Really enjoyed Makanmakan. The Indonesian food was very good and full of flavor. We tried dishes like the rendang, nasi goreng, and chicken satay, and everything was delicious. I am starting to appreciate the food in this area more...it's not as bad as everyone says.
Parking is so easy as they have their own lot. We were able to pull in and find parking immediately out front. Walking in, the restaurant has seating for about 30 people. Service is fast that it doesn't seem to be a problem as we were immediately seated at a table in the back. We went on a weekday for lunch and there were people coming in and out, but didn't seem to cause a wait time for anyone. Food is tasty but portions for the appetizers seemed a little small in quantity (quality was great tho). We would definitely go back again to try more things.
Where else can you get this type of cuisine in Utah??? And it's sooo good! Loved the Curry Fish--a tad spicy for those who don't handle spice well but I Loved it. They have a set group menu that we ordered off of which gave you an appetizer, rice, noodles and two entrees. A great way to sample everything they offer. The Mango sticky rice was the best in Utah I've had and included ice cream.
Came here for dinner on a Monday evening. Only a few tables were occupied, so we were seated and served fairly quickly. We overall had a great experience and I highly recommend giving them a try if you're in the area! I had the Sego Bungkus as my entree and we shared the martabak telor as an appetizer. I will note that they brought out the food as it came, not in appetizer to entree order The sego bungkus was a sampler platter of several different entrees and I really enjoyed it! The rendang was a clear stand out to me, always been one of my favorite dishes so not a big surprise. The curry chicken was also very tasty and the sauce that came with the greens had a really nice flavor The martabak telor is a meat and eggs stuffed scallion pancake that packs quite a flavor punch! I had a hard time identifying the seasonings they used but it felt more south Asian than anything else we tried Overall i thought this was a great spot and hope I have the chance to come back in the future!
Truly a mixed experience, and I'm glad we tried it. Loved- the crispy and chewy roti, unique fusion menu (lots of new foods to try!), sweet and extra-crispy wings, having a fully-cooked fried egg and rice crackers on my noodle dish, servers were prompt and kept our waters filled all the time. Didn't love- the space has an unidentifiable unpleasant odor, even when you first walk in. All dishes except for the wings were lacking in flavor- the firecracker chicken wasn't spicy, and the curry sauce with the roti was watery and pretty bland. Our consensus for almost everything was "it's ok, but it needs something". The worst- the mango sticky rice is covered in ice cream! This is so unusual and wasn't noted on the menu or by the server, so I couldn't actually eat the dessert I was looking forward to. Please make a note of this on the menu so that people know what to expect!
I was only in Salt Lake City for a weekend but this place was the best meal I had! Their ayam bakar is chicken in a special sauce with pickled cucumber salad and wow. I had one bite and there was a flavor explosion in my mouth! It was SOOOO good with rice. I would come back just for this chicken. Just sooo delicious. I'm so glad I decided to come and order food here. It's nice you can order online for pickup since I had my dog with me. I could run in to grab my food and I was out right away. I also had the roti and that was so good as well. Nice and crunchy and went well with the sauce it came with. HIGHLY recommend getting food here!
Service was great! There was just one gal doing the whole wait room but she was super friendly and prompt. The star meal was the shrimp in sweet butter sauce. Shrimp was cooked perfectly. The sauce on the wings was also very good. The pork ribs could probably be skipped - sauce was nothing special. Was quiet around lunch time which was nice to be able to talk.
EAT HERE! I love to try new places, but Makanmakan has been a years long standby. It's excellent every time I eat here without fail. It's not close to my end of the valley but the commute is absolutely worth it when I'm in need of a meal that will be delicious every time. I've had the chance to explore the menu over the years and I have some favorites, definitely the chicken wings and the sweet and spicy pork ribs are at the top of my list. The ribs are always tender with a sweet crispy glaze, the flavor is perfect and consistent every time. Fast and friendly service, it's very clean, seating for small parties but it looks like some tables can be pushed together. It's not loud and I've never needed to wait for a table. I'm always amazed how quickly the food comes out. The pricing is very reasonable, beers are $5.50 each, just a great product for a great price. Worth trying everything on the menu!
