glitch and it was difficult to hear my teammates. also the headsets did not feel the cleanest LOL. overall, a little pricey but definitely a memorable experience. the trailer/highlight reel they record of your team are a fun bonus!! read more

Sandbox VR has been in the Domain for several years now and we've always wanted to try it out. Sorry to say it fell way short of expectations... We signed up for the Seekers of the Shard: Dragon Fire on a Saturday morning and wound up playing with a nice father-daughter duo. The experience was lackluster from the start as we all waited outside for the doors to open (despite being instructed to arrive 15min early). The staff who walked by while we stood around didn't even bother to greet us, and this apathetic service continued as we eventually went inside to wait some more. If you're a bit of a germaphobe like me, consider bringing some Clorox wipes because the gear smelled TERRIBLE. I'm talking probably-never-been-washed terrible, and it's hard to escape the fumes when you're wearing a full headset, vest, anklets, and bracelets. The stank 1000% takes away from the immersive experience so you really gotta power through. As far as other sensory inputs go, everything is pretty laggy. Having tried other VR headsets, this one felt clunky - especially when it comes to audio and use of weapons. The story is pretty fun and the gameplay is cool for the first bit... until you realize it's just a constant swarm of enemies coming every few minutes. Wish it wasn't so redundant! If you're playing with a group, it might be more interesting to select characters with different types of abilities. Can't say this is something I'd do again, but maybe the tech will improve and the equipment will be properly cleaned someday. For now, I'll just giggle at the recordings we left with and try not to be reminded of the stench that came with it (shudder). read more

VR gaming had been on my bucket list for a long time and finally got to try it with a group of friends. The staff was very accommodating and flexible when a few members of our group arrived late, which we really appreciated. The facility itself was clean, spacious, and comfortably cool. Getting geared up took some time as we put on a vest along with arm and leg trackers, and there was a safety briefing and instructions before the game begins. The VR experience started off with a few technical hiccups. There were some audio echoes and glitches in the headset at first, but these issues gradually cleared up as the game progressed. Once we got into the action, the experience was incredibly stunning. Battling Demogorgons in the Stranger Things world was immersive and exciting, and coordinating with friends made it even more fun. You could definitely hear our screams echo through the facility while we were at it. We also celebrated one of our friend's birthday with a cake in the virtual world. Sunday marked a great one year with my current girlfriend and someone who means a lot to me. We had all these ideas on how to celebrate and spend time together, but the weather in the forecast really killed any ability to plan an outside adventure. Luckily, I had an ace up my sleeve and called an audible by suggesting the new Stranger Things: Catalyst experience at Sandbox VR. My girlfriend is a huge Stranger Things fan. It's one of the first shows she was following from the first season until the finale that she got to be a part of the zeitgeist with. The moment I suggested this, any other plan went out the window because to her, this was a must. This was not my first experience with a VR attraction. I got to try The Void when it was still in business at Disney Springs doing a Star Wars experience, and I remember having such a blast with it. This was my girlfriend's first time in a virtual reality space like this. Sandbox VR is the modern, surviving version of this doing a similar concept of suiting you up in a crazy VR suit with a headset, headphones, and a bunch of other bells and whistles before you enter a new world. The one thing that is different is that The Void had you walking through their space in their experience while here you're set in a box for the most part. Sandbox VR keeps you in one space for the entire duration and plays it out like a rail shooter arcade game. Different concepts, but both highly enjoyable. The staff were helpful in making sure we were all suited up and ready to go and we had our pictures taken right before they put us into the room. Once we had our headsets on, the experience started immediately. What's so fascinating about an experience like this is how immediate your brain just tells you that this is reality. You just believe what you're seeing is real. The avatar of my girlfriend is moving in real time, the catalyst is a tangible object I am holding. I am a Stranger Thing or whatever they call it. From the get-go, you are given a brief tutorial as a training and then suddenly the game goes from 0 to 100 and ramps up expeditiously. My girlfriend was hootin' and hollerin' the whole time as demogorgons (and democreatures as she calls them) were flying up on us and attacking us. You're genuinely in panic as these things get close to you. The anxiety feels real. The audio, the visuals, and everything in between just gets you immersed in it. The experience lasted about 30 minutes and by the end I was sweating profusely. I'm in pretty decent shape, but I was an absolute mess by the end. After all the equipment was taken off, we got sat next to a TV to show us our scores to see who leaves with bragging rights and is crowned the MVP (it was me by the way). On top of that, you are shown three videos of the VR experience that are recorded during your play. It scenes from the virtual world with a real camera that's pointed at you acting like a fool. Here, we got a dance scene from the end of the experience, a vertical video, and a horizontal trailer. Each were extremely humorous and given to us free of charge with our purchases. I know it works as free advertising for Sandbox VR to give you those videos to post online and all that jazz, but places like this still seem to charge for the memories. To get them included for free as a little keepsake is an incredible gesture and makes me want to try another experience. As for the videos themselves, they are still frying me, and I've watched them numerous times since the experience. If you are a Stranger Things fan, the Catalyst is a must-try. For someone who's only seen 3 episodes but has a good understanding of the show through osmosis from my girlfriend, I had a blast. Even if you're not a Stranger Things fan, there are 10 other experiences to try. The price with everything considered was pretty fair, and we truly had so much fun that I think it was worth it with what value we got out of it. Sandbox VR is a fun interactive VR studio which you can sign up for with friends or solo for ~45 minutes of entertainment. Located on rock rose in the domain, the pink garage nearby is probably the easiest parking solution (free) and is a 5 - 10 minute walk from the garage. There's limited street side parking as well but they're usually occupied so make sure to account for some park and walk time depending on the time of your reservation. Sandbox has several game options than you can play and I think most of them can be up to 6 players in a single room. I played the Squid Games version and it started with a quick safety debriefing followed by about 40 minutes of VR play of multiple cute little mini games. I think we played about 5 mini games in total and the score for each player was recorded per game to arrive and the final winning player (me, of course ;]). For those who haven't done a VR Interactive before, it is a cardio workout as you're dodging, running, crouching, and bumping into each other while navigating each stage so dress comfortably! The staff was extremely nice and helpful and the facilities were spacious and clean. Pricing is a bit on the higher end but that seems to be about the going rate for VR activities like this. They do offer you a discount if you sign up for another event after you finish one so if you know you want to come back, you can book another followup for 20% off. read more

