For more than 10 years we have been staring at several cinderblock retaining walls that we built as part of a house and yard makeover. We wanted a stone panel facade and capstones installed on the walls to finish off the look and beautify the yard. The job was for approximately 700 square feet of face stones and 300 linear feet of cap stones. Additionally, we wanted 2 outdoor cement stairways tiled with porcelain tiles. One at the entrance to the front door and the other to access the upper level of the backyard. We met with Wayne of Samurai Paver Systems at the Alameda County Home Show and he said that he and his crew could handle the job. After several bids Samurai was not the lowest but by far not the highest. Being an engineer I had some idea how much time and money it would cost me to do it and I thought Wayne's price was reasonable. Wayne's preference was for us to purchase the materials and handle the delivery because his policy was not to mark up the cost of the material. He only wanted to charge us for the installation. This was a bit sticky because we had to deal with vendors and availability causing some delay. Additionally for such a large job we weren't sure how much extra quantity was needed because we did not know how much his crew would waste. Fortunately, I was a good estimator and when the materials finally arrived Wayne's crew showed up immediately to start the job. The contract between us was never signed but served as an outline. Wayne and I had a gentlemen's handshake and I asked if he wanted a deposit which he declined. He just asked for money to make weekly payroll for his crew. Under the supervision of his highly talented and skilled foreman Luis, five crew members worked hard for almost a month to complete the job sometimes in 100 degree weather and most always under my watchful exact engineer eyes. They were very thorough and payed attention to detail. I actually think they enjoyed doing the job and were proud of the end result. They were also conscientious about cleaning up at the end of each day. In the end our expectations were met and the end product is beautiful and enhances the look and curb appeal of the house. A few days before the demolition I'd asked Wayne about our existing front porch that has slate on it; including an additional 5 feet onto the walkway that would remain. I mentioned that it hadn't been discussed how the new pavers would look up against it. He abruptly told me not to worry about it because he'd been doing this for a long time. The day before the demolition I asked Wayne if I should go by the Masonry business to get a sample of the product or take pictures and he said no, he knew what we wanted. I hung up the phone feeling uneasy because although we'd picked out the stone; two and a half months had already passed since our original visit and there are variations of the stone. Example: Some are curved on the edges, some have a lightly textured surface, while others are heavily textured. These 2 simple questions wouldn't have taken much time, but without the dialogue; could have bad consequences after the product was laid. We are now a day before the demolition and again I tried to raise a question and I was told to "quit trying to control this" Our daughter was aware of all the details, and out of frustration I reached out to her via text message and said "Wayne is getting on my nerves because now he's telling me not to try to control this" I accidentally sent the text to Wayne and not my daughter. I felt terrible. Within 5 minutes Wayne contacted me and backed out of the deal. I told him I was sorry and explained why I said what I did. He then said in a very sarcastic tone that "he knew what type of personality I had the day he met me" I think it's important for others to know how judgmental this company is and how they don't deliver on the principles of their process that are listed on their website. I'd also encourage to err on the side of caution and ask all of your questions up front even if it's going to be several months out before your project starts because there's a chance this could happen again to someone else. read more

A broken pipe under our driveway prompted us to begin a search for a repair. While walking in our neighborhood we saw a paver installation that really stood out for quality. The homeowner happened to be coming out her front door so we asked her who did the work. She said "Samurai Paver Systems. They're in San Ramon. He's a real artist." We met with Wayne and picked a product. He explained his pricing structure and we agreed to go ahead. The site crew supervisor Luis and his workers were great. They acted as a team, were always on focus and worked hard. We are very happy with the result ! I do have some advice for anyone who will undertake a similar project. Be aware that your underground drainage system is an unknown and could require replacement. (We did not anticipate this extra cost.) Also, if at all possible, keep your garage door, other doors and windows closed as the demo results in everything being coated with a fine concrete dust. (I spent a day vacuuming most of it off of every horizontal surface in our garage.) Put a board over the lip of your garage floor (next to the demo) and it may same damage to your garage floor. (We had some made by flying debris but it was expertly repaired.) Lastly, make sure you don't leave anything of your own on the work site. They leave the site spotless - to their credit - but I ended up loosing some old lawn edging I had stashed behind a hedge for later use and a board that I put under a rubber driveway ramp to keep the car from hitting bottom as I pull in. (Turns out we don't need that board anymore because the car is much happier pulling in on the pavers and doesn't scrape the ground as it did. I will add that the crew was very attentive to detail, installing new wire and fixtures for landscape lighting, straightening out our water meter box, rebuilding a flower box and rejuvenating and testing the entire sprinkler system in the work area. We had a minor detail that needed attention and someone came out the next day and fixed it. They stand by their work. Wayne Hurt and Samurai Paver Systems installed a 340 square ft. paver patio in my back yard after I had a swimming pool