Samurai is a great spot to grab fresh sushi or take the family for hibachi. I have been many times, and while the service can be hit or miss, the food is always amazing. Especially the sushi rolls. This time I ordered the Amazing roll, Phoenix roll and Edo roll. All 8 pieces. Admittedly, it was a little too much for one sitting, but everything still tasted great the next day at home for lunch. Everything was very fresh, and the flavors were in perfect combination. This place is nice and spacious, and a great place to sample sushi choices either for lunch or dinner. Anyway, I was warmly greeted at the front and had some sushi by myself in a pretty empty place. It was an exceptional experience! The sushi and soup I got were very good, as was the tea. Service was very prompt and friendly the whole time. I went again with co-workers a few weeks later and all four of us had a similarly excellent time. That time I got the teriyaki chicken bento box. Usually go to the Hibachi place in West Bend, but this spot is close to our house. On this night, my wife and myself took my two daughters, 13 and 18, and their two friends to dinner. The restaurant itself is in a strip mall, but the inside is cool. Definitely has a hibachi feel, but not as much fun and energy as some other hibachi places. We sat at the hibachi table with another family, not unusual. Service was not fast, but not overly slow. For starters we had a salad with clear onion soup. Tasty. I ordered tempura. As far as I know it is supposed to come with shaved ginger and wasabi on the side. None of the ginger. She was really really busy with a large group. I don't get the "slightly above average" consensus. I sort of stumbled across Samurai last year when I had errands to run in Glendale, and it was love at first bite. I went back several times, and it edged out my previous favorite, the very popular Rice N Roll, by virtue of its unusually large portions of very good sushi. I took home, for dinner, as much as I ate for lunch; if I really like a dish, I don't mind repeating the experience 6:hours later. I can recommend 4 of the rolls: salmon skin, eel and cucumber, spicy tuna, and shrimp tempura. One more thing: I'm allergic to crabmeat, and whenever I try a new seafood place I'm a little bit cautious. (Years ago, in crabmeat-infested San Francisco, I ordered what was supposed to be a very elegant shrimp salad and got a very nasty case of hives.) But the woman behind the takeout counter was completely reassuring. Unbelievable Service - Left Before We Even Got Started! My recent experience at Samurai Sushi was so appalling that I walked out before our entire party had even arrived. I had reserved a table for four at the hibachi, and two of us arrived early and were seated at 7:40 PM. From the moment we were spoken to by our blonde waitress, it was clear we were dog sh*t to her. When she asked what we wanted to drink, I requested a Coke, to which she curtly responded with a condescending, "Pepsi," as if I should have known. I then asked for a Dr Pepper, and she rolled her eyes before walking away. The family next to us, who were enjoying sushi and soup, seemed to have better service from a different waitress. The waitress returned with our drinks at 7:48 PM and asked what our two other friends, who hadn't arrived yet, wanted to eat. When I told her I didn't know, she rolled her eyes again and asked what I wanted. I said, "I'm going to do the hibachi," to which she sarcastically gestured towards the hibachi station seeming to imply: "no duh." I then specified sirloin steak. When my friend took a moment to order chicken, the waitress responded impatiently, demanding to know exactly what we wanted. She seemed irritated when I couldn't immediately provide the orders for our friends who were at that point parking. She rudely insisted that she needed the information to "get things started in the back." Feeling utterly disrespected and demeaned, we decided to leave before our friends even sat down. As we exited, I informed the hostess about the rude treatment, and all she could muster was a quick "oh no. I'm sorry". The blonde waitress watched us leave, seemingly indifferent. People can have bad days, but that doesn't excuse treating customers poorly, especially in the service industry. I called the restaurant afterward, still upset, and spoke to a woman who said she would get the manager. After a brief hold, she told me the manager was busy and to call back later. For a restaurant that just lost four hibachi diners--especially when only ten other people were present--you'd think a competent manager would prioritize understanding why they lost business. I have never left a restaurant due to poor service until now. Samurai Sushi, do better. It's clear from other reviews that the food might be good, but with service like this, it's not worth it. The blonde-haired waitress's behavior was unacceptable, and management needs to address the consistent complaints about poor service. I will never return. read more

I have been on the hunt for the best sushi rolls of the Midwest since I moved here from California, and this place gave me hope. I ordered the Rock N Roll, Rocky Mountain Roll, and Las Vegas Roll. I'm a big fan of cooked rolls with cream cheese since I am always cautious of raw fish when I try new places, and Samurai's options had fantastic flavor. The Rock N Roll was a raw fish option that pleasantly surprised me. It tasted fresh and had the perfect addition of crunch. You can easily split one entree, unless you're a hungry wolf and need it all for yourself. My favorite is miso soup, angry dragon roll and jasmine tea. The kids love the beef fried rice (would feed 2-3 adults especially if you have a starter). Sake will make the meal topped off perfectly. Walking up to Samurai, I was hesitant. A strip mall Japanese restaurant, cross my fingers. But I was pleasantly surprised by my experience. We chose not to sit at a grill table, having a child with us, opting for a regular seating. I ordered the hibachi vegetable dinner, and the tofu bumped this review from a 3 to 4 star! I've been to places that butcher the tofu (ironic pun intended) but this Samurai does it right with the texture and consistency of the tofu, plus the seasoning. It must have been marinating for awhile! A small mushroom soup and side salad comes with the dish, and both of those were pretty standard, nothing noteworthy. But the amount of food for $13 is remarkable! The tempura roll was tasty, and reasonably priced. My suggestion of improvement would be to clean up the hallway by the bathroom. There were a ton of boxes and containers all over, leaving the area messy and unkempt. And any kind of decluttering the front area by the waiting booths would make the interior lighter. read more

