We've been to several Scare for a Cure events and highly recommend this experience. Not only is it for a good cause, but it's also a high quality production. This is not your traditional haunted house, they will touch you and cover you in fake blood. It's a bit far out of the way, so be sure to eat before you go. Also, I would recommend wearing clothes that are comfortable and won't be ruined by fake blood. We didn't plan ahead and forgot our towels, which was a big mistake due to the downpour as we were leaving. read more

The other night me and a few ladies went to scare for a cure. I love what they do here as far as donating the funds to cancer charities. Everyone working is a volunteer, so shout out to them for devoting their time and energy to a good cause. The haunted house was very interactive- lots of walking, crawling and getting blasted with blood. Dress accordingly. (We came in painter suits which helped to an extent but maybe a pancho of some sort would be a better choice! ) The show/ haunted house has a different theme each year , this year they did a Celtic festival , scavenger hunt and stories out of a few books which was a great concept, had you read the books. Nobody in my group had read any book except for Alice in wonderland so we were a bit confused through out the whole thing. Also I didn't find it to scary overall since I was just confused the whole time lol. If your a reader& had read these books, I bet this is 10/10 a great experience. At the start of the haunted house there is a paper and pencil to write down the things you're looking for in the scavenger hunt but the platform in that area wasn't smooth which made writing difficult. Also the pencil was a bit hard to see, not a big deal - just a note for the team. I will return next year as I've heard great things about the past shows. This was our 8th or 9th year going to scare (last Friday night). It's solely to support a breast cancer charity and completely run by a large group of awesome volunteers. It's like a haunted house but with a story and problem solving and you get bloody, scared, surprised, and its overall a great time. You go through the course/story in groups of 6 and we usually try to wear mostly white to show the blood as much as possible. The actors do a great job playing their part and making the experience as great as it is. Highly recommend! read more

Scare for the Cure is about a 60 minute interactive experience that follows a unique storyline each year. It's not a as challenging as as an escape room game but contains puzzles and riddles in which a team of players discover clues, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks in one or more rooms in order to accomplish a specific goal in a limited amount of time to exit. If you have a small group, you'll be joined by strangers to get a group if about 6 people. A party member could be kidnapped for a few minutes to play an active role within the story but will be rejoined with the party within about 5 minutes. Sometimes there's jump scares, sprays of fake blood, water, and crawling so wear old clothes and shoes. Bring a towel or change of clothes although you probably won't need it. There's always one party member that gets a lot of fake blood on them. You can't touch the actors or props, but they can touch you. So, if you react violently to being startled or lightly touched, stay home. There's food and adult beverages for sale at the end. I'm excited to attend Quest Night in spring which is D&D themed. The money goes to a great cause. No photos are allowed. Location is ghost town. In the future, I'd like to see more vendors and some slight ramp transition from room to room in case someone has mobility issues or is in a wheelchair. I'd say this works for a manual wheel chair and someone assisting with those transitions. I think it works great for people who are blind, too, provided that it's interactive. The Good: :: supports a great cause! :: very reasonably priced ($25-30) :: great waiting area while it's your group's turn to go. they make it fun and interactive and have snacks and drinks for sale :: the themes change every year and they keep it interesting that way by making it different. :: it's VERY interactive. you have to run, crawl, walk, and talk your way through the experience. this is what makes it so awesome!!!! it's not just a bunch of rooms with stupid props and cheap scares. it's actually kind of scary at parts, like the one year they had a chainsaw going off. just hearing that made me want to pee my pants. :: they have beer and food for sale! The Bad: :: the fake blood can stain certain types of clothing. be smart and wear crap you couldn't care less about, or make sure it's dark clothing. when i say you will get covered in fake blood, i mean it. you will be covered in it. :: one of the times i went, they were so aggressive with their grabbing that a girl's hand grabbed my face and accidentally knocked out my contact lens. luckily it landed on my cheek but damn that was too close. they need to make sure their actors aren't grabbing people's faces, only arms and legs and clothing. I went to Scare for a Cure this year and last year and it is my favorite new Halloween tradition! It is more expensive than other haunted houses but you get a lot more here. You have a scheduled time for your group so you don't have to stand in a boring 2 hour line which is the best part in my opinion. There is always a story line with the haunt that you follow along with and get to actively participate in and they put a lot of work into the props and costumes so you feel like you really are in this world they have created rather than just being scared. The experience lasts a lot longer than most haunted houses too. I'd say you get to be there about an hour to an hour and a half with the time in the actual attractions and the time you spend being entertained by the actors before the haunted house when they are getting you familiar with the story line. Come ready to go along with the plot inside the attraction or you will ruin it for yourself and others. My friends and I always have a great time because we are willing to interact with the characters, get dirty and bloody, and scream. If you go expecting to just walk through and not be a part of it you won't have as much fun. After you survive the zombies, witches, demons, or whatever evil you find, you can reward yourself with a beer at the Ghost Town Grill and maybe even a burger or funnel cake. I've done scare for a cure for two years now... and it has definitely gotten better in 2010. The best way to describe the haunted house is like being part of a play. Everything is scripted and follows a linear storyline, but it's interactive and you play a part in most of the steps. Some tips: - The waiting area is actually pretty freaky, largely because it's not scripted. Don't let this spook you though, the haunted house is a lot of fun. - Signing up for the newsletter gives you a coupon to use the next year - Do the red level. It's way more fun... This was my first year volunteering at Scare For A Cure and I enjoyed the heck out of it. Everyone is really friendly and fun to work with. I started coming out to help when it was being built. Continued to volunteer on show nights. and helped tear it down. I was looking for a way to spend my days while between jobs (rather than sitting at home staring at the phone, willing employers to call me) and what I found was a lot of fun. I also made some new friends that I probably wouldn't have met otherwise. So what can I tell you about Scare? Well clearly no secrets. I think the number one thing I can tell you is.....BUY YOUR TICKETS ONLINE!, IN ADVANCE! It sold out during the second week so we had to turn people away. While being sold out is great for Scare.org...I know it bummed people out. So buy your tickets in advance! Please! Read the website. There were so many people who had no idea that they'd get dirty and be crawling around. (Closed toe shoes are a good idea. Sparkly rhinestone flip-flops? Not so much.) Or what the theme was. Why is that important? Well the theme in '11 was clown/carnival based. Some people have a clown phobia and didn't know that. Sure it made us laugh. Them? Not so much. You can be a part of Scare! Went to Scare for a cure this past Sat. Night. Our group did the haunted adventure and the boneyard maze. They must have worked out the opening weekend kinks because we had a great time!! I loved the story line and theme as well as the idea of holding actual artifacts and clues to figure out how to save Fairytale land. The communication between actors/sections was obvious as one member of our party was drunk and a little challenging and they switched guides and helped us get through successfully! Two sections were not great if your claustrophobic...I didn't think I was but it tested me!! More creepy and fun than scary and you will look like you've been in a bloody accident before it's over. Old clothes (including shoes ) is a must! Boneyard maze was ok. We ran through too fast and only saw two scary people so we went back in and got lost a little more to get out $ worth...much better. read more

