This is my go-to spot in Sussex. I order takeout a couple times a month, and the sushi and hibachi are always fresh, tasty, and ready fast.

We had the calamari appetizer tonight, and it was phenomenal. The squid was cooked perfectly and the spicy sauce was fantastic. I love the house salad and miso soup in addition to getting sushi or an entrée. The ginger dressing is delicious and they don't skimp on it. As for the sushi, I think this place is top shelf. They have fantastic food here, and the ambiance reminds me of a Japanese Izakaya. One of my favorite items on the menu is the bento box with teriyaki shrimp or steak. They have perfect beverage compliments as well, from hot green tea to Sapporo beer to fruity Japanese malt beverages. We have additionally had nothing but attentive, quick, and friendly service here. I was so excited to try this place, but so quickly disappointed. We started with the shumai which was hot on the inside and cold in the center. We pushed past it and tried the spring rolls. Without a doubt, these come from a box, which i'm not totally against, but they simply just did not taste good. We were hoping our entres would be a different story, but no. The veggie udon noodles were bland, veggies complety undercooked. The sushi was alright, but it was just that. Didnt seem super fresh and the flavor was mild. Overall, I would not go here again or reccomend if youre wanting good food. I've never felt compelled to make a yelp account until this place. The food was not good at all. Shrimp shumai was cold and seemed microwaved. Spring rolls were prepared from a box. Udon noodles had close to no flavor. Sushi was the only half way decent thing and it still wasn't good. Service was good so no complaints there but if you want good food this isn't it. read more

We started with cold maki, miso and edamame. The soup was fantastic! The cold maki didn't look as fresh, but it has great flavor. We ordered deluxe sashimi and we shared. It was alot of great quality fish presented beautifully. We ordered spicy scallop hand roll and the eel, avocado and cucumber hand roll and loved them! First time at this restaurant was in December 2022. First and foremost for me, was that they had a menu that had a LOT of non-Sushi items. My husband loves sushi and I don't... and that worked out great. He thought the Shushi was great so that is a good thing. I got a teriyaki meal, one of many offered and mine was very good too. The portions were more than either of us could eat at one time, so a to-go box was offered. Atmosphere was nice, the temperature was a bit chilly though. Several families with well behaved children were there, enjoying the various meals and the restaurant certainly had a family friendly menu. Drinks are served in can or bottle. I was surprise my "iced tea" came in a plastic bottle, but that was the only surprise of the evening. We definitely will be returning. read more

With restaurants closed for dining, Ichiban excels at takeout. I stopped for lunch, ordered and was able to sit and wait as they prepared it. I catted with them and even ordered some Ichiban Tshirts. Great addition to Sussex. Sushi was VERY fresh, Shrimp Tempura was Delicious. Our server for lunch today was awesome. She was very nice, funny, attentive, and kept our drinks full. Probably the best Crab Rangoon I've had in a while! (Sorry Main Moon) Very reasonably priced, and the dining area is absolutely gorgeous. Also, they play great music instead of the traditional Japanese restaurant music. One thing I did notice, every single employee in the restaurant was smiling when our group of 5 walked in. I'm a sushi lover. I eat sushi at least once a week. I was in the area and Ichiban was the only option so I decided to try it. I ordered the lunch special with three rolls: Rock n roll, tuna roll, spicy crabmeat roll. I was disappointed with all three. The tempura/crunch that they use for the tempura shrimp in the rock n roll and the crunch they use for the spicy crabmeat roll seemed stale. Both the taste and the texture of the crunch/tempura indicated to me that it was stale. This made the whole roll unenjoyable. The tuna roll had it's own issues. It looked like the sushi chef did not have a proper knife to cut the piece of tuna. Rather than a smooth, nicely cut piece of tuna, the tuna in this roll looked like it had been hacked away at with a fork to get some for the roll. The tuna was in small pieces mixed with larger pieces and shoved into the roll without any care. The tuna was also light pink rather than the deeper red that you normally find at other sushi restaurants. It was chewy and not enjoyable. To top off the experience, the "lunch special" which normally comes with soup and salad, from a Ichiban, only comes with soup (and a small portion of soup at that)! I thought this was pretty stingy as literally every sushi restaurant gives both soup and salad with a lunch special. The ordering experience over the phone was easy (the lady who took my order was nice) and they got the order correct. Besides that, I don't really have many positive things to say. I will be avoiding this place if I am in the area again, and would like to recommend Fujiyama or Kyoto in the Milwaukee area for anyone looking for a good sushi meal! read more

A surprisingly nice spot! I had been to this location when it was China Wok and expected something similar, but Ichiban has really transformed the interior of the space. You definitely feel like you're in a real restaurant instead of in a strip mall next to an abandoned Blockbuster. I flipped through the menu and saw a lot of intriguing options; I was here for lunch, so I tried the teriyaki salmon bento and really enjoyed it! The salmon was well cooked, and I loved that you got spring rolls and California rolls with your meal. I would definitely be interested in coming back to try some udon or sushi. Also, if anyone else is a shameful addict like me - they have Mountain Dew in the soda fountain here, which is distressingly rare. Big bonus! The restaurant was very slow at lunch, and service was a little shaky. Our server was very polite, but forgot to bring out a few things. Not a huge deal, but could be tightened up a bit. My parents live out in Sussex, and it's great to have another option for good food (especially of the non-burger variety) out there for when I visit! read more

Overall Ichiban is a fantastic locally owned sushi restaurant. We recently moved into the area and were on the quest to find a place similar to the sushi places we have become familiar with. We were pleased to find Ichiban within about 5min from home. The service was timely and personable. Our waitress was attentive and patient with us as we were relatively indecisive. She was also very accommodating to our food sensitivities. The fish was fresh and the portions were right sized. One item we ordered was the Sake Don, the amount of fresh salmon received was amazing. My wife and I both walked away very satisfied. The ambience was comfortable for a nice impromptu dinner with my wife. Overall this is a nice gem in our small town. Staff is very friendly. I have given this place a few try's (3) considering sushi is a favorite food of mine and it's so close to where I reside. We eat sushi often and try to go to different places. Unfortunately, this restaurant just never got better and each time somehow got worse, not to mention, the last time I ate here it gave me food poisoning. The fish tastes different, almost old or as it's been sitting in a freezer. It's mediocre food for a high price and you could get a better deal at the grocery store. read more

A few days ago my boyfriend, best friend, and I went to this establishment to enjoy some sushi later in the evening. Seeing ichiban in the trending businesses on yelp I jumped to the occasion to maybe find a place that would trump our favorite sushi spot. The only negative things I heard about this restaurant going into it was service is in need of improvement. I've had terrible service in my days, so I expected it to be tolerable, and it was. The service wasn't great, but it wasn't horrible either. The waitress wasn't very friendly, and was quote short with us even though it wasn't very busy in the restaurant. Onto the food. We all received soup, two miso and one clear, and weren't entirely impressed by the flavor. It wasn't terrible, it just was bland. My boyfriend and friend both got some of their featured and special rolls while I got the spicy roll Combo. The rice used in the rolls was salty and seemed sorta old which wad disappointing. My rolls seemed fresh fish wise, while the other two in my group said theirs tasted either frozen or kinda off. Overall I was kinda disappointed, going in with the expectations of the other reviews I've read here. I feel like I might have gone on a bad day, and will probably try it again, but based on this particular experience I wouldn't recommend. read more
