Recently hired Ryan (owner of Sanctuary Tree) to do some major work on my trees. Ryan and his team did outstanding work and provided excellent customer service. The work included: Trimming and fertizilizing a huge silver maple, removing several boxelders, and grinding out stumps.
The Bid:
I was initially attracted to Sanctuary Tree because of their 5-Star rating, and the fact that he lives a couple of blocks away from me. I prefer to support small local business, and he's practically a neighbor. I set up an appointment with Ryan, which ended up being an in depth consultation from which I learned more than I ever knew about trees. He is truly passionate about his work and is an educated arborist. He walked my entire property with me, listening to my concerns and offering his insight. He isn't pushy with unnecessary work and he gives it to you straight. Several days later I received a detailed quote from him. He knew I was undecided about certain work, so his quote included all possible scenarios that we discussed. I got back to him with exactly what I wanted, and he reworked his quote to include only the work I wanted done.
I received several quotes from other companies. One company stopped by my property while I wasn't home, and gave me a quote based on my conversation with their receptionist. This automatically disqualified them for me, since I had specific concerns which could only be described in an on-site face to face discussion. Another larger company met me at my property to discuss the work. He seemed like a good guy, but when I asked him if he would be on site during the job, he revealed that his job is to obtain the work and his foreman would be on site. This turned me off to them because I didn't like the idea of a stranger showing up at my house to do the work, I was afraid of the "bait and switch" between a smooth talking salesman and an indifferent foreman and crew. Ultimately I went with Ryan because I knew what I was getting. I think he only has one crew which he leads, and I liked that I'd be dealing with him the whole way.
The Work:
We set a date for the work to begin. However mother nature and the city of Denver's street replacement crew had other plans. Ryan and his team were very accommodating and flexible with multiple rounds of rescheduling to work around these factors. Tree day finally arrived, and I was working at home so I got to watch from start to finish.
By far their biggest task was trimming my giant silver maple. They blocked off the area with cones and got to work. My expectation was that they'd get up there in some kind of lift and go at it with a chainsaw. Instead two guys set lines in the tree and started climbing. They made precise cuts, mostly with a hand saw. They were equipped with a mini chainsaw, but seemed to use it only when needed. They tested the integrity of the limbs, and cut away all of the dead they could find. Ryan was down below managing the operation, while other crew members put the failed limbs into the chipper. It was fascinating to watch these dudes climb so high in my tree and do their thing.
My biggest fear in this process was that I would hire someone who would just butcher my tree with a chainsaw, or that they would only cut the tree to city code and not worry much about the rest. I've definitely seen some "trimmed" trees where most of the major branches have been hacked off and the tree hardly has any leaves left. Thankfully my experience was the exact opposite. My tree still looks like a full and healthy tree, but without all of the dangerous loose and dead stuff hanging in there. These guys are true pros and knew exactly where to cut.
The removal of the boxelders also went smoothly. One of the guys noticed me out there collecting pieces of wood that looked like they'd be good firewood. He offered to cut up some parts of the boxelder trunks for me if I wanted. That was really cool of him and much appreciated.
Also I had another small tree that was not included in the scope of the work. Ryan took it upon himself to cut away a few suckers and give it a quick prune. He didn't have to do that, but that just speaks to the kind of guy he is.
The Crew:
Ryan's team consisted of himself and about 4 other young men. They were all really good guys, and very friendly. They were courteous to me and my family, as well as my neighbors. They love what they do and they work well together. I would've offered them some beer if they weren't operating chainsaws on my property :)
The Result:
Complete satisfaction from start to finish. They did a full clean-up as well, you wouldn't know they were here. My neighbors have been complimenting our tree, and asking Ryan for quotes. Sanctuary Tree was in line with the other quotes I received. Though they were not the cheapest, I felt as though they offered the most value with how thorough they were with every task (no shortcuts). Thank you to Ryan and team! read more