I was completely blown away! Such an amazing experience with my wife and friends. Absolutely loved every minute of it. We tried the Stranger Things: Catalyst Experience. We just finished watching the Stranger Things series last year and thought this would be a fun experience. It completely exceeded our expectations. First, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Secondly, the session itself was a ton of fun. It felt so real like I was in the show. The price was more than worth it. The session itself was about an hour. It was the perfect amount of time as it is more exhausting than it looks. The room is huge. We went with a group of 4, but the space can accommodate anywhere between 2 - 6 people. They recorded videos of us during the game and afterwards, we watched the video and laughed at our reactions. They even sent us copies of the videos to bring home. This is best for people looking for a unique and fun experience. You essentially get to act as stars in your own game. You can pick your character and weapon to come alive as. It was $225 for 4 people, and a 30 minute long session. The person helping us out was so unenthusiastic but I thought it was kind of hilarious - like he's asking you whether you want to be the ice sword warrior or the huntress with the magical bow in a dead pan voice funny. The videos they provide you afterwards are so fun! I wish they had a subscription service or something because this is absolutely something I could see myself doing once a month or something. My wife and I took our son here for his birthday. It was just the three of us playing together. I thought that was cool we didn't have to play with other people we didn't know. Follow the staff's instructions and you will be okay. We heard a lot of screaming and laughing. I wasn't sure about the screaming part but I am sure whatever game they were playing felt life like. The wait for us was about 20 minutes even though we're told about 35 minutes. It's a lot of fun, but it is expensive. But like my wife safe for the amount of money we would have spent on hosting at our home with a cookout it would have been the same. I definitely recommend this place. That parking garage near this place is was impossible for us to find parking. The red parking garage was just the same but it was a busy weekend for the domain. So we chose the blue parking garage and there was plentiful of parking spaces there. They will sit you down when you're finished and you will get to watch your game both in live view and game mode. If you're putting in an address for your GPS or rideshare, your best shot is to use Kung Fu Saloon Lyft drop-off location in the Domain/Rose Rock area. We didn't do this and used the Esperanza location and got super lost! A fun and cool activity to do while you're in Austin - VR games that are super immersive and all-ages friendly. Regardless of your athletic background, the games are accessible and fun for all types. It's a busy location (especially on the weekends), but there are luckily plenty of time spots if you're trying to squeeze in some fun w/ friends. Even if you don't book a private party, they'll try and accommodate if you show up well enough in advance. Prices are a bit high on the weekends, but it's still fun as a treat. The equipment had some issues - some of the vests had malfunctioning feedback/vibration devices, some of the guns/weapons would not register or were inaccurate on the game, and there were definitely some concerns about hygiene/cleaning of the equipment in between uses. You will definitely sweat playing these games (there are large fans to help with this), so come dressed cool and light. Overall, recommended. read more

