Came here for dinner on a Monday evening. Only a few tables were occupied, so we were seated and served fairly quickly. We overall had a great experience and I highly recommend giving them a try if you're in the area! I had the Sego Bungkus as my entree and we shared the martabak telor as an appetizer. I will note that they brought out the food as it came, not in appetizer to entree order The sego bungkus was a sampler platter of several different entrees and I really enjoyed it! The rendang was a clear stand out to me, always been one of my favorite dishes so not a big surprise. The curry chicken was also very tasty and the sauce that came with the greens had a really nice flavor The martabak telor is a meat and eggs stuffed scallion pancake that packs quite a flavor punch! Truly a mixed experience, and I'm glad we tried it. Loved- the crispy and chewy roti, unique fusion menu (lots of new foods to try!), sweet and extra-crispy wings, having a fully-cooked fried egg and rice crackers on my noodle dish, servers were prompt and kept our waters filled all the time. Didn't love- the space has an unidentifiable unpleasant odor, even when you first walk in. All dishes except for the wings were lacking in flavor- the firecracker chicken wasn't spicy, and the curry sauce with the roti was watery and pretty bland. Our consensus for almost everything was "it's ok, but it needs something". The worst- the mango sticky rice is covered in ice cream! This is so unusual and wasn't noted on the menu or by the server, so I couldn't actually eat the dessert I was looking forward to. I was only in Salt Lake City for a weekend but this place was the best meal I had! Their ayam bakar is chicken in a special sauce with pickled cucumber salad and wow. I had one bite and there was a flavor explosion in my mouth! It was SOOOO good with rice. I would come back just for this chicken. Just sooo delicious. I'm so glad I decided to come and order food here. It's nice you can order online for pickup since I had my dog with me. I could run in to grab my food and I was out right away. EAT HERE! I love to try new places, but Makanmakan has been a years long standby. It's excellent every time I eat here without fail. It's not close to my end of the valley but the commute is absolutely worth it when I'm in need of a meal that will be delicious every time. I've had the chance to explore the menu over the years and I have some favorites, definitely the chicken wings and the sweet and spicy pork ribs are at the top of my list. The ribs are always tender with a sweet crispy glaze, the flavor is perfect and consistent every time. Fast and friendly service, it's very clean, seating for small parties but it looks like some tables can be pushed together. It's not loud and I've never needed to wait for a table. I'm always amazed how quickly the food comes out. The pricing is very reasonable, beers are $5.50 each, just a great product for a great price. Worth trying everything on the menu! read more

YES order the duck ahead and YES it is worth it haha. This place has really gotten better with time. If you haven't had Indonesian food, come here and try it!! You won't find another restaurant like this unless you're on the coasts. The duck with the homemade sambal was too good and I honestly stuffed myself way too full haha. Other dishes we always get are the cah kangkung, gulai kambing, nasi goreng Jawa, and gado-gado (some indonesian classics!). And try some Indonesian style tempeh. Hands down best and most authentic Indonesian food we have had since leaving Asia and last visiting Jakarta over 35 years ago. Great little family-owned place in Sandy. To kick off we went with some Indonesian stand-bys - Martabak and Rendang. Tried some Roti with curry for a change. All were freshly made on the spot and absolutely delicious. Casual atmosphere, sit down dining service. Kitchen is open so you can watch them cook if you like. I've had the wings and would recommend again. This visit I ordered the Martabek Talor as an appetizer. It's like an egg and meat omelette filled inside egg roll paper, but presented and served handheld style like a walkable crepe. Crispy outside and flavor filling. I could see myself walking through a night market in Asia eating this. For entrees, I tried something new for me. Spicy fried chicken. It's literally half a chicken that's cut up quartered, fried and covered in this delicious spicy sauce. I was a bit skeptical since it was a sambal sauce, but it was a good surprise. This can be a messy dish, prepare to eat with your hands and should only be ordered if dining with someone you're comfortable with. The other dish was Crispy Noodle dish. This has been a reliable go to. A huge portion, be ready to share or pack leftovers. A bed of fried crispy egg noodles, covered in a flavorful sweet soy gravy and variety of protein and vegetables. The surprise of the dish is this breaded and fried fish. Crunchy outside, moist inside, and tasty. If you're looking for a change on the typical Asian cuisine, I'd recommend this spot. read more