I didn't have my Card on me , but was okay with a simple water, but proceeded to tell someone I was with, they could order it for me and give it to me... (what was the logical sense of carding me; then?) forgot our soup and salad, even though less than 4 customers in the restaurant itself, and also sat around eating and gossiping about themselves on the floor while me and the few customers were here. I've been to this place a few times before. It's always had decent food at a price I expect for sushi/hibachi. Normally I'd rate it around 3 stars, however my last experience was terrible. I was with a party of 4 and we arrived for an early dinner. We were seated promptly but we could tell our server wished he was someplace else. He was sitting a few tables down from us when we were arrived and looked pretty unhappy when we sat down. When we didn't order right away he threw a few heavy sighs our way before lumbering off. Only to return two mins later to reenact the event. When we were ready to order he was angry with me for asking a question about substituting noodles for the rice. If it wasn't for the other people in my party, who hadn't had lunch and were super hungry I would've left. He had his earbuds in the entire time. Needless to say the interaction made the entire experience poor and to top it off the food wasn't great. Lunchtime review seemed busy for a Monday 1:00. My sister and I were seated quickly and drink orders were taken. We were seated next to a loud talker. Ugh. You know the type... They are usually in a car or walking with the bluetooth earpiece. But in a restaurant???? Awww cawwm on!! Other tables had conversations, but you don't need to project your public address. I for one would like a choice in what I eavesdrop in. They had a selection of 5 Saki to choose from along with Japanese and domestic beers. We had shared a sashimi 10 piece and a plate of 3 rolls. (see pic) Both came with salads. The decorations are nice the booths looked cozy with good use of space. The east wall is running out of space for Polaroid birthday pictures. Salads were good. We finished then, we had a wait for the main course as they were busy. I got up to check the bar and only one guy working with 3 customers in back before I sat down the meals came Spicy tuna roll although large was not very spicy to me. The yellowtail and eel and cucumber roll were better. The sashimi plate was delicious. Green tea ice-cream was very good. Service was attentive and friendly. So so service. My salmon didn't taste fresh. Normally salmon at that price point at any restaurant tastes fresh. They wouldn't do a simple noodles for rice substitution. To be completely honest, this won't be the most accurate review, but I'll have to touch it up with more info later. I work close enough to Samurai that my co-workers and I often order their lunch special. As a result, I can't deliver the most precise review. From what I have had, their lunch special is a great value. Three rolls, a choice of (miso) soup or salad. The name of the salad escapes me, but anyone familiar with Japanese cuisine would immediately recognize the julienned cabbage, carrots, and radishes, often served with a mildly sweet and sour, yellow-orange dressing. I've tried all the rolls they offer for lunch. I'm always impressed with their eel cucumber roll. No skimping here. A good amount of eel, which somehow still has excellent, recognizable texture despite being paired with slivers of cucumber. Each roll is provided as six pieces, about an inch in diameter and about an inch tall. Overall, I think it's great value for consistently good quality. read more

Stopped in for a late lunch around 3:30. We were greeted immediately by the head chef who happened to be standing behind the bar. I wish we would have gotten there by 2:30 because we missed the lunch specials, oh well. It's a small, open restaurant with an area for hibachi tables and then a small bar and side seating for sushi diners. We sat at a hibachi table and were the only three at the table and were seated and served immediately. I was surprised all of the other tables had diners at them as well at such a random time. Our server was a little off. When she was handing us our drinks and food, she stood on the side of the hibachi grill where the chef would cook and didn't just bring our drinks and soup and salad to us on the other side of the table. It was weird. So instead of standing next to us and placing our items on the table, she stood far from us, handing us our items over the grill and we had to place them ourselves. It was weird. Not sure what was up with that. Anyway! Our chef was AMAZING. He was very funny, made us laugh, he was entertaining, engaging and just a great chef. The food was fantastic! My son got the kids chicken, I got chicken and shrimp and my friend got steak and salmon. All were delicious! The portions were very generous and we all had leftovers. (But this was also from the dinner menu.) The fried rice was light and wonderful, the soup and salad were standard, but the meat!! All of our meat was perfectly prepared. (I know, because I tried everyones.) Each dinner entree comes with a soup, salad, one shrimp, fried rice and whatever entree you choose. It's a little pricey, but you're also paying for the show. Like I said, our chef really delivered! Oh, and they carry the Japanese soda that my son loves and he had two, he was in Heaven. We ordered a standard wine and beer. Best Japanese on the Northshore I'll start by saying I don't frequent this place enough. As a cost conscious kinda of guy I typically go during the lunch hour. One can still get a lot of great food for a good price. If they're not too busy they'll fire up the hibachi for you. Otherwise, you'll have to order off the menu. I could care less because I would rather avoid smelling like what I ate just for a show of flaming volcano onions and flying eggs. The food is consistently good. Perfectly packed rolls full of goodness, noodle dishes, hot soup, and salad with the amazing ginger dressing keep me going back. I usually go with a plate of sushi and chicken hibachi. The udon noodle dish is a four star, too. The service is quick (which I appreciate during the lunch rush) and not too chatty. I can't stand servers that talk so much your food goes cold. You know the type. If you go on the weekend you may want to make a reservation for a hibachi table. They get really busy. Take-out is good, too. My dings- the price and the size of the restaurant. It can feel really cramped when there is a full house. But, then again, a packed house is a sign of greatness. That said, I digress and need to return sooner than later. read more

