What a great experience!
We had a large birthday party of 14 people on a busy Saturday night. There were quite a few parties that were there waiting in the entrance and the hostess was very nice and let us sit at the table before the whole party showed up.
Due to the birthday boy (He's 55!) not being able to count correctly when the reservation was made, we had an additional 4 guests that showed up and of course the table was only set for 14 and we needed 18!
Within a few minutes the manager (who never lost her smile and checked on us multiple times during the evening...I'm sorry I didn't get your name!) politely asked another couple sitting near us if they would please allow her to move their table over a little (they did) so we could have another table added to our huge table to accommodate the 4 people standing there.
Our waiter Shane, was phenomenal.
He was professional, affable, funny and full of suggestions for those on the fence as to what to order. (Don't lose him...he could easily make tons of $$ working at any of the high end restaurants in Providence).
Other wait staff pitched in when needed (helping run food from the kitchen, watering the table, helping to clear glasses and dishes) and that's a sign of management that really cares...when you encourage your staff to work as a team and the priority is service and hot food, not just turning over tables, everyone benefits!
As a restaurant professional for the past 40 years, I was more than a little bit wary about having one server for a party of 18 people, but Shane was right on top of things throughout the whole meal.
We made it a little more difficult for him because out of the 18 people, at least half asked for separate checks. That was no problem for him! He thanked us for asking at the beginning rather than having to dissect the bill at the end of the meal.
He made sure that everyone had their drinks just the way they wanted them (a few were not, but they were fixed immediately...not his fault) and then he took everyone's appetizer and dinner orders.
A couple of people switched their seats after he took the order (which can really screw up a server on such a large party when it comes to making sure everyone gets the right dish without yelling "Who gets the onion soup?" to all 18 people!). It didn't faze him!
Even before everyone was seated, if we asked for a glass of water, it was there immediately and fresh Italian bread was on the table right away!
The salad bar was good (personally I am not really a communal salad bar fan, but it looked clean and had all the usual choices and a few other different items, so it was fine), and Shane timed the appetizer and dinner courses and cleared the table perfectly.
The food was hot...presented nicely...and all 18 people had their dinners within 7 to 10 minutes of each other which is so important! It sucks if your the last one served your entrée and more than half the table is done with their dinner(s) already.
Every dish looked delicious and everyone (as far as I know) thoroughly enjoyed their choices. Some asked for substitutions and they were easily accommodated.
I had the beef minestrone soup, which was hot and full of stock (just the way I like it), and for my entrée I had the Yankee Pot Roast with mashed potatoes and carrots. The meat was fork tender and I used the last of the bread to sop up the gravy!
By the time we were done with dinner, the rest of the patrons in and around the dining room had left and we pretty much had the room to ourselves, which lent itself to the group getting a little rowdy, bawdy and loud with coffee and after dinner drinks!
One of the busboys (Joe?) came by and we asked him to take some pictures of the party. No problem, as he climbed up into empty booths to get the best vantage point and to fit everyone in the photo!
Shane brought over some fellow staff members and (I think it was complimentary, but who cares if it wasn't?) a dessert with a lit candle and we all sang happy birthday!
Shane took very little time getting everyone's check(s) straightened out and processed and we all gave him a big round of applause as we put our coats on to leave. He took the time to shake hands and even gave a couple of hugs as we were leaving.
We had a lot of laughs with him and he is a true asset to your company.
We will be back.