Last night was my first time to Scare For A Cure: Zombie Wasteland, and am I glad I did it! This is not one of the old-style walk-through types of haunted houses with creatures jumping out and startling you. Au contraire! This is a hands on interactive haunt with lots of characters, flames, guns, crazy mercenaries, plenty of blood, psycho doctors, and all those zombies! They WILL touch you and you will want to take a shower....if you make it out. So great, highly recommended! Next year I hope to attend the 3 hour interactive night. I'm not reviewing the good things they do, because I love that they do this for a great cause. I'm reviewing the actual haunted house itself and its potential to frighten guests. We visited on opening night with the red level tickets everyone suggested. We weren't called to start our tour until about 20 minutes after the time we purchased tickets for, and at that point we sat in a barn/cabin area for another hour while "camp counselors" had us make paper bag puppets (still haven't figured out why) and threw popsicle stick bombs at the ceiling. When we were finally summoned to start our trip, we were all tired, hungry, thirsty, and not at all sated by the $1 cans of soda or sugary snacks available for purchase. Perhaps it's because we came on opening night and the kinks were still being worked out, but there wasn't a fright to be had on the tour. If I hadn't been with a group of people with a great sense of humor, we would've all left feeling like we'd wasted almost three hours of our time. We had some laughs, but the only time any of us jumped was when we were scaring each other at the very end. And, for me, when I couldn't get all the red dye off my skin in the shower when we got home. Judging by reviews here and elsewhere, the last two years had some legitimate scares. This year, not so much. Unless you have a fear of slightly cannibalistic children. read more

