9/10 Great sushi spot honestly the best sushi I've had in Salinas so far! Starting off with the salad, and it was a pleasant surprise. The portion was generous, the veggies were crisp, and I loved all the little additives that gave each bite a different flavor sometimes tangy, sometimes a little sweet. It made something simple feel refreshing and unique. The sashimi was the real star. Every cut was precise, clean, and incredibly fresh none of that chewy or uneven slicing you sometimes see elsewhere. Every slice had that melt-in-your-mouth quality, and you could tell the fish was handled with care. The Tekka Maki was another favorite. A smaller roll, but perfectly rolled and balanced, fresh from the first bite to the last. Definitely a staple always in my book. Service was another highlight. The servers were quick, efficient, and genuinely kind, making the whole experience smooth and enjoyable. Food came out in a timely manner without feeling rushed. Ambiance-wise, I'll admit it's not the coziest place. It was clean, but the lighting felt a bit off and the seating was arranged in an unusual way. There were also quite a few menus displayed on the walls, which gave it a slightly cluttered vibe. That said, the most important part the food was excellent, so it's easy to look past the small details. If you're looking for fresh, quality sushi in Salinas, this is absolutely the place to go. Fresh fish, precise preparation, and service that makes you feel welcome. I'll definitely be back!

As always service was great and the food was delicious! The feel of the restaurant is old school and refreshing. No frills just super delicious food. My favorite sushi place for sure! The Harley Davidson roll is it. Thank me later!

    911 with "avocado"
    Jul R.

Ordered the 911. It comes with: inside: spicy tuna. Top: salmon, avocado , spicy sauce, habanero fish eggs Requested no "spicy sauce" and was not exactly what was given to us. See picture below for reference. Pointed out to the female server that the roll was lacking avocado. Female waitress said "that is how it comes and" Also, was missing the fish eggs. After requesting, the fish eggs were given on the side. What a huge disappointment!!! It was on 6/13/2025 friday 12pm. I have never had a problem with the food the many times i have eaten here. New staff?? Either way, unsatisfactory. Will stick to coming on the weekends. Seems like the service is better.

I've been craving samurai's sushi for ever. Their mortal kombat and pink lady rolls are mandatory. Service is great and it's a great location. If u like sushi or if u don't just come try it.

I love a combination of great value and great quality. I had two large beers and saki along with spicy hamachi roll and spicy yellowtail roll. Staff was so nice and great. Rolls were amazing and beer was ice cold. Vibe was great and can't wait to go back.

Been wanting to try this place for a while.. finally did and was so disappointed The way the dishes are prepared aren't well thought the agedashi tofu is soaked in sauce couldn't finish it fast enough before it turned into mush, seaweed salad was mostly garnish under to make it look like a lot for the price it is its not worth it and the veg sushi I ordered came with loads of ginger inside of it, I dislike ginger a lot in the menu said nothing about ginger being inside but instead had onions.. unless onion means ginger to them ? It's deseiving .. then at the end I know I ordered the 8$ veggie roll and on the tab it said 12$ I brought up all concerns and they did fix it quickly for sure but with the portion sizes and the price I don't feel it's worth it.. they themselves are great people seems very family like in there but I've tried better at other places unfortunately

Keep this restaurant open forever because it is my favorite of all time. I have spent numerous big moments at this restaurant and keep coming because of how cozy the restaurant is and delicious the food is. 10/10 would recommend always

The food is only okay. I've heard good things about the place and when I finally tried it. I was disappointed.

Is there currently a happy hour menu? If so, what time is happy hour? (I know a lot of restaurants changed their menus and hours during COVID)…

I have never had sushi, but I love Japanese food and some of the sushi rolls on their menu look great, so this may be a stupid question but I truly don't know, is their sushi that has crab and shrimp cooked or raw. Or can I get cooked fish in sushi?

Shrimp & crab are cooked but the crab is imitation crab meat mostly.

But I think that is about to change. I was at the Farmer's Market that happens right outside this place on Saturdays and I ventured in for an iced tea. What I found was super friendly service. They said I could sit outside at the tables to enjoy my beverage - even if that was all I purchased. That was so cool of 'em that I decided to try a cheeseburger. It's a pretty good burger! We recently had a slew of cloudy, chilly rainy days in Nov. 2025 so today seemed warm and the cheeseburger had a summery char-grilled flavor, perfectly cooked and juicy. They bring everything on the side so you can choose how much you want of everything - lettuce, generous serving of sliced tomatoes and onions. I just have to remember to hold the mayo next time. Some of the outdoor seats have umbrellas and some don't so you can decide if you like shade or sun. They also have heated tables (firepits) for evening dinners. Server came and checked on me twice and when I asked for a to go cup for my tea, she filled the to go cup for me rather than just making me pour what I had left into it. We normally do takeout and they have unique Mexican options from Oaxaco that are healthy Blue Zone inspired dishes alongside the more traditional Mexican options. Plus perennial faves that carried over from the previous owner like real roasted turkey. This is a cool place with solid options to suit many tases and the best part is the super friendly service. I'm going to make a note to come back soon.

We ordered avocado toast, French toast, banana pecan pancake, house potatoes, and an Aperol spritzer. My avocado toast was served on a single very thick piece of bread, which had a very generous amount of avocado smash and was topped off with this delightful and fresh arugula salad. I added an over easy egg for an extra charge that was the perfect balance. The house salad was simple with butter lettuce, cherry tomatoes, radish, cucumber, with a light lemon house dressing that brought the salad together. It was refreshing. The French toast is pretty standard. Nothing that particularly stood out. The banana pecan pancake was delicious and shared with everyone at the table. The house potatoes were extra crispy on the outside but soft on the inside, which I found particularly satisfying. Overall, we had a pleasant experience and found Portabello's to be a good brunch spot in Salinas. The service was fast, the food portions were big, the food tasted fresh, and it was a nice ambiance. Being back in town, I had to give it a try after 15+ years being away. What a let down honestly. We were seated right away which was appreciated. It was about 10am on a Wednesday and we arrived just before the big rush it seemed. To drink, we ordered waters and orange juice and coffee. A whole coffee carafe was left on our table which was a bit of a surprise and the orange juice as advertised tasted freshly squeezed. Before ordering our food, my husband began asking the waiter about gluten free pancakes or waffles (since such was advertised online in a review from 11yrs ago) and before he could even finish the question the waiter cut him off to explain all the pancake and waffle options. My husband kindly asked again and was told they didn't have any specific gluten free options. That's ok, he ordered their Bacado omelette and instead of toast on the side he asked for a side of fruit. I ordered their Cinnamon Bread French Toast and a side of 1 scrambled egg and 1 sausage. I was told the sausage only comes in 2 or 4, and so I chose 2. When the food arrived, I immediately thought this all looks ok. And the taste was just the same. The omelette was not fluffy like you'd expect a highly rated restaurant omelette to be. The side of fruit came in a condiment cup and had 1 grape as well as 3 pieces of other fruit. The hash browns were sad looking, pretty pale and absolutely no crunch. My husband even added salt which was sad and rare to watch him do. My French toast was ok, kind of soggy and didn't have any caramelization or crunch on the outside whatsoever. It's definitely cinnamon toast vs a cinnamon roll French toast and was nothing special. The sausage was the best part which says a lot. I wouldn't come back here because there's infinitely better options minutes away.