YES order the duck ahead and YES it is worth it haha. This place has really gotten better with time. If you haven't had Indonesian food, come here and try it!! You won't find another restaurant like this unless you're on the coasts. The duck with the homemade sambal was too good and I honestly stuffed myself way too full haha. Other dishes we always get are the cah kangkung, gulai kambing, nasi goreng Jawa, and gado-gado (some indonesian classics!). And try some Indonesian style tempeh. As someone who's been to Indonesia many times, I can say this is the closest you'll get to the real flavors and dishes! Service is always fantastic and fairly quick. And inside is well-lit with natural light and has a lot of seating! They also sell some Indonesian shelf-stable foods inside, so take a look at those too!
I've been here several times and this place doesn't disappoint. Hailed as an Asian street food restaurant, Makanmakan highlights an Indonesian centric menu. Casual atmosphere, sit down dining service. Kitchen is open so you can watch them cook if you like. I've had the wings and would recommend again. This visit I ordered the Martabek Talor as an appetizer. It's like an egg and meat omelette filled inside egg roll paper, but presented and served handheld style like a walkable crepe. Crispy outside and flavor filling. I could see myself walking through a night market in Asia eating this. For entrees, I tried something new for me. Spicy fried chicken. It's literally half a chicken that's cut up quartered, fried and covered in this delicious spicy sauce. I was a bit skeptical since it was a sambal sauce, but it was a good surprise. This can be a messy dish, prepare to eat with your hands and should only be ordered if dining with someone you're comfortable with. The other dish was Crispy Noodle dish. This has been a reliable go to. A huge portion, be ready to share or pack leftovers. A bed of fried crispy egg noodles, covered in a flavorful sweet soy gravy and variety of protein and vegetables. The surprise of the dish is this breaded and fried fish. Crunchy outside, moist inside, and tasty. If you're looking for a change on the typical Asian cuisine, I'd recommend this spot.
Loved everything about this place! One of those I want to keep eating but literally can't We got the lumpia appetizer did not disappoint super super crispy I got the combination plate. It had a bite of everything, but I think the winner was the chicken curry. And the noodles were so good and it comes with rice! Can't believe this place has been here for this long and I've never tried it. Will be back
This was a solid find! Legit Indonesian food and they have a mini mart to buy authentic Indonesian snacks, chilies, etc. Highly recommend getting the ayam penyet and red curry fish! The chicken was a massive portion, they gave us a half chicken and the sauce was spicy and extremely flavorful! Red curry fish was fried but still crispy in the delicious curry sauce.
When visiting Utah for work, I always try to stop by MakanMakan. This is the only Malaysian/Indonesian restaurant in SLC. Every dish we've tried is flavorful. The portions are large and do not disappoint. My favorite so far is the calamari and pork belly noodles. There are a variety of dishes to choose from. Definitely worth trying! read more
I hate to give this restaurant a three star. Their food is amazing. But the service is what is making me drop MAKANMAKAN to 3 stars. We arrived at 1:40, plenty of time for their 3pm closing. We asked our server which menu items were the most authentically prepared as we had visited Indonesia and loved their foods. From this list we choose Martabak Telor and Rendang (medium spicy). Both dishes were excellent! Only one change would we make and that would be to get the Rendang at a level five, not a three. It wasn't spicy enough for our pallets. The reason I dropped the review to three stars is because of our attitude change. As we began our meal we remarked: "Each dish is so tasty. We need to return so we can try each dish on the menu." But I'm not so sure we will return. The Rendang portion was large enough for a good dinner meal. Except they gave us about half of the amount of rice we needed. Then we pretty much got ignored. They did fill my water once, but when I tried to get their attention to ask for more rice they I ignored my calls and avoided eye contact. After they brought our bill I asked for more rice, they could see there was a lot of food left but no rice, they brought the rice in a to go box with a bill for the rice so we had to pay for the additional rice. Well they waited so long to come by that we just packed up the Rendang and rice and left. There were only four tables of diners in the restaurant and two servers. They did not have an excuse to ignore us. Salt Lake City has a lot of Thai and other dining opportunities. Next time we are in Salt Lake City we will explore another Thai restaurant and forget that we even liked MAKANMAKAN. Dining is as much the service as the food imo. read more

