I came here because the wife was mad at me. I don't like shopping while on vacation. Having already gone to the two malls in the SLC area, I didn't want to drive all the way to Draper for another mall. So what does shopping have to do with a ramen place? I have no idea, but, it seems they put ramen joints near the malls in the SLC area. We tried Jinya, over by the Fashion Place Mall first. But, Jinya was the wrong decision because my wife didn't want to go back to the Fashion Place Mall after we had already visited it; and because Jinya is available at home in Los Angeles. The 90 minute wait on a Friday night was also a factor for us to leave. With low expectations, using my trusty Yelp app, I was able to quickly find Samurai Noodle close to the Shops at South Town, a mall that we had not yet visited. We arrived at a little past 7PM. There was no wait at all. We were quickly seated and given menus. Since ramen is in their name, we ordered a couple of their ramens and a karaage. While waiting for the food to arrive, it was interesting to see that they had a noodle machine to make their own noodles. The karaage came out first. It looked kind of funny. It didn't taste bad, but, perhaps there is a reason that this place is not called Samurai Karaage. The ramen was better than I expected, though not as good as some the places I've visited in California. The broth was decent. It made for a good filling meal. Samurai is an okay place for ramen. They were able to serve us quickly so that we could go visit the local mall saving me from an angry wife. 3 1/2 stars, but, for saving me, I will bump it up to 4 stars. read more

Don't be deceived by the humble operations in a strip mall locale. This place serves up amazing gyoza, takoyaki and Hakata Tonkotsu ramen. We've lived in Asia, had the best ramen in Tokyo, and while some chains and shops here in Utah offer fusion or sophisticated fare, this place serves up authentic homestyle goodness. It may lack frills, but the food is delicious and speaks for itself. We are happy to return. Despite the staff shortage, we were well taken care of, our orders were quick and David, our server, was fantastic. He checked on us and all of the tables, numerous times. We had high hopes for Samurai Noodle. We walked in we had a feeling we weren't going to have a good experience. We ordered the Super Ramen, and the Vegetarian Ramen. Super Ramen did not have great flavor. Not much there. The Vegetable Ramen with burnt, so the Ramen tasted like the bottom of a pan. The utensils were all shipped and worn. We got a rice bowl, which was very heavy on the rice, but not much of anything else The cups looked like they had been gnawed on. I've been on a ramen kick lately. I think it's because I've had SO MUCH pho in the past few months, and am craving something a little different, but also have you noticed how cold it's been? Phew! Serious soup weather, and Samurai has chosen the perfect time to open their doors to the hot ramen demanding public. They actually aren't officially open yet, in fact they rather adorably have a note on their blackboard stating, "Still working out the kinks." Fair enough, and thanks for the warning, although to their credit I experienced very few kinks on my first visit last Saturday (note: they are waiting on the liquor license because Utah, and they also didn't have any other drink options beyond soda, though tea is coming within the next week). Our server was most definitely new, and not completely familiar with the menu, but that will come with time, and anyways he didn't hesitate when I requested to make some changes and additions to my bowl of ramen. We started with the edamame, which was your everyday steamed and salted version. I was excited to see togarashi seasoning included with the condiments, and that slightly spicy, salty, citrus-y magic dust elevated the edamame a bit. I ordered the garlic shouyu ramen + seasonal mushrooms (besides being on a ramen kick I've also been on a mushroom kick-nom nom nom) + egg. No matter what you should always order the soft boiled egg! The mushrooms were trumpet, beech, and button, and must have been sautéed, but they were not too oily or soft, with an al dente bite to them. The flavor and crunch of the green onions were a delightful foil to the richness of the rest of the ramen, and I'd request extra next time. Noodles were perfectly cooked. The only thing I didn't love was the pork chashu, but I think that cut of pork just may not be my thing. Every time I've had it it's been pretty fatty, though at least this piece was very tender. My dining partner had the hakata tokotsu ramen. It was delicious, though felt a bit boring compared to my lovely bowl. But the creamy, dreamy broth was divine. Loved the kikurage too. I really wanted to try the takoyaki, but my dining partner was staunchly anti-octopus. I'm definitely ordering that next time, though! The menu seemed a bit small, but there were enough options that you could return several times before you'd start to feel like certain elements of your meals had been repeated. Perhaps they will add to it once they are better established. Prices were $9-$13 for ramen, $5 for most of the appetizers, and 2 for $3 for ice cream mochi. The interior of the restaurant is simple and clean. They have a small windowed room which looks like it will display noodle-making, though there was no action there when I visited. When we left the owner (I believe) asked how our meal was, and if we had any suggestions. He was really kind, and genuinely seemed to want to please his customers. We mentioned coffee might be a nice addition to the menu, and he said he hadn't thought of that as his aim is to stay true to the Japanese heart of the restaurant, and he didn't specifically know of any Japanese sources of coffee (though he would look into it). I think that's impressive, and I totally admire his dedication to authenticity. There is a certain ramen chain which I actually really enjoy, but this is miles ahead of it, not to mention I'd much prefer to support a local spot. I haven't tried many of the other popular ramen restaurants in the area, but this was so delicious I'm not in a huge rush to do so - I'd much rather return here! read more

