Outstanding Indonesian. With 6 guys we ordered 7 dishes all family style and no one walked away disappointed. We tried a fish dish, another with beef, others with chicken, nasi goreng, noodles, rice, chicken satay appetizers, lumpia (spring rolls), and everyone ate like kings. Every single dish was more flavorful than the next. If you've been to Amsterdam and had a Rijstafel in an Indonesian spot, you might like your meal in Sandy even better. Sadly I haven't a been to Jakarta so I can't compare Makanmakan to homeland cuisine, but that's irrelevant here because it's a damn fine meal to be had in Sandy, Utah. The food was just okay. Nothing too spectacular but it wasn't bad. The service was pretty good and the food came out quickly. I got the Laksa and the portion size was larger than I thought. I actually needed a take out box after eating half of it while there. However, later at night, I couldn't stomach the rest of the curry and noodles and ended up throwing it away. The coconut curry and the rice noodle made it very filling. The laksa came with complementary chili oil but I didn't use it at all so my laksa wasn't the tiniest bit spicy. So if you want the spice, you gotta add it in yourself. I'm not sure if the egg was supposed to be soft boiled or not, but if so, it looked/tasted a bit overcooked. It would've tasted better if it were more runny. It's not really shown in the picture but there was a LOT of cilantro. I personally would've preferred less of it, however, if you LOVE cilantro, I think you would like this dish. Note that the proportion of the basil to the cilantro was astounding. I counted 1 basil leaf compared to all that cilantro. But I guess we don't necessarily eat the basil itself... or do we? There's also one gigantic piece of lettuce; you can eat it but I think it's more for decoration purposes. read more

Wow! What a find! Indonesian/Malaysian street food. The Roti was so simple but so good. Fresh warm flatbread with curry for dipping. Might have been my favorite dish there. The red curry fish was delicious too. Crispy cod in delicious red curry. The sate ayam is basically chicken satay but done really well. Mie tek tek was delicious. Indonesian stir fry noodle dish. The water spinach came out on a sizzling hot dish. Great dish if you're looking for some veggies. Lillipop wings were basically Korean fried chicken with gochujang sauce. Good, but probably my least favorite dish. We even tried 3 desserts. The mango sticky rice was the favorite. Comes with ice cream. We tried both shaved ice. One is classic, kind of like Filipino halo halo. The other green one was interesting. Tasted almost like butterscotch with green jellies and shaved ice. Plenty of parking. Service was great. This place is nothing fancy, but it does have a clean exterior interior. Inside there is a few shelves of items that you can buy and take home with you largely snacks. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised to try something new for Valentines. The service was friendly and fast, and the food was very delicious. MakanMakan bills itself as serving, "Asian StrEat Food Fare", and its logo is a food cart, but it's an Indonesian restaurant at heart. I can't recall ever before eating at an Indonesian restaurant and, now, I regret missing out on a lot of tasty meals. My expectations weren't particularly high for the restaurant. I chose it because I saw curry goat and shave ice on the menu. Those expectations didn't change when I saw it. It's a newer restaurant in a standalone building with a jeweler and a pancake house, across from a coffeehouse drive-through window. Inside, the decor is new and modern, with reclaimed wood and corrugated, galvanized sheet metal on the walls, and red-painted exposed ductwork along the ceiling. They appear to do a lot of take-out business and there was a small lunch crowd at the nicely spaced tables. Service was quick and efficient. The food is made to order, but mine didn't take long. I ordered Curry Goat / Gulai Kambing, which is halal goat cubes cooked in yellow curry sauce. It's described as "bone-in", but mine was boneless, except for one tiny shard. I also ordered Stir Fry Water Spinach / Cah Kangkung, which is stir fried water spinach in garlic sauce. It arrived sizzling and fragrant on an extremely hot plate. Finally, I ordered Spicy Eggplant / Terong Balado, which is eggplant stir fried in Indonesian chili sambal sauce. It was sweet and salty, and had plenty of fresh ginger in it. Everything that I ordered was delicious. I had enough food for three people and ended up taking a lot of it home, because I wanted to save room for dessert. The Shave Ice / Es Campur is described as Indonesian shave ice with jelly, fruits, syrup and condensed milk, but the ice was crushed, not shaved. It's analogous to Filipino halo halo and Vietnamese tricolor. The ice quickly turned pinkish red from something other than condensed milk. The only topping that I recognized was little lychees. The other toppings were strands of a golden yellow fruit that looks like, but isn't, jackfruit, green wormlike strands that are soft and mushy like spätzle, but made of rice flour, and little cubes of a brown jelly that are savory, not sweet (pandan, perhaps?). The sweetest ingredient in the dessert was the lychees. I really liked everything about my meal, despite the dissonance of the contemporary American, rustic modern decor. There's a lot more on the menu for me to try and I'm already looking forward to returning for another meal. read more