I enjoyed how much more spacious and interactive Sandbox VR has to play with props wise as controllers and being with your party, I would definitely have friends and coworkers get together to do a fun shindig at this space. Saw an advertisement on FB and ended up going here. Booked for like a 3 pm for 2 ppl and did Seekers of the Shards I believe. Was about 30 minutes of gameplay and before playing I thought that was short, but after playing it felt like a decent amount of time. They even sent a video of us playing. It was a compilation of what we looked like in real time and then what we saw in the game. We got the package with the Japanese treats in it. Honestly don't think it's worth the price. I think total we paid somewhere like $200. What ever the elite snack box was plus 2 people playing. All in all it was a good time and experience. Would recommend trying. read more

My boyfriend really loves VR and I enjoy killing a zombie here and there, so we decided to check out Sandbox VR before catching our flight back to NYC. This location is in the Domain in Austin. It is a good location as it is on one of the streets with a ton of food options for after. We were the only people here haha it was a funny experience as we went on a tuesday at like 10:45 am, we did the zombie valley one. It was INTENSE since it was just the two of us. I had such a fun time though - I think it would have been easier with a full team of 6 people, but my bf and I had a blast. It was really cool to see our video afterwards. We came by this place which is located at the Domain and I had no idea what this was other than some VR gaming place. The guy asked us if we had a reservation which we obviously did not so asked when was the next drop in and he told us in about 40 minutes. We basically had 40 minutes to understand what this was so I peeked into the rooms and saw blank walls with some fans mounted so that gave me some insight that it would be either some windy location or some skydiving episodes. In less than 10 minutes the guy told us he had a room open up and if we wanted to play now. Without hesitation we did. Thinking this was a glorified laser tag game, I thought there would be other people we would play against but nope it was just us which made me feel better during these Covid times (which apparently people in Austin doesn't seem to acknowledge as I've noticed less than 5% of people wear masks in public). I wouldn't have felt comfortable if i was in a small room with unfamiliar people huffing and puffing next to me. We proceeded to don the wrist and ankle sensors, vest, and helmet with attached microphone so your partner can hear you like firefighters or other rescue personnel. The guy recommended we play Deadwood Mansion which he said was the most popular game BY FAR. During the game, we did bump into each other a few times which freaked us out since we didn't know if it was a real sensation or virtual. I mean during gameplay you are totally immersed into this transformed world so when these worlds collide, you have to be able to differentiate real vs artificially fabricated. And since you do physically move around in the room and shoot, it can make you get a bit sweaty and I definitely felt that. I found out afterwards that the staff will take some videos of you during gameplay so don't do anything foolish like whimper like a baby or lay on the floor in your fetal position when the zombies comes towards you. I found out later that I didn't have to come all the way to Austin to play this because Sandbox VR exists in the bay area in SF, San Ramon, and obviously San Mateo where the headquarters is located. Otherwise they have them in major cities also like Vegas, HK, Chicago, and will soon open in London and Toronto. read more

Took my 8- and 9-year-old boys to the Sandbox VR location at the Domain today, and unfortunately it was not a good experience. They asked for assistance multiple times but continued to have issues with the equipment and overall gameplay throughout the session. One of the best experiences, I've had in a while! Upon arrival, we were greeted with a warm welcome and asked to sign in. I immediately noticed how warm the facility was. We did Deadwood Valley! SO MUCH fun. Our game experience host Rushil added to the value of our experience. Rushil was incredible. very patient, friendly and explained everything in a clear and concise manner, and even joked with us a bit. Once we were all setup with our equipment; wrist, and ankle sensors and vest we were ready to head into our room for headsets, eye wear and weapons. We were in great hands and had an amazing time. My only woe was that it was incredibly hot. I wish that the fans in our room was on because we were all dripping with sweat after our game. There is a storage shelf in the room to keep your personal items while you have a great time! There are videos and photos captured of you in action during your gaming session and provided to you at the end which was a great highlight to the experience! I 10/10 recommend this especially for groups. But not to worry if you wanna do it solo, if you choose a game that others are doing and if there is room you'll be paired with them! Enjoy!! read more