I can tell that this place has a ton of good options. I wet alone though and so I only had one item, the beef rendang. It tasted like an American pot roast with Asian spices and flavors. It was good but did not blow my socks off. I got my food quick! I can see myself moving this to a 5 star as I get to try more items on the menu. read more

First time here. Ordered a dish with 3 types of curry and wings. Food I ordered was delicious; loved the trio of curries. All different and all were bursting with flavors that were refreshing. I also loved the deep fried egg...first time having a deep fried egg and I love it. I would order this dish again. Wings were also tasty. Found this place and decided to give it a try. We love Malaysian food and are a bit spoiled. Restaurant is casual but nicely decorated inside. Server was real friendly and helpful working through the menu. I was surprised at how affordable this place is! We ordered the Roti Cani appetizer and main dishes of the Laksa and Prawn Chili Jam. Total cost was only $36!!! The food was very good and flavorful. It wasn't as good as Phat Eatery in Katy, Texas (our favorite spot) but was half the price and still really good. We've been traveling for more than a week and I've been eating out a lot during this time, even spent $300 at a nice steakhouse. However, this food was the highlight of our trip. We love authentic ethnic foods and seek out these kinds of places. The flavors and care put into this food are wonderful. This is a must try if you are in the area. read more

A vast array of explosive flavors and textures at this Indonesian-Balinese restaurant located in Sandy. Family-owned and -operated by an Indonesian couple , it's nicely decorated café with a special section of spices and take-home food items. Our server was the bubbly and helpful Katie. It is absolutely unforgivable for one to dine here and not experience the taste bud miracle that is the Karaage-style LOLLIPOP CHICKEN WINGS as a starter. Sweet, tangy, and a tiny bit spicy, they were done to perfection. TIP: I recommend rolling them around in the rice noodles they come with prior to eating so as to have contrasting crunchiness with the meat. Move over, pho -- the WANTON MIE is now in the driver seat for noodle soups! It comes with pork dumplings, sweet pork belly and vegetables and noodles swimming in a slightly spicy curry coconut broth. Lordie, it's the real deal. I was loathe to share it with my dining partners because it's all mine, my precious--mine! (Golem voice) The THAI TEA here was served with whipped cream and in a large curved glass. It was a unique look but unfortunately, it was rather weak on flavor. Staff: Add a little more syrup at the expense of whipped cream and it would be a lot better. I deducted one star for this. I tried the BEEF RENDANG entree as well. If you like roast beef, this one's up your alley. The meat was falling off the fork it was so soft and the sauce had the right consistency to avoid drowning or choking out the flavor. Delightful! All three of us went to town on it. Remember that you can ask for spiciness (or lack thereof) upon request, but that by default dishes are served slightly spicy. Not enough to have to wear a seat belt on the toilet at midnight but just enough to make you feel you've got pop rock lip gloss on after the meal. I didn't feel the need to change any level and would recommend you try the default level first before changing it. read more
This is one of my husband's favorite spots and it does not disappoint. Smaller restaurant and might be family run, staff are super friendly and helpful, and dishes are all wonderfully crafted with perfect portion sizes! We had one of the thin breads which reminded me of a Chinese pull apart crispy pancake, it was so good but I didn't like the curry flavor that much. Hubs had a pork belly noodle dish and the pickled cucumbers in it were perfectly done. I had the green beans with black bean sauce and some added chicken and it was good but just a tad too salty for me. read more

Wanted to try something new in the area and SO GLAD we tried this restaurant! The interior was clean and seating was immediate. I loved that they had a section of the restaurant with Indonesian snacks and drinks! It was cool seeing global treats and trying new ones! I shared my noodle dish and my friend's fried rice dish, and we were so happy with our food. It was an amazing portion size for the price, and so delicious! I want to come back and try the Thai tea and about everything else on the menu. The service was quick and polite. The food really speaks for itself here. read more

I can't believe this place has been here and I never knew about it until now. I have never seen an Indonesian restaurant in Utah, and being half Indonesian my daughter and I really appreciated it. There are so many choices on the menu, love that. We went with the red curry with fish and the Mie Tek Tek( Indonesian noodles), and a side order of Shrimp crackers. The red curry was fresh and you can taste that it was homemade curry, it was to die for. The noddles were good, but once you put the cucumber relish, and homemade sambal, that leveled them up to amazing!!!! Shrimp crackers were great, they have a great selection of Asian beers/wine/sake. We can't wait to come back and bring the whole family!!! You gotta check this place out. There is also a mini mart of food & snacks there which is awesome! read more