removed a year earlier. This job included removing dirt and concrete, landscape grading, and installing a complete back, side, and front yard drainage system so that all water was directed away from the house. They also built a 180 square ft. retaining wall with lights and 480 square ft. of paver walkway around the house connecting the patio to the driveway. Lastly, they replaced my old, collapsing front fence with a new one to tie everything together. I am compelled to write this review because of the outstanding experience that my wife and I received with Samurai Paver Systems. We have lived in our Livermore home for 22+ years and for 20+ years I have HATED our deck. I always had it scheduled as a "one day I'm going to get rid of that deck" project. Life gets in the way and that day came in May 2021. I happen to run across Samurai Pavers Systems on Cochran Landscape Materials website. I called Wayne the owner for a bid, as well as 4 other companies. Wayne came over listen to my "design" of what I was wanting. We discussed layout, drainage and some of thoughts about my design and subtle tweaks. I received bids from 5 companies total and chose Samurai to do the project. They were not the cheapest bid that I received but they certainly were not any where near the highest. Samurai Pavers fell right about what I was thinking was planning on paying, and I felt it was very transparent as he lined item the bid and to show exactly where my money was going. Once we settled the contract, Wayne insisted on my wife and I coming to the materials yard to look at the several variations, colors and manufactures of the flagstone design we wanted. We looked at them dry and wet, and different border options. Truth be told a little bit overwhelming, but glad we did as we went in thinking one coloration and choosing another. Wayne is an great guy very personable, professional and was easily reached with any questions that we had. The crew that came to our home were very professional, polite and efficient. They arrived around 8:00 am every morning and work until 4:30 pm. I happened to be off work most of the days that they were working and I do not recall seeing them not working unless on lunch. The crew cleaned up before leaving and made sure that the side gate was secured before leaving, since I have dogs. My wife suggested adding a playground set to the backyard for our daughter, so she has a safe space to play outside during this covid situation. But looking at our backyard it wasn't ideal to fit anything that we were looking at. Wayne happens to be our neighbor, so I asked if how I could fit a playground in my backyard, and if he could potentially cut some of the extra bricks off so I can put some sod. Wayne and planning (design and material planning): Upon meeting Wayne I could not believe itwhat a  sincere and personable person he is.  His daughter Emma is so cute and well behaved.  I know this is because of his passion to be a great Dad.  His interaction with Emma was so genuine that I knew this guy is 'the real deal!!!!  He drove us around to see his projects from previous clients to give us ideas and help us decide upon what design and types of materials were to be used.  That was quite an education!  We then returned to our house where he proceeded to give us specific ideas to make our house quite a showplace.  Some helpful ideas were the design of the grey borders used in different sizes for different areas.  Also using those borders as 'caps' to accent the retaining wall and mailbox.  It was ingenious the way he 'remodeled' the mailbox to blend in with the whole scheme of the front. Samurai Paver System is a solid and reliable business. Everything is run by the owner himself - Wayne - but he also has a super nice front man - Luis, who is a great pleasure to communicate with as well. In terms of pricing, I'd say they are somewhere in the middle but in terms of quality they are way up there. This makes me believe that it was a great choice for my wife and I to go with Wayne for our complete front yard overhaul. We had an original 1979 cracked all over concrete driveway and an ugly uneven walkway culminating in unsightly steps that our grandma scaled with great difficulty. Now, we have a modern gorgeously paved driveway with a flowing pathway leading to inviting entry steps with railings. Add to that a newly build porch with harmoniously incorporated raised plant beds - all designed by Wayne - and you can't really recognize our modest home anymore. We removed all grass and Luis with his crew brought in new soil, planted two dozen of California native and other drought resistant plants, installed top-of-the-line irrigation drip system and covered the whole area with weed barrier and great looking mulch (from Vision Recycling). They even manage to successfully transplant our beloved lilac bush from one side of the yard to another! The work was done on time although we had to get in line as Wayne and his guys are in high demand in our area. To sum it up, I'd say, if you are thinking about drastically changing the outside look of your home without going overboard financially, give Wayne a try and "you gonna like the way it looks, I guarantee it". read more

We had a small wooden deck in our back yard that I wanted to remove and replace it with a small patio. After talking to a number of contractors we found one that was interested but he never followed up. A couple of days later I called Samurai Paver Systems. Wayne responded immediately; he came over and we discussed the job and he agreed to do it. He explained to me what the job entailed and said he would send me a quote that evening. After receipt and my review of the quote I called Wayne and informed him that his quote was acceptable and asked him when he could start the work. He said they could start the following day. The crew showed up the next day and removed the wood deck and commence preparing the area for the pavers; the work was completed the following day. The crew was proficient, worked hard and did an excellent job. They were thorough, they did not destroy nearby plants and were careful not to damage sprinkler lines that were nearby. Upon completion of the job they cleaned the area thoroughly and removed all excess material and disposed of it. My