We had a fantastic experience at sandbox VR, here's why: Private game: although it was only two of us, we get to reserve the room to ourselves without extra fee. Accurate sensor: besides a gun, I also used a shield in the game which is based on my hand gestures. The sensor is very sensitive and accurate. It makes me feel like I'm really using an actual shield to do all sorts of stuffs. Great visual: I was screaming a lot during the game because sometimes it's a little too overwhelming seeing that many monsters attacking at the same time. But that's what makes the adrenaline flow!! Sound: I know someone commented that you can hear other players yelling in other games. I was concerned about that at first because when we arrived we can hear two other players yelling in another other room very clearly, however once we put the headsets on, they were able to cancel all the noises! So if yours don't it, check with your guide for another set! Beginner friendly: I normally don't play any video games, this experience was more for my boyfriend. I was slightly concerned about being bad at playing the game. But the game design compensated that: it was easy to catch on and hard to fail. For those more competitive players, they do have a score board at the end where they list everyone's performances and choose the MVP of the day. This is such a cool concept! I give it 5 stars for the customer service and creativity. However the one star missing is from the technical difficulties my boyfriend experienced... The VR wouldn't align properly with his field of vision and Diana (who was amazing!) tried her best to help him. At some point he gave up and just continued on with playing (got a big headache after). At first we though $50 for 30 minutes, a bit short? Not at all! Trust me 30 minutes felt like forever in the Deadwood Mansion. By the end of it, my boyfriend and I were huffing and puffing sweating like crazy! TERRIBLE SOUND. I never write reviews, But this experience was SERIOUSLY LACKING. This is my 3rd visit, first 2 were at the temporary, smaller location across the street. This location is larger but WORSE in many ways. Let me explain: Prices increased from $40 to $45 per person. Small location had 3 people in the lobby, ready to help guests...This location had NO ONE in the lobby to help us. There were several workers who made eye contact with us, but were too busy helping guests in other rooms...so they would quickly scamper away..too busy to even acknowledge us. So after checking ourselves in via their touch screens, we walked around aimlessly looking for the bathrooms...which we never found. So we ventured across the street to a restaurant for that. However, by far the most ANNOYING aspect of the experience was the TERRIBLE SOUND in this venue! Concrete floors, tall ceilings, and a large open environment, basically the WORST design for sound. Each "room" was constructed with scaffolding with no ceiling, and no doors to close..so these areas are more like sections, NOT separate normal rooms. This causes HUGE SOUND PROBLEMS. i.e. You can hear ALL the other guests shouting/screaming/talking in ALL THE OTHER ROOMS. This interferes with YOUR VR experience, when you're trying to listen to what the game is telling/instructing you but all you can hear is the people screaming in the next room! So annoying! Basically, YOU CAN'T HEAR ANYTHING clearly because your headset volume is too low, and the noise pollution outside is too loud. They REALLY need to invest in acoustic panels on their walls & ceiling and/or build separate CLOSED rooms with thick walls and heavy doors you can close to BLOCK NOISE from the other rooms! Also, when our experience was over, the small location used to share behind the scenes photos and videos with us, in addition to the "trailer" of our experience...at this location, they ONLY give you the trailer, and it takes forever to download to your phone because of their slow wifi. Overall, the sound alone and poor customer service makes me never want to go back here. They have some serious issues they need to fix if this company plans to be in the VR business long term. SOUND is half the experience and they've completely ignored it. They just want to shuttle you in like cattle, do your game, then leave and let the next people play. Really disappointed. Stay at home and try VR in your living room, it'll probably be a much better experience and you'll save the $45 per person. Sandbox VR...get your act together. read more

Came as a group of three, and this our first experience with VR. Reserving a spot online went smoothly. They recommend arriving early to go through the setup process, and if you're not familiar with the Domain, I would set aside extra time to park in the garages and walk over. The staff was excellent, informative, and friendly. We were all a bit nervous, but they were good at getting us excited for the experience. For those with glasses, you can't wear them under the VR headgear, but they provide lens inserts from -2 to -7. The game we chose was Deadwood Mansion (the zombie one). The overall experience was super exciting, fun, and trippy. No experiences with motion sickness either. The games and the suits you wear really do draw you in and immerse you into the environment. One of the most immersive VR experiences I've had located snuggly in the domain. I came here with a friend to try this out since neither of us had. I will say assuredly, depending on your game, the scares maybe virtual, but the fun and excitement is certainly real. Atmosphere: The overall place does feel like something futuristic, from the design of the rooms to the equipment setup. It certainly makes for something unfamiliar but intriguing to those whom are curious. Game: Now for the real star of the show, the games themselves can vary in experience but the ones my friend and I chose certainly got the heart pumping. I believe it was called Haunted Manor...the one with zombies. Hey it was October so had to go all the way. I really enjoyed it myself, even being an avid video gamer, I still found certain elements exciting and different. The suits, guns, and feedback you receive from the VR makes it all the better and really takes you away from the world you were in. Added bonus for adding small props like wind to make it feel even more authentic. Can't say much more about the game itself without giving spoilers, but I will say that experience may vary depending on the game chosen and players skill. Even though my party passed I would still easily pick this or another game up to try again. Service: Service is overall very friendly, although I do want to add that they must run a tight ship due to the timing of the games for reserved parties to get the full experience. So if you have a reservation for 2 PM for example, please be sure to arrive no later than 2 PM. My party initially was about 10 minutes late but due to the nature of the experience they offer we had to reschedule. With that said the service is very friendly and helpful in trying to accommodate with what they have. Overall, I really enjoyed my time here with this very different take on a VR experience that you don't often get without highly specialized equipment. I only wish that session times were a bit longer as the excitement left me wanting more and that they had options for single players. With that said though if I have a party or friends interested, I'd be more than happy to recommend this place. read more