I was a little reluctant but went there anyway based on my first experience. - For an appetizer, I had their salmon tartar ($10) - chunky salmon with onion, scallion & chef's special sauce. The fish was fresh. I liked the presentation, but thought the appetizer was a little overpriced. So, it's a 3 and 1/2 for me. - For my main course, I ordered their secret roll ($15) - eel, avocado & asparagus inside, outside with different fish on top with chef's special sauce & seaweed powder, eel sauce & spices. My verdict: an overpriced, over-thought, and under-delivered understatement of what was supposed to be a sushi roll! Eight small pieces of sushi with hardly any eel to see and to taste drowned in an overpowering mayo-based sauce and DRY spices! I have attached pictures, because I don't think that words can do this horror roll justice. This roll was a 0 out of 5 for me. - For dessert, we ordered a Fried dragon banana ($4), which tasted just like a banana tempura. If you like bananas, you will like this desert. It's relatively inexpensive and predictable (no good or bad surprises when you bite into it!). I believe we had to ask them to add ice-cream on top, so in the end, the desert cost more than $4. So, it's a 3 out of 5. - They charge $0.50 for extra ginger and wasabi! Seriously?! I don't eat this stuff by a pound, but come on, if I want some extra spices in a restaurant, I believe they should be FREE of charge. They should just go ahead and charge their customers $0.50 for extra soy sauce, salt, pepper, etc.! Would I ever go back to this restaurant? This is a restaurant I've been to many times both dine in and carry out but tonight will be my last time. I took my children there for a what should have been a nice Valentines dinner but it was not. Our server, Sarah, was horrendous. She was rude from the moment we sat down. She did greet us but instead immediately wanted our drink order and stood there with smug smirk on her face that made us all uncomfortable. When she returned, I told her we were ready to order to which she responded "no". She said she would take our appetizer order would place that order, bring that out, and THEN take our dinner order. She brought the appetizer and took our order. We waited for her bring our order while we could see it sitting on the sushi bar. When she finally brought dinner it was cold. She never asked how any of our food was, asked if we needed anything, or offered drink refills. She had ample opportunity as she walked past our table more than 10 times while staring. She did take the chopsticks off the table that we had already touched. A big no-no as you cannot reuse something that has been placed on a guests table. She brought us boxes and the check while we were still eating without asking if we finished or would anything else. I felt as we were being rushed out so boxed our remaining food. Since she had removed the utensils I had to use my hands to box up my food which made a mess. I went to wash my hands and went back to the table to find her hovering. At that point I had enough of her rudeness and her strange behavior so I asked her if she was ok or was having a bad night and told her that she had been rude the entire service. She responded "oh" and walked away. As she walked away, I was headed to the front to pay and she stopped me and told me she was the one that needed to take the credit card. I gave her payment and she walked off without a word. I did not tip but instead left a note to let her and management know that was the worst service I've ever experienced. Here's the thing...I have 20+ years in the restaurant industry. I was Manager and still currently work as a server at a local restaurant part-time. This was completely unacceptable. There was no effort on Sarah's part to make this an enjoyable experience for us. When called out and given the opportunity to recover she failed miserably. A smile, a conversation, or even one check in with the table would have changed the outcome. As a server, I know how difficult and tiring this job can be. That said, I also know people don't go out to be treated as we were tonight. And as far as the tip, tipping is alway optional. It should not be expected. It is earned based on the service you give. Sarah is a poor example of a sever and should maybe consider a different career path. read more

I was quite impressed with Samurai. We tried miso soup, vegetable tempura, spicy tuna roll, and "rock and roll". All was very tasty, and well prepared. Spicy tuna rolls are kind of a stickler for me, and I think Samurai had one of the best that I tried. I like to think that it just isn't a paste that they put into the roll, and here it wasn't just pasty, it had a little texture to it, which I like. Also, the tempura was perfectly cooked and a bit translucent. Miso soup was well prepared and not overly salted, and the rock and roll was crunchy and as described in the menu. The interior could use an upgrade here or there, and also also some cleaning of the curtains that were hanging sort of over the table, but the service was definitely very good and extremely friendly, and the food had lots of flavor.