wife and I contacted Wayne at Samurai Paver Systems to discuss the backyard landscaping for our new construction home. He was immediately easy to talk to and up front regarding his design and business philosophy. We scheduled a time to meet and he provided great ideas while being responsive to our budget and preferences. During the entire project Wayne always made the time to talk/meet with us to choose materials and/or go over the design. In the end we decided to install paver walkways, a modular retaining wall, a crushed granite pathway, and an irrigation system. It rained for nearly the entire two weeks during the construction phase but Wayne and his crew found a way to get things done in spite of the weather. Most impressive is that they were able to do this without causing a muddy mess in the process, which is no small feat. They also left a small 'footprint', i.e. their equipment/materials did not get in the way of our daily activities and use of our home. A few additional notes that further justify my 5-star rating: 1) Wayne was upfront and transparent about pricing. He provided ideas regarding ways to reduce the cost for certain items and/or advice on how to do things ourselves if we wished. 2) Wayne and his foreman Louis are very professional but also very personable. I appreciated that Wayne felt comfortable bringing his daughter over while measuring our yard and talking about the project. She and my 5-year son got along very well and played while Wayne and I talked about the project. 3) My family is extremely happy with how things turned out. The installation of pavers, retaining wall, crushed granite, and irrigation system is top notch with excellent attention to detail. I especially appreciated how they handled the drainage for our lot, which worked very well during this last series of storms. If you want good customer service then you should avoid Samurai Paver Systems at all costs! Don't get me wrong, Wayne has a great personality...if he ever calls you back! I first contacted Wayne when we realized that our previous contractor had no clue what he was doing. After failing two inspections and learning that the previous contractor had ordered the wrong type of pavers, we were desperate for someone who knew what they were doing so that they could complete our driveway. After meeting with numerous paving companies who claimed that they could not use the pavers that we had, we were referred to Wayne. At first, Wayne was a breath of fresh air. He assured us that our pavers could be used and that most of the work for our driveway project had been completed (thus we wouldn't need to shell out more money on materials and labor). Wayne came to our house for two hours and assessed our project. He gave us an amazing initial quote for labor and we were thrilled since it was on the lower end of the quotes we had been given. Wayne told us that he would get a more formal quote and timeline back to us within 24 hours. After our conversation, I felt optimistic that Wayne would be "the guy" that finally would help us complete our project. True to his word, Wayne did email us back within 24 hours. However, Wayne stated in his email that he didn't have time to work on our project "this month." He also did not provide us with a quote. The next day, I called Wayne and he picked up. As soon as I told him who I was (perhaps he didn't recognize my phone number), he claimed he couldn't hear me because his cell reception was bad and he hung up on me. I called him back five minutes later and he didn't pick up, so I left a message. A day later...still no call back or email. I then emailed him and asked him if he was able to work on our project later on in the future. After not hearing from Wayne for days, I had my husband email and call Wayne. My husband emailed Wayne saying that we would love for him to give us referrals to other paving companies if he was too busy for the job. To this day, Wayne has not called or emailed us back. I understand that people are busy, but hanging up on someone and not emailing, calling or texting back is unacceptable and unprofessional - especially when you tell someone that you can help them with their project. If he knew he was too busy, he should have just told us that he couldn't help us at all rather than saying he was too busy "this month." Dealing with Samurai Pavers was a colossal waste of time!!! UPDATE After I posted a negative review of Samurai Pavers on yelp, Wayne responded by saying that he had told us previously that he was busy for two months and that we did not contact him back after expressing our interest in being put on his waitlist. (1) He NEVER told us that his company was booked for two months solid. He never told my husband and he never said it to me when he came here. In fact, I went through our Nest Cam footage the week that we met and he never said anything about being booked for two months. (2) Wayne said that he said in an email that his company was booked for two months - not true! His email stated that he was not available for this month (meaning July since we met at the end of June). (3) Wayne said that he never heard from us again after we told you we would be okay with waiting for his company to complete his other projects. I called Wayne the next day and he purposely hung up on me. I also emailed and texted. My husband called, emailed and texted him as well. We were attempting to see when we could be put on his schedule but he completely ignored us (until I wrote a negative review about his company)! We stopped contacting him after seven or eight attempts because he just couldn't be bothered to call us back. If Wayne had just told me to my face that Samurai Pavers didn't want to help us with our project, I would have been fine with that. We have had other contractors who have told us that they were too busy or that they couldn't guarantee the work when someone else had already started. The reason I did not write terrible reviews about them is that they explicitly told me these things. Instead, Wayne completely ignored us. And only when faced with a negative review on yelp did he respond. In my opinion, you shouldn't waste your time with Samurai Pavers since it's clear from my experience that they don't care about good customer service! read more
