I wasn't sure what to expect when it came to Mexican food in Toledo, but I came to find out it's excellent! Well, at the very least, San Marcos is--can't speak for the rest! I got a big order of rice, beans, tortillas, chips and salsa, and some guac. Boring, I know, but I like to make my own mini tacos. The flavors were on point, especially the beans and the salsa. My one small gripe was that I had to pay for the chips and salsa, while my mom's partner who spent about the same amount on his burrito, got them for free. Might have just been a mistake but I thought it was odd. The entrance was through a small market which was interesting. It was a surprise when I got to the dining area and the ceiling opened up into a much larger space complete with gorgeous murals. Would be happy to return if I'm in the area again. read more

Stopped by for a Mexican breakfast. Something different this morning which was totally awesome. We were settled immediately and our waiter took our drink order along with our food order. We were very satisfied with our breakfast and all breakfast orders are only ten dollars. A very good deal in today's world. In my opinion, San Marcos on Broadway is the most authentic Mexican food in the Toledo area! I lived in SoCal for 2-plus decades and became very spoiled by all the authentic Mexican eateries. The market / restaurant combination is a fantastic concept. Restaurant service is always very good, even when it is packed wall-to-wall with people. Every staff member I have interacted with has been very friendly and knowledgeable of menu selections. The murals painted on the walls, ceiling, and air ducts are amazing - all done by a local artist. Other decor nicely accentuates the murals perfectly. Prices are quite reasonable for food quality and portion sizes. San Marcos also has outdoor seating available. In my opinion, San Marcos on Broadway is hands down the most authentic Mexican restaurant in Toledo. read more

It's the closest thing to authentic Mexican cuisine you'll find in Toledo. The lengua tacos are worth the drive downtown alone. Very good margaritas too. Every time my wife and I have been there the service has been fantastic. Quick and attentive. They have added a bunch of new murals that add a fun touch to the atmosphere. Just went there for lunch. While the food was fantastic, I ordered the San Marcos burrito, which is on the list of lunch specials at the entrance of the restaurant for $9.96, and they charged me full price ($14.00). I brought this to their attention, and they refused to change the price to what was on the special board. I even got up and showed them the advertised price, prominently displayed on the sign they placed at the entrance of their own restaurant. When I ordered, I asked for the, "San Marco's burrito, the one that's on special." This place does an amazing business. I probably eat at San Marcos at least once every other week. I would always go with a group of 3 or more people, so the total sales from each visit would be $45-$50 dollars plus the tips (another $10.00+++ for the waiter/waitress). No more... they just blew $1,200.00 in annual sales for $5 bucks. Real smart. This is one way great restaurants go out of business. They screwed up and refused to own it. I based my order on their advertised special and they wouldn't honor it. The sign was still on display when I left, so I can't say it was a mistake on their behalf - seems pretty intentional if the problem isn't rectified after it was pointed out. Once amazing and authentic taco joint; so disappointing now. I was hungry for menudo. It was satisfying but underwhelming. We asked about the Mexican Pizza which was described as a layered dish with crispy fried flour tortillas. What we received was a Mexican Pizza Quesadilla. I took one bite and couldn't eat any more. Called and put in a reservation for 14 people days prior to a Saturday reservation at 6 pm, specifically telling them we had an event at 8. I called the day before to add 4 people to the reservation at 6, they said that was not a problem. My party arrives at 6, they proceed to tell us we made the reservation for 6:45. We then have to wait for them to find separate tables to put our party at, they got 8 out of the 18 people sat. They then move us to a bigger table for 14, another group had to sit at a different table with a table between us. As we're speaking with management and they continue to say the reservation was at 6:45, I look down and right on a paper it says our last name and 6 pm. The whole time they were lying, we did not get food until 7:30 after arriving at 6, we were late to our event after being assured we would not be. This place is so beyond unprofessional, the bartender and other employees gave us dirty looks, complained about our party 6 feet from us. Definitely excelente like always. I first went because of recommendation from a friend who always hits up San Marcos when in Toledo. Me too and I always recommend it! I love getting food at the store that I miss from Mexico. I mean there is a butcher, baker, produce, candies, etc. In the restaurante - The pineapple meal with all sorts of shrimp, meat, flavorful chili and queso with pineapple sweetness was delicious! I couldn't decide between that, the molcajete and tamales, but I definitely wasn't dissappointed! I love they have corn tortillas that are good. Working downtown, I met a friend for lunch at San Marcos Restaurant. Arriving just after 11:30am, we walked through the impressively well-stocked Mexican groceries section of the store to reach the restaurant entrance. Surprised by the long line of people outside, we discovered that most were waiting for takeout orders, and once we got in the correct line, the hostess sat us at a table very quickly. Our waiter, Alfonso, came over a few minutes later to take first our drink orders, then our meal orders, where I selected a burrito with pork. With a regular soda and tax, my bill came to $12.03, which is pretty typical for lunch downtown. The décor in the restaurant is fantastic, with beautiful Aztec-inspired murals painted on the walls and ceilings. Additionally each of the chairs was carved and vividly painted with its own unique design, while the tables contained colourful individually painted scenes. However I did not have long to take in the restaurant's ambiance, as the crack kitchen staff had our meals ready exceptionally quickly! On receiving our orders, the first thing we were impressed with was the generous portions. After that, we were impressed by the great taste, especially the perfectly seasoned pork on my burrito! Fantastic food! It's been a while since I've had good Mexican food and this place exceeded my expectations. The service was quick and everyone was friendly. I ordered a Piña with my meal which tasted pretty fresh and was delicious (not overly sweet). I ordered the taco, rice, and beans platter with an extra taco. I was not prepared for the large portions and probably shouldn't have ordered the extra taco. That being said, the al pastor and barbacoa tacos were excellent and the beans and rice were absolutely authentic/delicious. Absolutely love San Marcos. Sure, it's in sorta ghetto area, and you'll sometimes get those ghetto-a$$ customers who swear at the staff and hosts up and down. (Which by the way happened to me when I brought my wife and daughter for the first time, after swearing to them how good and legit they were.. Needless to say, it will *not* be the family's first pick) But if I'm with coworkers or friend or even by myself, I wouldn't hesitate to come back. The thing that surprised most about Toledo was the amount of very authentic ethnic restaurants it has. San Marcos is definitely one of them. I guess one could say Toledoans were spoiled when it comes to likes of good Mexican food, Lebanese food and a few others. Sure, you can find half decent Tex-Mex places all around the States, but finding good authentic Mexican places are surprisingly difficult, at least in my experiences. Considering I couldn't find a single decent authentic Mexican place when I stayed in Maryland a couple years, being recommended San Marcos from a coworker who's never lived outside of this town was at first skeptical, but at the end, a very pleasant surprise. I've since come back several times to try a few different items. Outside from the bad family visit I mentioned above, all my experience has been very positive. I guess there's a good reason why the place has expanded to 3 or 4 different locations around town. Caldo de res is my go-to meal, but last time I was there, the pork chop especial was *A.MAZING* It was truly an amazingly tender, well seasoned pork chop. Pretty reasonable price too.