Service was fantastic, so I don't want to throw much shade-she kept our drinks filled, was friendly and made sure that our menu selections sounded in order with our preferences. However, the food was pretty bland and unexciting. We tried two different dishes between the two of us and I preferred the glass noodles to the rice, but it was still not overly impressive. We were a party of 4. Three of us really liked the restaurant and would come back. The 4th member is very picky and has a limited palate. For starters, we had roti canai (For me, since I am vegetarian, though I shared) and the lumpia. The roti was hot and super tasty and the curry sauce that came with it was a perfect pairing. The lumpia (egg rolls) I didn't taste, but the other folks at the table liked them and one person said the next time we come, she will order a bunch of servings of lumpia and just eat that for dinner! For dinner, my mom had the nasi goreng Jawa which she said was good, but didn't have a lot of flavor. She tasted my spicy eggplant and liked that much better. (I loved it and the spice level was super nice.). I was disappointed to hear the nasi goreng was boring because prior to being vegetarian I had eaten this at another restaurant and it was awesome. I was the one to recommend it to her, so I felt bad. However, based on my dish my mom said she would want to come back and try something else. My aunt (the one who is picky) had the Singapore noodles. She thought they were ok, but she just picked at the dish and did not take home any leftovers. (But don't take her word for it!) My cousin had the shrimp in the sweet buttery sauce and she couldn't stop raving about it. My mom also tasted her dish and really liked it too. As a vegetarian, I was disappointed that some of the dishes in the vegetable section were cooked with shrimp paste. Having said that, the waitress said I could order anything on the menu (almost) and substitute tofu. So this made me happier! They also had a little store with a bunch of different sambal sauces. I was super excited because I cook with sambal oelek all the time. The manager even suggested one I could buy based on the fact that I liked the oelek version. It was good, though the curry flavor was a little stronger than I remembered in Indonesia. We then ordered the Family Makan, which comes with seasoned steam rice, krupuk goreng (fried shrimp chips), mie goreng (fried noodles), and your choice of two entrees. We went with the Ayam Bakar Bumbu Rujak (spicy grilled chicken) and the Cah Kangkung, a stir-fried vegetable dish that was so tasty, even my teen boys loved it. That was our favorite dish, highly recommended. We also ordered the Nasi Goreng Jawa (fried rice), which turned out to be our other favorite dish thanks to its aromatic "wok-breathed" flavor. We ordered rendang and mie babi bali. The rendang is the braised beef stew that comes w a scoop of rice, very flavorful and has a deep beef stew flavor. The food is fairly tasty and has pretty good portions. We ordered the Redang and Mie Babi Bali as our entrees. The Redang had good flavor and was paired nicely with the rice. The Mie was also good, but I just usually don't gravitate toward noodle dishes like this, so although it tasted fine, it wasn't spectacular either. My wife and I always try to have a bite to eat before heading to Costco so we don't leave there with a $400 bill...and instead something more like $200...so we swung by MakanMakan last Thursday night for dinner. As per my previous write-up three years ago, we are aficionados of their Lumpia (Filipino/Indonesian egg rolls), which are de-lish by the way...but this evening we ate a full dinner (we normally do take-out from Makan Makan several times a year.) My wife ordered the special grilled pork skewers (Pork Sate/Sate Babi) with white rice and some veggies...and I had my default Singapore Noodles (stir-fried curry rice noodle with eggs, vegetables, pork charsiu, shrimp, and chicken) which was delicious as always. And yes, we started with one order of the Lumpia (three to an order). I also enjoyed a de rigueur Tsing Tao beer, and my wife a Fanta orange soda. Great service by our waitress, Grace M., as well. We got out of there with a tab for $51.25 (not including a tip...) An excellent and expansive menu, coupled with great food and healthy portion size...all adds up to Five Stars. Stopped by here for a nice lunch on a Monday afternoon and it had a decent amount of people there for a lunch break. Service was prompt and friendly as well. We ordered the sweet spicy pork ribs and crispy noodles with a thick sauce. The ribs had a good flavor but were pretty salty so they definitely need to be accompanied with lots of rice. Overall they were a 3/5. The crispy noodles were pretty tasty with a great textural differentiation between the thick sauce, toppings, and noodles. I thought there was a lot more sauce to noodle ratio though so that got a little overly salty when the noodles were running low on the plate. I thought they used high quality ingredients and had lovely developed flavors. But I think the dishes were a little over salted so they might just need to tone that down a bit. Overall a good experience and would like to try their other dishes for more comparison. read more