This years even is great! One of the absolute best haunted houses I have been to and just puts that one by the mall to shame. There had to be about 100 actors and month and months of prop work created for this. The makeup and effects were amazing. Wear shoes since there is some walking in rough terrain, and this is not just a walk through a house but an escape from a small isolated camp through a zombie infested world! You can tell the script was well worked on as you find yourself following your guide to safety. The entire story feels interactive and exciting. If you only do 1 haunted house this year make it this one, I am going to go back again, it was really just that much fun! What a great haunted house! This is the second haunt of theirs that I have enjoyed, the first one being last year's awesome World of Horrorcraft (where you were trapped in a videogame). This year was another win, and I think it was slightly enhanced by the "remote" location. By remote, I mean it was about 8-9 miles from downtown, but it was far enough out to see the stars clearly and feel like you were far, far from help. (SpooooOOOOoooky!) The make-up and costuming is great, the effects are good, the setting is really impressive, and the acting varied from good to outstanding. I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but I will say that it's important to pay close attention to the instructions and the names of characters in the dialogue. It's worth mentioning that even if you don't buy the red level tickets, you're going to get some action. There's running and crawling and scurrying, so be sure to wear comfy shoes, and ladies might want to avoid wearing skirts (laddies might, too-- whatever works for you). I came out covered in fake blood (tastes like Red Hots!), and feeling like I had gotten another great experience from them. Recommended, bigtime. Go do it before it's too late! read more

I have to thank Cammy for introducing me to Scare for a Cure last year. This haunt is done balls out, seriously! This is not just an Austin, Texas haunted house event, that's interactive, detailed, well-thought out and very fun, it's also a really unique approach to raising both money and awareness for local charities "one scream at a time." Scare for a Cure is a non-profit group that seems to have an avant-garde effort behind their productions, taking popular cultural concepts and applying neoteric facets to make the audience's experience not just great, but bad-ass fine! I went here for the 2009 event when they had moved to Britannia Manor and proceeds went to battle breast cancer. So y'know, it's all for a good cause and well worth the tickets. You know you're having a good time when you physically contribute to the experience, not just walking through, but going beyond and having to run and crawl and climb and, F'yeah! I totally recommend this to anyone looking for a fun Halloween Event in Austin. This ran about an hour long and just a heads up, you WILL get messy. This is my second year going to Scare For a Cure and had a blast! It sets itself apart from typical haunted house parks because its fully interactive, story-driven experience. Guests are encouraged to take part in the narrative by running, crawling, using props, being sprayed by blood/ooze, and answering questions. My wife and I have been to Scare for a Cure every year since it began in 2007. Its become a Halloween tradition for us that we look forward to every year. I was surprised by some of the negative reviews on Yelp. Is it the scariest haunted house around? Probably not. But if you get into the spirit and play your role (yes everyone plays a role at scare) it's a hell of a lot of fun. It is not the typical haunted house where you are just a spectator walking through and people jumping out trying to scare you. There is a story being played out and you are part of that story. Most people go in groups since you go through the haunt in groups of six to eight people. My wife and I have mostly gone alone and they put us with a smaller group of four. I don't feel this takes anything away from the experience, possibly it makes it even more fun. Also, yes you will get covered in blood (fake blood) so don't wear your best clothes. You may also want to at least bring a shirt to change into so you don't get the fake blood all over your car seats, or just purchase one the white cover-all jump suits they sell to protect your clothing and you can remove it before getting into you car. Obviously we always have a lot of fun or we wouldn't keep coming back, and its for a great cause. read more

Each group had a mission and certain members of the group had certain objectives which led to the survival of the group itself. OMG this was absolutely the BEST haunt I've ever been on!! As some other reviewers said, go for the red level tickets! On the way back to the car, our group seemed to be way more amped about the whole experience than the people on the bus who didn't go red level. You get messy, but it's sooo worth it! I left with blood up to my forearms, completely splattered, and with slime dripping off my glasses. Since it's over, I'm not afraid to post some spoilers! This isn't a normal haunted house. You're out in the middle of nowhere in a half finished construction site, which lends itself well to the post-zombie-apocalypse atmosphere. You're running through the forest, your guide gets eaten, you jump into the back of a box van (seriously!), locked in with a semi-caged zombie, and driven through the crowd of -- scratching, clawing, pounding -- zombies to a new location where it all just gets even more interesting. It wasn't piss your pants scary, but it was a BLAST! I'm writing this three weeks after we went, and I'm still excited about it...seriously! I was really, very underwhelmed. I felt more like I was being led through a poorly acted b-movie than getting a haunted experience. The blood was over the top (and the gore not enough). Member of my party were way more focused on getting the blood out of the eyes and mouth than what was going on, the actors (whom I know are volunteer) could not remember their lines, did I mention the over use of blood? The smell of it was dreadful, I nearly vomited. There was absolute nothing to get my blood pressure up and i have an anxiety disorder. That's right. They couldn't scare someone who is already perpetually afraid. For $40, this was 100% not worth it. I would have rather just donated money. read more