I was really excited to try out this restaurant based on the Yelp reviews, but was sadly disappointed. Where shall I begin?.... Ok so the lollipop chicken wings were delicious! Quite honestly some of the best I've had! The wings were sweet and tangy, and bursted with flavors. I had high hopes that the other dishes would be equally phenomenal, but quickly came to the realization that only the wings were great. The laksa noodles were very average in flavor. It was good, but nothing worth raving about. The quantity of noodles were small for the price. The bowl consisted mainly of chicken. The shrimp were teeny tiny, I think there a total of 3 baby shrimp. I would pass on this dish if I were to come here again. The Nasi Goreng Jawa was just awful! The rice itself was mushy and wasn't cooked right--too much water! Not only was the texture of the rice too soft, it also really lacked flavor and the fried egg on top was over fried. I did not enjoy this dish at all. Poor execution in every aspect! The lollipop chicken wings really saved the day. I felt it was fair to give this restaurant 3 stars overall. Collectively, the dining experience was average, the service was average. Aside from the lollipop chicken, another thing I appreciated was that each table had fresh flowers. It was a nice touch. Love this hidden gem in a strip mall in Sandy! Southeast Asian fusion street food is a bold venture in Utah but Makanmakan does a fantastic job. The reviews have been so good so stopped in for a quick dinner and they seated us right away. Nice clean restaurant, lots of indoor seating, also a patio in nice weather (but you're looking at a parking lot). Pleasantly surprised at their beer menu which features a number of Asian beers you don't typically see at Utah restaurants. Also has a small area with specialty grocery items for purchase - saves you a trip to the Asian market. Ordered the Roti Canai (Flat bread with curry sauce) and Honey Glazed Lollipop Wings to start. Both fantastic - the wings were crunchy underneath the killer sauce (packed some heat). The roti and curry were simple and perfect (also a good size serving of curry - nothing worse than running out). Got the Kwetiau Goreng (Stir fry big flat rice noodle with egg, vegetable, and meat), and Goat Curry with rice for entrees. Good portion and very filling because of the richness of both. Only disappointment was a few bones or gristly pieces in my Kwetiau Goreng noodle dish. Prompt and friendly service; the staff had a good pace balancing takeout prep and in-restaurant customers without feeling hurried. They seem very popular for takeout. We were seated and given menus and had a server to help us, though our dishes were served in disposable paper trays or plastic containers (not an issue for us - added to the "street food" vibes). This place was amazing. The service was extremely quick and food was great. Our food came out before we even finished ordering and it was fresh and made to order. This food was DELISH!!! We got the Roti Canal (flat bread with curry), Makanmakan wings, and the Rendang (braised beef with curry) and everything was to die for! Our food came out super fast, was piping hot, and the portions were great! The flavors were so fun and unique and we will definitely come back again! We had an amazing lunch here yesterday! Both of us have spent a lot of time in Indonesia and we were craving some tasty food from Bali so we decided to pop into this place for lunch. We ordered the chicken sauté skewers, the fried calamari entrée and the Nasi Goering. The flavors were delightful and instantly took us back to our favorite Indonesian meals. Only observation is that the calamari was a bit salty but still really great. Note that this is a family run business the mother who is the hostess and waitress and her son are really wonderful people. Please give this place a try I think you'll really enjoy it as much as we did. read more

Went here for a group lunch and 4/5 people got the SAME order (me included) haha. I ordered the Nasi Goreng Jawa, which is basically chicken fried rice. Nothing too crazy, but still very delicious. The portion size was also so large that I could've shared it among the group. Paired that with a thai ice tea and roti canai. Thai ice tea was HUGE and not overly sweet! Roti canai was an oiled flatbread that came with a curry sauce - also a good pairing! Everything was yummy, and I would definitely come back here next time I'm in Utah. Very pleased with my experience here. Food came out in 15 minutes, spot has plenty of seating. Come here for some good Malaysian food!! read more

Been here so many times every time when I'm craving for their sweet buttery shrimp. Best shrimp dish in Utah, the flavor is so addicting. My second fav dish is the half grilled chicken with spicy sauce. Always my to go Asian food place around the Draper area. read more
Ok wow - this was a really fun adventure and definitely a place I'm excited to come back to try. PSA GET THE ROTI - this was my first time having roti, and boy was it delicious. The sauce which is the base sauce for all their curries is amazing. Honestly probably my favorite bite of the evening. We also got the chicken wings which were super yummy. Two noodle dishes and braised beef. The noodle dishes were good and I liked the Babi Bali the most. read more

This place was very tasty. I would highly recommend going. The flavors were very unique, while seeming to be familiar dishes. We got the Nasi Goreng Jawa (a fried rice with a very distinct umami flavor), Wanton Mie (a kind of wonton/ramen soup), and the Firecracker Basil Chicken (a deep spice that isn't over powering and has a richness to it). They were all excellent, and I could have easily chosen several other dishes to try. The waitress was super helpful, providing us with her favorites. The owner even came over and described most popular dishes, what flavors to expect, and answered our novice questions about the regional cuisine. Will definitely be returning. read more

Amazing food. Very flavorful. Everything we eat was delicious. Husband ordered the sample plate, I ordered the spicy egg plant, and daughter had a chicken noodles. We also ordered the chicken skewers with peanut salsa that was to die for. Service is great too. read more
We love MAKANMAKAN! It is our go to spot for Asian food in South Valley. They have great authentic Singaporean and Thai dishes. Everything is delicious here, but our favorite dishes are usually the roti, any of the half chicken dishes and stir fried water spinach. We also like the wonton noodle soup and Thai tea. You can tell that they put a lot of thought and flavor into the food that they serve. read more