As with John C, I've been to several of the top Las Vegas Ramen places in the last month. The ramen around town keeps getting better, but none have been serious competition for our bigger neighbor to the South. Until now. Everything except the chashu is a match to anything on Spring Mountain Road. They admit it's been tough working with their purveyor and nailing the chashu. It was slightly over braised. No doubt they will get it figured out. That, and getting the alcohol license, will no doubt come. The wife and I had the Shouyu Tonkotsu Ramen and Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen, each with an added egg, respectively. We also got the Takoyaki to start. They bonito flakes were better than normal quality. The dish was nice with the octopus properly cooked. It was a tasty way to start the meal with a dish I've not had before. The Tonkotsu came with the tin buckwheat noodles, the Shouyu Tonkotsu came with the wavy egg noodles. I can see from tasting them why the broth with chicken gets the egg noodles and the pork gets the buckwheat. Personally, I preferred the buckwheat noodles. I would not have guessed that would be the case. There is very little they need to get in place. It raises the bar on Ramen. It's also nice to be in the South Valley, since that' where I visit more. read more

I am a bit torn about this review as many of the problems that occurred I am almost positive are because a staffing shortage. So if you have time and are prepared to be patient- then I would bump it to a 4 or 5 stars. When we walked in there were conflicting signs about if you were supposed to seat yourself or wait to be seated- we did have to wait while they cleared a table for us. And if we had just sat I am pretty sure they never would have waited on us. Our order was taken fairly quickly, but we ended up with our appetizer (Gyoza- which was amazing) before we even got our drinks. Had to ask a few times for drinks. Finally the kid comes out with a stack of cups just washed and gets us our drinks. We never were offered refills- but got up and refilled up our own drinks as the machine is accessible. The staff was friendly and helpful the few times we saw them- though my husbands food was brought out about 10 minutes before the rest of our table-and then they had an extra one and messed up on if the orders.... But it all tasted delicious. So really good food, pretty bad but very friendly service. This is a smaller restaurant- wouldn't be a good space for a group much bigger then 8 or so. Causal atmosphere. Wow, Samurai Noodle's ramen seems to be a hidden gem! It has an unpretentious and cozy diner ambiance, and friendly and prompt service. My husband and I had the spicy miso ramen and shoyu tonkotsu ramen, and the broths were divinely flavorful and creamy, the pork belly was super tender and rich, and their homemade noodles were perfect. Samurai Noodles has some solid ramen options for ramen lovers in the Valley! I reserve 5* ramen reviews for the truly amazing, but compared to other options around town, Samurai is among the best. Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen Broth: Delicious! Thick, creamy, and slightly oily. Just how I like it! I drank every drop. Noodles [straight]: Fresh, made in-store. I liked them, but they were definitely on the starchy side. Chashu: Quite good. Had a smoky flavor. Fatty and tender. The egg was $1.50 extra, so I didn't get it. Nori was also extra. While I balked a bit about having to pay extra for these things, I realized that the ramen was a great deal, at around $9. So compared to the usual $12-15/bowl, the extras weren't really that much. I'd highly recommend Samurai Noodles for a solid bowl of ramen. I'm looking forward to trying their other bowls! read more

Stopped by to try a carry out lunch order. The location is decent with plenty of parking, the shop itself is quaint and small, and it's really nice that their noodle machine is on display. My order came out quickly (there was only other one group there at the time), and the service was very friendly. I ordered the Super Ramen with an extra egg, and some gyoza. This ran me just under $20 before tip. For a carry out order, I liked that they separated the broth from the solid items into separate bowls, allowing me to put them together when I got home. I also like that I received a disposable ramen spoon with my order as well as a pair of chopsticks. Flavor-wise, I have to say it's nothing to write home about, but was still decent. The dipping sauce that came with the gyoza didn't do much for me. I did have a bit of a time separating the noodles which were rather stuck together, all trying to come up at the same time. I did enjoy the pork slices though. I also didn't get my extra soft-boiled egg that I paid $1.50 for, so that was rather disappointing. I would still be willing to come back and try some of their other ramen broths in the future. read more

Very delicious pork and chicken broth, has so much flavor. They season it just right with the perfect amount of salt leaving you feeling warm and toasty afterward. The ramen is very cleanly executed and noodles always done perfectly. Not sure when they make their noodles but it would be cool to see it being done some day in their specially created room and machines they have. Delicious. I had my ramen delivered, so I can't speak as to the ambience or atmosphere. What I can speak to, however, is the quality of the meal. It's been several years since I've had Hakata ramen, so I can't swear if it's exactly the same, but this bowl was a pretty good approximation of what I ate in Japan! What arrives: a bowl with noodles and the ramen toppings, a container of noodle broth, and a bowl containing a side dish of vegetables (meh, I tossed it, I wasn't interested in the veggies.). I'd ordered extra pork slices and a soft boiled egg, and those arrived in the ramen bowl ready to eat. The noodles are lovely, though if you are getting delivery, after you pour your soup into the bowl, you'll need to let it sit a bit and stir/jiggle the noodles a bit to get them to unstick. Not a huge problem in the grand scheme of things, but definitely not something you'll encounter if you eat at the restaurant. It's just what happens when you transport cooked noodles without soup. The amount of broth seemed like it would be too much for the bowl, but to my surprise, I managed to empty my soup container into the ramen bowl, exactly. Of course, it was dangerously close to overflowing at that point, so don't expect to move your bowl once you pour your soup in. The tonkotsu broth is lovely. I enjoyed it a lot. Meaty and not too salty, it was what I expected from a tonkotsu broth. The noodles are nice too--not overcooked and mushy, but also not too raw. I enjoyed my meal a ton.