I had a really great experience here Friday night. It's a wonderful concept and the actors did a great job with keeping the story going. We did the Red Level, which was worth it. This does mean that you will get dirty and bloody (which is awesome), so wear old clothes. The actors do touch you, but not in an aggressive way. Also, there is running and crawling but no worries if you're not in good shape. One thing that is definitely important to note is that once you enter the haunt, be in the moment. Don't think about the acting, don't think about feeling silly, just be part of it. You'll have a lot more fun that way, I guarantee it. Do listen to the instructions and do try to keep track of the story. The whole experience once we entered the house, I want to say, lasted about an hour. They did a wonderful job with the set, with making things super creepy, and with using basic fears (like claustrophobia, bugs, darkness, etc) to get everyone rattled, at the very least. I was very impressed with the volunteers and their efforts and I look forward to going back next season! (PS it's all for charity. How cool is that?) read more

I visited this haunt last year, and it was a fun experience. Loved the winding nature of the haunt, with various transportation. At one point, we got into a moving icecream truck while being chased down the street by evil clowns! Scare for a Cure is a non-profit and its funds go to breast cancer research. Some of the acting could be better and/or scarier, but for the most part, I loved this haunt. This year, they are moving to Ghost Town in Manor, TX. It's a bit of a ways outside of Austin, probably the biggest downside, but the set is interesting, incorporated into the remains of an old horror film set. Scare for a Cure is AMAZING. This was my first year to go to Scare and it was a lot of fun! All the actors/characters there were into their role and made the whole experience really fun. There is a little "pre-show" that fit with the theme instead of the traditional waiting line. You are immersed into the story being told and all your actions affect the outcome, so in effect, every group has a little bit different of a story. The entire time you are there, you are a part of the story, not just someone on the sidelines watching things unfold. If you go, DEFINITELY get the red level tickets. You get fake blood all over you and it's extremely fun. Some tips when you go: -wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty -wear shoes that you can run and crawl in (tennis shoes are the best option) -the fake blood should dry by the time you leave, but bring a few old bed sheets just in case to cover the seats of your car -suspend all disbelief and be apart of the story For the people who are thinking about this or House of Torment, I would recommend this over Torment any day! Although it may not have as many "booscares" it is for sure more fun and memorable than Torment. Some parts of Scare were really freaky this year and make you kind of uncomfortable (but in a good way I suppose). And that's another good thing about Scare for a Cure. It is fully interactive and there IS contact with the actors. You may be thinking.. do I really want them touching me? Yes, yes you do. It makes it freaky and fun and different than anything else out there. I will definitely be coming back next year! It is worth every cent (especially since it all goes to charity)! read more

FUN! FUN! FUN! This interactive haunted house is worth your time and money. Lots of crawling and running, cool special effects, incredible costumes. Not to mention the fact that your entry fee goes to the Breast Cancer Research Center of Austin. It's in a location (west of 360, just north of Lake Austin) that is close enough to the city to get to and from easily, but far enough out to make you feel alone, and unable to call for HELP! This was my first time to this haunted house!! So much fun, lots of interaction, and great props. I would recommend you do the RED level to get the full experience. went to the quest night last night and had a blast. i was roped in at almost the last minute and had no idea what was going on so had to make up a character and story on the fly and did not have time to make a costume but all of the cast was amazing and helpful and the environment was great. i really hope that they do this again soon. things that i would improve or work on include some game mechanics/quest specifics, length of time given for the event (we had a main quest and individual quests and only 3 hours to do both--maybestart earlier so the game can be explained) and a few more pre game guidelines/emails in a short format for those of us who are last minuted or just don't have the time/attention span to read the whole thing. i would have killed to have a flashlight or a glowstick. read more

Wow. What a terrifyingly terrific experience! This is not a haunted house. This is an escape from a protected base camp to sanctuary; a zombie free land! The whole thing took about 45 minutes and we started a bit late. No big deal, it gave us a chance to talk to the Mayor, Rico, and the Fortuneteller for clues. There were also clues posted on the message wall at the base camp. If you're reading this you probably know that you will get blood all over yourself and you will run, duck, crawl, and dodge zombies! Make sure not to wear your best clothes. The blood even got all over my sneakers. Bummer. I'd give them 10 out of 5 stars if I could! read more