Super unique flavors, and if you're in for something new and different you got to get on this. The table service understand that you might not be familiar with all the different flavors and dishes and they are so willing to help you and walk you through your options. Price was super reasonable between the four of us all sharing family style with a bunch of different dishes, it was perfect for a Tuesday night dinner. I've been here twice-- once for dine-in and once for takeout. I tried as many items from the menu as possible and I'd say that everything I've tried has been solid. The Roti Canai is delicious, and so are all the noodle dishes. The beef rendang is really flavorful and goes so well with rice. I think that the one thing that can be better is the portion sizes. The prices are very reasonable, but I wish that each dish came with more considering portion sizes that typical restaurants give at that price point. While the food is very unique and also not something I could easily cook at home, I think that I would be just a bit more satisfied with more share-able portions because I enjoy sharing food family-style with friends when getting food from here and I assume others do as well. I definitely want to keep coming back here and trying new dishes, because it's yummy and a hidden gem in Utah. read more

Based off the reviews I had been wanting to try this place for awhile. Got numerous things all of which were just strange but I kept an open mind and tried everything. I won't be trying any other offerings as none of it was to my liking. The Goat Curry was full of bones and difficult to even eat for fear of breaking a tooth. There was so much sauce covered in the chicken wings that after sitting for 15 mins they were just soggy which was off putting. Mango rice was weird, it was a big scoop of dried out brown/red colored rice with random chunks of mango and I think condensed milk then ice cream came from grub hub was melted all the same textures globby. The ribs had no meat on them but had hair on them very off putting. The egg pancake thingy was ok but I wouldn't order or eat again. My overall take is that maybe it's better when ordered and ate there instead of take out. If you love this type of food maybe it's good idk I didn't care for it. read more

Wow!! Makanmakan has been on my list for years after a fellow Elite recommended it. I wish it hadn't taken me so long to visit, what a great restaurant! I started with the roti canai, which seemed like a straightforward choice - roti bread and curry sauce. But this was anything but straightforward! The dish was the highlight of my meal! The roti was surely made to order, it was so incredibly fresh. And the curry sauce had a nice coconut flavor to it which I loved. I might eat nuts a few orders if this the next time I visit! I also ordered the stir fried egg noodle with pork belly, which was delicious. The balance of hot and cool items in the bowl was fantastic, and I enjoyed the mix of textures. My husband ordered the braised beef in curry coconut milk, which was rich in flavor and umami. I will definitely explore the menu more the next time I visit, but these dishes were both excellent choices. As an example the sauce on the wings was pretty gummy/ketchup consistency and could have been thinned out a bit. But good flavor. Roti was spectacular, the curry sauce was pretty good too. Really really good and I think I'll need to go back and try a few more items from their rather large menu, in order to find the ones that I really love. We wanted something different, and different it is. It was a rainy evening so a stewed beef, an eggy noodle dish, and roti was the lineup and they didn't disappoint. I wish the braised/stewed beef had been just a bit more tender, but we ate everything with glee. Roti is never a bad choice, and the server helped us find our way through the menu and highlighted a lot of options. I think the way to do this would be to come with a really large group and do it up family style. There are dishes here that you just can't get anywhere else in SLC and so I sort of have the sense that I don't even know what I don't know yet. For a weeknight I wasn't surprised to see it not crowded, but I thought the interior was nice, and the food came out quickly.