We got two apps and all ordered entrees and the food was quick to come out as well. I can't remember if I've ever had Indonesian food before but it was amazing. We all got different things so we were able to try a little bit of everything. I really liked the pickled veggies that came on the side of most of our meals. A bit salty and bland. Only one flavor would stand out from each dish. The spicy basil chicken was just salty, unless you got a bit of the pepper in their and then it was just spicy. The Laksa had a very meaty broth but no true spices came forward. Amazing food! I was so happy with the food here. We got roti canai, mie tek tek, and Thai tea, and the food was so flavorful, the portions were generous, and everything was cooked just right. The roti canai came with amazing flaky + soft roti, and the dipping sauce hit the spot. The noodles were also amazing, and I loved the contrasting texture of the crunchy topping with the perfectly cooked noodles. And the fried egg was the star--I haven't had an egg fried this way before, and it hit the spot! I need to learn how to make a fried egg that is similar to a gently poached egg on the inside.... The menu has variety of famous Indonesian food that I craved but I had to restrain myself and ordered a few as the portion was pretty generous. - Gado gado: a classic Indonesian salad with fresh vegetables (cucumber, tomato, green bean, bean sprouts, potatoes) and kerupuk / chips. The portion was very generous (even my husband couldn't finish it). All the ingredients tasted fresh and the peanut sauce was delicious. - Sate ayam: flavorful & tender chicken. The peanut sauce was just okay as it wasn't as thick as I wish. But the chicken itself was delicious. - Mie tek tek: good chewy noodle & flavorful. This casual restaurant may be one of the very few in/around Utah that serve a wide menu of Indonesian food! It also features a few favorites from Malaysia/Singapore and in a small 'grocery' section, sells various Indonesian spices, beverages, snacks, etc. The restaurant's dishes were flavorful and served quickly in an efficient, but not necessarily welcoming, manner. Makan Makan (it translates to "eat eat" in Malay). My grandfather always told me to eat eat because back in his day you didn't know when food was going to be available next. If you ever have the opportunity to visit Jakarta, Singapore, or Hong Kong they have these Hawker food centers similar to our food trucks and farmer markets. This place brings recipes from these street fares. This is my first time here, plenty of parking and dinning tables. The menu is not complicated and you won't find typical Asian dishes here and the menu keeps it's authentic names on what the dish is suppose to be. Laksa: This is a traditional Peranakan Cuisine dish (Chinese & Malay influences). There are variations of wheat or rice noodle and usually served with shrimp. The coconut curry soup base is how this dish should be judged. Makan gets 4.5 stars from me the broth is creamy and not sweet like most Thai curries. Pro tip: if you ever travel through Singapore Changi Airport and have access to Priority Pass lounge go to SATS Premier Lounge Terminal 2 their signature dish is the infamous Laksa. I've also been to The Original Katong Laksa in Singapore but I think the airport lounge was better. Back to the review. Martabak: Mutabbaq in Arabic means "folded" is traditional Muslim dish that I've had in Singapore. It's a omelette pancake with veggies, onions, and minced meats. The Makan version says it has halal beef. I like the thin crust here it comes with plenty of onion and curry base flavor. Rendang Beef: This dish is similar to a beef stew. Beef is cubed with a flavorful sauce. It was bit too salty for me but still pairs well with white rice. Overall I'm impressed that Makan can bring a punch to the food scene in Sandy UT. The Southeast Asia cuisine is a complex melting pot of Thai, Indian, Malay, Singapore, Persian, and Arabic influences. I can't wait to try more dishes on the menu. To save yourself a 15 hour flight to Asia, come to Makan instead. Suggestion to management: offer a Singaporean "chicken rice" it's trending and a matter of time it will be a thing in the US food scene. read more

When visiting Utah for work, I always try to stop by MakanMakan. This is the only Malaysian/Indonesian restaurant in SLC. Every dish we've tried is flavorful. I hate to give this restaurant a three star. Their food is amazing. But the service is what is making me drop MAKANMAKAN to 3 stars. We arrived at 1:40, plenty of time for their 3pm closing. We asked our server which menu items were the most authentically prepared as we had visited Indonesia and loved their foods. From this list we choose Martabak Telor and Rendang (medium spicy). Both dishes were excellent! Only one change would we make and that would be to get the Rendang at a level five, not a three. It wasn't spicy enough for our pallets. The reason I dropped the review to three stars is because of our attitude change. As we began our meal we remarked: "Each dish is so tasty. We need to return so we can try each dish on the menu." But I'm not so sure we will return. The Rendang portion was large enough for a good dinner meal. Except they gave us about half of the amount of rice we needed. Then we pretty much got ignored. They did fill my water once, but when I tried to get their attention to ask for more rice they I ignored my calls and avoided eye contact. After they brought our bill I asked for more rice, they could see there was a lot of food left but no rice, they brought the rice in a to go box with a bill for the rice so we had to pay for the additional rice. Well they waited so long to come by that we just packed up the Rendang and rice and left. There were only four tables of diners in the restaurant and two servers. They did not have an excuse to ignore us. Salt Lake City has a lot of Thai and other dining opportunities. Next time we are in Salt Lake City we will explore another Thai restaurant and forget that we even liked MAKANMAKAN. Dining is as much the service as the food imo. read more
